Mars is a rising star in the bear shifter Nomads MC. He has just two days to claim his Fated Mate before their bond disappears, and they have to survive a group of human traffickers who want to take them out.

Mars Donner is tall, dangerous and brutally loyal. His golden eyes melt panties and make men get out of his way. He'd done his fair share of dirt, and even put a few people in the dirt, but he had lines he wouldn't cross. As long as he had his MC, his cut and his hog, he thought he could get through anything. Then he met his Fated Mate, and he knew there was no line he wouldn't cross for her.

Annette Vogel is an investigative journalist and no stranger to chasing a story. Freshly back from Afghanistan, her therapist tells her that she needs to take it easy, that working through PTSD is a process. But Adrenaline junkies don't take it easy, and when she gets wind of a human trafficking circle she has to go after the story. But crossing those kinds of people can have deadly consequences, especially when the story starts chasing her.

This full length bear shifter paranormal romance novel has all the action, steam and true love that only a Fated Mates story can deliver! I've included some other stories as my thanks to you.

"Mars" was everything I thought it would be in a paranormal MC story after reading the prequel, Growl. Hero, Mars was such a likeable alpha man/bearshifter as was the fierce journalist, Annette. I only wished that the story was longer. Really enjoyed how the H/h story evolved as them being fated mates and how they successfully took down the human trafficking ring!

I'm really looking forward in reading this entire series.

4.5/5 growly stars

Note: The Nomad MC was 1 percenters so that said they did participate ins some illegal crimes... but did not want their leader Jackson to turn a blind eye to trafficking in their community.

3.5-4 stars

This was a pretty good story. I liked both Mars and Annette and enjoyed their story. This is the first story I've read by this author and I liked it well enough I'll probably read more of her work in the future.

Annette is an investigative journalist that's currently trying to get a story on some human traffickers. Annette doesn't have any family that's mentioned but we do find out that she was a combat reporter that was in both Iraq and Afghanistan...getting injured in the former and coming home to engage in less dangerous reporting.

Mars is a bear shifter that's 82 years old (shifters are long lifespans in this world) and is the second in command in his Motorcycle club which is also his bear clan. The previous MC president died and that is what brought about the current president of the club. Unfortunately, the new pres gets the club involved in human trafficking and a lot of the members aren't happy about it.

Annette finds a connection in a motorcycle club that can help her with info for her human trafficking story. She meets up with a biker who says they need to meet someone else to discuss the story. This brings about the meetings between Annette and Mars. Mars recognizes Annette as his mate immediately and she feels the pull in return.

The description gives a pretty good idea of what the story entails so I wont add more details. I will say that things take place pretty quickly but I liked the way they worked out. Annette had to accept a lot of things quickly and go with her instincts and she did really well at surfing the craziness and sticking with Mars. TBH, there were times I thought she almost accepted everything a bit too well but it worked and didn't require a major suspension of belief. There is some drama but it's all external to Mars and Annette and they get past the issues together, proving that they make a good team and truly were made for each other. When the story ends, everything has been worked out and Annette and Mars are heading towards and HEA together.

This was a pretty enjoyable story. Annette is smart and tough but still a likable heroine. Mars is very similar but there is a softness when it comes to Annette. Because of their similarities, they are in sync with each other and make a really good couple. The story moves quick but is interesting and I liked the characters so I'd recommend it. :)

Not offensive, just a weak story. DNF 49%

-Think ‘Sons of Anarchy’, but cheesy and rushed.
-The dialogue is too wordy, over explained, and comes across as fake.
-The story moves too fast, too easy, too fake.
-The FMC is copacetic with everything, too cool, too perfect.
-Never got a real feel for the MMC, he was too flat.
-The MC was a washed out version of S.O.A., and presented as all acceptable 🫤
-So not a feminists read, despite the FMC surface tough act:
*Only she is branded by the ‘Goddess’ as being owned.
*Only she is bitten and marked as being ‘claimed’.
*She wears his scent, he doesn’t wear hers.
*She gives up her lifestyle and home for his, no discussion, yes or no mating.
*’Bunnies’, earn their keep on their backs, only women, no males.
*Old ladies are just as replaceable as ‘Bunnies’, only ‘mates’ are privileged to be ‘kept’.

I could go on, but you get the idea.
This will work for some, and not for others. But style and plot aside, the writing was subpar, and the plot not given the space and detail needed to make it work.

