February 11, 2017Edit #1: Starfall is out in the world! I hope you love it as much as I do. And yes, this book completes the series. My next 2018 release will be The Half King, the first in a fantasy duology. :)
So, let's talk about this book! It takes place shortly after STARFLIGHT ends, but it's more of a companion novel than a sequel. This story is narrated by Cassia and Kane, with Doran, Solara, etc. as supporting characters. Much like STARFLIGHT, this novel stands alone (full plot/character arc, no cliffhangers), and it was a blast to write!

•I've been waiting for Starfall since I read the lovely Starflight this summer, and I was so sure I would love it I wasn't actually worried it could end up in disappointment. The possibility didn't so much as cross my mind. And instead, I found that all the things I'd loved in Starflight were just... missing.
→ I missed the camaraderie, because the crew wasn't together for something like half the time and that, in my opinion, truly affected the story, and not in a positive way.
→ I missed the compelling female lead, because Cassia really got on my nerves -and who'd have thought it? She and Kane were such great supporting characters in the previous book that I sincerely believed their upgrade to main characters would only come as an improvement. And I was wrong.
→ I missed the fun and the thrilling plot, because, honestly? More often than not, I was bored out of my mind.
→ I missed the sweet, slow-burn romance, because again, Cassia. Ugh.
→ And cherry on top, I also missed Doran and Solara because I swear, this book made them look like the most spineless and dull and generally personality-less supporting characters in the universe. Like, sorry I don't have a clue who you even are.
•I feel I should say a few more words regarding why Cassia basically ruined it for me. People, meet Kane Arric, the most loving, devoted, committed boy in the whole galaxy. And now meet Cassia Rose, born with the sole purpose of making him suffer, pine, agonize, of exploiting him and
generally treating him like a dog simply because she can. Her behaviour towards him is horrible. I particularly hated that when they fight, she accuses him of being selfish and self-absorbed or some nonsense because she literally has nothing to hold against him; she doubts him continuously, and gets mad when he so mush as looks at something or someone that's not her. When his mother was , Cassia thought that was the perfect moment to grant him a make-out session as a consolation prize because you know, you throw the dog a bone when he's the most desperate, or it's just no fun. I get that she had other priorities, to put it lightly, but that's no good excuse for being so mean to someone, especially if it's your lifelong best friend.
•Predictable and unnecessary love-triangle. Ple-ease.
➽ I'm sorry, you can't imagine how much, but sadly Starfall does not live up to Starfight, and the main problem is exactly what made the first book so special, that is, the characters. The only one I'd save is Kane, because he's simply adorable (and I totally think Cassia doesn't deserve him). And now I don't know how long I'll need to deal with the fact that that magic is just gone.

“Cassia had a feeling Kane might not follow her instructions to the letter, but she never expected him to come barreling into the docking lot with Arabelle hoisted over one shoulder, shielding his head with his free arm and yelling like his pants were on fire. Behind him, Doran and Solara ran through the open doorway, each armed with a stolen pulse pistol and firing indiscriminately at someone out of view.
So much for smooth negotiating.”
Whoop, it was good to be back in Starflight universe!
There's nothing wrong with Starfall, except for it not being Starflight. I'll explain: first installment was unique in many ways and the most amazing thing about it was its characters. I get why a lot of people feel disappointed with Starfall, because they expected it to be similar to Starflight, but Kane and Cassia are not Doran and Solara, plus in this companion novel the author chose a slightly different style of storytelling: there's less jokes, it's more serious and bloody (?) if I may say so, Kane and Cassia have an absolutely different dynamics from Solara and Doran. I agree that in Starflight they seemed like amazing supporting characters, and they were lighter and funnier than they actually turned out to be in Starfall. Again, I believe there's a reason for that, which I'll explain below.
This book starts with Cassia being kidnapped by space assassins, The Daeva, and she is being delivered straight to her native planet, which she finds in total disarray, torn by rebels and Cassia's abandoned fiance looking for vengeance against her. Now it's up to Cassia as the sole Monarch to get her country out of this crises and find a cure from the dangerous disease that plagues the planet. You see now why I meant this book has a darker tone than the previous one? Of course, the lightness and humor are still there and so are adorable sneak peeks of Doran and Solara (alas, not much of these), and I admit I more than once caught myself thinking that I'd really like to read about Doran and Solara rather than Cassia and Kane, because they are just so cute, I can't even. But, though, Cassia and Kane weren't as adorable as characters from book 1, they still shared a couple of highly hilarious scenes.

