"31 Proverbs to Light Your Path" is a book that gives you wisdom and insight into what God can do in your life. This book is best read one chapter a day, so you can reflect about the message the author Liz Higgs is conveying. There is a short challenge and a prayer included at the end of each chapter. It also has a study guide that is suited for small-group Bible study. The book would make a thoughtful gift. I highly recommend getting a copy. I received a complimentary book from Blogging for Books and was not required to write a positive review.

Liz Curtis Higgs shares stories, insights, and lessons from 31 selections from Proverbs, in a devotional style that takes less than 5 minutes to read per chapter.

Based around 31 favorite verses from Proverbs, each chapter looks at the verse through the lens of multiple translations, often with Mrs. Higgs shring story from her own life as well, ending with a prayer, and a challenge.

I really enjoyed reading this book, and it was not uncommon for me to sit and read 5 or 6 chapters at a time. I liked how Mrs. Higgs shared her stories, and implores her readers to seek wisdom, in a way that is comfortable and conversational, but also challenging. She speaks as a friend, a mentor, honestly and from the heart, sharing stories from her own journey in wisdom.

This is a wonderful book well worth the read, whether devoured quickly or read a chapter a day, it would be the perfect gift for a friend who needs encouragement or a word of wisdom. I really enjoyed the concise chapters, and I felt encouraged to dig deeper into Proverbs. Highly recommend this book.

As she mentions in the introduction to 31 Proverbs to Light Your Path, Liz Curtis Higgs did not just choose the upbeat, feel-good verses from the book of Proverbs to share in this devotional collection. Instead, she asked for suggestions from her friends and readers and chose many passages that convict, provoke deep thought, and step on your toes.

In her signature way of writing with transparency, she shares her own experiences and struggles -- along with touches of her own special brand of humor -- to help readers get all they can out of these gems of scripture.

You can use this book in as light or as deep a method as you want. Simply reading through Liz's comments about each passage shines light that you may have missed on your own read through. The "One Minute, One Step" challenge at the end of each chapter gives a quick and simple way to put some feet to the words you have read. And the study guide at the end of the book gives you an opportunity as an individual or a study group to dig deeper into the scriptures.

I highly recommend this book as a valuable devotional/study for women anywhere in your scripture journey. Thanks to Blogging for Books for providing a copy of this book. I am happy to share my own thoughts in this review.

Although many Christian writers have pondered the wisdom found in Proverbs, few have expressed it and applied it more richly than Liz Curtis Higgs does in 31 Proverbs to Light Your Path (public library) — the inspiring collection of truths and practical insights, which are story-rich devotionals, study driven commentaries, and simple do-it-now challenges she describes as discoveries of “why God calls us to righteousness and how He makes being good possible.” Her goal here is not to show you how to be good. She says: “My goal is to show you how good God is.”

And what a good God He is indeed.

After a speaking conference in Cape Town, South Africa, Higgs boarded a flight to Johannesburg before an eighteen-hour flight home to the US. When she had to disembark via a set of stairs without side rails leading to the tarmac 10 feet below, she refused help with her luggage. Higgs writes:

A smart woman would have stopped at that point and waited for help. An even smarter woman would have asked for assistance before starting down. But a foolish, prideful woman thinks, I can handle this myself, and takes one more step.

Over the side she went, plunging to the ground first.

My thoughts at that moment were concise. This is it. This is how I die.

Long before Higgs fell onto the tarmac, Eve’s pride before her fall changed the course of humanity forever. We all fall when pride goes unchecked. We don’t have all the answers, so it behooves us to never see humility as a weakness, but rater to see hubris as a precursor to destruction:

The Lord doesn’t say pride sometimes ends badly. No, it’s a guaranteed outcome. God’s word makes it plain that a proud attitude brings ruin and an arrogant spirit gives way to a nasty fall.

31 Proverbs to Light Your Path is a devotional treasure in its entirety. It is convicting and Accompany this book with the enclosed Study Guide then revisit Higgs on her blog and podcast.

This is a book specifically designed for women because it is full of proverbs chosen by women. The reader will find the choices and selections perfect for various seasons-both good and bad- of life. This is a very well put together book, perfect for personal or group study. the book of Proverbs is such an essential book in the Bible for continuous reading. Personally, I didn't find this book life-changing. I don't expect books to always be life-changing but this one didn't really teach or inspire me as much as I would have liked. It was very basic.  However, there is always an audience for every decent Christian book, and this one will help and inspire some.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

If I had to describe this book in 3 words I would say that this book is inspiring, fun and life-changing.

