Hidden Mortality

Rate this book
In Bath in 1850 a witch is murdered in a ritual granting longevity to four men. What they are not aware of is that she has bestowed the same power to another called Seth to avenge her death. Cara is a descendant of the witch and fills her days with food with her Irish-themed catering business. Her nights are another matter; they are full of erotic dreams of a mysterious lover, or nightmares with mutilated bodies. So this wasn't the best time for her Nana to tell her she is coming into her power. Of the original four immortals, Vincent is the only one left and to stop his own long life from fading he needs another witch to kill. Seth was meant to protect the witch's descendants from a distance, but with Cara he can't stay away. He has to make a choice to love Cara, or avenge the original death and possibly die himself. Cara has the fight of her life on when one man comes to kill her, and another to love her.

This is a riveting paranormal suspense with lots of intrigue that keeps the reader on the edge. A witch is killed during a ritual for immortality but she gives Seth immortality as well to bring her killers to justice. Cara, a descendant of the witch has erotic dreams of a mysterious lover and nightmares of brutal killings. Seth is supposed to protect the witch’s descendants but finds himself falling for Cara. He’ll have to make a choice to love Cara or avenge the original death and possibly die himself.

This steady paced plot keeps readers on their toes with lots of suspense and romance. The author describes the scenes and characters with vivid descriptions that bring the story to life and capture the imagination. The characters are strong, compelling, easily related to and ensure that the reader wants to know more and there is lots of spine tingling tension builds throughout the story as the danger to Cara increases and more bodies are found.

The attraction between Cara and Seth radiates from the pages and the sex scenes are hot, steamy and sizzling with passion. The romance is sweet but is fraught with problems like the secret Seth is keeping and some emotional issues they both have. The reader can’t help but get emotionally caught up in their stories. Seth grabs attention with his vulnerability over having to live so long and watch people die around and not succeeding with find the witch’s killer. Cara captures the heart with all the losses she must endure throughout the story which bring tears to the reader’s eyes. But Cara has a great support system in the charming friends she’s surrounded with that add depth and interest to the story.

While I thought that Cara’s denial of witchcraft was a little over the top, I really enjoyed this intriguing story with its captivating characters and refreshingly different immortality spin and the unique conclusion to the ritual murders.

As I read this superb Urban Fantasy – I kept saying to myself, “Why haven’t I heard of this book before?” I have no idea because it was fantastic!

The premise of the book: “A witch being hunted by a serial killer that has plagued her family for hundreds of years”

“Hidden Mortality” is so original, it breathes new life into the genre. As well as witches, ghosts and immortals- there is mystery and romance.

This is a must read for any urban fantasy, supernatural/paranormal fan.

A fantastic paranormal mystery

I only have praise for Maggie Mundy's Hidden Mortality. Exceptionally well written and a great plot, with wonderful supporting characters. Seth reminded me of "Heathclift", and Cara was believable as well. Loved Cara's friends. Great book.

Hidden Mortality by Maggie Mundy was a captivating and mesmerizing paranormal thriller. The book opens with young witch, Rosie, being murdered in a sadistic, ritualistic killing by a group of men in Bath in the year of 1849. They believe that her death will give them immortality. At her death, she appears to the man she loves, Seth. She gives him immortality to avenge her death and protect her descendants as she knows the madman who masterminded her death will not stop with her. He will have to continue killing to keep his immortal body. As the hundreds of years pass, her killer is still killing innocent women, and Seth is trying to determine who he is and kill him. Throughout the years, he has watched over Rosie’s descendants with an objective state of mind. However, that changes when he sees Cara. She awakens feelings that he has never had before. But, as danger creeps closer to Cara, will Seth be able keep his wits about him and keep her safe?

The suspense and pacing of the story kept me interested throughout the book. Maggie Mundy does a great job with giving the reader just enough romance and suspense to keep them enthralled throughout the entire book. The romance between Cara and Seth builds slowly even though I could feel the sexual chemistry between the two jumping off of the pages. The two were also very realistic characters even though one is immortal. Cara has had some romantic issues in the past that really affect her ability to trust men. Seth also brings a great deal of baggage to the relationship as he has lost two women he loved in the past, not to mention he is immortal. There is also a whole cast of secondary characters that bring great things to the book.

I thought the book was a fantastic paranormal romance/suspense. One of my favorite things about the book was Mundy’s descriptive writing. She engaged all the senses throughout the book. Cara is a chef, and I could smell and taste the food she prepared for her clients. In every scene she wrote, whether it was the horrible scene at the beginning of book with Rosie’s death or the scenes between Cara and her grandmother, I felt like I was there in every one of them. The only thing I wish had been different was that the end seemed to be a tad rushed, but it by no means ruined the book for me. For all of you who hate cliffhangers, there isn’t one. I thought there would be, but there wasn’t. If you like paranormal romance, suspense, with a bit of history thrown in, then you should give this one a try! I look forward to reading more from Maggie Mundy in the future.

Hidden Mortality begins with Seth losing Rosie the woman he cares about greatly. She was murdered, but she does something to have Seth avenge her death. So now decades later Seth gets that chance to finally do what he was meant to. After living such a long long life, he will be able to get vengeance, but that all changes when he finds Cara. Cara has had some bad things happen to her before in her past, and she's currently trying to make a living as a chef. Things go a little crazy when one of her friends gets murdered, and she ends up meeting Seth. They instantly have an attraction, and soon the form a beautiful relationship.

This book was really good! I thought it was slightly sad though in the beginning, and towards the end. I really loved both of the main characters as well. The only thing that bugged me about it was Cara, at times she was kind of annoying. Other than that this book was really good, and I loved the paranormal aspect of it as well!

Taking control of her life.

Maggie Munday has crafted a story about the heroine, Cara, on a woman’s journey to finding herself and the love of her life. Along the way she collects, as many do in life, an eclectic assortment of friends who help her through her various times of grief. Even with the stories Cara tells of witchcraft, dreams, and immortals, Cara's friends stay true as Cara struggles with her heritage of being a witch. A witch being hunted by a killer who has stalked her family for centuries.

The hero, Seth, has been tasked by Rosie, Cara’s ancestor, to protect her descendants and to advenge Rosie's death. Rosie has given Seth immortality until he has accomplished these tasks. Now Seth must protect Cara since the killer has returned, as he does every fifty years to renew his mortality. Seth finds he still has a heart because of Cara.

As events impact Cara, she decides to step up and take control of things to save her life, Seth’s life, and their growing love.
