Rate this book
Bride by Mail

Mail-order bride Judith Jones has barely arrived in Pepin, Wisconsin, before she’s whisked away to prepare for her wedding to Asa Brant. Though something about Asa seems so familiar, how do two strangers become husband and wife? Especially when Judith senses Asa’s hidden sorrow. His kindness in helping two young orphans could win her heart…if only he’d open up to her.

Determined to start over after four years of brutal war, Asa moved away and sent for a mail-order bride. He had no idea the woman answering his ad would be the sister of his former soldier in arms. The less he reveals, the fewer painful memories there are to confront. But Judith’s compassion—and two loving children—might just show them the path to true happiness…

Lyn grew up loving books. Her favorite night of the week was Friday night, when the Bookmobile came to her neighborhood in Illinois. She’d spend those two hours chatting with the driver of the Bookmobile and the librarian and making the big decision of the week — which books to check out! In those distant days, children were limited in how many books they could check out. Lyn could only take home six a week — and there were so many to choose from. Her favorites were Cotton in my Sack by Lois Lenski, The Little House series and the One of a Kind Family series. Later, she discovered Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances!
This love of books led to a desire to write. Lyn won prizes in high school and college for her poetry and, not surprisingly, Lyn became a history and English teacher. When she became a mother, she gave up teaching, and while raising a son and a daughter, she began working on her first novel. Then she wrote her second and third. Long years of rejection followed — as it does for most writers. Finally in 1997, Lyn got "the call." Her first book, Never Alone, was chosen to appear in the first year of the new Love Inspired line. Lyn has written many articles on writing and the emerging Christian Booksellers Assoc. (CBA) fiction market. In 2006, Lyn's book, Chloe, is a finalist for the RWA's RITA, the highest award in the romance genre in the inspirational category.
Now, Lyn spends her days writing books that show the power of divine as well as human love. Her nest is empty and she and her real life hero, her husband, have more and more time to spend together in their home on a lake in the lovely northwoods. And books are still dear to her heart.

Frontier Want Ad Bride was such a good book! It is part of a series, but can easily be read as a stand alone. For me, I was so happy to return to the small community of Pepin, Wisconsin where I could meet some new characters and catch up with ones from the previous books in the series.

Judith and Asa were great characters! Not only did they have to work to make a marriage successful when they didn’t even know each other, but Asa also battled deep regret and psychological trauma from the war. This created some incredible tension between Judith and Asa. On top of that, there were some other situations that arose and had to be handled by these two. I loved this story from start to finish and recommend the entire Wilderness Brides series to fans of historical fiction.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

There's something so scrumptiously delicious about a mail-order bride story. As archaic as that sounds (and you can be sure I'd run screaming to the hills before allowing myself to get roped into such an arrangement) I sure do enjoy reading about it! Especially when the tale is as exquisitely told as this one.

Asa has this marriage gig all figured out. His wife will provide companionship -- someone to fill the silence with conversation thus providing a distraction from the memories of war that creep up on him unawares. What he hasn't taken into account is that it takes two to converse and a sociable lady like Judith would naturally have all kinds of questions about things he'd rather keep hidden.

Asa is endearingly gruff and bumbling and so tight-lipped that Judith struggles to figure him out. Not an easy task -- especially when his actions seem to contradict his aloof silence. He is so consciously tender in his dealings with Judith that I swooned a little bit more every chapter. Their romance is rife with trepidation and that sense of unease makes their happily ever after all the sweeter when it finally comes.

This is the fourth book in the Wilderness Brides series -- and shame on me, I've missed two of them! As in all Love Inspired series books, Frontier Want Ad Bride reads wonderfully well as a standalone, though there are crossover characters that fans of the series will be happy to catch up with. And next up we'll have Judith's twin sister, Emma's story.

This fourth volume of Lyn Cote's Wilderness Brides series is wonderful! The town of Pepin, Wisconsin is an interesting place, and Judith and Asa were delightful characters. Mail order bride stories are always interesting, and this one is one of the best. They grow, not only in their relationship with each other, but as people as well. The plot line also deals with how war affects those who fight and then return home, caring for needy children, family relationships, and the joy of communities coming together and friends helping each other. It also shows the value of changing what you can about yourself first rather than focusing on changing the other person. I especially enjoyed the ending. The whole series is wonderful, but this can be read on its own.

I received a review copy from the author but these opinions are my own.

This was such a good book!! I couldn't put it down! I cried several times, just being so touched. Judith & Asa were wonderful and both trying so hard and I loved all the characters, really (except the "bad guy", who we aren't supposed to love anyway lol). I can't wait for Emma's story! I pray soon!