In a world where everyone knows the supernatural exists but where those beings tend to keep to themselves, it's no wonder that an investigative journalist is interested. And when there is mention of a possible human trafficking circle and that a motorcycle gang of bear shifters as well as a few mafia members may be involved Annette has to see for herself. But things get complicated really quick when she notices one of the bears checking her out.

This novel was kind of refreshing in its simplicity. There were very interesting points that I have to give Becca Fanning credit for, she knows how to slowly build tension so that the reader keeps reading. I only wish that there was more depth to the novel. All the problems were dealt with on a surface level and there were some issues that were raised and never brought up again that takes away from the story quite a bit.

If I could give it more than five stars, I would. This has to be one of my favorite reads so far. The characters are believable...for being shifters...and storyline was action packed, sexy, just perfect. The first time I read this one I had a book hangover for staying up all night to finish. This is my second, maybe third, time reading it and it is just a great as the first time. I still need to read the rest of the series as soon as my wallet allows me.

Great way to start a series! I love Becca Fanning's bears and this one is my new fave. It's well written, the characters are well-developed, and the dialogue is witty, making for a great read. Mars and Annette are so good together and I love Annette's take no nonsense attitude. I can't wait to see what's next in this series.

Unique

Of you're expecting the same old shifter story, this isn't for you. This book combines shifters with an MC and has unique qualities for both. Enjoyable

3+ rounded up to 4. I enjoyed it, but some of Fanning's usual weak points were evident too, and that kinda kept it from a solid 4 stars.

Annette is an intelligent h, not a screaming type, or one who charges stupidly into danger. She want to help, and does so in her own way. I do wish that she'd had a little more personal conflict about falling in love with a criminal (albeit one with his own moral code). How can you just write it off so easily, especially when your whole career has been about bringing light to the unknown and untold? "Well, they're not in human trafficking anymore, so that's OK - I'm all good with the LSD and harder drugs that they're still running"? Kinda felt like an ostrich in the sand sort of attitude to me.

I like some of the twists to the shifter and fated mate traditions here, though I did feel like Annette and Mars' first meeting was both overly descriptive and hard to follow. Basically, my take-away was "lots of swirling emotions, pain in her wrist(s?), and then she passes out." I think it was just that too much was being said, being described, and the actual point got overwhelmed.

One of my frustrations with Fanning overall is that while I like her stories, she can get very sloppy about the details. The sort of continuity points that a proofreader should spot. Things like names - Jarvis is referred to as Jethro throughout his first appearance (I'm assuming she sticks with Jarvis as the character's name, as that is the title of a later book in the series). Or details - the cartel is El Salvadoran and led by a man named Martinez, and they are double-crossing Ukranian/Russian organizations (again, sloppy details, couldn't quite follow). But at one point, Annette refers to Israeli mobsters. Only time Israeli criminals are mentioned, and in context, it should've been Martinez's group. Things like this add up. Yes, she writes a lot of books, but maybe if she slowed down the production just a little, these sorts of details wouldn't fall through the cracks. They do tend to distract and detract from the story, after all.

Alternating 3rd person POV. Not super gripping suspense, but enough plot to keep a reader engaged and the story moving. Shorter length means that the pacing is pretty quick and plot points might not get as deep a treatment as in a longer novel. No OW/OM/love triangle nonsense. Some continuity issues, sloppy details (and looking at other reviews, this continues through the series - Jackson's name changes to Jefferson at one point, for example - but like I said, kinda common with this author). Lots of lusty mate bond emotions, not much to really show how Mars and Annette have such a strong bond. HEA and no real cliffhangers, though some plot points thrown out for future novels (am betting Kiko and Mischa are a story at some point).

Would I read more in the series? Probably, especially if more free Kindle finds. Would I seek them out specifically? Probably not. Still, an enjoyable bit of escapism.

MARS
BBW Bear Shifter MC Romance MC Bear Mates Book 1
by Becca Fanning
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is amazing edge of your seat MC romance story! What a great start to a series. It has everything you would want read, drama, lots of action, intrigue, and romance. Another great paranormal romance to snuggle up with and enjoy! I am always eager to read Becca Fanning's latest master piece. This is a fantastic, suspenseful, feel-good "fated mate" story. The dialogue is amazing; the story was inventive and substantive. I absolutely enjoyed this book and I know the whole series will be amazing, I'm excited and I can't wait for the next book. Becca has a gift for developing innovative, engrossing and believable stories. She builds believable worlds, she provides amazing details that enhances the story as well as give a three dimensional view of her main and secondary characters. Annette Vogel is journalist that is visiting her psychiatrist for PTSD and she has been told to get out and do another story. Mars Donner is a beta in a MC but he has the strength to be alpha. He is disillusioned with his Prez because he pulled them into the human trafikking business. Annette came to do a story about human trafficking and Mars took one look at her and touched her hand their entire world changed. What a story its so intense, scorching hot and fantastic. I absolutely enjoy MC books and this one is AWESOME!!!!! THIS IS A MUST READ! I certainly recommend this book to readers that like to read a phenomenal alien romance with a HEA and some interesting surprises. I voluntarily reviewed this book, because I love sharing my thoughts with my fellow readers.

