2.5 tarnished stars rounded down because still no 1/2 stars here on GR and this one really lost it's sparkle for me.
I think it's time to move on...
This one actually started out on a fairly good note for me. I was enjoying it. Some parts were a little bit blasé but I was finding more that I thought was cute and enjoyable. Plus bonus points for the restraint on the terms of endearment, either that or I'm becoming oblivious to them but let's go with a more moderate usage.
I didn't even mind, that not since the movie 'Home Alone' have I encountered a more moronic villan than Owen. I'm sorry but seriously, he's committed arson x2, assault x2+, fraud, attempted blackmail, sexual assault, uttering death threats, kidnapping and those are just the highlights from the second book, 'Open House'. Yet this idiot is angry because his employer terminated him without getting his side of the story and he doesn't see that he's really done anything wrong because it's not his fault that he's done all these things no, it's Seth's fault...FFS! Are you serious? That's not deranged in my world that's deranged + stupid. Ironically this didn't really bother me because lets face it this happens in the real world, too. People commit crimes all the time that they don't perceive as being their fault. There's always some 'justifiable' (in their minds) reason why they had to do it. I was easily past the 70% mark in this one and it was looking good that this was going to be my favorite of the series and then it happened...I wanted to scream, to rage...ok, maybe I did a little bit, but hubby and the son are use to this...I couldn't stand it and I actually considered doing a dnf! At over 70%? No, I decided this was not going to happen...I would finish this book and I did...so, now you're wondering..."What? Karen, what in the name of all that's holy made you rage and rant? What happened?...well, you see this is where we have a problem because it was the ending...not, the epilogue. I liked it. The epilogue was actually kinda' cute and definitely sexy...there might have been manites involved...but I'm not telling.
No, it was the actual ending to the story the part that involved our TSTL villian named Owen and this is where my problem comes in because I refuse to spoil a book for someone even one that ended up not working for me, so I really can't tell you exactly why but there was a part of the ending that didn't work for me it was just incredibly unbelievable...to the point of irritation and frustration and spoiling what was probably going to be a solid 3.5 star read.
This is my fourth book by this author sadly two of them...not so great and two of them were just ok. I'm not sure that I'm going to go any further with this. Not every author is for every reader and I guess maybe this just isn't the author for me but there are a lot of lovely reviews for her books out there. So check them out what's a miss for me may very well be what makes it a hit for someone else.
******************** An ARC of 'Open Case' was graciously provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Although it almost doesn’t seem possible, the obstacles and adversity Seth and Bryce have to face in this series are getting worse in each installment. It all began on a cruise Seth and his partner, Mark, had booked before Mark suddenly died and Bryce went on the cruise with Seth. In book two they had to deal with coming home to “reality”, plus face not only the fact that Marks’ death was ruled a suicide, meaning no insurance money for Seth, but that the insurance investigator in charge of the ruling turned out to be Bryce’s ex and a total sociopath. Now they have to deal with the aftermath, and the fact that Owen has still not been arrested or even found. The suspense was high before I even opened the book!
Seth and Bryce are pretty solid as a couple by now, and I think that’s the only reason they manage to deal with and survive all the author throws at them in this third volume. The insurance company still does not admit Mark was killed rather than having taken his own life, but they are prepared to pay a lot of money as compensation for their employee’s crimes. That solves Seth’s financial issues, but it also makes Owen very determined to get a cut of the money – which, for some weird reason, he believes he is entitled to.
When Owen goes off the rails even more spectacularly than ever before, Seth and Bryce’s lives are threatened. They need all their strength as well as the help of friends and family to survive, and had they not been so sure of each other and the love they share, I don’t think they would have made it. Seth has truly grown into his own and goes from strength to strength. Yes, he is afraid and he isn’t always sure what to do, but he shows a level of courage and determination that he acquired through hard work and the trust Bryce has in him. Bryce is as supportive as ever, and dealing with Owen’s attacks has strengthened him as well. This quote describes their development as a couple perfectly: “Like soldiers who’d endured and survived months of attack, Seth and Bryce had witnessed each other under duress and emerged victorious in every way.”
