In 1809, Major Justin St. John returns from the Napoleonic Wars a damaged man, both physically and mentally. In addition to his physically trauma he is plagued by nightmares. There is something he needs to remember-something important. On Justin's return to London he discovers his younger brother and heir has been killed in an accident a few days after he had compromised a young lady's reputation on a senseless bet. Justin believes his only Sensible course is to wed her. After meeting Arabella, he believes she loved Jeffrey and loves him still. Justin is a poor substitute for his younger brother in spite of his wealth and title. Can he hope one day she can love him? Arabella Kingsley has given up her dream of marriage. She doesn't believe the man of her dreams exists until she is rescued by Justin St. John in Hyde Park. When he offers her marriage to salvage her reputation, she, at first, refuses no matter how much she wishes to accept. Marrying for the wrong reasons would be disastrous. Then Arabella realizes a scandal will hurt her younger sisters' chances of a good match, so she agrees. A Spanish beauty, Marie Theresa Alvarado-Marquez, arrives in London. Justin met her when he was in Spain and thought he was in love. After her father denies his offer of marriage he realizes it is only an infatuation and quickly gone. She pursues him even after his marriage. She can't believe he would prefer an English nobody to her. Arabella feels Justin truly loves Marie Theresa and he only married her out of sense duty. Shortly after their wedding, Justin and Arabella begin to suspect the series of accidents which plagues them are not accidents. Someone is trying to kill one or both of them. Who would want to kill Justin or Arabella? Who are their enemies? Can they discover this killer before he succeeds with his murderous plan? Can their newly discovered love for each other survive under the strain of not knowing when or how the killer will strike next?