A story full of devotion, hope and showing love to others. Circumstances can cause life changes and how we deal with these changes can make a big difference to our life and the lives of those around us. Decisions are made in this story and the unknown outcome cause each character to have their own struggles. The author tells a heart warming story full of love and compassion. I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my personal honest opinion.

I do not have too much to say about this book. It is published by Love Inspired, so you know the plot before you even read it. I was in the mood for something light, sweet, and simple; this book was perfect for my mood. You have a good man who cares about his wife, but who also battles PTSD. You also have a good woman who is sweet and determined to make her marriage and family work. The little children were icing on the cake. I picked this up knowing it would not be ground-breaking; I just wanted something light and fluffy. If you are in a similar mood, I highly suggest this book.

MY THOUGHTS

Setting: Pepin, Wisconsin - This is book four of four in a series. Each book can be read as stand alones or in series. This is one of those books you keep reading until you're finished. Asa is haunted by memories of war and he's tired of being alone. So he sends for a mail order bride. I wonder how two people who haven't seen each other, don't know each other can be married and hopefully find love through an ad - a mail order ad. But when Judith answers the ad and meets Asa, they immediately marry and immediately trouble becomes their shadow. Judith also has a twin sister, Emma, who is also a mail order bride and both travel to Pipin together. Can Asa face the war memories that are haunting him? He must come to terms with those memories if there is a chance for Asa and Judith to learn to love each other. I was amazed at the way Judith dealt with Asa, being so understanding and patient. She was wanting that connection for love to take it's hold. I don't believe I would have that staying power or even the desire to be a mail order bride. But that was what happened in that time. Men and women answered those ads and wed. The book holds how the characters dealt with life as hard as it was. It showed how they had real life struggles and learned to overcome them. I admire the strength and perhaps, need the men and women had to go west and meet someone, a stranger, that was to be your partner for life. It wasn't back then, like it is now. Divorce just didn't happen. You were in it for the long haul. This one pulled at your heart strings and you could almost feel the pain and heart ache that the characters were going through. You may even need a tissue or two for that occasional tear you'll have running down your cheek. The author wrote a a heart warming story of love and devotion. The struggles of after war and what it did to the soldiers and those left behind made me take a second look at why the want ads were placed. Asa was trying to face the after war and Judith, in her way, had her own war at hand. A lovely historical romance. I'm just sorry I haven't read (yet) the first three books.

I received a copy of this book from the author, Lyn Cote and voluntarily decided to review it.

Since we will soon see the end of Harlequin’s Love Inspired Historical line, I have been reading them as the library acquires them. There is always a waitlist for them, so I don’t understand why Harlequin is pulling the plug on the line, but it is what it is. I happened to be browsing the catalog when Frontier Want Ad Bride was added, so I was the first to check it out.

I don’t know why I enjoy the mail order bride books so much. It would be extremely stressful to marry a guy you didn’t know, and to put your life and well being in his hands. Thank goodness it always works out for the Harlequin heroines, but I have serious doubts about it working as smoothly in real life. Most of the young brides have no other economic choice but to marry a stranger and hope for the best.

Judith has traveled to Wisconsin to marry Asa Brant. They have been writing letters to each other since the fall, and now that it’s spring and the boats can ply the rivers again, Judith and her sister Emma have made the journey to Pepin to marry their prospective husbands. They have been forced to this drastic measure because their brother’s nasty wife has run them out of the family home.

When they arrive at Pepin, Emma learns that her husband to be, Mason, had urgent business and had to leave town. Judith, meanwhile, is dismayed to learn that she is expected to marry Asa right now. She expected a short period to get to know him better, but the townsfolk have assembled at the school house, and before you know it, they are Mr. and Mrs. Asa Brant.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Asa is struggling with PTSD, and it’s keeping him from forming a relationship with his new bride. He is suffering from survivor’s guilt after half of his men died at Gettysburg. He thinks he isn’t worthy of love, and that he can never atone for the orders that caused the deaths of so many of his men.

Judith was a bit annoying when she wished she were prettier. Constantly. She thought that her looks were holding Asa back. When two abused children end up in their care, Judith has more than herself to worry about. When she set aside her insecurities and understood that the only person she had any control over was herself, I really liked her. She slowly began to understand that Asa’s emotional distance stemmed from the war, and she understood that patience might solve some of their issues. Instead of confronting him, she gave him the space he needed to put his guilt into perspective. Having the children around helped both of them see beyond their own needs. Uniting under a common cause, keeping the kids safe from their abuser, allowed them to grow closer as a couple.