If you like stories about characters who clearly belong together but have to face outside forces that come close to tear them apart, if you believe that men whose love is tested can emerge even stronger, and if you’re looking for a read that is highly suspenseful, emotional, moving, and contains many intimate and loving moments in between constant attacks, then you will probably like this novel as much as I do. It’s a wild, action-packed ride that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Open Case (Open #3) by Mickie B. Ashling M/M Romance Triggers: Questioning sexuality, attempted murder, kidnapping I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.
Seth and Bryce are trying to recover from the storm who is Owen. While their relationship is stronger than ever, there are still questions about their future that need to be answered.
The insurance company is very interested in making this whole fiasco go away and in doing so, it enrages Owen, who has been on the run since the last story.
While I think that Seth and Bryce have a great relationship, they have kind of wonky chemistry. It's not bad, just a different kind of chemistry.
Owen is problematic at best. Malicious, dangerous and terribly unbalanced. He believes that since he is on the run and figures out that Seth and Bryce were paid by the insurance company, he becomes even more unbalanced.
This was a good resolution to this issue. I like how the story concludes. Seth and Bryce are stronger than ever and know that there is really nothing that can break them apart.
Original review on Molly Lolly Four and a half stars! This was the best end to the series. I adored how everything is wrapped up and questions are answered and laid to rest. The suspense came to a fitting end and without any loose threads to pull later on. Plus Seth and Bryce are amazingly happy together and will be together as long as they both live. I couldn’t put the book down!
Seth comes full circle in this story. He’s so in love and can finally be happy with Bryce. But he’s also able to look back with fondness on his past. By the end of the story I couldn’t not love Seth. His emotions are so clear as I read I felt all of the ups and downs in the story with him. It’s amazing to see him blossom throughout the whole series and come a man that’s confident, and knows his own worth. I just want to give Seth a big huge hug and tell him how proud of him I am.
Bryce becomes a little neurotic but his crazy is justified. His fear of losing Seth and what they have because of Owen made my heart hurt. It was lovely seeing Bryce go all in with love and the relationship. He gave his all to Seth and his love for Seth. Oh my gosh, it made him even more sexier which I didn’t think possibly. I adored how he wanted to keep Seth safe no matter what. The protective instinct made me swoon just a little bit. But Bryce’s real strength showed when everything happened in the whole Owen ordeal. I was proud of how Bryce handled himself.
Oh man Owen was off his rocker big time! The suspense plot line with him in this book was written so well. I was on edge the whole time I was reading and wanted to know what happened next. I was surprised at how some of it played out because I didn’t expect it to go that way. However it was done well and being surprised was a good thing in this case.
I loved Bryce and Seth’s happy ending. You can tell they are at a place that’s solid and nothing is going to tear them apart. I enjoyed getting to see on page their full and complete happy ending so you know everything keeps woking for them after the Owen ordeal is over. I would love to see these two again, but you can tell their story is done. Maybe they’ll get a cameo in Kyle’s story. Which I truly want at some point because I want to see that kid make it and be happy as well.
Yes there are things about Owen and how unstable he is that is not so realistic but that does not stop me from loving this series and this book in particular.
I think that because of how crazy Owen is and all the crap that he puts Seth and Bryce through it only makes them stronger as a couple even though it could have very well torn them apart.
Owen is determined that he deserves a portion of the payout that Seth should be getting from the insurance company, but I think his persistence in trying to blackmail Seth only makes both of these men the other one closer.
As far as the relationship that Seth and Bryce have with one another, I love these two together but as I have thought in the past books also, they have a strange relationship. You can tell they care about one another. I think it is Seth's weirdness that makes them the odd couple but honestly that is one of the things that I love about them. They are not just this straight laced couple. Instead they are the odd couple that makes one another truly Complete.
After all the turmoil these two men go through and all the stuff that Owen puts them through I was truly happy that this book ended with the two of them going back to their beginning together. They was ready for a new chapter in their lives and going back to the beginning is the perfect place to start a new beginning togther.
Mickie B. Ashling did an amazing job on this series as a whole and I have to admit that I throughly enjoyed each book in the series.
Was given this galley copy for free for an open and honest review
Open Case is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Ashling. Since it’s book three in a series, my first question while reading was whether it held up as a standalone, and it did, with plenty of references to previous experiences to let the reader know there’s history, but not so much that the previous book is a prerequisite to understanding this one.