“You want me to go screw myself.”
“Close enough.”
But there's one big BUT: Cassia. I must admit she is one of the most annoying heroines in the history of YA. There were moments when I thought I could almost connect with the girl, and I sincerely sympathized with her troubles, but the way she treated Kane is just unacceptable. He is her best friend, he was always there for her, for god's sake, he ran away with her, abandoned his home and mother for two long years, and all she does in this book is doubt him, scream at him, at just, overall, treat him like a dog. Dear Cassia, go screw yourself. Yours, Nastassja. Yes, I do agree with all those people who think Cassia does not deserve Kane.
The other issue I had with this book is pacing: the beginning was really slow and didn't keep my attention at all, maybe only those sneak peeks with Solara and Doran, but as I said there was not enough of those. In the middle of the book the story picked up and held my attention for 100%, but closer to the end things again got mushy and boring I found myself wishing the book would end sooner. The good thing, though, is the mystery part: I found myself following its progress with interest and highly anticipating the outcome of the whole thing.
All in all, Starfall is nice and light sci-fi companion to Starflight, but it lacks in character - or better say relationship - department and humor we so much loved in book 1. Still, I would dare to disagree with highly negative opinions of this book; I believe it does not deserve such harsh critics, but, again, it's a matter of everyone's expectations: I didn't expect much from this installment, so I wasn't disappointed in the end.

I really liked Cassia and Kane's relationship in the first book but here not so much. The relationship was too back-and-forth as well as physical for my liking. Also Cassia did not treat Kane well. Kane knew and acknowledged this but still went back to Cassia. I also didn't care for the plot in this book. The characters from Starflight read odd in this book.
Honestly I don't know whether I would recommend it. I'll leave it up to you to decide.

February 11, 2017Putting it aside for now. Where i adored Starflight, i'm having a hard getting into this. I don't know why i was under the impression Solara and Doran would be around in Starfall. Kane and Cassia just aren't doing anything for me. Even in the first book, i didn't much care about these two.

I did enjoy that this followed Cassia and still had the leads from the first book around the entire time. It didn't live up to the first one to me and the ending felt abrupt.

4 Stars for Starfall: Starflight Series, Book 2 (audiobook) by Melissa Landers read by Amanda Dolan.
This was just packed full of action and intriguing. Lots of great characters getting out of tight situations.

Moving on in the Starflight universe but with Cassia and Kane as viewpoint characters rather than Doran and Solara.
Cassia is a princess on the run from an arranged marriage to a vile neighboring kingdom. Kane is her loyal friend but kept at a distance because Cassia wouldn't be able to marry him. In Starfall, Cassia returns home and encounters plots from both her evil fiance as well as more space-pirates and a simmering rebellion against the monarchy in her own country.
This book is a mess. While it blasts through its plot at a terrific pace in places, it wallows in others, leaving it all feeling very uneven. The central relationship between Cassia and Kane feels incredibly contrived and it's quite ridiculous to have ongoing romantic conflict perpetuated by a series of failures to communicate. One or two is ok, realistic and adds drama. What these pair go through makes me want to give them "Learner" plates for life and degenerates into awkward unintentional comedy a lot of the time.

♣Remember I read Starflight a few days and loved it immediately. I loved the space-adventure and fun and most importantly the characters. Especially the side-characters; Cassia and Kane.
♣I was so glad when I heard the next book will be about them as main-characters. Cassie and Kane had so much chemistry together it was perfect and the angst! Don't even get me started on how much they oozed tension. I couldn't wait to see them upgraded as main protagonist. It turns out all that glittered is not gold!
♣I HATED CASSIA IN THIS BOOK!! I HATE HER WITH PASSION! SHE IS..... I CAN'T EVEN!

I struggled to get into this for ages but I think that was more me than the book because damn so much happened in this book! It is so action packed and the story loves so quickly.
I didn't give it five stars because I struggled with Cassia a bit in this. I didn't agree with some of her choices and the way she treated Kane a lot of the time. Kane is too pure and good for this world and even though he makes mistakes he is always honest with Cassia and I felt like a lot of the time she shut him down or pushed him away and I was sad.
Overall though this was a fun, action packed read!

