People are mirrors. If you smile, a smile will be reflected.

this volume!!💛 it's so far my favourite of all and that has various reasons; 1) the flashback of when yona, hak and su-woon were kids was so adorable!! 2) that jae-ha/hak bromance though he ships hak x yona almost as much as i do 3) zeno acting like a god of wisdom and giving advice is so cute 4) foreign girl swooning because of yona's squad 5) the feast and yona's outfit and last + most important: all those hak x yona moments i am dying for!!!

although this was THE perfect volume for me there is this one thing that still confuses and frustrates me. why is yona still keeping that hair pin with her?! why isn't she seeing how much hak is struggling and harrowed by her? why is she still thinking about her cousin when people ask her if she has ever fallen in love? Hak IS THE PERFECT MATCH for her but either yona is acting silly or obviously not ready to realize that. i still love the romance and i'll love it even more when this princess starts finally waking up from her "su-woon" trance.

Good volume!

I really really enjoyed the opening chapter and how it’s a good foreshadowing(?) or at least eye-opening to Su-won and the “power” he holds as being King right now. It was also interesting seeing why Hak is the person he is now, though I guess it’s a double-edged sword because this volume shows how Yona isn’t the only hurting because of Su-won’s actions.

My heart aches on behalf of Hak because there is a lot more to him and feel we see that, especially with the nightmare and brief conversation with Zeno. (Seriously, what is this man’s power because of the dragon’s blood?? That’s a lot he was able to pick up on without Hak actually voicing anything.)

I know the mangaka has mentioned before that she likes drawing scenes/panels of these characters on the road and doing mundane things (such as washing clothes) and have found I really enjoy it too. This specific volume highlighted those parts a little more then usual and deeply love it!

With that, I am enjoying how our horizons are spreading. Though I was surprised how different it was. I didn’t think I had any guesses when it came to other lands and how they were, but the ending was really good in giving insight into things outside of Yona’s home country. (She also looked AMAZING in that garb!!)

I’m guessing this is the volume where Yona begins to view Hak differently and was surprised I was not as excited as I thought I would be, though I don’t mean that in a bad way! Surprisingly, my favorite parts have been interactions with the dragons and Su-won. The lack of romance has not been a deal breaker for me nor it is what I’m most looking forward to. Just give me Sinha and Gija with the occasional Su-won in some way and I’m good! LOL!

Also anyone else take their time reading these volumes because of the art? I absolutely LOVE the art and caught myself looking at pages over and over because I simply couldn’t get over it. So good!

i am gone. this volume has ended me. damn. i was speechless, from the beginning, the trio when they were kids and their interactions and they were such an adventurous bunch even when they were little. i'm so glad we got to see more of hak and soo-won talking and i was really struck by how close they really were. they were both so smart at such a young age, aND SOO-WON LOOKED UP TO HAK????? my heart broke a thousand times. i'm really loving the fact that they've moved on to the kai empire, i'm very very interested in that. i loved how aro's situation was handled, and the drawing? it's always beautiful, but now, especially yona's dance, i was left with my mouth hanging open. yona's feelings towards soo-won are so wonderfully complicated and realistic.
and then the hakyona scenes...... damn. their relationship is so playful but emotional and really complex, and to be honest, i feel that jae-ha was right when he said that they seem so close but also so far away. WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO FOR THEM TO SIT DOWN AND TALK ABOUT IMPORTANT THINGS?
zeno and hak talked for like 2 seconds which i was very happy about. and jae-ha and hak's relationship is so amazing. hak called him big bro and i cried. this manga is flawless in general but this volume is definitely my favourite so far.

Not a lot happened to advance the plot in this volume, but it definitely delivered in the emotional department! The more I see flashbacks of Yona's childhood, the more I realize how much Su-won's betrayal impacted her. (And impacted Hak, too!)

I will very grudgingly admit that Su-won has grown more...interesting since the beginning of the series.
But "interesting" does not mean "likeable".😒

Another solid volume I ADORED!!! This story keeps getting better and better and more and more complex the farther and longer we go, and I love it. I really hope they keep going with the anime sometime in the future too as a lot of these scenes I would LOVE to see how they would handle and show them. Since I loved the whole thing, I’m just going to list some points on my favorite parts:

* Yona, Hak, and Su-Won as kids—these flashbacks are always the best, most heartbreaking pieces ever. 🥺
* Hak’s continued struggle with what Su-Won did—ouch. I just feel SO BAD for him as he took it so hard yet so different from Yona, poor guy.
* The conversation between Hak and Zeno about how none of them are replaceable—it was so sweet and heartfelt and shows just how far this group of misfits have come and just how much they CARE for each other... It’s just beautiful and I love it. 🥺😭😍
* Yona and Hak’s tangled feelings for each other—both frustrating and laughable and sweet from all angles. 😍😍😍 I just love these two so much, and I hope Yona realizes it soon too!
* Yona’s dance. The artwork was GORGEOUS for this part and especially I would love to see how this would look in the anime.
* Hak saying her dance was beautiful. 😍🥰
* That ending...!!!! 💔🥺

Content: some guys drink, a child is kidnapped and held briefly before being rescued, violence, Hak and Yona sleep together in the same tent (innocently), some suggestive remarks/mentions

I've thought it since volume one, but now I'm very nearly certain that Su-Won is in love with Hak. Who is in love with Yona, who was in love with Su-Won but is starting to really see Hak.

Ah, shoujo manga. What would I do without you?

Maravilloso. Es un tomo de transición, para el argumento general de la historia quizás no aporte mucho, pero sí aporta para la relación Yona-Hak y eso es todo lo que necesito para ser feliz💕.

Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...

This is a review of volumes 11-12 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.

