Strange things happen in the woods—vanishing figures along backcountry paths, eerie noises half-heard near urban pathways, pungent and undefined smells blanketing forest trails. Science falls short of explaining these phenomena…
Haunted Hikes tells the stories behind 100 spooky and sinister areas across the country—from the Ghost House Trail in Big Ridge State Park, Tennessee, where photographs of the cemetery yield silhouettes of families laid to rest there, to the Transept Trail at Grand Canyon National Park, where a wailing woman in a white dress with blue flowers is often seen pacing the rim.
This book pinpoints the trails and reveals their unnerving histories. Within these pages are also basic hike specifications like distance and difficulty, as well as the trailhead GPS where applicable. The book won’t take you on a mile-by-mile journey—you’re on your own for that one, if you dare…
If you like hiking, you’ll enjoy this book. The stories are real short so it’s an easy read. It’s over 200 pages so there’s lots of stories. There’s ghosts, legends, monsters and history. The locations are real places. At the end of each story it gives details on how to hike the location. It even includes coordinates!
Haunted Hikes by is another great book I picked up while on vacation. It’s one to two page ghost stories and the hikes you can take that go through where each story takes place. They are separated by region. I’ve done several in the North East in the past, having no idea about the ghosts! It’s a fun read.
A great collection of unexplained stories and historical (mostly) mysteries. Makes you want to pack up and go hiking... back to the car and the safety of the couch... Fun for Halloween!
Good stetting off point to start your own research but not the best if you want first hand accounts and antidotes from people. Good history but this book in only a starting point
I enjoyed the folk lore in this book and the directions of how to get to the spots described. I thought it would be more tales of hiker’s stories. Overall kind of boring. A bit disappointed.
