Lillith: Beginning of the Lillith Chronicles

Rate this book
400 years earlier, humans landed on their world, started wars, and sent both native intelligent species into hiding.
But now, Lillith and Joedon need human help to keep their civilization intact. How will the dangerous humans react to their plea? And how will their own people survive the first contact? The novella LILLITH introduces an unusual alien pair, their dilemma, and Lillith's plan to save them all.

Book 1 of the Lillith Chronicles

Lillith, middle-aged wife, mother, and ordinary house-mare, is caught by the mind-meld summons of the newborn Supreme Don heir. "I'm too old," she wails to her husband as she wings her way frantically to the baby's side, accepting an unbreakable lifetime connection. Shortly after, she begins to develop extraordinary new talents not seen among her species in years.

Despite her fears, she breezes through his childhood, adolescence, and early adult traumas. When he refuses to accept his birthright at a time of danger for both their species, she seeks a way to push him out of his melancholy and into contacting the feared human colonists for help.

The world is Garador, earth-like in many ways. The year is 2014 after the first mind-meld. And the human colonists have established themselves as war-like beings.LILLITH covers the first forty-three years of the Lillith-Joedon mind-meld. The first three chapters of EMERGENCE, the continuation, are also included. The Lillith Chronicles series includes nine novels and three novellas.

Readers say:

"Garador is an interesting planet as it has three sentient species living on it...the Reeth, almost straight out of a fairy tale, looking like the Greek Pegasus...are the very special sentient population on Garador for their telepathy, their sturdy, unequivocal unity of thought that seems to ballance [sic] the minds of the other races to ensure peace and harmony."

"The main idea of the story is the relationships between members of these different species, the trials, the joys, the lives they live in close connection with one another... Some super powers thrown in for good measure."

I had a good time reading this fantasy and I enjoyed that the main narrator is a winged mare - who is also telepathic. In the beginning she is eighty years old, happily mated and grazing, when she is called upon to be bonded to a new royal baby who is of a race like humans. The tale jumps forward a few times through years of the prince growing up until suddenly he's a grown, moody young man, unwilling to get married, and certainly not to his cousin. Our heroine meanwhile has been so busy that it hasn't occurred to her that the races are facing an existential problem.

If I had read the other books in this series I might have given this prequel a higher rating; prequels are always tricky as some readers will know the full story and others won't. Mainly I felt a bit annoyed that the races we meet are concealing themselves from humans who have landed on the planet before the start of the book; yet we aren't really told about that, and the humans they observe don't do much beyond playing football (so why hide?) yet might be prevailed upon to help (why does anyone think so?). I also felt some action would have added pace to the story. Three chapters of the first book in the series are included.

Certainly this book has gained my interest to read the SF / F series and see what else the winged horses get up to. Horse lovers should definitely give it a try.

Long ago, on a distant world, humans came and settled. They were initially welcomed by the natives, who happened to be highly intelligent creatures who mentally bonded with another from a species similar in form to humans, though not quite the same. It was a mutually beneficial relationship that seems to have worked well for centuries. But humans being as they are, eventually things between the races began to sour. The natives came to realize a need to hide themselves from the humans living on the planet and managed to erase themselves from all human memories.

For centuries, the differing races lived on the planet, with the humans completely unaware of the existence of anyone other than themselves living there. It seemed to work well for the natives, however as time passed, the human culture evolved and changed. Also during that time the natives slowly began to die out, their populations stagnating and not being replaced by new births. If such a trend were to continue, what would happen to the natives who depend on their bonded partners? Can they survive such changes, and what can be done to reverse what is happening?

Is it time to once again give the humans a chance to show that they have changed? And have they truly changed or have they merely survived whatever is preventing the native population from having children and continuing on?

I found this to be a very interesting story in a completely original world created by the author. I had a difficult time putting this story book down at night as I really wanted to know what was going to happen next in this multigenerational tale. Ms. Buhler has done a fantastic job in creating a very unique world and populated it with a just as unique people.

The problems faced by those races are ones that make sense in the context of the story. After all, when one people cut themselves off from everyone else, eventually they will stagnate and stop moving forward. And when that happens, there will inevitably be a lot of problems that must be dealt with if they are to have any chance of survival.

I believe this book will appeal to readers of all ages. It may be geared more towards Young Adult readers, but the story is well enough written that anyone should be able to enjoy it. It was the first book in an existing series and I do plan on continuing on to read more of this series in the future. It has certainly caught my interest and I can’t help but want to know both what will happen next as well as whether or not the native species can find a way to solve their childbirth problems, as well as whether or not they can learn to live with and trust the humans living on their planet once again.

In Lillith the author has created for us the world of Gareeth. Humans have come to this world 400 years ago. They were not the first as two other sentient species preceded them. These two species are unique in that they can permanently join with each other via a mind-meld. The Don is the human like species and the reeth are the flying horse counterpart.

Lillith is the name of the main character. She is the reeth partner to Jaedon. We discover that the reeth are very long lived, as Lillith joins with Jaedon when he is an infant and she is 80 years of age. That is the start of the story. We travel with Lillith and Jaedon as he grows and she helps guide him. They establish their own living quarters away from the rest of the species as he feels alienated by his Royal family line and the Council.

This initial separation is pleasant for all, including twins for Lillith. We see the home life experience for this unique pairing. Eventually the comfortable living is spiraling downhill. Unfortunately before there is any resolution the story ends. This is the first book of the box set, so perhaps there is more to learn.

I loved the story of Lillith. The concept of animals communicating with humans (using telepathy) is something that warms the heart. The world comes to life as you delve into the story, her unique characters keeping you engaged in the story until the end. A thoroughly enjoyable journey. Carol Buhler is a very good artist.

I read the box set of 4 books. The first two books were a 4 or 5 *, but the last two books were a repeat of the first two from a different viewpoint, and as such were not worth reading. I understand there are more books in the series, but I have been unable to find them to read. I am not trying very hard because of the last two books.

This story in part is about bonds between different species that are able to work together on a planet other than Earth where 3 different sentient species live there including humans. I think Lillith is a great book and other books in the series will be great too. I am glad I got this copy of Carol's book to review. This book is available on Amazon
