Following the best-selling novel The Last City (Gods of Anthem), La La Land is a must-read for fans of dystopian zombie books, and young adult fiction. Book Order: The Last City La La Land Lies and Legends (coming summer 2017)
Logan Keys says she’s not so much a writer as she is a soothsayer and preparer for those who are still blissfully unaware. Her stories aren’t dystopian but rather a warning for the next generation. When she’s not writing zombies, vampires, superheroes, and robots, she’s fighting against government over-reach and oligarchy using military tactics mixed with a little bit of poetry.
Logan’s currently on her little farm in Kentucky typing away on many projects at once.

This one picks up a bit after the nasty surprise revealed at the end of the first novel and puts us squarely in Anthem's war-hungry society, with our main characters finding themselves becoming increasingly the odd men-and-women out. Tommy still has hulk issues and Liza continues to serious mean-author issues, but I am loving both all the more for it.
I wish that all YA was written more like this. The ideas and the society, while having plenty of similar tones to other YA, is practically overflowing with ideas in comparison. Plus, the mashup of genres is working very well for me. I mean, we're missing werewolves, thank god, but we've got super-soldiers, crazy parties, near-immortal hulk men and plenty of drowning, stabbing, and hanging to keep all you YA lovers in fine form. :)
Because it's not YA without torture... You know it isn't. Admit it. :)
Do I have any complaints? Not really... unless I was in the mood for more plot... but since I didn't expect anything other than a character-based novel full of mashups and cool action and moral angst, I was perfectly okay with it. Not everything needs to be about complicated plots. :) Sometimes it's all about freedom and memory and survival and the growing horror that you're the monster that you're trying to stop.
And as the previous novel ended with a truly nasty surprise, this one does too, but this one's on steroids. :)
Nasty, bad author, to toy with us poor unsuspecting readers like that. ;o I'm totally hooked and it's all her fault!
And as before, I need to thank the author for the chance to review BOTH books. I love being surprised with good stuff. :) EVEN IF it's YA. :)
My mind and heart were racing most of this book. It was simply amazing. The revelations, THE REVELATIONS, had my jaw hanging open on more than one occasion. I couldn't have seen most of the things that shocked me coming if I was using binoculars and looking through a telescope. I was so impressed with the author's ability to keep me guessing. Liza was even more of a strong woman and had to go through so much. Tommy became a real man and made a lot of tough decisions. Theirs was a journey of finding themselves in this new world and figuring out if people were friend or foe. But along the way, they formed that rare friendship that holds together no matter what happens, and boy were they tested again and again. We're also introduced to 'new' characters and new communities (don't want to give away too much there) and given new insight and perspective on old characters. Lots of action because hey, the world is still full of zombies and going to hell in a hand basket. But now it's the living you need to worry about as much as the undead. You don't know who to trust, whose sincerity to believe, and just when you think you have someone pinned as a good or bad guy, you realize there's so many other things at play. The ending was heartbreaking and so hopeful all at the same time and I will be chomping at the bits until the new book comes out.
Thank you, Logan Keys, for giving me this amazing book. Now get to writing book 3. NOW!
I receive this ARC from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review- no payment was taken.
"My heart's been replaced by a sad, limping thing of stone. what a stupid, fickle muscle that beats on, when it should give up."
this pretty much tells you EVERYTHING about my feels right now guys!!!
Dayyum this book was so good and SO FREAKING INTENSE!!!
Logan Keys you honestly amaze me. you managed to make a book so full on with action with scarce a minute to breathe but managed to make it all so phenomenal and not be overdone! I applaud you!
Okay, let's get going with the plot:
In the times of indecision and anarchy, One girl with the musical talents that had left a tainted world in awe has been changed. One boy with the heart of a leader and the soul of a protector was change into a near monster. Liza and Thomas Rippley Hatter find themselves on a path to destruction, yet they desire to fight against the oppressive systems to take back what is theirs. Love. Hate. Jealousy. Forgiveness. You once knew the city of Anthem...well, see how like the new La La Land where nothing is as it seems.
This book guys.
i can't even deal right now.
first off, Logan Keys your writing near ceases to amaze me. Its so lyrical and gorgeous, so many times while reading i stopped and thought dang that was so deep!