The book follows the recipe for a good old fashion action adventure story, with two good guys who are trying to move forward with their lives, and one villain who’s hellbent on trying to sabotage everything for his own personal gain. On that front, my favorite character, in terms of entertainment purposes, was the villain, Owen. He was so insidious and vile that I couldn’t help but drink up his words. I’ve been told that writing extreme characters is the most fun, and it felt like the author enjoyed portraying this hateful character.
In terms of pacing, the story dragged at points. While the overall storyline was a good one, there were several scenes that didn’t really seem to serve any particular purpose other than to have the characters interacting. The character building, as such, was enjoyable, but there were scenes that pulled me out of the immediacy of the action.
That said, fans of the previous two books have much to enjoy in Open Case, I would assume, as many storylines that seem to have been left unfinished from the previous books get wrapped up nicely in this third installment.
This was a great conclusion to the series. We saw Bryce and Seth get closer and more solid while they dealt with the drama of the evil ex. Fortunately that all gets settled, but I did feel for the guys as they tried to navigate everything. It was a whirlwind romance that went kind of outside of what people would say is typical, but I loved that their timeline was different, and the author did a great job of making me believe it. I'm glad I read these.
So here we are Bryce and Seth again. Nothing much has happened between the last book ending and this one starting. There is a time jump but you aren’t lost. The guys just have settled into the new lives. Well, as much as possible. With a killer, embezzler psycho stalker on the loose.
I’m having a hard time reviewing this book and series. I enjoyed the first book very much. But when it was done, so was I and I thought so were the boys, so to speak. So was surprised when I saw book two pop up, and I believe I mentioned that in my review. Book two left us w/a cliffy so I felt complied to read this one even though I wasn’t much invested. Now I’ve finished this one, and I’m left torn.
Seth and Bryce clearly have trust issues that they need to work out. Seth not feeling he has a home. Bryce wanting to be Seth’s everything. By the end of the book, I guess the work it out, they end up with an HEA.
I did enjoy how we got to see Seth grow into his own throughout this story, first standing up to the insurance company, that giving him the courage he needed. And I’m glad we finally got resolution for everyone involved, but I personally could I used less details, like how he lost his tooth and reattached. When Book two ended we were left with a million questions. I don't know about anyone else but I was on the edge of my seat waiting for this book to come out. Knowing it was a trilogy, I knew there everything would get answers and there would be closure.
Let's actually talk about the villain in this story first, Owen. Yes, I know he's not our fantastic MC's (Seth and Bryce) but he's instrumental in the story building and whole of the trilogy. He's a thorn in everyone's side that is causing so many issues. He's extremely dangerous and absolutely off his rocker. I was beyond eager to see Owen and all his madness come to an end.
Seth and Bryce are tested in every way. From book one all the way through to the end. I feel they haven't even had a chance to have a normal relationship and I can't help wondering if after it's all said and done they'll be able to deal with normal.
They are a very strong due and the author writes them well individually. I felt a bit of a disconnect with the pair in this book but I assumed it was because of all that was going on reaching it's boiling point.
This is a very dramatic story. Sometimes overly so. Owen's reign of terror was a bit over the top and with that the nightmare of Mark's life insurance. I think Owen was just a smidgen overdone. I will say I was very happy with the resolution of this trilogy. I enjoyed it!
Open Case is book 3 and the conclusion of the Open Trilogy series. Seth and Bryce are more in love than ever and dealing as best they can in the aftermath of Owen's attack. When they think they're finally catching a break, though, Owen's reappearance will send them in a turmoil which will test the strength of their relationship.
Seth and Bryce were as fantastic as ever and I loved seeing them so in love despite everything they'd gone through. Talk about a trial by fire with having to deal with the issues with Mark's life insurance and on top of that with Owen, who was seriously deranged. While I'm aware this is fiction, I think at one point Owen actually became this caricature of a villain, completely unrealistic and that dampened my enjoyment of the story a bit. It was a bit too much.
Still, the chemistry between Seth and Bryce was amazing and it was nice to see how far they'd come and get their HEA. The writing was great and despite my issues with Owen, I recommend this book for the fans of the series.

Please note that Mickie and I are friends and that I am one of her beta readers. I love Mickie's writing and I really love her books. They are well plotted, well edited and and well written - three things that are extremely important to me. Seth and Bryce are still dealing with the Insurance Company and with Owen. They finally settle with the Company but Owen is a different case. He wants what he feels is rightfully his and he's going to stop at nothing to get it. Highly recommended.