The book is composed of 31 chapters where the author first introduces a chapter and a verse and then gives a reflection almost always with personal examples included, this concludes with a prayer and a task to be done.

THE WRITING FORM OF THE AUTHOR MAKES A SUBJECT AS SERIOUS AS THE SEARCH OF GOD SOMETHING FRESH AND FUN, EASY TO READ.

I love it, the only reason I didnt finish this book before is because it is like a devotional so I decided to read one or two chapter per day.

My favorite PROVERB is:

In all your ways submit to him, and he willmake your path straight

The Proverbs: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Life

Four young men have grown up around our dining room table, and the book of Proverbs has shown up as a regular on the breakfast menu, along with the oatmeal and the eggs. Liz Curtis Higgs asked hundreds of her readers to choose their favorite verses from the Proverbs and then narrowed the list down to the top 31 Proverbs to Light Your Path, a month’s worth of daily wisdom, comfort — and jarring insights.

Liz loves words and has dug deep into each text, phrase by phrase, holding the truth up to the light and turning it slowly so as to appreciate each facet. The proverbs are all about wisdom, but the goal Liz has in mind is to assist her readers in savoring God’s goodness. God’s words are an invitation to individual spiritual growth and a deep source of satisfaction for “the hunger no breakfast can satisfy.” (14)

Drawing from personal examples and her own humorous observations of life on this planet, Liz brings unique and refreshing insights to much-beloved sacred words:

“A person may think their own ways are right, but the LORD weighs the heart.” (Proverbs 21:2)

Of the 31 Proverbs in the book, 13 have the word but right in the middle. Liz compares but to “a hinged door” that “leads to another possibility or an important comparison. But can also serve as a flashing light, a warning, a stop sign.” (18)

“A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.” (Proverbs 11:13)

A chatty personality is delightful, and it can come in handy, I’m sure, when Liz is on the road with people coming and going in her life all the time, but she shares the dark side of loving to talk, and the proverbs offer a path of freedom away from the sins that bind us and the bad habits that slow our growth toward righteousness.

In fact, more than a hundred verses in Proverbs focus on the power of words to wound or heal. Having experienced the down side of this equation, Liz invites her readers to dream along with her about a life in which the only words we speak to one another are “pleasant” and “kind” and fair.” (Proverbs 16:24)

“Anxiety weights down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.” (Proverbs 12:25)

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” (Proverbs 17:22)

Anxiety and depression are a reality that cannot be shrugged off with a scriptural band aid. Liz knows from her own experience of swallowing pride and swallowing the daily pill for depression that the “cheerful heart” and anxiety free living are not empty promises — but there are bio-chemical realities that must be faced head on.

And just in case anyone has become discouraged in their reading of Proverbs as a list of good deeds for the habitual do-gooder, Liz makes the important distinction between “doing a good thing” and “doing a God thing.” Generous living and joyous giving flow from a relationship with the God who owns all things.

When Proverbs 18:10 declares that “the name of the Lord is a “fortified tower” and encourages readers to “run to it” for safety, it’s helpful to have a concrete image to connect with the name of the Lord, and Liz has added something to my tool belt: a list of twenty-six names of God in alphabetical order for memorization and meditation. (Thanks, Liz!)

The hands-on, boots on the ground mentality of 31 Proverbs to Light Your Path makes it clear that the light on our path is godly wisdom that emanates from wise choices, righteous deeds, and an intentional following of God that happens over a life time. Each of the 31 Proverbs comes with a One Minute, One Step practical application. Suggestions range from the very simple — list everything you are grateful for — to the more intensely meddling assignment of initiating reconciliation with someone we have wronged, hurt, or offended.

With Bible study questions in the back of the book along with complementary passages that allow Scripture to comment on Scripture, Liz has crafted a resource for individual use or for small group study. The application of ancient truth to a thoroughly modern life begins with opening the pages of Scripture and allowing the Spirit of God to speak Truth into our words, our relationships, and our motives as we are led along His straight paths.

When I want to find courage, wisdom and common sense, Proverbs is my go to book of the Bible. Liz Curtis Higgs is a talented author, writing books for children and adults alike. She writes both fiction and non-fiction genres as well. This book is one that is like a warm light bringing comfort in what can be a dark world.

This author has chosen 31 verses from the book of Proverbs in the Old Testament of the Bible. Each chapter is only a couple pages long. At the end of each chapter, the author has added an application page called, "One Minute, One step." Each of them contain a suggestion of something practical and do-able to apply the lesson of that chapter.