This book had me in a a constant panic because every moment that i felt like i knew what was going to happen, it was like nope! just kidding! And something completely different would happen. It was so satisfying! This plot i literally could not tell the next step and again the ending had me spitting out that mouthful of tea in shock (so fair warning dont consume any hot beverages when you're near the ending- because it won't end well.)
Okay but in all seriousness, the first book i found the first half to be a bit slow and lagging and then the second half blew my mind to smithereens. This book is like the second half of the first book but for an entire novel!
I felt mentally exhausted and emotionally worn out.
i cried
i felt worn out. To be honest i wanted a romance between Tommy and Liza so freaking bad and while there are other forms of love out there, i was satisfied but i just wished....
I loved Tommy so much and i was so annoyed at one female character that was buzzing around him when it should have been Liza (in my mind :P)- i ship Liza and Tommy, i can't help it haha
BUT ANYWAY! Don't let that dissuade you, this book is freaking good! read it. do it! Now.
I started out enjoying this more than the Last City. But the enjoyment faded as the book went on and fizzled out completely by the end. A favoured device of this author seems to be characters being written out only to bounce back at a later stage. I love books with zombies. I love books with vampires. I love dystopian scenarios which generate a rebellion. I love post apocalyptic stories. Any one of those would combine well with YA. But NOT ALL IN ONE BOOK!!!!
I also found the chapters too short. Often short chapters can lead the reader on through the story, can make a book a page turner. But an average length of 3 minutes a chapter, it just made the story choppy. Each chapter had a different character's POV and because of the short chapters I kept forgetting that we had switched characters and had to regroup.
It sounds like I didn't like this book - it was OK. I very much liked parts of it. It didn't seem to stay with any one genre long enough for me to relax into.
La La Land is one of those books I couldn't wait to get in my hot little hands. I devoured it in pretty much one setting and then sat staring at the walls wanting to read it again and wanting the next book in the series.
The book starts where Gods of Anthem left off: Tommy and Liza in captivity, forces scattered, the rebellion smashed, fates unknown and shadowy forces at work.
La La Land starts with a hiss and a roar and doesn't give up. The pace is break-neck and I reeled from one event to the other. Faced with life and death and limited resources, our heroes pick up and pack up to find some answers. Crossing a country no longer recognizable, the two have to deal with what's external and inside themselves.
Just when I felt the need to catch my breath, Keys takes her foot off the pedal and introduces a new voice into her series - one in the wilds of a broken America facing its own set of life and death challenges.
The writing in this is poetic and entrancing. I found myself up all night just to get to the end, just to put the pieces of the puzzle together, and analyze the deeper mysteries.
When I thought I had it all figured out, Keys hit me from out of the blue. My cold, dark heart lurched. It might have had feelings. I might have said bad words.
This is one of the best dystopian series out there and if you're a fan of this genre or of humans and monsters - pick it up.
La La Land is the second installment of The Last City Series. A captivating, suspenseful and heart-wrenching story of a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world full of pain, hope, good and evil (where sometimes evil is good and good is evil).
Thought-provoking and action-packed, it will keep you at the edge of your seat, laughing, crying and wanting more!
Gods of Anthem (The Last City) was a phenomenal read, so I was so excited to read La La Land. And holy buckets, Batman! This did not disappoint.
Logan Keys has built this amazing dystopian world that makes you want to live in it. She's smoothed out edges so flawlessly that you lose yourself into this world.
Tommy and Liza are on the run. Liza has no memory of life before she woke up and doesn't know if she should trust this Tommy fellow. But he gets her off the island, and it's just the two of them, so she has no choice. Trust Tommy or die alone.
Soon, their roaming leads them to La La Land, to the place who experimented on humans in order to obtain the perfect war machine--Tommy. And they need his help.
Ah! So much I can say. But I won't. You'll just have to read this awesome series for yourself.
I’ve procrastinated enough on writing this review.
For what felt like such a long time, book 2 of Gods of Anthem series arrived in my kindle. I’ve been waiting fervently for this one since Gods of Anthem destroyed me. If I remember correctly, I said in my previous review that Logan Keys “rocked me to my core” with her GOA.