This story was much different then I was expecting. I read the free prequel: Growl and thought it was decent but not overly interesting. I tried this story as I wanted a new and different MC read. What I read was great! It is beyond different.

Mars is a grizzly shifter who is the currently the VP in his MC. He meets with Annette (a reporter) to try and out his President in a non-MC involved way. His president has gotten the MC into human trafficking and this is not favorable to the read of the MC and as VP, Mars feels like it is his duty to get them out. When he meets Annette for the first time the Mating band shows and the heat of the story begins.

The passion, lust, steamy scenes and love between Mars and Annette is quick and bold. This is defiantly an insta-love story. I loved the writing and the plot. Yes, it deals with human trafficking but it is done in a non-graphic way, as a reader I felt the emotions and pain of the women but it was not so dark that I had to stop reading or walk away. I read it all in one setting and an exited to read the next is the series. This was such a refreshing version of both a shifter story and an MC read.

My one complaint/issue is that throughout the story the major plot is built up and it ends with no action and in a chapter. It was a letdown as I wanted or needed the outcome to justify the buildup and destruction that was case and that was not the case. It was a soft ending for such a hard topic. I am quite happy with this story.

Mars book was a brilliant from beginning to end. I really enjoyed the story line for Mars and Annette was phenomenal and I found it hard to put it down. I love how the author has combined MC and shifter romance in to one book. Becca Fanning is a fabulous author and this is another example of her amazing work. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

What could be sexier than a bad boy bear shifter with a conscience? Not much if you ask me. Mars is a great lead male character, he confident without being arrogant and he;s respected for his actions, sign me up!

Annette is more than a handful, both physically and mentally. She's strong she's opinionated and she isn't afraid to tell someone that their plan is stupid.

The chemistry between them is hot and fun to listen to, except that part where Annette's v-opening is refereed to as a 'gate', seriously? A gate? Talk about dumping cold water over me, not good.

I get that with mates the attraction is immediate from the bears side but I thought things happened unrealistically quickly from Annette's side. Pheromones will only make me buy so much, and this pushed my limits.

That said I enjoyed listening to it and I'd listen to other books in the series.

The narration is well done, the pace and tone of the delivery is well done and the character voices were distinct and easy to recognise.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

Bears and Bikers

Annette is a investigative journalist and is meeting with a motorcycle club about exposing a human trafficking ring. Mars is a bear shifter and VP of the club. As soon as he sees Annette he knows she is his mate. He touches her wrist and a mating bracelet appears on her. She faints and he takes her back to the clubhouse. She feels a connection to Mars and takes the mating business really well. The first night, a cartel starts shooting and Annette is accidentally shot. She almost dies but Mars does a blood sacrifice and saves her.
As they settle into their lives, Mars challenges the President and wins. He wants to stop dealing with the cartel but learns some disturbing information. They run off the cartel and find a pit of women, living in their own filth. They take them back to the clubhouse and promises them to help them any way they can. Most leave but the ones left, Annette pieces together their stories and writes her story.
Good story. Some errors. And calling the entrance to her vagina “the gate” is really bothersome. Big hunky bear shifters. A beautiful, strong woman. A few secrets and very steamy sex.

MARS is the first book in the new MC Bear Mates series. These will need to be read in the order of release.

Fast paced, steamy, romance within a 1percenter MC club. They may be outlaws, but human trafficking is a line nobody should cross.

I love the great descriptions that allowed me to feel fully immersed in the experience. There is romance, suspense, more than a few giggles, witty banter, and a great story with multiple subplots. I’m looking forward to where this MC will take us in the months and years to come.

Becca Fanning has created a wonderfully inventive shifter world. For example, mates are fated, share their longevity, and gain a “super power.” If only this were true when we found our own true mate!

Note: while I was given this book as a gifted ARC, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

meh ~ it feels only half told

I don’t recommend this one. Sorry, I thought I had a good one here, but no.

