I recommend the book. This is my first read by this author.
I opened the book and expected Aaron, a Houston police investigator/detective, would be a middle aged, sloppy, hard drinking, overweight guy--a man like Scarpetta's investigator. The author did an amazing thing--she wrote about Aaron's quick and lithe movements letting me know this man was young. Juliard was mentioned and I knew he was cultured. He used his talent to entertain patients in a children's hospital once a week, and I knew he had compassion. 'Again and again and again I say' the author described the many dimensions of this cop in action words scattered throughout the book. That is writing talent! When Aaron fell into a garbage container and was pulled out and dragged like he was Nicholas Cage in RAISING ARIZONA, I distinctly felt his clumsiness. I held back one star for my crusade against curse words that are just in the way. A little 'cussin' is all right, but characters cursing in their everyday conversations and thoughts makes me mad as hell. I want to thank Bookbub for giving me this book pro bono. Midway this present book, I purchased the first book in the series.
There have been a number of baby food scandals over the years (check Clean Label for some studies that list some of the toxins and heavy metals in various infant products). Susan C. Muller's Summer Storm bases her mystery on the murder of a CEO of a company whose products target those vulnerable children requiring special diets.
Noah and Connor investigate the original murder, but find themselves bereft of suspects as each person who may have wanted CEO Madlyn Gwinn dead--ends up dead in turn.
Powerful people attempt to avoid exposure and a hurricane threatens the city as Noah and Connor struggle to unravel this mystery. Connor, whose wife is expecting their first child, has a personal concern, and Noah, having set himself a deadline associated with his past, is fighting his own demons.
Another good addition to Susan C. Muller's series.
(Stories that bring to light sometimes overlooked news reports intrigue me. I was shocked at the content of some respected baby foods and infant formulas reviewed by Clean Label.)
Not perfect; there were several missing words in sentences that editing should have caught. However, the characters, the plot, etc. was terrific. Despite a few times I wanted Nick to listen to his own advice instead of repeating to himself, he's a great character. So is Connor, and their partnership is a highlight of the series. At one point, I was so concerned about the characters, I was literally praying for their safety. Fictional characters! Sometimes I couldn't put the book down; then there would be a slowing of the action so I could breath and do something else for a few minutes.
Although I said last time I read two in this series back to back that I should separate them, it's just too good. I have to go on the fourth and final book.
I got one free then paid for two others which is about the best thing I can say
Since I'm wretchedly cheap 😜
There were some things that were annoying in the first book (typos that made this grammar nazi's teeth grind and the hero's angst drags sometimes) but those improve by the third book. I told two people about the series and recommended they try them out. I'll be picking up the fourth Seasons book soon and have downloaded a non-series book she wrote and am looking forward to it.
A well written murder mystery. People who work with each other are being murdered. There are twists and turns as well as plenty of suspects. All of this is going on while Noah's partner is having a baby and Noah is still getting over losing his wife. The killer was a bit of a surprise. At times the story was heart wrenching and a few tears fell. I loved how Noah helped Kelly and the kids in the hospital. I'm very glad I read this story. It ended perfectly.
I hadn't read this series. I will now though! This story is about life, death ,and the things we all go through in between! The Author has a way of thinking that expresses despair and hope, death and birth that many never stop to contemplate. Solving murders ,living with the past and still putting one foot in front of another.
Well written police procedural thriller keeps you involved till the very end. More questions then answers present themselves to the law enforcement team as they try to resolve multiple murders/crimes and dedicatedly explore a growing list of suspects until all answers are found. 4 star recommended story.
A company selling specialize baby formula that is for sicker infants, a doctor working with this company to support it product that is not what it is advertised. Multiple people associated with the company murdered, but made to look like accidents or suicide. Noah and Conner are the detectives investigating this case. A good novel with some twists in finding the murderer.
It is always fun to read a book taking place in your old stomping grounds. Native to Houston, I had that added visual and emotional context to my enjoyment of this wonderfully authored book. The characters feel real to me. Such a pleasure to read a book free of bad syntax, grammar, and spelling.
If you can keep the names of the characters sorted out, this is a good read. The author has done a good job of twists and turns and brought it all together quite nicely.
That's what the story reminded me of! I was glued to my tablet trying to figure out who did it!! I was very happy to be surprised as that always adds to my enjoyment! As did the personal storries! Thank you!!😊
The actual storyline was interesting enough. I liked that there were a couple of other cases they worked on as well as the major case the story was about. However, there was too much thinking, too much self doubt, too much thinking about self doubt. That sort of stuff rattled on for pages, repeating the same self doubt and slowed the actual story down.
This is an awesome story. I loved it. I got all of the way through the book and couldn’t come up with who was the killer. That’s a rare occurrence for me. Needless to say, this story is full of suspense.
The story was interesting and well written. But the use of the f word and other swear words was unnecessary and spoiled an otherwise well written book. Will not be reading any more books by this author due to the bad language that was totally unnecessary.
Summer Storm by Susan C Miller had well formed characters even if you had not read the first two books in this series. It doesn't often happen but I did not know "who done it" till almost the end.
The author has written a very interesting and interesting story about a person’s actions to get justice for what was done to their family. A story that is sure to keep you entertained and guessing.
The police force had a very positive slant. And the story was very exciting with intriguing deaden as you read. I was surprised by the ending and a very poetic finish. Justice was served
Great series! Keeps one totally involved in the story. Very interesting characters and a delightful Yorkie, Sweet Pea. Highly recommend the series the author, and each book can be read on it's own.
Book started very slowly and did not hold my interest. Started with mild profanity but at 12% jumped to the F word. Got better things to do with my time than read that stuff! Deleted.
This book was a pleasure to read. The characters were so real and you could really identify with them. The plot kept you engrossed and I can't wait to read other books by this author!
A story that could have been pulled from the daily news. Suspenseful and mysterious, detectives that doggedly follow leads and hunches to put together to catch the villian.
Susan C. Muller is an excellent author who creates characters who portray believable people. Heroes, shady people and killers. Can’t wait to start book 4.
NOAH CLEARLY HAS A DEATH WISH, HE IS SUCH A SAD MAN, I REALLY DISLIKE HIM EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM IS JUST DEPRESSING. THE CRIME PART OF THE STORY WAS VERY INTERESTING BUT NOAH’S BACKSTORY SUCKED, HE TAKES TOO MANY CHANCES. A GOOD STORY LINE, I JUST HATED THE MAIN CHARACTER. ;O
Loved this book. The main character was a lovable cop. The author kept you guessing until the end who the killer really was. Can't wait to read more and see what happens to the main character.
Plot twists abound in this book. Just when you think you have it figured out another twist shows up. A great book to read but don't expect to get much sleep!
Overall a good read - not too much descriptive detail but enough to give the reader a clear view of people, places and time. The end was a sigh of relief for those harmed and those with the potential to be harmed.