LaLa Land did the same but in a vastly different way. In a good way or bad, you decide at the end of this review.
The story started off from where we left Tommy, locked in a glass prison with a comatose Liza as his neighbour. Then without a warning, the scene exploded with so much action I was left reeling, wondering what hit me.
Liza finally woke up...and FINALLY met Tommy (Yay! Team Tommy all the way!) But she’s lost something precious to her. My heart bled a little bit but hey, that meant fresh start and clean slate, right? Forwards and upwards as they say. Remember, Team Tommy here.
That was when I decided I needed to have a loooong chat with Tommy and give him a lesson on How to Win your Woman 101. Wait, WHAT?!? Sigh. Alas, I have to forgive him as they were in the middle of the end of the world. Think all the disaster films, TV series then imagine what the world would look like in the aftermath...that’s where Liza and Tommy are.
Chapter after chapter I followed my loves with my heart grasped in my hands (a bit difficult holding my kindle as well) and my nerves totally frayed. Believe me, there’s so much action in this book that it’s better than coffee!
Then we meet a new(?) girl called Dallas. And she has a story to tell. I squeezed and squeezed my brain trying to figure out who she was from GOA but I can’t place her. Even went back to book one to be sure. I just had a feeling I knew her.
Then one of my favourite characters from GOA made an appearance and my heart soared!
For a moment anyway since you know, action sequence? Man! I was floored. I was tossed. Thrown inside a washing machine and still came out dirty in my agonised tears.
One word. NO!
Ok, two words. WHY?!?
In conclusion, this is a sad book. A heart is completely crushed and lay in tatters at the author’s feet (darn her! Oops, sorry! But man!) There was no triumph for me in the end. To quote a popular saying these days: I met Negan.
Read it at your own risk. I won’t be around to throw you a lifesaver. I’m busy trying to put my heart back together.
"The world's a chainsaw ready to cut us into ribbons and we can't be soft."
There may be love in La La Land but it's snuffed out by hate. Smothered by pride. Driven by greed. Destroyed by fear.
"How I know these things is well beyond me. I must have loved and lost, and lost greatly."
The world outside of Anthem is terrifying. And while it might be considered freedom opposed to Anthem's Authority there is always someone in charge. Someone you have to answer to. But at the end of the day, what you should really be focusing on is who is asking the questions. There's a reason they call it La La Land.
Logan had my emotions all over the chart with this book. Her words are so spellbinding. So entrancing. She painted such a vivid picture causing me to be emotionally invested with every word. And so many times I was cut to the core left bleeding out from shocking revelations and unspeakable loss. After reading La La Land I feel like someone needs to coin a term stronger than a book hangover. Book coma? I'm impatient for answers. And desperately holding to hope that things are not what they seem.

Review:
First and foremost I suggest you read book one. As this one picks us up where the first book left us. With Tommy and Liza basically waking to a whole new world yet again.
Things have changed so much and now the battle is even more intense and no one knows who can be trusted. Throw in some new characters and weird creatures and we get one hell of a story.
If you like zombies, and other creatures, YA grab your copy and get reading. Oh yea have tissues.
Wow. The suspense is non-stop! If life wasn't in the way, I would have devoured this in a day! A dystopian TWD meets TVD rolled in one! This had me at the edge of my seat most of the time. Don't get me wrong, this book also has the feels!
I LOVED book one and have been waiting so eagerly for this. La La Land did not disappoint. There's a brutal poetry in the words and the story that grab you and don't let go. Liza and Tommy face a world full of fear, danger, greed, and lust for power. New characters paint a picture of humanity struggling against the wilds of a gutted America. Monsters and experiments, hate and jealousy, love and loss all paint a dystopian landscape that left me breathless. It kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat. A must read for dystopian fans.
This book......how do I do this without giving anything away?? Logan Keys delivers a fast paced, knock you off your axis, won't go how you think it will, heartbreaking, action packed, epic tale!
The Last City is an excellent series and is incredibly well written.I have read a lot of dystopian and post-apocalyptic books, yet this book is unique and fresh.I couldn't put it down until I finished. The author created well developed characters and in depth world building.I highly recommend this book.I received a copy of this book to voluntarily review.