Frontier Want Ad Bride kept me happily turning the pages of my Kindle. Judith matured into an emotionally supportive woman determined to make a new family for herself, while helping to bring comfort to her new husband, her father, and her equally unhappy brother. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Frontier Want Ad Bride by Lyn Cote
I loved this book! Judith becomes a mail order bride. Upon arriving in Peptin, Wisconsin, she’s immediately sent to get ready for her marriage to this man, Asa Brant. She doesn’t know he recognizes her, she’s the sister of his old buddy from the war. He wants to forget everything about the war, he got rid of his first name, and moved as far as he could in order to have a life without the interference of people wanting to talk about the war. Especially his wife. She is so kind to two children who make their way to the farm, they steal food and hide in the woods, they’ve run away from a home they were placed in when their parents died. Judith spends so much of her time trying to get to know her husband, wishing to learn more about him and to get closer to him. He keeps holding her at arm’s reach. He hasn’t consummated their marriage two months later. She comes to know him as a very nice man after time, and eventually she remembers where she’s seen him before! You’ll have to pick up the book if you want to know more. It’s a very engrossing read, I read it in one day. This book goes a little deeper than many of these types of stories do I really liked it!
I received this book in kindle format in exchange for an honest review!

This book is part of the “Wilderness Brides” series. Judith Jones and her sister Emma arrive in Pepin, Wisconsin in March of 1873 as mail order brides. Although they have corresponded for several months, Judith actually meets her bridegroom, Asa Brant, for the first time when she gets off the stagecoach. Asa didn’t realize who his bride really is, and she doesn’t recognize him, even though he looks kind of familiar. They are married immediately and head to his farm. Asa is unable to forget his four years in the Civil War, which doesn’t allow him to be open with Judith about his thoughts and feelings. This in turn doesn’t allow Judith to express her feelings to Asa. The appearance of two runaway orphans, Colton and Lily Farrier, changes all their lives. Asa’s growing feelings for the children help him slowly overcome his war memories. Asa and Judith want to keep Colton and Lily as part of their family. They also gradually come to love each other, but it takes a long time and a lot of patience on Judith’s part. This is a wonderful story that reminded me how love can overcome many obstacles. It is also a clean western, which I appreciate. I received an advanced review copy from the author for my honest opinion, which I have given.

Frontier Want Ad Bride ( Wilderness Bride - #4 )
By: Lyn Cote
Frontier Want Ad Bride is book four in Wilderness Bride Series. This book is part of a series , but Frontier Want Ad Bride can be read as a stand-a-lone without in problems. I really loved this mail order bride story. Lyn Cote drew me in right at the start and I was hooked. When I started reading I did not want to put it down. I got to meet up with some new characters in Pepin ,Wisconsin. Judith and Emma are twins and arriving in Pepin, and both are mail order brides. Judith gets swept away to prepare for her wedding to Asa Brant. Asa has served in the war and after four years has decided to take him a wife and start over. There are also two orphan children in this story that brought tears to my eyes and touched my heart. These mail order brides are very brave to travel to the west and marry someone they don't know. This is a wonderful mail order bride story and I really enjoyed it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book , but was not told that I had to give a positive rev view.

There is a little mystery, drama, romance and humor all thrown into this story! I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Lyn Cote. The story takes place right after the Civil War ends. Healing on all fronts. From those that served and those that were left at home waiting for their love ones to return home safely. Judith and her sister Emma make a decision to head to Wisconsin to become mail order brides. Judith is met by Asa. Emma by a letter, telling her that her betrothed has been called away to care for a sick father. Asa is a man that served during the war, how he served remains a mystery for Judith, but a little at a time is reveled about his past as the story goes. Two children appear (orphans)? Colton and Lily. An instant family for the newlyweds. How long can Judith endure the unknowns of her husband and the children she is growing to love? There are three other books in this series, but this book can be read as a stand alone. Wonderful read!

Love mail order brides

Two sisters travel to Pepin Wisconsin to get married, Judith and Asa marry on the day the sister's arrive. Emma's fiance had to go take care of family business but promised once that was over he would return. Judith was happy to have her own home to take care of, she hoped her husband would learn to love her even though she was not the prettiest sister. Asa felt because of his time in the war he had no love to give. He would give her his protection and he would provide for her. God looks at the heart, we may feel that we are not beautiful on the outside, it's what on the inside that matters. Asa was dealing with what we would call today PTSD but with God's help and opening up to Judith he learned to deal with his problem. This story has a lot of little twist and turns. Two little orphans, an abusive man, the threat of a flood, destroying of property, and the love of community, family and most of all God. Waiting patiently for Emma's story.

