Excerpt: Cultivate, then, gentlemen, such a judicious measure of obtuseness as will enable you to meet the exigencies of practice with firmness and courage, without, at the same time, hardening the human heart by which we live.
3.5 stars. A collection of the Father of Modern Medicine's talks. This is one of those books where I want to say something like "It's not you...it's me". The style and vocabulary for his lectures were hard to follow- partly because he was from a different era. Some lectures were more interesting than others- but I found it interesting that even over a hundred and twenty years ago medical students and physicians were being counseled to be aware of the tendency to be overworked and burnout.
