I include what interests me and exclude what doesn’t interest me. That may be a crude tool but it’s the only one I have.
I said the Hesperus had been “wrecked multiguously by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.”I had never seen this word before, and did not understand its meaning, so I did what passes for normal behavior today, that is, I typed it into the Google search engine. To my surprise, no definition resulted. Google thought that I had mistyped – did I mean “multijugous”, “multivious” or “multifarious”? When I specified (must! contain! “multiguously”!), the only remaining links were to the Google Books page for this book and for a generally positive online review here which gave the use of this word as an example of McPhee’s occasional bouts of “dictionary disease”.
