Ryan Quinn #2

Ryan Quinn and the Lion's Claw

Rate this book
Ryan Quinn’s parents want him to forget all about his death-defying escape in Andakar, his role in the Emergency Rescue Committee, and the fact that they’ve been keeping secrets from him his whole life. But forgetting just isn’t an option for Ryan—not when there’s a traitor in the ERC who’s looking to ruin Ryan’s parents and expose the whole organization.

Unsure where to turn or who to trust, Ryan and his friends Danny and Kasey soon find themselves off on another adventure, across the world, to help two musicians whose words have started a revolution. But fighting against injustice has put their lives in serious danger, and now only Ryan can help, no matter the stakes.

This globe-trotting mission is more treacherous than Ryan could have ever imagined. And just when he feels like he’s cracked the final clue, Ryan stumbles across the biggest secret of all—and it’s about him.

Jason Bourne meets Alex Rider in the second installment of the Ryan Quinn series—a book that’s impossible to put down about a character who’s impossible not to root for.

McGee, Ron. Ryan Quinn and the Lion’s Claw (Ryan Quinn #2). Illustrations by Samnee, Chris. New York: 2017.

Characters: Ryan Quinn. Jacqueline Quinn. John Quinn. Danny Santiago. Kasey (Ryan’s friend), Tasha (Emergency Rescue Committee operative)

Setting: New York and Africa

Theme: Secret society, Family, Teamwork, Trust, Politics and Government

Golden Quote: “‘You’re the best thing that ever happened to Mom and me. You’re the love of our lives, and we’d do anything for you. You’re our son in every way possible.’” (Page 250).

Plot/Summary: An action-filled adventure book that entices readers to keep reading due to its suspense! Ryan and his best friend, Danny, are two stowaway teens who are caught en route to Africa, due to their curiosity and premonition of sensing that something is wrong and trying to help Ryan’s parents. In their attempt in trying to rescue two musicians that had their identities revealed to the African government, Ryan and Danny made it their mission to help solve this case. As operatives of the Emergency Rescue Committee, Ryan’s parents, Jacqueline and John, along with their co-operative member, Tasha, worked together to find the culprit that had exposed the secret identities of the musicians. While Ryan’s father is in Africa to rescue Ryan and Danny, Jacqueline, Ryan’s mom, has her work cut for her to figure out who the traitor is that revealed the secret identities of individuals that have been rescued.

Illustrations: Illustrator, Chris Samnee, made it a point to convey the “Ryan Quinn” series by depicting the serries name to take up the majority of the book cover. With two boys climbing the “Ryan Quinn” wall, the message conveys an adventure about to take place. The camouflage colors of the cover are appropriate to establish that an undercover adventure and suspense will take place. The book is divided up into three parts, where each has part has full-sized black and white large comic illustrations with anticipating images about the upcoming chapters. Depending on the setting of the chapters, a flag of either the United States or Africa shows where the events will take place, which definitely helps the readers to switch back and forth when reading, making and following the context and storyline more understandable.

Target Audience: Ages 10-15

Curriculum ties: World History: History of Africa, cultures, people, and government; Geography: Mapping skills and geography of Africa and USA; Government: Learning about the different government systems, compare and contrast various forms of government and politics.

Personal/Critical Response: An adventure novel that will keep the reader flipping pages. The suspense and details of the actions and events will keep the reader engaged in the story. The flags that depicted the setting for the chapters set the tone of where the events will take place, so helpful to me. Adventure books are not my go-to genre, but I surely enjoyed reading this book! A must-read book for anyone looking for adventures that keep you on your toes.

5th-8th grade fans of Alex Rider will be pleased to see a "new kid on the block" with this second, stand-alone, installment of the Ryan Quinn series. Teen Ryan discovers in book 1 that his parents are part of a super secret agency that rescues political dissidents, fighters for freedom and the like. Both books 1 and 2 have Ryan and his friends Danny and Kasey helping in rescues, even though Ryan's parents do not want them involved and neither Danny nor Kasey's families have a clue. Readers will love the fast pace and even the more reluctant reader might be enticed by this action-adventure series with its short chapters that get to the heart of the matter very quickly. I did find that author McGee left at least one unanswered question in the final chapters of resolution in the Lion's Claw--Something about John Quinn and his accidental role in a key situation that shall go unspecified???? But he does segue nicely into a bit of a plot reveal for book 3. I look forward to adding to my Ryan Quinn section at my fifth grade library, but may not purchase it for my fourth grade campus...gotta leave something new for them to discover and as it is, I'm not sure how many of my fifth graders will truly appreciate some of the political overtones present that make this a great read for the older thrill-seekers, too.

As described by Ridley Pearson, this book is so exciting, it just won't quit. The action and suspense the author, Ron McGee provides makes me immersed into the book as if I was a spy with a hacker friend. The plot twists inside make the story unlike anything I have read before. Although I usually avoid anything that wouldn't catch my eye on the cover, this book has shown me that I can enjoy different types of books as well.

I liked the cliffhanger more than the rest of the story. Pretty basic, people are getting kidnapped and Ryan, his friends and his parents are trying to find and rescue them. I'm intrigued to read the next one.

I received this book when I won a Goodreads giveaway. I liked it better than the first book! It was suspenseful and fun. I think my son will enjoy it in a few short years. I liked the cliffhanger at the end and am curious to see where the series goes next.

Great intro to the spy/thriller/adventure genre for middle school students. Definitely a page turner that will hook them from the first page. As the second book in the series, it does not disappoint. It does, however, leave quite the cliffhanger at the end!

Book 2 in the fast paced Ryan Quinn series. Still too many exclamation points, but a fun read.
I like all the different characters voices and how the chapters flip from character to character.

Ryan grew on me from book 1 to book 2, while still not in love with the characters, this was still a good read. Let's see how the next one is.

A fun sequel (although this was supposed to be a trilogy and a third book never came out) to read aloud with Josh. Action-packed and not super deep, but fun.