Princess Yona is the pampered daughter of her kingdom's king. Isolated and doted on she has two childhood friends, Hak, a general who also protects her and her cousin, Soo-won who helped her mourn her mother's passing and who she is crushing on big time. On her 16th birthday her entire world implodes to to a crippling betrayal... She must decide if she will fall in line or rise up and take back her kingdom.

This is a short story arc that begins in Yona of the Dawn vol 11, builds up in vol 12, leaving us on a cliffhanger!! We leave the fire tribe lands for Kai, a neighboring kingdom that has some effect on their country's economy. We learn a little of their relation to one another and its quite fascinating. It not a terribly tense volume as far as plot goes but it really ups the tensions between Yona and Hak in the romance department and I was quite excited to see that happening. Yona has an opportunity to be stirred to something resembling jealousy without going their yet.

The fact romance was a big part of Yona of the Dawn vol 11 was a good direction to go for me. I love how Mizuho Kusanagi interjects a major theme to center the more humdrum but necessary kingdom building plot around. In the previous couple volumes its been Lord Tae-jun and his growth into a decent human being and here its Hak taking a step toward Yona and making her heart pound (for some mysterious reason, lol)! I do love that Yun had a goal also and how Yona played a huge part in that arc.

In Yona of the Dawn vol 12 the story gets more serious as we see Yona and company have stumbled on some serious business between the fire tribe and the country of Kai. We get a ton of Su-won here as he brings his plans for dealing with this rebellion into action. I really loved how Yona is starting to come into her own as a leader. She makes decisions and we really are seeing her female empowerment in action. We learn about Kang Kyo-ga and what kind of man he is compared to his brother (Lord Tae-jun). I enjoy these glimpses into the side characters. And he is used well as the central core to the rebellion part of the volume.

We get to see Yona, Su-won and Hak interactions in both volumes and I LOVED it. I adored the view of the past in vol 11 and felt like it really established why Hak was equally as cut up as Yona about Su-won. To follow this with the romance advancements are so smart because now we understand why Hak hesitates even now. It was so organic how the group worked together to brainstorm what was going on, so, so good... The bonus stories about Gija and Jaeha are super funny and I cried reading about Gija’s father!! This is why I love Yona of the Dawn... These are genuine people who have lived, loved, thought, been betrayed, and broken hearted.

The art for the past portion of vol 11 is so, so good! To miniaturize our main characters is just too, too cute. I fell in love with each and every page, lol. I wasn't a fan of Mizuho Kusanagi's art style at first (i.e. the first 2 volumes) but the more I read the more I love it and I think that has to do with the confidence with which it is drawn. The world is so sure. The characters are real and we are able to see their strengths and weaknesses come off the page through the art!

Yona of the Dawn vol 11-12 is a great new arc in the series. Once the dragons were gathered it was hard to imagine what would be happening next?! I enjoyed exploring the fire tribe but to get some serious plot at this point in the story was perfect! Yona, Hak and Su-won are pursuing what they feel is best for their country and people and its a glorious interlocking adventure.

The past arc in volume 11 really blew me away. I just loved it so much. I'm not sure you really understood how Hak felt about Su-won up to this point. You knew they were childhood friends and were in close contact with one another but not much else. We really needed to understand the dimensions to their relationship, especially since Hak decided to reach out to Yona as more than her most loyal servant.

And we learn there is so much between this self-made emperor and the man who is loyal to the one slain. Now we feel the tragedy in this situation. It's about more than a girl with a crush who really needs to get over it already.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

4.5 stars.

“I won’t wear it. I won’t wear that hairpin again […] The dance that looked as if it were a play. Which I practiced for your sake. Doesn’t suit me now. Now, the folding fan has turned into a sword.”

If there was ever a time when I was sad an anime was canceled, this is it. I wish I could see some of the scenes that happen in this volume animated. They would be absolutely breathtaking.

From beginning to end there are these moments that just jump from the page, they're so vividly drawn and so arresting that I had to stop everything and contemplate them for a good long while. And if they're mesmerizing on the page I can only imagine how that would multiply with the beauty that is animation.

Yona's dance is certainly not a moment I will soon forget. Alongside those very raw and complex emotions that Kusanagi captured through the pages of this volume.

“Your goal is too small. If you’re reaching for something, go for the heavens!”

While the drawing of this volume was absolutely captivating the story and plot did not fall behind one bit.

Seeing Yona and Hak's dynamic and relationship deepening and evolving has got to be one of my favorite things in this whole manga. Of course, they already have a very unique and close relationship but seeing it slowly start reaching its full potential, or crawl towards that end, is beyond satisfying.

Not only them but also getting deeper into what the others mean to each other is absolutely great. From figuring out a little bit of what Zeno means to the story, to understanding Jae-ha better, it's all wonderful.

“King Il is a pacifist that hates weapons. But darkness doesn’t disappear easily in places where people are gathered.”

Getting to explore again the complicated relationship between Hak, Yona, and Soo-won was really heartbreaking.

The more I get to know about the facets of their connection the more I am torn up about how to feel about any of this, which is great because I can put myself in the shoes of the characters very easily.

Seeing those flashbacks did not make anything less complicated and it certainly wrung my heart tight.

“’A sword dance at a fire festival is...’ ‘Is she picking up a fight?’ ‘No, instead of arousing a fighting spirit, this dance is as if it were a prayer and sorrow.”

Loved

I liked this more than the other volumes there is more on Yona, Hak and Su-won's relationship along with a great start on romance. I loved the characters so much I especially loved seeing more of how Hak feels towards Yona I just love their relationship in general. I loved the plot it focused mostly on Hak's feelings for Yona and how that plays out in the story there is also a flashback of just how close the three of them were it's just sad that all that is lost now looking forward to reading more soon.
