Full-length novel. Standalone, no cliffhanger. HEA guaranteed.
I managed 50 pages and just couldn't force myself to carry on.
It jumped all over the place so much at points I had to double check I hadn't missed pages. Add to that an insecure child posing as an adult woman and a rich man that blows hot and cold for no apparent reason, on top of being embarrassed his business colleagues may recognize her. It just didn't work for me.
I actually didn't finish this book....I tried. There were times where time just seemed to jump and I thought pages were missing. One page has Jordan leaving King's apartment and the next sentence she's all set up in her own place with a routine down and everything. There were several times where things like that happened. I don't need a TON of details but it just felt like something was missing.
Also her parents are mentioned and it's mentioned that King is her dad's friend but that theme wasn't explored any further. Although i did not finish it I only had two chapters left and it wasn't mentioned again.
Jordan was super immature and kind of annoying at times. King also wasn't dominant at all.
This could have been a good one, it started off interesting and took a completely different route than I was expecting I guess.
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS. PLEASE STOP READING NOW IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE THEM.
The heroine Jordan is a whiney college student who has absolutely no self confidence whatsoever. She's weak and very naive and allowed her best friend Kelsey to lead her around and make every decision for her. After Kelsey is killed in a car accident, Jordan learns that Kelsey installed cameras in her bedroom and bathroom and was streaming her private moments live on an online website to make money. I had a hard time buying into that plot and a harder time trying to understand why Jordan didn't immediately act to shut it down.
The hero Raleigh King is a forty something year old successful businessman who was best friends with Jordan's dad in college. King is at their home when he sees Jordan and is immediately attracted to her and wants to be her protector.
Although I wanted to know how this story ended, there were a number of chapters I struggled to get through and had to skim. Jordan is immature and not a likeable character at all. If she's not feeling sorry for herself, she's being bitchy to someone and is annoying. King didn't act anything like a grown man worth millions and I found it hard to understand why he was even attracted to Jordan at all. Other than meeting her parents at the beginning, nothing is really said about her being the daughter of his friend so I wouldn't even consider the story to be taboo. It was just a weird romance about a younger woman and an older man.
Obviously this was not a favorite of mine, but there are other readers who did enjoy it.
**Updated: I had to downgrade it back to a 1 star...the more I think about it. I made it through out of pure stubbornness and I just can't in good conscience give it more than that.**
I finished it. That's really all I got. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1, because it was successful in making me keep reading to find out "who-done-it". But not much else. Jordan? Ugh. She was a TSTL heroine and I just didn't care about her. King? Meh. The storyline was absurdly over the top...Really? I mean, really?? She is recognized THAT MUCH?! Puh-lease.... And the sex? Also, meh. Nothing to write home about. Also, her parents completely disappear from the story after chapter one. She never talks to, sees, mentions, or even thinks about them ever again. Wth? And they didn't seem like good parents anyway. However, it just struck me as incredibly odd, especially as the book is tagged as a "dad's best friend" book. They hadn't even been around each other in years. AND, I almost forgot, King thinks something about how they particularly drifted apart because of someone named....honestly I can't remember...but then, poof! That's it about all that. Ugh. I don't see me reading anything else from this author and I don't often say that. Save your time and money on this one.
I did not like this one at all. Plot as holey as a piece of Swiss cheese. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one is because it TRIED to be good. I really felt like the author had an interesting idea for a story but perhaps just not enough experience (or talent as a writer) for the proper execution. Such a shame.
This was quite an interesting story with a very new and fresh underlying surprise. It's a may December romance with some dark and surprising twists. King is all alpha and yet supremely refined and soft when necessary. Jordan, God help me Jordan is living in her own dream world. I won't deny that I wanted to shake her more often than not. The writing is a little jumpy and could use another edit but the story was solid and enjoyable. This was a great surprise in a genre that is getting abit repetitive. I'm so happy to see the heroine find a little sass and show her backbone in the end.
