Ghost Hunter P.I. #1

Ghostly Apparitions

Rate this book
Ghost hunter extraordinaire Meredith Good is not feeling all that great these days. She's broke and the only possession she has in the world is her crappy car that barely runs anymore. So she decides to move back to her Silver Bells Cove, Ohio. It's not ideal, but it'll do, for now anyway. She's glad to see her grandmother and she's more than happy to indulge in her grandmother's delicious pastries. When she runs into her ex, who happens to be a cop now, things get a bit more complicated. Oh, there's also a dead body by the lake and the ghost belonging to that body wants nothing more than for his murder to be solved. Things get interesting when Meredith finds out that the victim was working on projects around the small town, trying to modernize the quaint town with tourist-ready hotels and chain stores. A sexy PI, a greedy billionaire and some not-so-happy locals could all be prime suspects in the murder, and it's up to Meredith to get to the truth of the matter. With a little help from her best friend Rebecca (who just happens to be a ghost), Meredith is sure to get herself into all kinds of trouble. All she has to do is make sure she doesn't become a ghost herself in the process!

I've always been drawn to all things witchy and mysterious, so it's no surprise that my first book should be about a witch solving a murder! I'm the author of the Book & Candle cozy mystery series. The first three books, A Witch's Guide to Murder, A Witch's Guide to Werewolves, and A Witch's Guide to Hauntings, are available now!

Meredith grew up in Silver Bells Cove and was dating Jonathan until he proposed and she left. She was known as the town freak as she can see and talk to ghost. She is a medium. Having it rough in the big city her and her ghost friend Rebecca move back to Silver Bells Cove and move in with her grandmother. Gran has a bakery and she set up shop next door for Meredith to have her own shop.

What she doesn’t plan on is her cousin, Sarah dating Jonathan and trying to help solve a few murders along the way by the ghosts themselves. Not to mention a hunky PI that is in town as he worked for the main man that was murdered, Derek Powers. Zane and Meredith start to work together.

Can these two work on finding out what happened and will the town still think she is a freak?

I loved Meredith’s character she is spunky and doesn’t care what the other’s think of her. She just wants to help ghosts move on. Zane is starting to fall for Meredith and he is spunky as well and finally believes in her. It makes a big difference. A great story that kept me turning the pages to find out what happened.

Meredith Good is a ghost hunter PI who couldn't make it in the big city so had to move home to her grandmother and try to start over. Its seems murder has followed her as there are 2 with in days of her arriving home. Meredith's best friend Rebecca is in fact a ghost she has known most of her life but has never been able to solve her cause of death, so Rebecca just floats around pretty much as a lookout for Meredith. In an attempt to solve the 2 recent murders Meredith teams up with a real PI but between them they are not that great at solving the crimes.

It was okayish, but both characters and mystery felt a bit flat. Characters especially annoyed me. Also the cats must be getting very fat the way she kept feeding them.

Money problems have resulted in Meredith Good, 28, and her BFF Rebecca moving back to Silver Bells Cove, the small Ohio town she left, hoping never to return, a decade ago.
She's certainly an oddity, not only does she see ghosts she conducts conversations with them regardless of who is listening. And, as Rebecca is a ghost, that's pretty much all of the time.
Socially, she's a loner, a walking disaster area in terms of normal interaction, and, depending on plot development, probably not too far ahead of villagers with torches and pitchforks!
First impressions is that Meredith needs snark, lots of it, but is generally content to moan and groan.
Business is slow so solving a local murder might go a long way towards proving her credential. Luckily, just as she arrives in town, fate conveniently murders unpopular property developer Bart Samuel.
One fly in the ointment is that local policeman Jonathan, Meredith's ex (whose proposal contributed to her flight), is now dating her cousin, Sarah – in Meredith's eyes an unforgivable, though unexplainable unless you count “blood beats boys” as a clincher, breach of the family/friend code.
Audrey Harper needs to work a bit more on her spelling and her meanings:- “Mrs. V shook her head. “He was just a child. He has wizened up since then and he has no time for charlatans.” That means he has bad skin tone.
“I didn’t expect Bart to interlope” - it's a word, it may even be correct, but it's not a word most people are familiar with – 'intrude” maybe.
“I really should have put it [her cell] on silence.” Silent is a better word.
When someone vandalises a car: - “Jonah took out his cell.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling the police. This won’t go unanswered,” The crime, the phone call, or both?
The book is actually quite well written, just sloppy occasionally.
The ending is a something of a letdown, it lacks energy and basically relies on spontaneous confession when “I'm not saying a word until I have a lawyer” would have been a far better choice.
“Ghostly Apparitions” is good enough to keep me reading the series, but Meredith needs to toughen up, particularly if she comes across Madam Darke again.
3 Stars.

The first book in the "Ghost Hunter PI" mystery series, featuring Meredith Good, who is able to see and communicate with ghosts.

Unfortunately for Meredith, business isn't so good, and she's forced to move back home with her grandmother, who raised her. She's also excited to reconnect with her cousin Sarah, until she learns that Sarah is dating her ex, Jonathan. Meredith no longer has feelings for him, but she is dismayed by this new development. In addition, the entire town of Silver Bells Cove is in an uproar, because a large developer wants to build a mall and a hotel in their sleepy little village. When one of the employees of the developer is murdered, Meredith is able to contact his ghost. Bart was universally disliked in town, but he has no idea who bashed him in the back of the head. Meredith launches her own investigation, which causes her to run afoul of Jonathan and a new PI in town, Kane. She reluctantly joins forces with Kane, much to the chagrin of everyone else.

The story was lively and entertaining, if a tad choppy in places. There were some editing errors, but nothing so egregious as to throw me out of the narrative. Meredith is a fun and feisty character, and I adored Rebecca, the ghost who's been her bff since she was a little girl.