“The truth hurt more than lies.”
I've been so impressed with Melissa Landers' books in the past, with Starflight being my favourite, but this book was nothing close to her best. The characters weren't as good, the romance was annoying, and the plot had great potential, but unfortunately didn't deliver.
Starflight was my favourite book for the two main characters, and the action packed plot. I absolutely loved Doran and Solara. Their romance, back story, character development... just everything about them was perfect. I was so excited to seem them in this book, but they were barely in it. They showed up here and there, but when they did, they barely had any dialogue, and most of the time they were just "sent off" to do some other task.
I didn't mind Cassia and Kane in the first book, but having the whole book focused around them got annoying really fast. This romance was a lot different than the author's usual books. The characters have already known each other, and been in love for a long time rather than meeting during the first half of the book. Even though I knew that Cassia and Kane would end up together by the end of the book, their romance got so annoying that I started shipping the other guy in the love triangle... And yes, unfortunately this book has one. Throughout the whole book the two main characters go back and forth between hating each other, loving each other, one person hating, while the other person in love, and vice versa. It gets so boring, so quickly, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of people gave up on this book because of it.
The plot behind this story was okay. It could have really been improved with some minor tweaking. We don't experience the intense action like we did in book one until the climax of the story. The plot before that had a bit of action but not enough to keep you wanting more, and stay up super late reading.
I was going to give this book two stars, but I decided on three due to the ending. This book does have a very good ending, and I'm happy with the way it ended. It was a fantastic ending to the duology.
With the slow plot, annoying main characters, and not including my favourite characters, I sadly didn't enjoy the book. While I love the world that Melissa Landers created in this series, I honestly don't know if its worth reading this one. Definitely read the first book in the series, and only read this one if you really liked Cassie and Kane.

In my life I have read several bad second books, but nothing like this.
If I had to describe it I would call it a middle grade book with some strange sexual innuendo.
Disappointment doesn't ever start to cover how I felt toward this book.
There was nothing that worked for it, not a single thing and I don't know why.
I gave 4 stars to the first book: it had great characters who had a great dynamic between them and a fantastic sense of humor.
It was one of those books that makes you smile through it and makes you want to pick the second if only because you loved the secondary characters so much.
The plot was so juvenile and silly that I won't even bother wih it: in the first 50 pages Cassia manages to

I had truly enjoyed "Starflight", which had included too much banter, funny moments and space pirates! And of course I jumped into the chance to read the companion novel! The story of the escaped princess and her best friend and how truly they both wanted to love each other but also couldn't escape their duties,was a hit to my sci-fi heart.
Cassia and Kane are such a funny pair. Always fighting over the laser razor and how each other sleeps, but deep down they truly care for each other. And since I am not one to spoil you, just let me tell you that there is lots of planning and running all over the galaxy with this pair and the rest of the crew!
A great read and one to make me love Melissa Lander's writing even more!

Not quite 3 stars, Starfall is an OK read, but not great. It is a disappointment compared to the first book, Starflight, which was seriously entertaining.
The plotting here was less than meticulous, and the cliche language which added to the campy entertainment in Starflight just fell flat in this one. There were parts of the book that were fun and exciting, but it didn't work as a whole, and the story felt uneven.
I listened to the audiobook version, and Amanda Dolan did an excellent job with the material she had to work with. It's largely because of her performance that I thought the book worth rating up to 3 stars.

Sometimes I have problems with companion books, since I get easily attached to the characters that we initially meet, but that doesn't seem to be the case for Starfall! This book was easy to ease into and just as loved as the first book. I really loved Cassia and Kane even though throughout most of the book I wanted to bang their heads together;) A great read!

