62 books19 followersMridula Garg is an Indian writer who writes in Hindi and English languages. She has published over 30 books in Hindi – novels, short story collections, plays and collections of essays – including several translated into English. She is a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award.
She published her debut novel, Uske Hisse Ki Dhoop, in 1975. She was arrested for obscenity after her novel Chittacobra was published in 1979, in a case that extended for two years but did not result in prison. Several of her works have feminist themes, and she told The Hindu in 2010, "My writing is not feminist. One of the metaphors of womanhood is guilt, be it in sexual matters, in working woman or non-working. My women felt no guilt ever. It ruffled feathers. We have the cerebral part and the womb, which encompasses and empowers you but at the same time also tightens you. My kind of feminism is that each woman can be different."
She has been a columnist, writing on environment, women issues, child servitude and literature. She wrote a fortnightly column, Parivar in Ravivar magazine from Kolkata for five years between 1985-1990 and another column Kataksh (Satire) in India Today (Hindi) for 7 years, between 2003 and 2010. Her novels and stories have been translated into a number of Indian and foreign languages like German, Czech, Japanese and English.
She was a research associate at the Center for South Asian Studies in the University of California-Berkeley, USA in April 1990. She has been invited to speak on Hindi literature and criticism, and discrimination against women, at universities and conferences in erstwhile Yugoslavia (1988), the USA (1990 and 1991), and was a delegate to Interlit-3, Germany(1993). She was invited to and Japan (2003), Italy (2011), Denmark and Russia (2012). She traveled widely and lectured and read from her works there.

1980 से 2014 तक के बदलते समय को शब्दों में उतारना, वह भी इतना उम्दा । वाह।
I could relate to some stories , some feelings and found the openness of some stories so forward & amusing. I really loved reading these stories. Brilliant.

सारी की सारी कहानियाँ अलग अलग समाय में लिखी गयी है। के सारी दिल को छू जाती है, के करीब से निकल जाती है। मैं लेखिका के कहानी लिखने के शैली से प्रभावित हूँ।

पहली दफ़ा मृदुला गर्ग को मैंने एक साक्षात्कार में देखा था।
सवाल पुछा गया: "आपने लिखना कब और कैसे शुरू किया ?" तो मृदुला बोलीं की उनहोंने कई वर्ष दिल्ली विश्विद्यालय में अध्यापन किया था मगर किसी गाँव देहात गयी तो पाया की अर्थशास्त्र में पढ़ाये-लिखाये जाने वाले सिद्धांत असल ज़िन्दगी में कितने कम कारगर है । "तो सोचा साहित्य ही लिखना है तो अच्छा साहित्य लिखूं। "
उनकी यह मुहफट्ट बात मुझे अच्छी लगी। आगे (मुझे ठीक से याद तो नहीं है मगर) सवाल पूछने वाले ने कहा "हिंदी की कई उपन्यास कहानियों को दुनियाभर में ख्याति मिली है — ", इससे पहले की साक्षात्कार मूल सवाल पर आता, मृदुला जी ने उनकी बात काट पुछा: "किन्हें? मेरे ज़ेहन में कोई ऐसे समकालीन हिंदी किताब नहीं है जिसे देश-विदेश में ख्याति मिली हो।" साक्षात्कर्ता हक्का बक्का रह गया।
इस वाक्य के बाद, मेरे मन में मृदुला गर्ग के लिए एक अच्छा भाव घर कर गया। इसलिए शायद उनका लेखन अच्छा न भी होता तो भी मैं वाह-वाही ही देता। पर ऐसा हुआ नहीं — क्योंकि कहानियाँ सच में अच्छी लगीं। खासकर "सितम के फनकार"।
हालांकि, भूमिका पढ़कर और ज़्यादातर कहानियों के सार से जो कुछ मुझे मृदुला गर्ग के चिंतन के बारे में मालूम पड़ा है, उस सब से मैं पूरी तरह इत्तफ़ाक़ नहीं रखता। 2014 की बाद — मोदी, कश्मीर, और किसान विरोध प्रदर्शन इसके तीन श्रेष्ठ उदाहरण हैं -- किस तरह प्रवासी भारतियों ने यहां की राजनीति को प्रभावित किया। इस किताब ने ऍन आर आईयों के भीतर अकेलेपन और हींन भावना का सटीक ब्यौरा दिया। मगर बाकी की दिलचस्प विशेषताएं (जैसे की जात-पात का चलन, आज़ादख़याली, मुस्लिमों के प्रति द्वेष, और अंधविश्वास) पर शायद इतना ज़ोर नहीं दिया।
एक ग़िला यह भी है की शायद केवल उच्चवर्गीय (या उच्च-मध्यवर्गीय) परिवासियों पर ही ध्यान दिया गया।