Overall, an enjoyable book, and I'm looking forward to more.

Ghost hunter/medium, Meredith Good, who's been able to see and communicate with ghosts her whole life, has recently moved back to her home town of Silver Bells, Ohio, after being on the road for the past ten years. No sooner has Meredith started setting up her office next to her grandma's bakery, when she learns there's been a murder, which never happens in picturesque Silver Bells. If she can talk with the murder victim's ghost and quickly solve this crime, that would be great for business. Of course this is easier said than done when Meredith's ex boyfriend is now a cop that doesn't believe in her abilities and there's already another PI involved in the investigation, as well.

This book was a lot of fun and a good mystery, too! I loved Meredith's best friend, Rebecca, and PI Kane Xavier was a great sidekick/partner for Meredith's first case back in Silver Bells.

Absolutely loved it. The mystery, excitement, suspense, intrigue, drama, emotions, humor and so much more. Not forgetting to mention her ghostly friend. You are either laughing, on the edge of your seat or something else. She sees ghosts and I can't say more as it will spoil it. I am getting the rest of the series under KU since I can't afford those prices for them. I just have to see what happens in the rest of the series. I love it when I read a book and it keeps my attention all the way through it.

I appreciate that there's a main character who's really abrasive and has a BIG personality. I'm related to someone very similar, actually! So, quite life-like. And the talking-to-ghosts thing was interesting. The love story seemed extremely far-fetched, and I'd have appreciated maybe a little self-growth in the PI instead of her finding a man, but maybe that's just how the story has to go to fit into the genre.

I was grateful to have this to read on my airplane trip. It helped the time pass more pleasantly.

Another great ghostly series!

I'm glad I found this series! It was very entertaining and
an enjoyable story line. Read it in a single sitting. Just
couldn't put it down. Loved the plot and the twist at the
end. Will definitely be keeping up with this series! I'm
now on to book #2 in the series. Recommended highly
for all ghost mystery lovers as well as anyone who
enjoys a good mystery.

Mildly interesting but nothing special

Just what it says in the summary. Meredith "talking" to herself is mildly entertaining because the people who can't see ghosts are obviously standing there very confused.

No real action that made me sit up/my breath catch/actually feel anything for these characters or this story, it was all kinda just, there, if that makes any sense.

Overall, not badly written really, it just didn't do it for me.

Meredith, Ghost Hunter P.I.

Meredith has always had a gift for seeing ghost. Well, if you could call it a gift, that is. But “what better way to catch a ghost than with the help of a ghost?” That’s where her “imaginary friend,” Rebecca comes in real handy.

I liked how Meredith conversed casually with the ghosts as she contends with her old town, an ex, and a new murder. Everyone is a suspect.

A fun, quirky murder mystery!

A fun cozy mystery

I enjoyed this new-to-me author and the first book in this series. Well done characters and fast paced mystery. It gets a little fuzzy about 4/5 of the way through, but recovered nicely. Thank you Ms Harper for the entertainment, I will be getting the next book very soon!

The dead don't always know

How many crimes might be solved if only the dead could talk? Perhaps fewer than we think. If the dead don't know the answers, then only good detective work week get the job done. Maybe with some help from the dead. Off-putting for me at the beginning, the story grew on me, finally capturing my imagination and increasing my desire to solve the case.

Fun

I enjoyed reading this book. It was a pretty quick read but it didn't make me think very hard. Characters needed more fleshing out. If you want a quick simple light read this is great for that. If you want a more complicated story maybe not. Though simple and light is what you need sometimes.

Ghostly Apparitions was an AWESOME READ!!!

This book was a non-stop read!!
Meredith has been seeing ghosts, since she was a child. Her childhood friend was a ghost! Since then, she has seen and helped quite a few of them pass over!
Coming back home, Meredith gets involved in a murder of a local, whose ghost follows her around, but isn't much help in solving the case.

A good mystery.

Meredith returns to her hometown. She must solve the murder of man whose ghost she sees and can talk to. Her best friend is also a ghost. Meredith has plenty of suspects, deals with a cop, who is her ex boyfriend and a P.I.who helps her. Meredith is funny and s good character. There are some editing problems, but not a lot. This is a good read.

A nice mystery with some interesting characters.
The only downside was that I found Meredith a bit too sharp in her dealings with everyone, even family, which put me off her.
Maybe she'll improve in future books.

All wrapped up

Meredith and her ghost friend Rebecca came through to save her hometown. I liked the combat to stop big business from changing the aura of small communities. I will be reading more of Aubrey Harper's stories. 😊

Two murders

Meredith isn't happy to be home again because she feels like she failed. She does love her Gram who raised her, and her cousin Sarah. Lots has changed in town and two murders give her a purpose.

Good

Story line was good and entertaining. I will say that Silver Bells Cove is not a "small" town. Actual small towns do not have that many stores and areas in them; more like a normal size city lol

Needs an editor!

It’s too bad this cute story wasn’t edited. I enjoyed the premise—there’s a lot of potential in the storyline. There were a couple of things that were left unresolved, or could have been cleared up better.

This was a fun, simple cozy. Rebecca as the best friend was a nice twist. The idea of a PI who works for ghosts exclusively was interesting, but no wonder the girl can't make a living! Typos and poor grammar occasionally pulled me from the story, but I still finished and enjoyed it.

This one wasn't for me. The writing was good and the story was interesting, so other people will probably enjoy it. I didn't really like any of the characters. I am, however, planning on continuing the series since I have it on my kindle. I'm hoping they will grow on me.

A ghost tale, a murder, and two gifted people make for a murder mystery like no other. Loved this book beginning to end.