At the end of the book, there are discussion questions that could be included with each chapter and verse to make this either a personal devotional or a group Bible Study. The author has used many different versions of the Bible to delve into as much insight as possible to make these verses come alive for us. She also includes many other Bible verses as cross references when digging into a topic of interest. There's a lot of love in this volume.

I loved this study so much that my copy of the book is all marked up, with underlined phrases, starred special quotes, and parenthesis around passages I want to read over and over. The author brings to the table a transformed life, where she shares her own experiences and insights into these verses. Her storytelling ability held me to the page so many times. I can see that I'm going to get a lot of mileage out of this book.

The part of this book I like best is its conversational nature. I felt as if she and I were sitting at a table with a cup of tea or coffee in front of us, just talking about the Lord and His graciousness. It is both comfortable and meaningful, delightful yet pithy. I gained some new perspectives on life by going through this study verse by verse. If she wrote another 31 verses out of Proverbs and published it, I would be the first one in line to purchase it.

Proverbs tends to  be one of the hardest books of the Bible for me to read.  It's full of wise sayings an  directions for life, of course, but some of the Proverbs are hard to  understand without their cultural and historical context.  Besides that, the chapters aren't a cohesive whole.  Instead, the verses jump for thought to thought to completely different thought.

Since I struggle sometimes with Proverbs, I was excited to use Liz Curtis Higgs's book, 31 Proverbs to Light Your Path, as a study guide/devotional when reading this book of the Bible.  I've loved Liz's writing style since  I  first read Bad Girls of the Bible.  She examines every verse line by line and sometimes even word by word, using multiple translations to give flavor,  context, and greater understanding.

In this book, she studied 31 favorite verses from the book of Proverbs.  Each chapter begins with the chosen verse, offers a brief and refreshing devotional/study of that verse, and ends with a prayer.  She also includes a "One Minute, One Step" activity after each chapter.  These activities are designed to help you put the proverb into practice, but they are also easy and accessible---truly it would take about one minute to  do them.

I used this book as a devotional  while I read the book of Proverbs.   Liz also includes a Study Guide at the back of the book  for book clubs, small groups, and Sunday School classes, or for an individual who wants to journal or dig deeper into  the book content.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own. At first, I didn't know if I was going to get through this book.

It isn't because the book is bad in any way.

It's because Christianity was used as a weapon against me. It was another tool of abuse in a disordered household, and that is unfortunately common. Abusive people like religion, or twisting religion (just to be clear, no God worth anything condones abuse-emotional, mental or physical- especially of a child) to suit their needs.

I have friends who can't walk into a church without having a panic attack. Not because they are not religious, but because it is hard to separate the abuse you experienced with that line of thinking.

You begin to wonder if you will ever be able to go towards God when the shadow of what happened to you is right there waiting in association.

So it took three tries to pick this up and finish it. But I am glad that I did.

Each chapter covers a proverb, explaining it in detail and pairing it with an experience. It's kindly-worded, which people like me need because it gives the text a friendly presence. Better still, the ending of the chapters offers you insight and exercises that in most cases you can complete immediately or soon and that highlights the wisdom of the subject matter. My favorite was the idea of putting away money quietly to give to someone who needs it more than you do. That's lovely. That's the beautiful and kind part of this stuff.

31 Proverbs to Light Your Path is not a super easy read, because much of it will require a thinking-process (think more along the lines of centering versus relaxing) but it's a great book for those who need it.

31 Proverbs To Light Your Path is a 31-chapter compilation of Proverbs, chosen as favorites by hundreds of women. Each Proverb has been selected because of its clear message of God’s faithfulness in our lives, as demonstrated in Proverbs 4:11, “I will instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.” Each of the 31 Proverbs is listed at the top with the chapter heading. The author provides accompanying chapter text in the form of a verse breakdown and explanation. Each chapter also includes a prayer and a “One Minute, One Step” challenge for do-it-now tasks, which readers can accomplish in a minute or less.

This is the second book from Liz Curtis Higgs that I’ve read and reviewed, and I have to say that I’m just as pleased and impressed with 31 Proverbs To Light Your Path as I was with 31 Verses to Write On Your Heart. The author has a lovely, personable way of writing. Her style is conversational and highly encouraging.

