Mr. Puig i Tàrrech drills down through layers of history, culture, and legends to find through intensive research what can best be described as a fair assessment of the life of Jesus. This book is written about Jesus, not as the divine, but as the man. This is not to say that the divine side of Jesus is ignored, for it is explored in sections on Jesus' miracles and His relationship with Father. Rather, Mr. Puig i Tàrrech gives lengthy treatment to the culture that Jesus grew up in. This gives clarity to the life of Jesus: how He lived, where He lived, how He communicated, and how people would have received Him.

This book is exceptionally balanced. I get the impression that Mr. Puig i Tàrrech is a believer that Jesus is God's Son, but he goes out of his way to write a "secular" biography - one that does not promote Jesus, but is historically accurate (as best as accurate can be applied here). The hallmark of this book is the amount of research that went into it. Drawing not only from Biblical and pseudo-Biblical works, Mr. Puig i Tàrrech dips extensively into Greek, Roman, and Jewish sources to reconstruct a thoroughly plausible portrayal of the life of Jesus on this earth. It is because of this research that an appearance of believability springs forth, allowing, and no blasphemous pun is intended here, Jesus to come to life.

Al principi me va decebre una mica, aquest llibre. Pensava que seria una anàlisi historiogràfica seriosíssima sobre tots els aspectes de Jesús i que seria bàsicament molt científic. Passa que no, clar: el Dr Puig és mossèn i en algunes coses es nota. També hi ha la pega que el llibre és molt llarg una mica innecessàriament (jo trobo que podria ser ben bé la meitat de curt). El Dr. xerra pels descosits i en alguns punts la lectura sembla que no avança per molt que l'estil sigui agradable.

Ara bé, el llibre també té parts molt bones. La primera secció, la del context històric, és fantàstica i realment me va servir per aprendre un munt de coses. Després ve una secció sobre el personatge de Jesús com a tal en què se'n va massa cap al dogma (per exemple, amb l'estat de vida de Jesús, si era cèlibe o no) sense plantejar-se altres opcions. Parla també de l'itinerari vital de Jesús, que no és interessantíssim, però no està pas malament.

Després ve la secció en què més es nota que al Dr. li agrada una mica massa escriure: el missatge. Són una sèrie de sermons que, tot i estar bé i ser agradable amb reflexions maques, es fan moooolt llargs. Serveixen per aprendre què va voler dir Jesús en alguna de les escenes dels Evangelis, però realment es podria reduir a la meitat com a mínim. Aquesta secció se'm va fer tan feixuga que vaig haver de descansar del llibre (per això vaig trigar tant a acabar-lo) i fins i tot em vaig plantejar no acabar-lo.

Per sort, però, vaig perseverar, perquè l'última secció torna a ser molt bona. El capítol sobre la Passió és realment una reconstrucció de les últimes hores del gran rabí i el Dr. fa una gran fenya de detectiu. Després ve un trosset curt sobre la resurrecció, que també està bé. I el llibre conclou amb una bonica reflexió sobre l'impacte d'"aquell a qui anomenen el Crist", com diria Flavi Josep.

Així doncs, tot i les meves queixes, recomano molt el llibre. És molt important, però, entendre'l pel que és: una guia meravellosa per entendre millor els evangelis i, sobretot, la vida i missatge de Jesús :)

one needs a twice read... long..Consistent and comprising yet focused. Definitely daring.

A teacher and scholar, Armand delivers a truly compared history study, with insights of anthropology and sociology. A down to earth frank view, analysing all kind of proofs on the Saviour's even physical existence, including here ,unexpectedly, the profane, heretic and non-believers (if not almost haters)'point of view or theories. He is up to the challenge of the difficult perceptions. And delivers facts and reasoning. And much common sense. definitely crosses over the strictly mainstream religious thesis and talks relaxed about 'forbidden' things like the apocryphal texts, Dead Sea scrolls (wow, that would have been a blasphemy a decade ago or so, especially coming from a man of the church as him) and other pagan sources. He steps outside the box and offers a wider more scientific view on the subject. In the end u can finally put your finger on smth outhere and say: yes, there is reason enough to believe. And knowing there are many more proofs from the esoteric side than the mainstream, it all makes sense in the end. On the life and death of Yeshua Ha-Nozri...
