The main feeling I was left with after reading this novella's companion novel, All I Want for Christmas was that I didn't get to spend enough time with the romantic leads, Holly and Tori, to feel like I really knew them and to experience the swoon of their coming together.
A bonus chapter, and now this novella later, I'm still left with the same slightly disgruntled feeling. I still don't quite feel the chemistry between them. And I find it hard to tell Tori and Holly's personalities apart - particularly in this novella form when there's been a bit of distance since I read All I Want For Christmas.
Stuff happens in this novella. Some of it is very nice, well written stuff. There is some pwoar, there are some crisis', there are some sweet words, our leads go to places then come home again, they look after a kid. They get a cat... ... ... but it sort of felt a bit - anchorless. Why should I care about these characters doing these things at the end of the day? I'm still not sure.
I just realised I'm writing a very cranky review for something I'm giving 3.5 stars... it's good, don't get me wrong. If you liked All I Want For Christmas you should definitely give this one a go. If you feel like a light, easy read, give this a go. It just didn't float my boat as much as I know Lydon's words can and I think I've been left a bit grumpy as a result.
I love the idea that we're going to see more of Tori and Holly in novellas throughout the year. I've said before I love an epilogue in a story and this is even better.
This is another great read by Clare Lydon, it's an excellent edition for anyone who has read All I Want for Christmas. If you haven't read that and start with this then you'll definitely want to go back and see how their story started.
I don't want to give away too much of the story but in this novella we meet the girls not long after they got together and follow their story for the first two months. It's a lovely witty read with the introduction of some of Holly's family, including her cute little sister.
This one is worth a read if you're looking for a novella to pass a few hours. Will definitely be reading the next one on this instalment...
A goldfish, Petula, water bed, keeping Elsie alive, living the lesbian dream, all the ingredients that make you laugh. Tori and Holly trying to build their relationship but of course, nothing goes as planned. A short witty read and a perfect second book in this series.
Tori didn't mean to but when two year old girls get a bee in their bonnet it only takes looking at something and turning around and Elsie vanishes into thin air, in the middle of large department store. OMG! Holly is going to hate Tori for the rest of her life. And who or what is Valentine? Enjoy!
Fluffy but feels a bit aimless. Perhaps if these novellas had been collected into a single novel that spanned the year, it would have worked better for me. But silly and fun and rather tongue-in-cheek.
Nice continuation of Tori and Holly's story. The bus ride back from the aquarium with Elsie was all too realistic, but fun to read (in a been-there-done-that sort of way...) Glad to see that Petula the peace lily survived.
Sweet and readable - but not much happens. It felt like the book was over before it had started. I also found the switch from first person (in the first book of the series, Tori speaks from the first person) to third a little jarring.
When Holly and Tori where able to get you on their hook in „All I want for Christmas“, you will have to keep on reading, because they are not yet done with you.
This short novella involves an important day for lovers, the ultimate pet for lesbians and the biggest (though cute) challenge for every young couple - or humankind in general.
So get back to Holly and Tori and also stay tuned for what happens next, because the author is not done with you, either.