There is so much wonderful and insightful information packed into this book. It’s not overly long, just 206 pages, but it’s filled with tons of Biblical teachings that would be suitable for Bible study, church groups, etc. Although the book blurb states that these were Biblical verses chosen by women, I would definitely say this is excellent information for anyone to read through. The study guide at the end has plenty of helpful material for individuals and groups to use. 31 Proverbs To Light Your Path is a wonderful addition to any Christian library. Thanks to Blogging for Books and the publisher for providing a complimentary ARC of this book.

My Review:

Devotionals are a good way to get the one on one time with God that we so desperately need and He so desperately wants with His children. They come in all shapes and sizes. Liz Curtis Higgs is known for her fascinating books and devotionals. Liz takes us through Proverbs. Proverbs is a real good solid foundation to our faith. It teaches us many things. Things that are sort of like rules to abide by as a believer.

I love, love, love the way the author teaches me more about this beloved book in the Bible. My favorite devotion was Less is Best. In this chapter we focus on Proverb 15, living on less. We need to stop wanting more. A life that gives us subtle oddities that slowly become overwhelming because it almost always producing a want for more. A fantastic way to put things in our lives into perspective for a life pleasing to God.

I love this new devotional by best selling author Liz Curtis Higgs. It is a very practical, simple, and useable 31 chapter book. Higgs walks through 31 Proverbs as a guide, teacher, and friend. She also challenges us to one simple reflection or task to that applies or highlights the Proverb in each chapter called One Minute, One Step. I found these to be enjoyable and effective.

One of my favorite chapters of 31 Proverbs To Light Your Path is Chapter 17 Smart Money. Liz walks us through Proverbs 16:16, “How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver.” She points out that thieves can steal your money but not your wisdom. I loved her personal story in this chapter about her new raincoat. I could so see myself in this story! She ends the chapter with a brief prayer asking God to teach her to value what He values. In her One Minute, One Step, Liz encourages us to quickly go through our closets and find an item we haven’t worn in a long time. Then, try it on and if it doesn’t fit donate it to a favorite charity shop. Again, this book is very practical and good for the soul.

I first became acquainted with Liz Curtis Higgs when I read her retelling of Ruth, Mine is the Night. It quickly became one of the books I recommend the most to friends who are looking for a good read. I know you will enjoy this book just as much. I requested a review copy from Bloggingforbooks because i knew I would enjoy it. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own. I have not been compensated.

Where to begin ,This beautiful book has 203 pages but only 176 pages are that of 31 Proverbs . But after those Study Guide goes to page 194. Heart felt thanks , Notes, Additional Bible Versions, and to finish it off About the Author. Proverbs 31 is full of Wisdom and will empower you to live in the light of the wisdom of God. This book has inspired me to read the book 31 Proverbs from start to finish and soak it in like it was my first time reading it. Each chapter is filled with rich scripture, personal stories from Liz, Devotions and my favorite part is the ONE MINUTE ,ONE STEP. What is a one minute one step I bet your asking, I will post a picture of one , but what it is for example one is "Become a secret keeper" and here it will tell you some amazing advice.Poems are amazing in my opinion so the poems in this book melt my heart. " Bless you, Lord, for sparing my life. Please forgive my foolish pride, my stubborn attitude, and my unwillingness to admit I need help. I am grateful for your kindness and even more thankful for your boundless patience. " Another favorite of mine is another One Minute One Step .... " Put aside your pride and ask for what you need". To many times pride takes our everyday lives and makes it a mess, so I will end here with you all need to read this amazing book. I am ever so thankful to have gotten this book to review.

The cover of this book is so beautiful it caught my eye immediately. I thought I like the proverbs and this will be a good devotional book for the month. After reading the first chapter it was so good I went on to read the next chapter. Needless to say I didn’t stick with my one chapter a day plan. The author fills the pages with honest, open, narrative of her own experiences that other women can easily relate to. She even encourages us that if we think we can’t relate to a certain topic in a proverb to think of it in a new way that can apply to our lives. Each chapter ends with a short personalized prayer and then a “One Minute, One Step” exercise. This is the very best part of the book! In each “One Minute, One Step” portion the reader is given a 60 second assignment. Liz challenges us to take the 60 second plunge and do it right then and not put it off to later. She is right on about doing the challenge while the devotional is still fresh in your mind. For example interesting challenges for your soul like putting money away in an envelope and carrying it around in your purse praying for the right person to give it to. Or swallowing our pride and picking one thing we need help with and then asking someone to join us in that task. These short challenges are fun and packed with meaningful self-insights. I loved it!

