Moyoko Anno (安野 モヨコ) is a Japanese manga artist and a fashion writer, with numerous books published in both categories. Her manga and books have attained considerable popularity among young women in Japan. Though she primarily writes manga of the josei demographic, her most popular series, Sugar Sugar Rune, (serialized in Nakayoshi) is targeted at primary school-aged girls. In a recent Oricon poll, she was voted the number eight most popular manga artist among females and thirteen in the general category. Her manga Happy Mania was made into a television series in 1998, followed by Hataraki Man in October 2007. Sakuran was made into a movie in 2006.
In the movie Japan Sinks, she has a cameo role alongside her husband; their characters were also married. The movie was directed by Shinji Higuchi, who, like her husband Hideaki Anno, is a co-founder of Gainax.

Anno won the 29th Kodansha Manga Award for children's manga in 2005 for Sugar Sugar Rune.

buddy (re)read with Pauline

While I enjoyed the series like I did the first time, I couldn't help but notice the big plot hole in this last volume spoiler:
- Technically everyone should descend from Glace because he was the first wizard with seven wives, so Chocola shouldn't be the only person able to free him unless the rule was for a direct descendant.
- why nobody explained why Cannelle decided to let Candy be Queen. Did she try to purify Glace and that's why she fell in love with him?
- WHY DID SHE BECAME HUMAN AGAIN?
- Chocola and Vanilla are both fine for teens who saw their moms being killed
- Chocola and Pierre should have had a real conversation about their parents and why he was kidnapped at a kid

anyway Chocola has daddy issues and she's literally that vine do i look like your daddy?

I'm still glad that I own the series because it has a special place in my heart, it's just hard to notice things when you read it when you're an adult.

J'ai grandi en suivant les aventures de Chocola et Vanilla en anime, et c'est donc tout naturellement que j'ai décidé de lire le manga qui leur est dédié.
J'ai trouvé l'histoire très bien construite. Tous les personnages sont attachants et très bien travaillé, bien plus que dans la version anime, et on en apprend enfin plus sur Duke et Bianca.
Le manga a reçu de nombreux prix d'écritures pour enfant mais je conseil cette collection aussi bien aux adolescents qu'aux adultes. Même si l'histoire est racontée avec une certaine légèreté, le manga traité aussi de problème que des enfants ne sauraient pas forcement comprendre telle que la mort, la trahison etc... J'ai même versé une petite larme (même plus) à la fin de ce tome.
La determination de Chocola nous donne pousse à poursuivre notre lecture jusqu'au bout pour savoir si elle réussi a atteindre son but premier : devenir reine, même si ce but parait dérisoire au fil des tomes.
Enfin j'apprécie énormément le trait de crayon de Moyoco Anno. Le design a un coté vintage qui peut convenir aux plus grands ainsi qu'une touche de glamour et de paillette pour enchanter le tout.

I used to watch Chocola and Vanilla adventure's when I was kid, so naturally I decided to read the manga.
The story and the characters' backgrounds are really well-constructed. The characters are friendly and endearing, more than in the anime, and we finally learn the past of Duke and Bianca.
The manga received awards in children categories but I advise this collection both to teenagers and adults. Even if there's a slight narration, the manga also relates some issues that children wouldn't be able to understand like death or betrayal etc.. I even shed a tear at the end of this volume.
Chocola determination's gives us the desire to finish our reading to know if she succeeded to become queen. Even if the goal appears derisory over time.
Finaly I really appreciate Moyoco Anno's drawing style. The design is vintage, but there's also a glamour and sparkles touch !

This series was one of the first mangas I ever read when I was a kid, so it holds a very important place in my heart. I was so happy to read them again as an adult ! There are a lot of plot holes and the story is a bit rushed and confusing at times, but Moyoco Anno's artstyle is so gorgeous I was mesmerized by the pages. In the end, even if it's not the best story ever written, I still love it dearly and it's so inspiring to read ✨⭐

Tra i sentimenti umani, la gelosia e il rancore sono le forme di energia più forti.

