Every night at midnight Dax could start to feel the change. The curse that made him less human as the Phantom inside struggled to take over. Then he would hear the ghost riders--their pounding hoofbeats drawing ever nearer, reminding him that he was never safe. Nor were the ones he loved.

As a girl, Robyn had pledged herself to him. But that was a lifetime ago. Now she was a woman. Beautiful. Pure. Every time she was near--her soft skin, her delicate scent--the Phantom wanted to claim her, to bring her body to the greatest heights of pleasure. Then steal her soul. Dax couldn't allow that to happen. He was supposed to be protecting her. But deep down, he knew her love could save him. If the Phantom didn't get her first.

This book had a very gothic feel to it. There were a few bumps in the plot for me and there was a bit of excess buildup. The passion between the hero and heroine was very well done, and I will be looking for future titles by this author. A very different paranormal historical story.

He has an otherwordly creature that lives inside him he calls the "Phantom". He has returned to his homeland after all these years searching for what he lost.

She's been bartered away by her father, at the gaming table. But she's determined she won't go quietly. Her heart still belongs to the teenager she was betrothed to as a child.

I did not know what to expect from this book, so I started it with no expectations. The title is what drew me to this book. The beginning of the story held such promise and I was excited to read more! However, when I was about mid-way through the story, I had an idea of how it would end, and the story all of a sudden held no more surprises. So, I struggled with the last part of the book, which was, unfortunately, boring.

Awesome, intriguing story

I wasn't sure I would like this different kind of love story.... But alas could not put it down. It was an amazing story. Don't like to spoil the book by too much detail. This is one is a MUST READ!!!

Cursed as a young child, the hero has always known pain and torment in his life. Even as a young boy he knew his future is uncertain and that life, or what he can manage to grasp on to, would be hard. Then he meets her. Introduced as his betrothed, something to uplift his spirits and show him hope in an otherwise hopeless life, the hero fell instantly in love with her. Even when they were separated shortly after meeting, even when the hero is badly injured and loses his memories. Even when the curse takes hold of him, creating a demon soul smuggling creature within his body, the hero kept the hope alive in his heart. It's been over 16 years but he's finally got some of his memories back and it sees him return once again to the country of his birth. The heroine is the first and only thing on his mind and he immediately seeks her out even knowing how forbidden he feels even being near her. The compulsion is too much and the spark inside his otherwise cold heart too warm to deny. He expects her to be beautiful and full of life but he never expected her to meet him in her bedchamber and offer him the role of her pretend lover.

The heroine is desperate to prevent her marriage to a man whom her father has chosen for her. In an attempt to be free, she tries to stage a scene where she is caught with a lover. Too bad the man who shows up is far too tempting for his own good. She never expected to actually crave the actor she hired but she can't stop herself from touching him and from wanting to be touched in return. Their brief interlude is interrupted as midnight arrives and the hero becomes something of a master right before her eyes. An eerie and unsettling glow falls over him and the faceless riders who hunt him each and every night attack. The heroine barely escapes with her life and though she knows she should be terrified of this man, she can't bring herself to it. It's him who saves her from her attackers when she flees to her aunt’s house and away from the marriage she does not want. It's he who tends to her wounds and lights a burning fire in her body, a fire for the kisses and the touches he offered her before. Though he tries desperately to convince her he is evil and a dangerous man, he can't help but want her close as well. The battle rages within him to see her safe and sound, away from him and the curse that controls his life while at the same time craving her near him like a drowning man looking for a boat. She doesn't know he is the boy she met all those years ago and he fears what she will do when she finds out but it doesn't stop him from loving her quite passionately. As time goes on the hero’s phantom becomes more and more presence, the control he struggles for slipping away bit by bit. While the heroines need to find answers and find a way to save the man she loves.

Okay. I liked this book. I liked it a lot. My problem with it is that it became quite repetitive and if I'm being honest, a little bit dull as time went on. At first, I was head over heels in love with this man and his torment. In love with his devotion to a girl he met briefly 16 years ago but loves passionately still despite everything separating them. I loved his darkness and his struggle to live with what he calls the curse, trying to be the best man that he can under the circumstances. I loved his secrets and the fact that he could love the heroine as much as he did and still find the strength to deny himself for her sake. I loved all of this.... for the first 150 pages. Then I began to wonder at what point is something else going to happen. The heroine would get close. The hero was fight desperately to remain at that distance. He would succumb. Then he would distance himself once more and the cycle would begin again. The heroine was an okay character. A bit bland If I'm being honest. She was kind and she was fiercely independent but she made some questionable decisions - and I'm not talking about falling in love with a soul sucking demon. This book was gothic in tone and very angst ridden but I wasn't completely sold on it's both complex yet strangely slow-paced storyline. Moments of glory were quickly washed away but moments of quiet and - when is this story g

I loved this book! From the moment it started to the very end there were almost no pauses that I could get a good night sleep the story was just go go go.
Phantom has adventure, romance, monsters, magic and battles. There is nothing more I could have wanted from this story.
LOVED IT!

While this book got good reviews, this was a did not finish for me. I had a problem with the heroine's 'strong-willed' actions - it was more like stubborn bad decisions to me.

Poetically wonderful. A spin of an "other" that usually gets a bad rep. Beautifully romantic.

This was a DNF for me. I really tried to like it because of the paranormal elements, but in the end it just didn't click for me.