`31 Proverbs to Light Your Path` is a Christian Women's Devotional by author Liz Curtis Higgs. These Proverbs have been chosen by 100's of women as their favorites. Each favorite has a piece of scripture listed then a devotional to expound on it. Breaking it down into parts so the reader can meditate on it throughout the day. At the end of each segment is a prayer and a bit called `One Minute, One Step`. This one minute step is a short activity to help the reader understand the book of Proverbs for the modern woman. At the back of the book is a section called `Notes`. This section lists Bible verses for each chapter.

I liked the thoroughness of the book and that the daily activities were accessible for most women. I found the devotional easy to use and relate to, and the activities were short and achievable. Biblical truths are conveyed throughout the book. I would recommend this book to readers who want to be enlightened by the book of Proverbs.

"31 Proverbs to Light Your Path" is a devotional study that focused on 31 verses from proverbs. Each chapter started with the verse from proverbs. The author then pulled out each major thought in the proverb and discussed it. She used phrases from different translations to help bring out the full meaning of the proverb. I appreciate that she kept the focus on what God has done (rather than making the reader feel like they need to work harder to measure up). Each chapter ended with a quick activity that you can do to help apply or remember what you've learned. Overall, I'd recommend this book.

From page 6: "As to our being righteous, that is entirely the Lord's work. Righteousness isn't about our goodness; it's about God's goodness. We can't become "right-living people" (MSG) on our own. Our walk with Him is upright only because He bent down to carry a cross."

I received this ARC review copy of the book from the publisher.

31 PROVERBS TO LIGHT YOUR PATH is a lovely devotional that has stories, insights lessons and scripture that will help to brighten your day. Higgs based this book around her 31 favorite verses from Proverbs. Higgs uses one Proverb for each chapter while sharing her own stories, provides an easy to understand translation and ends the chapter with a prayer while challenging you to imply this into your life. This book is a great read that you can share with your friends or family and would make a perfect gift. While reading this book I felt like I was talking to a friend who was sharing stories from the heart of her own wisdom. Again, I feel this would be a perfect gift for someone who needs some encouragement or words of wisdom. ** I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. **

Recently I was given the opportunity to review ’31 Proverbs To Light Your Path’ by Liz Curtis Higgs. She is an amazing author with a knack for writing inspirational pieces and adding her sense of humor to make it so much more enjoyable.

There are 31 different verses, which makes one for each day of the month, and a study guide in the back. The study guide would be wonderful for a personal bible study or to share with a small group of friends.

I also really liked the hard cover and the design on the front cover. It is a beautiful addition to those bookshelves I recently organized!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking God’s wisdom.

This book is an inspirational read that focuses on 31 Scripture excerpts from the book of Proverbs. The author prepares a short devotional chapter for each verse and applies the wisdom found in the book of Proverbs to daily life. Each chapter also includes a section called "One Minute, One Step" which offers challenges and tips for improving your spiritual life. This book would be great to read straight through or to be used as a month's worth of devotional readings. Proverbs is such a well-loved book of the Bible and this is a great book to include with your daily Bible study. Thanks so much to the author and publisher for the chance to read and review this book!

I love Liz Curtis Higgs and I was so excited to read this! This book is wonderful as expected. It would be a great study for a group or as I am doing, a personal study. She takes the verses in Proverbs and literally breaks it down a few words at a time. This I like because it makes me slow down and actually read and consider. So grab your Bible and pick up this book. It holds your attention and makes you think.

31 Proverbs to Light Your Path is a lovely devotional! Ideal for personal and group study, the thirty-one verses from the book of Proverbs are presented in ways that are applicable and actionable. Higgs offers insights, stories, and inspiration, while compelling readers to perform a quick challenge at the end of each chapter. Uplifting and encouraging, I enjoyed spending time in this wonderful book and look forward to using it again and again!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. No review was required, and all thoughts expressed are my own.

Liz is honest and doesn’t pull punches. She tells it like it is. I like that about Christian living books and devotionals.

The only reason I awarded the book four stars because there were a few chapters that repeated topics. For as many proverbs as there are in the Bible, why would there be any need for repeat topics? Sure, the chapter delved into the topic a little bit differently, but the message and “to do” was still the same.

Despite this annoyance, I would still recommend this book as a “want to read.”

I purchased this book from Amazon to read with my friend Kayla. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 31 Proverbs To Light Your Path by Liz Curtis Higgs. This is a great book for a Bible study with friends. Kayla and I broke it into one verse a day reading and studying each verse then doing the small One Minute, One Step at the end each day. An amazing way to look forward to some light in your day and include the way one verse from Proverbs can be associated even in modern times.