Sugar sugar rune è uno di quei manga che riscalda il cuore nella giornata più fredda che possa capitare.
Si tratta di un majokko che solo a guardarne le copertine dei volumi, i disegni pucciosi, l'ambientazione... ti fa venire voglia di stare sotto le coperte, bere una tazza di cioccolata calda, mangiare tanti dolci e chiudere fuori il mondo ♥ o almeno questa è la sensazione che ho avuto io mentre leggevo.
Da premettere che è una storia semplice e se l'avessi scoperta e letta con qualche anno in meno sulle spalle l'avrei sicuramente adorata. Ciò non toglie che mi sia piaciuta abbastanza, volevo qualcosa di leggero ma non frivolo nei contenuti e non sono rimasta delusa. Anzi dietro la sua apparente semplicità e leggerezza si cela un significato piuttosto profondo: in primis che a volte il confine tra il bene e il male non è poi così netto come sembra. Spesso ci si basa sulle prime impressioni e apparenze perchè si hanno dei forti pregiudizi o più comunemente si è ottusi e non si riesce ad andare OLTRE. Un esempio in tal senso è rappresentato dal personaggio di Pierre che inizialmente incarna il "cattivo" e i sentimenti più negativi dell'essere umano quando invece in realtà è lui stesso una vittima; ammetto infatti che, pur considerandolo figo, mi faceva parecchia antipatia come penso sia normale ad un primo impatto... normale per chi si ferma alle apparenze voglio dire. Credo sia una cosa troppo insita in noi per poterla cambiare, tranne forse per coloro che hanno una certa sensibilità e immedesimazione nel prossimo. Ma in generale penso che -purtroppo- giudicheremo sempre sulla base delle apparenze, facendoci influenzare dagli altri, perchè è più facile seguire la massa che andare controcorrente.
Ricollegandomi a questo discorso, altro fattore su cui riflettere è che il manga, più che concentrarsi sulla storia o la caratterizzazione dei personaggi (dopotutto è una serie breve, di soli 8 volumi) si sofferma proprio sull'essere umano e le sue infinite sfaccettature. Mi è piaciuta un sacco quest'idea dei cuori di colori diversi, ognuno dei quali rappresenta sentimenti positivi e negativi... Amore, amicizia, paura, rabbia, tristezza, felicità, gelosia, solitudine e chi più ne ha più ne metta! A volte prevalgono gli uni, a volte gli altri ma fanno ugualmente parte di noi.
Mentre per quanto riguarda i personaggi praticamente mi sono piaciuti tutti e, pur non essendo super approfonditi, si distinguono per le loro caratteristiche principali. In particolare mi sono rivista in Vanilla: fragile, indecisa, insicura e apparentemente debole cede all'invidia nei confronti della popolare, forte e scontrosa Chocola che poi si scopre tenera e buona. Due personalità differenti, all'opposto direi, ma che colpiscono per la loro diversità. Impossibile non immedesimarsi almeno un pò in una delle due o entrambe... le ho adorate: hanno un'amicizia vera, fatta di cose belle ma anche di litigi e difficoltà da superare insieme.
In definitiva per me non è un capolavoro che rimane impresso (il fattore età influenza sicuramente) ma è carinissimo, piacevole, dolce e trasmette messaggi e insegnamenti positivi. Quindi se avete voglia di tutto ciò... lasciatevi stregare da questa magica avventura :')

Je vais écrire cette review en français car elle me tient à coeur.

Que dire? C'est le dernier volume de cette magnifique saga. La relecture de Chocola & Vanilla m'a apporté un bonheur pur et limpide. Je me souviens de la petite moi de 11-12 ans qui courrait à la Médiathèque de la ville pour dévorer les tomes. Je suis ravie d'avoir pu remettre la main sur cette série de 8 tomes qui ont forgé ma jeunesse et aujourd'hui ma vie adulte.

