The ultimate self-learning guide to sailboat racing
In this practical self-coaching guide for the serious racing buff, veteran sailing coach Jon Emmett explains how anyone can improve his or her sailing technique in manageable stages. By breaking down racing into 20 key topics, Emmett shows how aspiring yacht and dinghy racers can learn to measure their own strengths and weaknesses and improve key skills step by step. The book also includes practical tips and wisdom from Olympic champions including Paul Goodison and Joe Glanfield.
As a beer-can club racer, I found some value in this book. The tactics section clarified a lot of things for me. I also needed the exhortation to densely drill the things we're bad at, and I look forward to doing some of the boat-handling exercises.
Sadly the book is a mile wide and an inch deep and the density of concrete exercises drops off further in. Much of the advice is wise and seems broadly-applicable across life, but also either not very concrete or concrete at a level that maybe I'm not ready for yet.