Им таки предстоит вернуться на родину, разобраться с войной, эпидемией и кучей врагов, а заодно и со своими сложными отношениями.
Признаюсь, поначалу я была несколько разочарована. Первая треть книги шла со скрипом. Местами было скучновато, местами хотелось биться головой о стену от зашкаливающей драмы, местами авторские ходы вызывали недоумение. К примеру, превращение Кассии в королеву. Я аж подофигела от такого спринта. Это больше походило на синопсис, чем на нормальное повествование. Дэвы-плен-полет-камера-Джордан-Мариус-тыц-бац-королева-муж-в-темнице-Кассия-красава. Чтэээээээ? Серьезно? Лучше бы нам поведали про Кейна, а потом уж при их встрече Кассия бы рассказала, как сама поживала это время. Все равно получился тот же пересказ. И да, после этого весьма убого смотрелись «страдания» Кассии. Как ее все жалеют, ути-пути, отдохни, ты столько пережила, как ты это вынесла… Мне как читателю не понятно, что она вынесла, ибо для меня прошло три страницы текста, а там успели переворот замутить.
И да, первую треть книги я скучала по авторскому юмору, пикировкам Кассии и Кейна (из-за проблем они порой забывали даже огрызаться) и по Дорану с Соларой, их было до обидного мало.
Но с момента встречи с Арабеллой (��озлюбленной Ренни) все наладилось и пошло... нет, полетело в гору. Тут вам и экшен, и война пиратов с мафией, и оружие массового поражения, и интриги-скандалы-расследования, и экипаж "Банши" в полном составе бороздит просторы вселенной и несет возмездие во имя Луны. Типа того.
В общем и целом да, юмора в этой части меньше, драмы больше, но, наверное, иначе и быть не могло. Кассия и Кейн не похожи на Долару. У них другая история, другие характеры, другие отношения. И я даже рада, что романы получились такие разные, но связанные общей канвой. Голоса героев отличаются, образы выдержанные. И все такие живые и юные... Они тупят, геройствуют, ошибаются, исправляются, ссорятся, мирятся, а главное - любят.
Короче, претензии к истории есть. Даже не к самой истории, а к подаче. Но поклонникам первой книги все равно стоит прочесть, ибо "Банши" рулит)))

Man, I really loved this duology. Ate them up like popcorn. It was the perfect mix of high stakes space escapism, slow burn romance, cast of characters I grew to care deeply about, and constant action and stakes-raising. Perfect book to read under quarantine — I wish there was more!

Gosh, that was disappointing. This second installment is a companion to Starflight, and it is a huge step down from the light and entertaining first book.
This companion follows two other members of the Banshee spaceship crew, Cassia and Kane. After being captured, Cassia is thrust into position as queen and must make hard choices and decide who to trust.
Sadly, I just didn’t care. I didn’t care about these characters, I didn’t care about Cassia’s planet. I hated the boring kingdom drama that made it feel more like high fantasy than the crazy space opera vibe of the first book.
While the story is fast paced, Cassia getting captured within 15 pages, it’s just so much harder to get into than the first one. I suppose the plot just isn’t as interesting as them being on the run throughout the galaxy in the first book.
The romance was much weaker here, even adding in a love triangle. And it’s even one of those love triangles where one person has no chance whatsoever and is just there to create drama. This romance is so much angstier than Solara and Doran’s, and not in a good way.
Sucks that this one was so much less interesting than the first. Since the first wraps up as a standalone, I would recommend stopping there and just skipping this one.

January 12, 2018This was a fast moving, fulfilling conclusion but I still can't help wishing for more. Love these characters and the world. There's a teeny bit of a love triangle which makes it very interesting. Great duology!

Having seen a lot of early reviews mentioning how much of a disappointment the companion novel to STARFLIGHT was, I have to say : STARFALL was not as awful as I expected it to be. But maybe it helped that my expectations were so low.
I didn't love the conflict or being in Cassia's head, though I did very much enjoy Kane's POV and basically everything about his character, but neither did I hate everything, either. The read was fast but lacking in the humour of the first in the series and didn't have that same style of thrills and twists. I felt mostly like various objects, people and events were mainly put in the way of getting these two together and delaying the inevitable. Yet it wasn't a frustrating read, either. It just kinda.. lacked.
I did like seeing the other members of the Banshee crew, even if they weren't the main focus, but I'm not sure I'll be adding this one to my shelves. I'm pretty okay having it all 'end' with STARFLIGHT.

I liked this even more than the first book. The relationship between Cassia and Kane is already established, they've been best friends since they were children. They argue constantly, but it's a sign of affection for them. I enjoyed seeing them admit their feelings to themselves and each other and how far they go to save each other. We still got to see the misfit crew from the first book and I love their family relationship. The plot moved at a good pace and the narrator of the audiobook did a good job with the alternating points of view. Great ending to the duology!

After 20% into the book, I still didn't care about the characters or the plot.
So I simply gave up and DNF'd this.
The next book I picked up hooked me in the first page.
20% is waaaaaayyyyyy too long -- for me anyway -- to get into a story without coming to care for any of the characters.

Cassia was annoying and very hypocritical. I still enjoyed parts of this book but it was so much harder when the MC was so frustrating and silly.

DNF at 16%
Nah, I just can't. Can't relate with the characters I know and even liked in the previous book. Can't find anything to grab my attention. Can't proceed why pacing is so weird. I also find Cassia to be super boring and unappealing person. That's why I have to say goodbye.