Chocola & Vanilla, c'est des moments doudous, des dessins magnifiques mais aussi un long récit d'amitié. J'ai de la peine de me séparer de nouveaux de cette bande de copains. Mais je sais que s'ils me manquent de trop, je n'aurais qu'à tendre le bras pour pouvoir les revoir. Je suis assez émue de terminer cette relecture.


Par rapport au tome 8:
Je suis vraiment heureuse de cette fin. Vanilla méritait tellement de devenir la nouvelle reine. Nombreux sont les passages où j'ai dû retenir mes larmes de couler. Par exemple, les adieux de Rubis à Vanilla et la mort de Lovin restent pour moi, les éléments crève-coeur du manga. Lovin était un personnage solaire et tellement attachant, il nous manque et continuera à nous manquer encore longtemps. De plus, Cannelle et Glace finissent enfin par se retrouver. Tout est bien qui finit bien <3

Avrei preferito un volume in più..per soffermarsi meglio su tutto...ma è ugualmente fantastico!

I loved this series from beginning to end and felt that the story had a good ending. I especially loved how at the end of the volume they had a bit of an epilogue that tied back to the beginning of the series only instead of just Akira stargazing it's him and his son.

Non mi spiego come l'autrice abbia potuto produrre un finale così...poco risolutivo: aveva intavolato un sacco di spunti interessanti, eppure non ne ha sfruttato neanche uno. Certo, alcuni "colpi di scena" erano sensati (ad esempio, era quasi ovvio che nella battagliona finale si sarebbero ripresentati tutti i personaggi incontrati in questi otto volumi), tuttavia, alla fine, risultano privi di fondamento: perché Sylvia si è presentata in quel momento e chi l'ha avvertita? com'è che Alchimie di punto in bianco ha cambiato schieramento? e Ambre come mai si è mossa ora e non prima? ...tutte queste domande, come molte altre, non hanno una vera risposta. Semplicemente tutti sti tizi dovevano essere presenti e l'autrice ce li ha piazzati lì. Quasi a caso.

Ok, il finale con Vanilla che diventa regina e Chocola e Pierre che coronano la loro storia d'amore ci sta (era telefonato, ma ci sta), e mi ha fatto piacere.
MA che ne è stato di tutti i misteri rimasti non svelati?? Qualche esempio: perché Chocola e Pierre si conoscevano da pargoli? E come mai Pierre effettivamente era stato rapito dagli orchi? E se effettivamente è Chocola la figlia di Glace, com'è che Pierre gli somiglia così tanto?... Come ha fatto Cinnamon a...generare Chocola insieme a Glace se lui era imprigionato? Come e quando Cinnamon è tornata umana da che era un famiglio (visto che non si fa accenno al fatto che qualcuno le abbia avvicinato anche solo per sbaglio un blanc?...) ECC. ECC. ECC. ...Non si sa. Perché Moyoco Anno non lo rivela da nessuna parte.

Infine, dettaglio che non è un vero buco di trama, quanto uno spunto potenzialmente molto carino, ma che mi ha deluso un sacco che non sia stato sviluppato: Akira. Akira è forse il personaggio nella storia con maggiore potenziale, ma che alla fine della fiera ha avuto il minor senso di esistere. Francamente, mi aspettavo che lui, da umano, finisse per innamorarsi profondamente di Chocola, arrivando a produrre un cristallo rosso, e questo avrebbe indotto lei a riflettere a fondo riguardo il peso dei sentimenti e soprattutto della sua responsabilità nel generarli in altre persone.
Sì, tecnicamente questo lo impara durante l'addestramento con Ambre...ma non sarebbe stato più soddisfacente vederlo accadere con Akira? In questo modo ci sarebbe stato anche un momento molto commovente in cui Chocola avrebbe provato una sincera riconoscenza per un essere umano per averla amata, seguito dal momento triste quando Akira si sarebbe scordato di tutto. Inoltre, si sarebbe così dato maggiore lustro al dramma dell'amore impossibile fra esseri umani e streghe (che all'inizio era stato nominato ma di cui poi ci si è totalmente scordati).
La beffa è che non posso dire che l'autrice si sia effettivamente scordata di lui, perché lo piazza in una vignetta nel finale, tanto per dirci che è andato avanti con la sua vita, diventando adulto, sposandosi e avendo un figlio... bene. E quindi ?... A sto punto dovrebbe importarmene qualcosa?