King is not your typical older man/daddy romance. King isn't the typical dominating older man out to control a younger woman. Jordan IS a young woman, though, who's been left an inheritance by her best friend Kelsey. So she makes her way to Paris in honor of said best friend. While there she contacts her dad's friend, Raleigh King, when she's accosted by some creep and is just as attracted to him as she was right before she left for Paris. The ensuing relationship is sweet, steamy with a bit of intrigue coming from outside sources. Jordan is pretty young for her age, naive and definitely innocent. She matured and grew up throughout the book, though, which is appreciated. Raleigh is awesome. He's kind, and sexy, and treats Jordan so well. He takes care of her, encourages her, protects her and loves her.
There are a few twists thrown in to keep the story interesting, and it's here where King elevates itself from the typical older man/younger woman triteness. The big reveal about where Jordan's inheritance came from is a nice bit of intrigue, it keeps the plot running along nicely and gives Jordan a chance to grow and come into her own. I like how, even though Jordan comes into her own and grows up, King is always there for her, never trying to control her, just loving her instead.
This review is from: KING: A Daddy's Best Friend Romance (Kindle Edition) I had a really difficult time following this story. It seemed to combine a literary fiction approach to character narration, hung on a framework of traditional romance, and it made for an overall confusing red. The characters begin the book with concerns that are never heard from beyond the first third of the story. King's involvement in/awareness of Jordan is strange because it is never fully explained-- again, the wispy curls of what I think was supposed to be mystery around the characters, suggests this was a deliberate choice. There are some editing issues, mainly spelling/homophone errors. I really wish there had been more exposition, plot continuity, and explanation of the central conflict. 2.5 overall.
This book had promised but was disjointed and not well written. Jordan was a very disappointing lead character who was clueless and jumped to whatever anyone wanted her life to be. I liked King but they were not a match. The sentences ran together with misspellings and typos. I had to reread some parts because it ran together and I couldn't tell if she was daydreaming or really happening. I finished the book. The ending was OK, surprisingly. Unless you are at the bottom of your stack, I wouldn't recommend this book.
I didn't like Jordan. She was so immature and extremely gullible. I was surprised she could get herself dressed without someone telling her what to do. And the worse thing --- she had absolutely no backbone. Don't be fooled by the cover of the book, King was barely alpha, in no way tough and calling her Little Girl was borderline creepy. The book needed editing and the writing was not sophisticated in storyline or characters.
A hot new read from Jess Bentley! Jordan's life feels like it's in shambles after the death of her best friend. When she returns to her parent's house after Kelsey's funeral what she finds is jarring, considering where she just was, when the door opens and the man standing there is a fantasy come to life. Raleigh King didn't expect his friend from college, and new business partner, daughter to be so grown up since the last time he saw her. The draw between them is undeniable, but taboo to say the least. A trip to Paris has King coming to her aide and the connection growing stronger between them. But King knows more about Jordan's life than even she does and when the truth comes out it will take time for them to find that connection again. Jordan has spent her adult life feeling like she's being watched and little does she know just how true that feeling has been, but the reading of her friend Kelsey's will leaves Jordan shaken to the core. I liked that King would stop at nothing to protect Jordan and win her back when everything is reveled. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
This was a cross between Pretty Woman, Hackers and a voyeurism movie. I only rated it four stars because once you pass the cheesier comparisons, you, as the reader can actually see the decent storyline, where the plot is and how the mystery plays out. Jordan, starts out as a young gal who makes all the wrong choices, especially in her friend choices. As the story grows, so does her character, which is a great thing to witness (character growth); King, seemed pretty overwhelming and impressive and a great "take charge" kind of guy. The title needed to be different, because after the first few chapters, there's almost no more mention of how King and Jordan's dad interact.