There seems to be so much missing from this book. It’s like only half was told and that parts are missing. For example ~ There’s such a big deal about her having PTSD but not the story as to why, not fully anyway, just bits and pieces. There’s no attack to give the reader of feeling what she feels/felt. There’s just a big empty space. The author seems to avoid telling certain parts, like her interaction with the club girls, their interactions with the rest of the club. It’s just so choppy. Towards the end it feels rushed and incomplete. There’s so much throughout the book that isn’t said that you’re left very unsatisfied and disappointed. Unfortunately, as much potential as this story started out having, it fell flat and I’m not even interested in continuing the series. Too bad, it could’ve been so much more and I’d have continued buying books after this one but no, not interested in the least.

I found this book fascinating and interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. What you will find in this book is: a man/bear shifter who is the second in command of the Nomads MC which is a shifter club (Mars Donner), a female investigator/journalist wanting to investigate and help (Annette Vogel), drama, suspense, intrigue, action, twists & turns, some humor, mafia, bratva, human trafficking, bear shifters, betrayal, fated mates, blood tattoo/bracelet/brand, PTSD, explanations, attacks, fighting, rival gangs, blood sacrifice, skirmishes, attractions, lust, emotional feelings, love and erotic scenes. The story-line and plot is well thought out and written and keeps the reader’s attention. The characters are well developed with personalities and moods suited to the situations they find themselves in. This is a well written Bear Shifter MC Romance with a HEA and I will recommend this book to people that like to read this kind of book

The couple: Mars and Annette

Romance genre: MC/shifter
Series: MC Bear Mates
Length: 185

Plot: Annette is a journalist working on a big story, and her contact brings her to a diner in the middle of nowhere. He takes her there to meet with one of his MC brothers, Mars, but they're bear shifters as well, and when Mars and Annette touch hands, there's an instant connection. She's his fated mate, and he has a short time to explain to her what that means. In the meantime, there is a rogue MC president, a human trafficking ring, and a cartel ruining what should be a perfect, stress-free mating.

Commentary: It would have been nice to get a little more background from Annette. She mentions being in a war and having PTSD, but for most of the book, I thought that maybe she was in the military. Then it sounded like she was a journalist - maybe attached to a unit? Freelance? I don't know. However, I did like this one and I definitely liked the little twists on both MC and shifter tropes. Mars was great; he was deep in love as soon as he realized who Annette was to him. Annette was a little more prickly but she was settling into her role in the MC/shifter family. She brought so much to the group through her perspective as a journalist. I'm looking forward to reading more in the series and finding out about who the other bears will be matched up with.
Snorting at the word, she turned to look at Mars, a man who turned into a freakin’ bear, who belonged in not one, not two, but three different kinds of romance novels—shifter/contemporary romance because his hair alone was enough to make any woman weep/MC novel. And this guy was hers.

Next book in the series: Mundo

Annette is an investigative journalist. She got a call on a lead for a human trafficking story from a shifter biker. The meeting didn't go as anyone had planned one look at Mars weakened her knees. One touch changed her life forever.
Mars is a bearshifter who long ago give up on finding his mate. He is the 2nd in the MC and he doesn't like their leader had added human trafficking to thier group. So he is becoming a whistle blower but one look into that reporter eyes told him she was his one. Now that he found her he doesn't want to mess this up.
Lots of action in this story with fun characters and while I don't normally read MC storys this one had my attention and kept it. It lots of spice and intrigue. Shifter and MC fans should have fun with this one.
Voluntary reviewed a copy and I honestly loved it.

My first MC Shifter story and I loved it! Annette is a journalist who's meeting up with an informant for a shift MC gang regarding trafficking. Along the way another member joins them and when they sit down to talk and touch Mars realizes that she's his fated mate, something that's rare. When Annette is told what's going on she's okay with it and they complete the process. Their happiness is short lived though when shots are fired and she's hit and severely wounded. This leads to them finding out the truth about the gang's Prez and in the end Annette gets her story though without her name, which she's fine with.

What an amazing story!! The characters are different then most shifter stories I've read and what a storyline that keeps you enthralled. The rest of the gang members that you get to meet you just want more of and I love the hints of what's to come in future stories.

I like Bears that ride hogs...