Potrei, infine, fare un discorso altrettanto lungo riguardo Robin e come mai la sua dipartita non abbia avuto il giusto peso, ma non credo sia necessario. Mi basta dire che, come il resto, era una bella idea, potenzialmente validissima, ma che per come è stata, letteralmente, "buttata lì" dall'autrice, e finita per essere priva di vero spessore. Un vero peccato. E dire che, la butto lì, sarebbe potuto esserci un sottotesto più profondo, se solo ci si fosse degnati di farlo presente: Robin, il vero tutore di Chocola, colui che realmente si è preso cura di lei, che muore per salvarla ucciso dal padre biologico di lei, il quale però non ha praticamente nulla a che fare con la sua vita (di Chocola). [I guardiani della galassia vol. 2 style]. E invece nisba. ... ah! Dimenticavo. E la sua ""storia d'amore"" con Ambre?...Non pervenuta.

In definitiva, mi dispiace davvero tanto. Vorrei poter dire che è una storia nel complesso bella. Ma purtroppo non posso farlo. È stato bello leggerla. Mi ha appassionato: per questo ho dato voti alquanto alti ai volumi precedenti. Però il finale è davvero insoddisfacente e abbozzato, ed essendo la summa di tutta la storia, la penalizza inevitabilmente. Peccato, peccato davvero.
Se ho dato tre stelline invece di due, è giusto per mio gusto personale e perché i disegni, adorabili, hanno molto valore.

Finished the entire series and rating it 3.5🌟

(This review covers my thoughts on the series as a whole.)

I first came across this story via the anime series in high school and remember loving it so much. The adorable witches, the quirky magical world and magical items, the cute V sign and heart capturing, the fun friends and familiars, the competition, and the wonderful story ending. That was the Sugar Sugar Rune I loved! But the manga has only some, not all, of those elements, hence the lower rating.

The ending is totally different and the powers/magic a bit convenient at times. (Chocolat needs to hold Pierre's noir heart to save him. Against all the long-known rules that witches cannot touch noir, it is revealed that Chocolat suddenly CAN and on top of that, even Filtre. So convenient... and the dancing candy?! Something so frivolous actually led to Chcolat's victory in the coincidentally nearby Spring Exam?!)

The manga felt a bit juvenile (the series is already for a younger audience but somehow the writing made it look even MORE juvenile. "Pierre is not Galce's son... that means we're not siblings!! So we can be boyfriend girlfriend!!" and things like "I can see your underwear" while flying) 🥲

Some of the writing was also a bit misogynist at times, referring to boys as cool and girls as jealous/frivolous/attention seekers. Also making Robin some kind of creepy pervert (he hits on middle schoolers). These things are written lightly about and brushed off, but I guess it was just a product of its time. 🤧

The ending... I appreciate Vanilla being queen but what happened to Chocolat and Pierre ruling both the magical world and ogre world in unity? That was so beautiful to me as a kid lol

What I did love about the manga that was not in the anime is meeting Poivre and Libby, seeing teenage Chocolat and Vanilla, and the love line between Haux and Vanilla 😍 (even though that DID come to be in like, 1 page lol and even though they didn't explicitly end up together in the end 🥲)

Overall I still have this historic love for this series-- I will always love Chocolat, Vanilla, Haux and Saule -- but the anime is so much better than the manga!