I have waited a few weeks since reading this book to review it to figure out what I wanted to write. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure this book out. I'm still scratching my head. I had a hard time getting over the fact that the heroine goes from a doormat to this tough as nails, I can take on the world by myself kind of girl seemingly overnight. How do you keep sleeping with someone when you don't even know their first name!! Even the sex scenes seemed impersonal. I'm glad I got this book for free. I'd still check this author's other books, but this one just wasn't for me.
This story is bittersweet. A landscape picture of innocence betrayed all of the way through to maturity established. As Jordan is victimized and eventually, through the healing emotionally, is able to move on and take control of her life.
Raleigh proves his love for her over and over, through the support he provides as a safe haven from the rollercoaster her life becomes.
This is a wonderful story, showing that determination to be yourself can bring a happy ever after.
In a world where we have little expectation of privacy, it becomes so important to find solitude and privacy somewhere. The betrayal by Jordan’s best friend and the constant invasion of personal space was just heartbreaking to read. Seeing Jordan find her footing and confidence, while finding love, was a perfect ending to an interesting and enjoyable story.
Jess Bentley starts out with a story that sounds promising, but turns out to be wimpy and has amnesia. Parents are mentioned I. The beginning of the book and then forgotten about. Your reading and then all of a sudden you have to go back and see if you missed a whole page, because it skipped. The only reason I gave 3 stars is because of the male lead King.
This is a wild story. The storyline between Raleigh and Jordan is dramatic, romantic, sweet and entertaining. The storyline between Jordan and Kelsey is horrifying. As a whole the book is intriguing, Raleigh and Jordan are fascinating characters and I found myself completely engrossed in it. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest opinion of it.
This book was a nice quick read. Jordan had a feeling her friend was hiding a secret from her but never in her wildest dreams did she imagine this. King is determined to help her the best way he can he is he support system till she walks out on him. The ending will be enough to bring you to your knees.
Almost DNF. Probably should have gone that route. I found the writing really choppy. Parts that you would want to read about were glossed over...and others that were not interesting weren't. Needs to be edited for flow. The relationship between the MCs was not particularly believable and I did not feel connected to the characters.
This book didn't make a whole lot of sense. This girl was pathetic. The guy was a pervert. Hitting on his supposed best friend daughter. Were was the parents in the storyline after the first chapter of the book? This author need a little more materials for her books to call steamy.
First, I don't think this should be listed as a Daddy's Best Friend hinting at taboo. The friendship between Jordan's Dad and King is barely mentioned. There isn't any conflict over that. I liked the theme of unknowing innocence, but just felt that the story fell flat for me and rushed at times.
Ultimately, the set up of a sadistic and manipulative "best friend" is what kills it for me. Protagonist has potential, if not by the numbers innocent-like. As for the male lead, he is forgettable. And excise me, why doesn't she know his name? That is one of the least creepy events in this story. Idea is unique, but doesn't come to full fruition.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
I found Jordan to be a little naive, that said it was a good story. I liked the characters and storyline. Good twists and heat that kept me on the edge of my seat. Would recommend.
Wow! What a low thing for your supposed best friend to do! She was not her friend that's for sure! I'm Happy King found out and helped her deal! That's an awful thing to go through!
This was good, it did kinda jump around some but you just had to pay attention is all . What would u do if your father's best friend is someone you can't keep your eyes off of . King has a lot of thoughts running thru his head . Only one way to find out how well they will work out.
The story line was boring and the sex was OK. Not a story line I care for. Made me feel uncomfortable. Most of all I think it missed the part where daddy finds out about the relationship.
I'm giving this three stars because I was left with unanswered questions. Most notably, Bentley should have addressed Jordan's parent's response. Also, there were places that time passed without clear explanations.
This was an ok read for me. I liked the characters and the overall story line, I just felt it jumped a little all over the place and there were a few details that annoyed me but overall an easy enjoyable read
This was a pretty good story, but I really thought this would be more of a Daddy story. He calls her little girl, friend of her parents, thought for sure it was headed that way. The way that it unfolds with Britt, Kelsey, and Jordan was fun to figure out.
