The Norns, Norse goddesses of fate, know you better than you know yourself. The young girl, Signy, is unaware of the life thread the Norns spin and weave for her, but she is about to find out.
It is the year 829 CE, Signy has lived a secluded life in a tiny hamlet on one of the isles in Southern Denmark and knows the outside world only from stories. Events take her to the bustling market town Birka, a vastly different place, and to a new life in the household of the town völva, a Norse shamanic healer and witch.
A story of fortitude, friends and foes, völva magic, survival and betrayal set in Viking Scandinavia. Signy Kráka is historical fiction with a twist of Norse mysticism and will also appeal to fantasy fans. Written with attention to historical detail and sweeping imagination, this atmospheric story transports the reader into the culture and beliefs of Viking-Age Scandinavia.
Praise from readers: "Great storytelling!" "Very vivid and realistic." "Wonderful. I loved every chapter." "Your story is one of my favorites." "I can't wait to see what happens next!!"
Signy Kráka is a novel told in three parts. This book is part one and contains 30 chapters.
I honestly would not have read this past the first few chapters if I didn't need it for a group challenge I'm doing right now. The description is up-front about it being 'the first part of a book' but I just want to re-iterate that there is no over-arching plot in this at all. It's literally like reading the first third of a book and not even an interesting one at that. The only thing that happens is that this girl gets kidnapped from her home and sold as a slave and she is SO DUMB about it because she doesn't seem to realize what is happening about 95% of the time. I guess she is very sheltered but it all seems very straightforward to me as a reader so I was just internally yelling at her the whole time. Also it seems like a potential love triangle is being set up in the last few chapters so I'm sure that will be greaaat. I'm sure it gets more into the magic and mythology aspect in the next two 'volumes', but there is just absolutely nothing going on here and Signy is so annoying to me that I don't have any desire to continue the 'series' at all.
This book was interesting, and not just because the lead character and I share the same name 😁. The best parts of the story for me were the descriptions of Viking-era Scandinavia. While the situations Signy found herself in at times felt a little predictable, the story did still move along. Overall a 3.5 verging on a 4, since I was hoping for more in-depth Viking lore and clashes, but otherwise a good book to tackle over a weekend.
So far it's a trilogy, 4th book coming! 800's historical fiction of viking life. Great read, these books are a fast read. Looking forward to learning more of the adventures of Signey, young girl kidnapped and given to a healer in trade for the healers murdered son.... what will become of her?
I feel like every book should be a complete story. I was left waiting for the story to start at the end of part one. I liked the short chapters, and the writing was good.