A rushed ending, promising elements barely explored, and plenty of inconsistencies…

What a shame to conclude such a beautiful series this way. It really feels like “Quick! We have to wrap things up, never mind the rest.”

Chocola sacrifices herself, in a way, to fight her father. Unfortunately, the manga gives no real explanation for the villain’s motives, who appears out of nowhere, nor for his relationship with Cinnamon, Chocola’s mother. She barely appears at all, and the revelation that she was the black cat from the very beginning completely falls flat and is almost never mentioned again.

Many questions remain unanswered: why aren’t Pierre and Chocola siblings after all? What happens to the ogres? Why was Pierre chosen to be their prince? Why does he share childhood memories with Chocola? So many mysteries left unresolved.

This series once shone for its rich worldbuilding and surprisingly deep characters, yet nothing is truly developed here: the relationship between Houx and Vanilla, the true identity and power of Lovin, or even the fairies who saved Pierre and Chocola. Everything feels rushed or forgotten.

Several characters are introduced only to serve no real purpose, simply standing around in the final scenes.

And on a personal note, I don’t understand why Vanilla becomes queen. She absolutely doesn’t deserve it. She literally betrayed Chocola by siding with the ogres (an arc that was completely abandoned) and spent most of the final battle locked in a cage. Even the character herself wants to give the crown to Chocola, but Chocola refuses, preferring to be “the queen in Pierre’s heart.” What a disappointment.

Sure, it’s a manga aimed at young girls, but that doesn’t excuse such a rushed ending.

I really hope the new anime adaptation will offer a better and more coherent conclusion. I still adore this universe, so it truly pains me to give it such a low rating, but it’s only because I know it deserved so much better.

[Critique de la série entière]

J'avais découvert Chocola et Vanilla en regardant l'anime quand j'étais petite, mais je n'avais vu que les premiers épisodes. J'avais commencé à lire les mangas mais je m'étais arrêtée au tome 2. J'aurais certainement eu une compréhension très différente de l'œuvre à l'époque.

Chocola et Vanilla commence comme un shôjo pour ado avec des thématiques assez classiques, centrées autour de l'amour et de l'amitié, saupoudrées d'un peu de magie dans la lignée des magical girls. Mais très vite le drame et la guerre s'installent dans la vie des deux sorcières et leur impose de devenir adultes beaucoup trop tôt. Comment mesure-t-on l'amour ? Toutes les formes d'amour se valent-elles ? Comment naît l'amitié ? Doit-on tout accepter par amour ? Doit-on tout sacrifier par amour ? Comment guérir la jalousie et la rancoeur ? Comment adoucir les souffrances et la haine d'un peuple opprimé ? Voilà quelques questions aux réponses pas si évidentes, mais auxquelles les adultes de leur entourage leur demandent déjà de savoir répondre.

Chocola et Vanilla fait partie de ces œuvres à la fois fun et émouvantes, qui sont accessibles à tout âge. La série mériterait bien cependant de perdre son statut de manga "pour enfants".

Ma seule petite déception se trouve dans le rythme de l'histoire, avec certains passages allant vraiment trop vite, au détriment de la compréhension. Lui donner l'opportunité de s'étaler sur 12 tomes au lieu de 8 aurait certainement permis de raconter cette aventure à un rythme plus approprié. On se console en profitant des dessins magnifiques de Moyoco Anno.

Je m'y attendais tellement pas !! Puis les ogres attaquent en masse, et je me rends compte une énième fois, que quand un anime/manga cherche à trop complexifier un élément, il n'y arrive pas. Je suis perdue, je comprends plus, je ne me souviens plus de tel détail de tel tome.. Tant pis.. Je continue de lire et je verrais bien. En tout cas, tout ça prouve qu'on s'approche du dénouement et de la fin !!