I liked the characters in this book; they've definite possibilities . The storyline was a good one, except as soon as we could see the possibillity of a favorable climax in our future, the book jumped ahead 30 days and just talked about what had happened. Letting the story unfold is always more interesting to the reader than talking about the story.
While I'm interested in the characters I've been introduced to, I'm probably not continuing to read this series. The reason? This book was 187 pages long, the 2nd book is 170, according to the Amazon description of them. It seems all the books in the series are less than 200 pages long.To me, $5.99 is too much for a book that's 170 pages long. Since I noticed there are very few reviews on Amazon, I suspect I'm not the only one that feels that way. Pity.

As far as writers go, Becca Fanning is okay but she needs an editor as she struggles with recognising a sentence. She obviously punctuates with the idea of listen to the pauses to know where to insert a comma. This might work well for some and, indeed, I have taught it, but an author also needs to understand how a sentence works. They were way too many run-on sentences and instances where both independent and dependent clauses were punctuated as individual sentences. Fanning’s variety of sentences was good and made for enjoyable reading but a badly punctuated sentence would then destroy the flow.
As far as the book itself went, this one was nothing special. There was a lot of excitement to begin, which fizzled out as leads for subsequent books were set up. The ending was very rushed and anticlimactic.
The shame is that sometimes Fanning stories are fabulous, other times... meh.

A good paranormal romance about an MC full of bears. Good characters with hints of what is to come for them too. Mars and Annette make a good couple. Annette is an investigative journalist trying to get a lead on a drug cartel's sex trafficking ring. Mars does not like the way his Alpha is taking the club and is looking for a way to put a stop to it. When another club member brings Annette to meet him so she can write a story to expose them he is surprised to find his fated mate.
The attraction is immediate and Annette has no idea what has happened but ends up with him at the MC's clubhouse. She ends up shot when the cartel attacks the clubhouse and Mars has to give her blood so she won't die. It gets pretty fast paced from there and it is a good story. They end up saving a group of women the cartel is holding in a pit. Lots more happens and it is a good read.

Mars is a bear shifter in a shifter only MC clan. He is the accountant and happy with his position. Then a friend brings some disturbing information to him. He is also told there is a reporter who wants info and could help with the situation developing. So a meeting is set.
Annette is a reporter who served time on the war fields. Her time was cut short when an explosion was a little too close for comfort. Now she's on her way to meet with a MC member who may help her in her expose.
When Mars meets Annette the mating bands form on her wrist. He knows she's his...his mate. He gets her to the MC clan clubhouse. But danger follows when the clubhouse comes under fire. Annette is injured and he goes crazy. Will she survive the wound? What will Mars do to retaliate?
A fascinating story of a shifter MC clan and how they work

Not sure how I feel about making drug dealers into heroes!

In this book, you have a V.P. of an MC gang who is also a bear shifter meet an ex female reporter suffering from PTSD from her time in Iraq. Mars, the shifter, is in a motorcycle gang. The problem I have is the gang sells LSD and other dangerous drugs and he is fine with it. It seems wrong to turn a criminal into a romantic hero. Does this author even understand the lives ruined by these drugs ? To downplay this national problem is a bit cold and uncaring. On top of the drugs Mars has no problem with killing. The only human side seen was his horror at finding a bunch of women who had been held by a rival gang in a pit to be sold as sex slaves. Other than that there wasn't much to like about Mars or this book.

Heroine, a wounded warrior & now journalist, hero member of a criminal MC clan, how can they be mates

Wonderful story of two stong individuals, from very different walks of life; one strong in her belief of getting rid of those involved with criminals by digging up the truth and the other part of an MC clan hiding those truths. These two will be the ones chosen by fate to be mated. How, with the discovery of their fate and the passion they have for each other, can they stay together. Read this sensual and exciting story to find out how their differences not only actually draw then closer, but helps in getting the clan out from under a human trafficking cartel.

Not really a fan…
Before the book starts, it seems Annette is hit not once but twice in an instant. Not only has she passed out from the effect of finding her mate takes on her but she’s then battling for her life. Mars jumps in and does what he has to do to save her and the read sort of fizzles from there. We learn about all the backhanded things the ex-president has done and get a little into how to make changes and the read is over. Overall this one was okay but nothing exciting to make you want to follow along with the next one. I’ll try it, since I already have it but if I didn’t already I wouldn’t.

Shifters with a different angle (no spoilers)

Mars, a bear shifter in a MC group, meets his “mate” Annette, a newspaper reporter looking to complete an exposé on crime.
Their bond is apparent in just seconds. Annette is physically overcome by the force of the bond and is carried to Mars’ home.
The different angle was a surprise (no spoilers, remember?) which added a layer of enjoyment and complexity to the story. Hopefully this angle will be explored in subsequent books of this series.