This is truly an amazing creation of a world by Ms Keys! I've never been much of a zombie person, but this book had me hooked! Then add in vampires! And my favorite genre-dystopian! I love this series! The first book starts with two different stories and brings them together in this story. What other twists could Ms Keys throw in the next story! I'm on the edge of my seat and can't wait for the next book.
My heart is broken, shattered into a million little pieces like a sea of red glitter.
The other day, my three year old son, accidentally headbutted me in the nose so hard, I nearly blacked out. And today it happened again, but this time, the now familiar feeling wasn't my baby's fault.
Lala Land holds no punches, none.
It is, in one short word, brutal.
And I loved every second of it.
Lala Land throws us right back into the middle of the action, the world has gone to hell, and trying to survive is the only thing that matter, most of the time... We learn so much about this world, and yet so little, there are surprises around every corner, many of which are truly mind blowing, and we have no idea where this is going to end, or how, but what we can surely expect is a hell of a ride to the end of the world.
But the question is, is it as good as GoA?
Yes! I might even argue it's better.
Why, you ask?
Because, dear reader, it is.
That's all you're getting from me.
I cannot recommend this series enough, if you enjoy dystopian novels, horror or science fiction, you will enjoy this series, it's all of the above, and then some.
La La Land, Just had to say that as I'm so digging this book title, says it all, in my opinion, a bat shit crazy, cuckoo world, La La Land. Rubbing my hands together in glee. This is gonna be soooo good. This Book Picks up where The Last City Ends and we have Tommy rescuing Liza, who is still in a coma from the facility on the island. This starts an arduous journey to safety For Tommy and Liza, who I forgot to mention has woken up. crucial point sorry, didn't mean to give the impression that Tommy the hulk was lugging an unconscious Liza cross country eye roll. This time the story flits between three points of view, We have Tommy, Liza and a new individual Dallas who is living in a remote outpost, with a ton of baggage and also a severe vampire epidemic. To cut a long story short Tommy and Liza's road leads to La La Land. There a ton of drama, misunderstandings and in true crazy cuckoo style some major shocking events. This book doesn't pull any punches if I was shocked by The last City Well La La Land clean knocked me off my seat. I was so not expecting any of it. Don't go into this thinking it's going to be sweet and all HEA'S La La Land is so full of heinous distressing actions it makes you ponder on the nature of humanity. Anyway, There was so much here I didn't guess and this second volume was even better than the first if that's possible. Any book that keeps my brain ticking over long after I've finished has got to be a winner. we all know those stories that speak to us on another level well La La Land for me is such a read. it's so not forgettable in the sea of fiction I read each year. It stands out for all the right reasons, all I need now is book three, so can't wait. I received a free copy of this e-book and this is my honest unbiased opinion.
Holy wow! Ok ok first let me wipe some tears and close my mouth because I look like a fool. Slow clap for Ms Keys. She had me guessing and gasping to the end. I honestly thought I might need a chart to keep up. It was that intriguing but once those puzzle pieces fell and fit it was smooth sailing. I didn't want to stop.
I don't want to give too much of the plot away because this truly picks up where the first left off. We see the group struggling out in the wild trying to make the right decisions. People laid to rest and enemies made. I truly have no words. I just can't wait for the next book!! Hurry!!
I loved Gods of Anthem so much that I had to start stalking Logan Keys to make sure I didn't miss anything else she ever writes. So I was super ecstatic when the preordered La La Land showed up on my kindle. This story has so many twists and turns for my little heart, not to mention a bit of spooky and creepiness. And of course the ending leaves me banging my head on the wall wishing I had waited til the whole series was written before I even started. So, in other words, awesome.
I might've had to wait a while for the second installment in The Last City series, but it was totally worth it.
This epic story continues in the same style as the first book, with different points of view and separate story lines that keep you wondering how and when they will join up.
The characters (new and old) are still 'real' with depth and emotions, and the world building is superb. The pages are filled with non-stop action and suspense, twists and turns, love and hate, and happiness and heartbreak.
The unique and engaging plot kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish, and left me wanting more!