Frontier Want Ad Bride is Wilderness Brides #4 book in the series, by Lyn Cote. Story takes place in 1873. Judith Jones and her twin sister Emma, go to Pepin, Wisconsin as mail order brides. The day they arrived Judith marries Asa Brant. Asa is dealing with being a captain in the war and many of his men being killed. Judith is patient with his problem. A 8 year old girl and a 10 year old boy parents die and a neighbor take them in but they beat the children. One night they run away and hide in a cave near Asa's place. They steal pie off the window. Judith sets a trap to see who is taking the food. Judith hides and waits for the person to come again. The boy comes and takes a cake and Judith follows them. It takes the girl getting sick for the boy to come to Asa and Judith to ask for help. The children stay with them. The bad neighbors want them back. Asa does come around and tells Judith about his war past. A very good Historical romance.

It has been 10 years since Gettysburg and Asa is tired of living alone. When Judith arrives to be his mail order bride, he recognizes Judith and hopes that she doesn’t recognize him. Judith believes that she is not that attractive to men and is very patient with Asa when he doesn’t share much information about himself. This is the story of the slow growth of their relationship, Asa’s healing, and the making of a family with their care of two orphan children. This is the first book that I have read in this series and it can be read as a standalone. I enjoy this book very much and I found Asa's slow healing realistic. I also liked that the book was told from both Asa and Judith’s point of view.

This is the best romance story I've read in a while! It was a heartwarming book, with a sweet couple and family in it that just captured my heart. I really hated for the book to end! Judith leaves home to answer a mail-order bride ad. Her intended beau is Asa Brant who has a local farm. She's shocked to find out he plans to marry her the day she arrives! A scary notion, for sure, but Judith doesn't have any other options, so she goes along with it, when townspeople give good references for the man. She wonders what she has gotten herself into when he is very reserved and doesn't speak to her much.
It is the start of a beautiful love story that grows to include two orphan children. I enjoyed the book very much and highly recommend it.

What happens when you can't put a book down - you read to the end. Asa is tired of being alone; tired of being haunted by the events of the Civil War. Judith finds that when her brother returns from the War that not only does he bring his memories, he brings a bride and she and her twin are no longer valued or wanted in their home. Upon arriving as a mail order bride Judith and Asa are married within what seems like moments. From then on their life takes on one tragic event after another filled with discovery (two orphaned children) and self discovery (Asa's coming to terms with his action in the war). It is the self-discovery that sets Asa free to love and Judith's patience is phenomenal.

The Civil War was over but its lasting effects were imprinted on Asa Brant's soul. Trying to start fresh, he advertised for a bride. Judith Jones answers his ad and finds herself married the day she arrives. Judith is everything Asa could want but believes he does not deserve; still he will do riget by her. just as they are beginning to know each other, they find two orphans who need help. Asa finds himself with a ready made family, but can he handle the situation or will the memories of war interfer?

I thoroughly enjoyed this heartwarming story! From the frontier setting to the pioneering way of life, it brought to mind the Little House tales I have always loved. The historical details and characterization are strong, and the plot engaged me from beginning to end. Frontier Want Ad Bride is a great story that leaves me eager to continue the Wilderness Brides series!

I loved this book. Very well written. Taking place just after the Civil War, Asa is suffering from survivor guilt and having been in charge when so many of his men were killed. Judith has been forced from her home by her sister-in-law. They marry as soon as Judith arrives in Pepin, Wisconsin. She wasn't prepared for that. The story tells about them, how their marriage works out, and many of the citizens of Pepin. Can be read alone. Highly recommend.

I received this book in a giveaway and thoroughly enjoyed it. Judith Jones moves from Illinois to Pepin, Wisconsin as a mail-order bride. There she faces many difficulties as she deals with a husband who was emotionally wounded by the war and two orphan children, who had lost both their dad and mom. Through it all she shows great wisdom, compassion, strength, and a strong faith. Thank you, Lyn Cote, for sharing your delightful book with me.

Frontier Want Ad Bride #4 Wilderness Brides by Lyn Cote

I was caught up in the drama of mail-order-bride Judith Jones and her new husband, Asa Brant. They both are so very different and had to learn to adjust to being newly married and actually get to know each other. The characters face real-life challenges; including the effects of war on those who were in battle and return home, children needing care, relationships in families and the community. A great story full of hope, faith, compassion, love and devotion to others...even strangers. I especially like the ending.
