About the author

Indira Parthasarathy (commonly known as Ee. Paa.) is the pen name of R. Parthasarathy. Born on July 10, 1930 in Chennai in a traditional Iyengar family. He has received Indian government's Padma Shri award for the year 2010. He has written several short stories, plays and novels in Tamil that have been translated in several Indian and world languages.

He has carved a special niche for himself in Tamil literature - his characters, mostly urban intellectuals, speak very openly and analyze deeply what others say. Most of his novels are set in Delhi, where he lived during his working years, or in the Srirangam area of Tamil Nadu, where he spent his childhood. Some of his novels, such as "Kuruthi Punal" intermingle these two milieus.
He has won several awards including the Sangeeth Natak Academy, Sahitya Academy and Saraswathi Samman Award. He is the only Tamil writer to have won both the Sangeeth Natak and Sahitya Academy Award.

இருத்தியல் குறித்த நாவல் என்று இதை புரிந்து கொள்கிறேன். பல கேள்விகள்....முதன்மையானது தாமோதரன் கதாபாத்திரம்....அவரை மாற்றுத்திறனாளி ஆக சித்தரிக்க அவசியம் என்ன.... அவன் பெண்களை கவரவே பெண் விடுதலை குறித்து பேசுகிறான் என்று சித்தரிப்பது எந்த வகையில் இந்த நாவலுக்கு உதவியது....இப்படி பல கேள்விகள்....ஒரு முழுமை அடையாத உணர்வையே கொடுத்தது.

We all want to be free to pursue our heart's desires, but is it always practical within a society? In my humble opinion, as long as one doesn't hurt another, there is no need for further analysis. 


A little background: Arun loves having beautiful Vimmi as his wife, but he doesn't care to know a thing about her. Vimmi doesn't love him either. She married since she did not see a choice. She is frustrated with her life and as she realises that she needs to do something about it, Arun and Vimmi start to have disagreements, which ultimately leads her to leave him and go pursue her dreams. She stays with her friend, Dhamodharan; With him and their friends, she is able to freely speak, do whatever she wants and thus enjoys her freedom. Radhika and her husband of 15 years have always steered clear of each other's business and their child also prefers the same. Radhika is unable to form a bond with a child and she eventually separates from her husband. Aruna and Radhika grow interested and start living together.  The rest of the story is where these characters' choices take them.


Characters in this story believe they are after their freedom when they really are selfish and basically ordinary humans. Complexities of human feelings and behaviour are explored here and there is food for thought.


It is a short and compelling read and we might not agree with everything there.

மேல்தட்டு நாகரீகத்தைக் கற்பனைக் கலந்து அவர் எழுத்து வடிவில் தந்துள்ளார். அவர்கள் வாழ்வில் நடக்கும் நிகழ்வை நேர்த்தியாகப் படம் பிடித்து நமக்கு எடுத்துக் காட்டியிருப்பார். அவர்கள் மனதில் எழும் போராட்டங்களை அவர்கள் எப்படிக் கையாள்கிறார்கள் என்பது தான் இந்தக் கதை...

The authors philosophical inquires are intersting. Though the novel speaks ahead of its time in few perspective, the author emphasizes conservativeness at the end which is disppointing. But ofcourse it has its moments throughout the novel. Worth reading.

This is my first book of this Writer. Exceptional writing. Detailed analysis of human Life. Psychological aspects in this story are very deep. Every pages are worthy of our time.

சுஜாதா, கல்கிக்கு பிறகு நான் மிகவும் ரசித்து படிப்பது இ. பா. வின் எழுத்துக்கள். Intellectual கதாபத்திரங்கள் மற்றும் உரையாடல் பாணியிலான கதை தான் இ. பா. வின் Trademark. விம்மி - அருண், ராதிகா - ரமேஷ் தம்பதியினர் மற்றும் தாமோதரன் ஆகியோரின் வாழ்வும், அவர்களுக்கிடையில் நடைபெறும் வாழ்க்கையைப் பற்றிய சூடான விவாதங்களே இந்நாவல். விறுவிறுப்புடன் செல்லும் கதையில் விவாதங்கள் மூலம் பல கருத்துக்களை இ. பா. கூறுகிறார்.