In the haunting follow up to God's of Anthem, Logan Keys takes her readers on a riveting yet unexpected adventure that far exceeded my expectations. The writing was flawless while the characters were beautifully flawed. I simply couldn't put down my kindle and kept me swiping to the next page as quickly as I could.
With little humanity left in this dying world, Keys manages to keep hope alive in the hearts' of her readers. The characters' stories weave together, bringing us closer to them and their journey. La La Land is full of heart stopping suspense with an underlying of courage that can't go unnoticed.
The writing was beautiful and poetic and I can't wait to be devoured by the third book in this series.
Goodness, Specials, and zombies, and war, now with added vampires, oh my!! This was a phenomenal follow up to the original book, keep the same thrilling pace, and added even more into a very complex cast of characters. I truly loved this story, even more than I liked the first. Even though it deals with very heavy subjects, it is still light enough to really enjoy. And my goodness, the complexity of the story with all of its twisty turns, and complete 180's kept me engaged and on my toes from start to finish!!! Truly excellent word crafting and can't wait for the next!!
I love this genre and Ms Keys does not disappoint! This book picks up where God's of Anthem ended. Tommy kicks things off! Literally! It is very fast paced. Ghosts and monsters and Zombies, Oh My!! It grabbed me and ran. Logan Keys writes so well. She drops you right into the action. You can feel what her characters go through. While reading this book you'll want a warm bath and a decent meal. Seriously, I wanted some comfort food and an electric blanket whilst reading this! It took me deep. It kept me glued. I wanted more and I got it. Action packed, suspense filled and a lot of drama. I was scared sometimes too! I whole heartedly recommend this book! This series would make such a great movie or a Netflix show!
Originally I wasn't going to read this... stupidly as most of you know I have over requested on NetGalley and have a HUGE amount of books to get through in the next couple of months. Originally The Last City was on my TBC (to-be-culled) list, but the byline of A ZOMBIE DYSTOPIAN NOVEL gripped its pointy little teeth into me and wouldn't let go. It has been about a week since I have finished the books and I am having a bit of trouble remembering what happened. Don't get me wrong... I really enjoyed them at the time, and powered through both in a couple of days. But it obviously says something about the book if I cant remember it a week later.
As far as genre goes it fits the bill. Set at a time where cancer is killing everyone the zombies don't, the majority of the world is under water and two opposing sides are Waring over the dank, grey 'last city' using any and every means possible (including modifying people in the hunt for the perfect fighting machine) however I feel the book could have benefited from a tad more world building, this might just be me being biased as favorite part of dystopia's is the environments and one of the main reasons they interest me so much.
Liza wasn't the most likable character in book #1.for the first half of the book I found her terrifyingly resilient and brave but once she had met Jeremy she turned into the standard love struck heroine influenced so much by their boyfriends opinion. And as for Jeremy.... i didn't like him from day one. As book #2 centered less around annoying Jeremy and more around lovable Tommy (with the addition of some GREAT new/old characters in a side story line) I found myself getting more into the book and more invested in the characters, although the story was slower with regards to story line progression I indefinitely enjoyed this more than the first.
GoodReads says... "The Last City is a young adult zombie dystopian tale that faces all odds in a post-apocalyptic world. Fans of The Walking Dead, The Hunger Games, and Divergent will devour this thrilling series." ... and honestly it couldn't be more correct.
And as for the ending... We all know that book #3 will be good winning over evil after an epic battle and an inspiration speak from Liza... and I can't wait!!
This books is leaps and bounds better than the first. I'm not sure if it is the sudden shift in Liza's personality or Tommy and Liza together, but I couldn't put it down. Read it in half a day actually.
The only problem I had was Dallas. Honestly, I skimmed most of her parts until about 35% through the book. I mean, I didn't really care about her love for someone she couldn't have. Like at all. Once stuff got real though and you could see her piece in the puzzle, I stopped skimming. (Also, am I the only one who thought she was a guy at first? Seriously took me like 3 of her chapters to realize she was a girl)
All that aside, this book was really good. I'm not so thrilled with the ending and having to wait for the third book now. I can usually guess endings to books, but did not see that coming.
