The Shadow Dragon's Stream

Rate this book
What happens when history is forgotten?

Only the oldest of the Shadow dragons remember the existence of the Brights – their light-scaled cousins whom they believe they destroyed hundreds of years ago. When Morrowshuck meets and falls in love with a Bright who is nothing like her kin, his loyalties are tested as he discovers the dark and bloody past separating their clans.

The Brights haven’t forgotten and are growing their numbers to attack the Shadows – and Aletta refuses to be paired with a Bright she doesn’t love.
The Shadows have no choice but an unlikely alliance with the humans to defeat their common enemy. Morrowshuck knows that alliance will bring him to battle against Aletta’s kin.

Exploring the dangers of hatred in a morally grey fantasy setting, The Shadow Dragon’s Stream is recommended for adults and young adults alike.

All I can say is that it is a masterpiece, an amazing literature piece that is honestly so underrated and I wish it had more recognition. If you want an emotional ride with ups and downs then this book is for you!

Morrowshuck is an Impure dragon. An outcast in his own clan, with dark-red scales instead of dark-purple like a lot of "pure" dragons. One day, he finds a duo of humans looking for Bright dragons, who have been stealing their cattle for a while now. Upon learning that Bright dragons are still alive, trouble ensues in the Shadow clan.

I love how well thought out each character is. This whole book is basically a chain of events led by every character's own motivations. At no point in the story could I imagine things happening differently, because otherwise it just wouldn't work with everything that was previously set up.

But that doesn't mean the book is predictable. In fact, it has quite a few surprises in store. Some moments left me completely speechless because I couldn't believe the book would dare to do something like this. The momentum is there throughout the whole read and feels earned afterwards.

The book has some pacing issues though. There were some moments that dragged a bit too long or became redundant after a while (like Dylar constantly translating dialogues I've already read just before). Likewise, some parts felt a little rushed, especially near the end. But these are minor issues.

Overall, I really recommend this book. It managed to keep me on the edge of my seat, and it has a story that will remain stuck in your head for a while.

Morrowshuck and Aletta are two young dragons from conflicting clans, he being of a despised caste, and her about to be forced to take a mate out of her choosing.
Being a hunter, a rare position for one of his caste, he enjoys a freedom of movement that leads him to meet Aletta while she flees her clan.
In the meantime, a human town is set on the foot of war by repeated raids from rogues of Aletta's clan, and the sleeping conflict between the clans is re-ignited.
As the three factions prepare to tear each other, the forgotten past of hate and prejudice of the two clans starts to resurface.
I found myself engrossed in the story and characters. There are a few little clumsinesses now and then, but nothing enough to spoil the whole thing. The plot development as well as some unexpected twists more than make up for that. I couldn't put it down.
Not a light read however, for there is much tragedy to strike the main characters even if it ends on a somewhat positive note.
