The awakening of their love was an awakening of spirit

Crystal Blackrock is a member of the Creek Nation, blessed with wisdom and talents passed down from her healer grandfather.

Dr. Grant Sands returned from a military deployment in Afghanistan to immerse himself in a healing career of his own. An avid artifact collector, his own interests and bloodline have been secondary--until now.

When a series of murders tainting the spirit of the tribal land throws Crystal and Grant together on a journey, they're not only meant to help solve the crimes, but the mysteries of a love that seems predestined.

"Inspiration comes from many corners and the trail of life often leads to curves and drop-offs never expected. But it yields the pebbles and roots of which great stories are made." --Author Rory Church

Kindred Spirits: the Healers is the first book I have read of Rory Church, and the story engaged me from the first chapter with the twist and turns of the plot ending with the conclusion I was not expecting. The Readers of Kindred Spirits: the Healers will follow the bubbling romance between Grant Sand and Crystal Blackrock entwine with who is trying to kill them. Readers of Kindred Spirits: The Healers will learn a lot about Creek and Cherokee Indian culture especially about healing and the sweat lodge. I recommend this book.

In order to fully appreciate Kindred Spirits: The Healers you will need to accept that there are mysteries in this world that have no explanation and people with abilities that are beyond the realm of most of us ordinary people. Rory Church shows nothing but the deepest respect for the mysterious ways of the Creek people in this book. The conflict between the old ways and modern world is a central theme in the book and helps us understand that conflict in how the relationship between the hero and the heroine plays out. Unfortunately, the mystery and romance take a backseat to it.

Crystal Blackrock and her grandfather, Will Blackrock, are searching for roots and herbs deep in the Apalachicola National Forest. Crystal has gifts that her grandfather is waiting patiently for her to embrace. She has a real clash of cultures and is trying to live in the modern world and still respect the Creek culture of her grandfather. They come upon a recently dead body and catch a glimpse of the get away vehicle. To say they are shocked is a understatement and they beat feet to an area that has cell reception so they can report the dead body, as the body has been left near an area sacred to the Creek is very distressing too.

They encounter Dr. Grant Sands and are leery at first, then they are fired upon and Grant, a armed war veteran, is able to shoot back and scare them off, but not before Will is shot. Grant has his own demons and is just trying to find his own way back to normal after his war experiences. He firmly believes in modern medicine, but is intrigued by Crystal and her grandfather. As he becomes more involved with Crystal he reveals more of what he went through in the war. He also appoints himself her protector when the baddies keep coming after her.

It's always a gamble reading a book with a First Nations protagonist; it always seems to be a 50/50 bet whether the book will be well-written and researched, treating First Nations history and culture with respect, or whether it will be horribly culturally appropriative and fetishizing. Thankfully, it very quickly became apparent that Kindred Spirits; The Healers is most definitely a case of the former. Rory Church says in an introduction that they have spent significant time with tribal elders doing research in order to write a Creek Nation medicine woman in training, and that research has paid off; while I am not First Nations myself, the respect that the author has for the culture and traditions of the people they are portraying is evident on every page.

In Crystal Blackrock, Rory Church has created a powerful, fascinating heroine; a medicine woman in training uncertain if she can follow in her respected grandfather's footsteps, seeking to find her place in the modern world and be a leader of her people. She believes that the culture clash between her beliefs and the 'modern medicine' approach of Dr. Grant Sands, into whose company she is thrown over the course of Kindred Spirits; The Healers, is inevitable. I liked Crystal immensely and found myself hoping that she and Grant could work out their inevitable differences and find a way forward together without compromising her values and beliefs; I won't spoil the story for you by telling you how it all works out, but let me just say that this is a romance and it isn't a let-down in the happy ending stakes!

NOTE:I won this book through Goodreads giveaway

The beginning and end of the novel kept me interested. Unfortunately I found the romance scenes to be too cliche (if that's even a thing...)-some of the lines and constant rhetorical questions had me cringing. The murder mystery and main character's lives being at risk was what encouraged me to finish the book.
Overall,It was a somewhat enjoyable read, with a sweet ending (which I love in books)
