Trusting Justice

Rate this book
It’s been twenty years since the Sion arrived on Earth, changing everything, and Sasha Morency has spent her life avoiding their notice as best she can. She’s grown up with a collapsed population, unstable climate, and the bare minimum of survival necessities, all while the conquerors thrive. When she’s caught up in an investigation of the theft of rare jewels at the Reliquary where she works, she becomes the focus of a cynical Sion who is charged with solving the crime.

Banished from his Sion clan and his squad in the police department for not following orders, Dram Opano is not surprised to be assigned a basic theft case at an obscure Earther museum. A young woman working there knows more than she’s telling, so Dram decides to stay close. Sasha has a talent for climbing walls, confronting authority, and digging for information, much to his surprise and delight.

Sasha and Dram expect to distrust each other, but as they pool their resources to discover exactly what happened, a bond of respect and passion develops between them. When Dram is kidnapped by the people behind the theft, Sasha has to call on all her skills to save him. It’s a question of survival, for both their lives and their love.

The Romance Review

Telling the story from the loser side colours the book a bit more grey. For Sasha, the world is bleak and depressing. After two decades of oppression and being treated as less than intelligent, she finally clawed her way into a good spot. Or at least as good as it gets with aliens as the conquerors on Earth. She is basically a janitor at an Earther museum. She has barely enough to eat and a place of her own. This is several steps up from her original life, stealing for food and running with a crowd that definitely crossed the line of legal, with or without aliens. When her place in life is threatened, she thinks there is nowhere to turn because it isn't as if the aliens, Sion, will take the word of an Earthling. To her surprise, the investigator Sion, Dram Opano, is a bit more receptive to humans than other Sion.

This cross lifeform love interest starts out slow and brimming with distrust. This is to be expected as the two races definitely have unresolved issues that lead to hatred. I liked how the author showed the lack of trust between the two. The tentative actions which led to a bit more understanding and friendship is nicely done. This story does ramp up quickly as Dram and Sasha narrow down the real thieves. The twists and turns that take Sasha to her past is bittersweet. Sometimes the past is best remembered with fond nostalgia than to revisit in person and be disappointed. Still, Sasha's past helps her with skills needed to assist Dram and ultimate prove her worth.

This story is smooth with its transitions between past and present. The characters are likeable with their flaws and strengths, specifically their loyalty. It would be nice to have a bit more world building and for Ms. Lore to turn this into a series. There is potential for a dynamic world between humans and Sion. This book is recommended to space opera readers who enjoy a dystopian setting.

Trusting Justice is a dystopian mystery. The Sions invaded Earth about 20 years ago, and the native humans have had a rough ride since then. Sasha keeps her head down and does the best she can, but her quiet life is about to come to an end when some jewellery disappears from the Reliquary where she works. A Sion with no Clan is there in his capacity as Liaison Officer, and these two quickly become enmeshed in the questions surrounding the jewellery.

The relationship between Dram and Sasha is slow building, but deeply satisfying because of that. There are many layers of intrigue with this story, which are only fully explained at the end.

I loved the differences between how the Sions live and how the humans do, but I would have preferred a bit more history about the Sions - Dram says they are humans who wandered. Why? How? Where? Why did they come back to Earth?

On the whole, this book is very well written, with no editing or grammatical errors that I noticed to disrupt the reading flow. It is a wonderful mystery, and plenty of spicy moments to keep the romantic happy. Definitely recommended by me.

First let me say that this is not a genre I would normaly ready, no I did not hate it, but still had a hard time reading it, but it was well writen characters were well developed and the story was interesting.
Things did change a lot since the Sion arrived on Earth, Sasha has spent her entire life avoiding their notice, but things are about the change. Now she is caught up in a investigation of a rare jewel that was stolen from the place she works.
And now she has become the focus of a Sion who is charged with solving the crime.
Dram is not at all surprised to be assigned to this basic case, and the young woman that works there seems to know more then she is letting on. So he decides to stick close to her, but as they work together and they pool their resources to find out what, a bond starts developing between then when Dram is kidnapped by those responsible for the theft. Will Sasha be able to save then for its a question of not only their survival but their love.

Trusting Justice by J.J. Lore brought the excitement of suspense and mystery in a world where humans have a shaky co-existance with an alien race that have taken over the world.

Although I felt that there wasn’t much backstory about the Sion and the historic events that led to the way the earth is in this story, it was still an interesting read. You won’t find info dumping , in fact there were times I wish there was more info!

I’d never thought I’d say that an alien would sound sexy, but they are humanoid after all. Dram exudes that quiet sexy that really is the best kind. Right off the bat, he definitely does not act like the Sion around him. He’s more (excuse the pun) down to earth. The Sions that we are introduced to in the beginning sets the tone for the story because of their clear dislike for the humans. It really is a different perspective; humans are not on top of the food chain anymore.

Sasha, to that effect, hides her appearance by wearing baggy clothes and sticks in the shadows. So when she is accused of jewel theft, she gains that unwanted attention. Dram becomes the one Sion she can eventually trust, because of the major attraction they both have to each other. I loved the feel of a forbidden romance and both of them thinking that it’s not a good idea.

The suspense is great, and the author throws your suspicions around a little bit. So it’s rife with nasty characters and tense situations.

Hope there will more stories from this world, because the Sions seem like an interesting race. Plenty of romance to be had with the perfect balance of drama and intrigue.