Le 8e et dernier tome est ouf !! Je m'attendais à certaines révélations mais pour d'autres, certes "secondaires", j'étais sur le popotin !! Il y avait surtout des combats, des libérations, des pertes, c'est la guerre entre les ogres (sorciers des ténèbres) et le royaume donc tout s'enchaine ultra vite. En film, ça aurait fait un carton !

Tout est bien qui finit bien, la fin est parfaite, cette série va vraiment me manquer. J'ai quand même réussi à finir le 7 et lire tout le 8 en une seule journée ! C'est ainsi mon 11e livre lu du mois de septembre 😳🤯🥳 Plus de 2 000 pages, yaaayyy !!

This is my first time reading this series. I watched the anime so many times and I loved it. The plot is still more or less the same, but the manga series ventures more into the world-building of the magical world.The friendships built in the human world are more developed in the anime, and I appreciate both. I learned more about Chocolat's background and more of Vanilla's development. Even though the relationship between Woo and Vanilla came out of nowhere, but I'm happy for her. Pierre and Chocolat are so sweet. The atmosphere is much darker in the manga. I like Lt. Glacier but he did not appear as much in the manga, which is a disappointment. Robin's death is the saddest, wth. There are still a few questions still left unanswered, like who is Vanilla's father? How did Cinnamon and Glace fall in love? Too bad... I hope there's an epilogue for this. It is quite a fine series and I love the art style. 3.5 stars!

✨ Sono rimasta sbalordita dalla potenza del potere di Chocola e dal suo incontro con il padre. Sollevata nel vederla salvare i suoi amici — e soprattutto Pierre — ho vissuto un’altalena di emozioni.
💔 La morte di Robin per proteggerla mi ha spezzato il cuore, mentre la prontezza di Chocola a sacrificarsi per tutti mi ha commossa e resa un po’ triste, ma al tempo stesso piena di orgoglio. Il suo potere di purificazione riesce perfino a salvare il cuore del padre, portando finalmente pace.
La copertina del capitolo 43 è delicata, dettagliata e splendida, un vero gioiello. Per un momento ho temuto il peggio, ma il finale è riuscito a strappare un sorriso al mio cuore.
🌟 Un volume intenso, intrigante e sconvolgente, che si conclude con un finale meraviglioso che mi ha travolta. 💕 L’amore eterno tra Chocola e Pierre rimarrà scolpito nel mio cuore per sempre.
🔮 Tra sacrifici, amore eterno e poteri straordinari… questo volume mi ha lasciata senza fiato.

An adorable manga to end the year! This has been on my to-read for years, and only just days before the New Year, I finally decide to check it off my list lol. A very different kind of "magical girl" series, more focused on a world of witchcraft and magic, and enduring "tests" in the human world (very reminiscent of Mamotte! Lollipop and Ultra Maniac). I love the food and dessert motifs in the Magical World, and can only hope the anime keeps up the aesthetics as well. My only real criticism is that the paneling can be a bit confusing, even for someone's spent many a year reading various kinds of manga, and the pacing is a bit all over the place. But the vibes are very Halloween (in the cutest way), and the fluff is adorable, and the art is genuinely gorgeous in places. What's not to love?

This was nice shoujo series, Anno has been a bit of a hit or miss for me but Sugar Sugar Rune was good. The very end felt super rushed but otherwise the series kept a balanced pace. I liked the characters, the world, the magic and all that a lot.
Anno's art is surely unique, in this series I liked it throughout but in some of her manga it has weirded me a bit.
All in all, a fun manga!

Watched anime during childhood, it is nice to see the character and story development deeper as it goes in manga now. Manga and anime version has their pros and cons. Anime version focuses on witches' experiences in human world and turn point and neglecting the background development such as Chocolate's parent stories(which explain the filtre speciality that Chocolate has and her mother disappearance). For manga, stories between Vanilla and woo is all of the sudden and not nicely arranged. Also, development between Chocolate's parent remains unexplained. But as a piece from 2004, it was a good enough manga and anime to encounter with.
