“Nikki Turner has truly brought the female hustlers to light. Fellas betta watch out, because the Girls in the Game are taking over!” –LaJill Hunt, author of Drama Queen and No More Drama
A collection of explosive stories handpicked by the undisputed “queen of hip-hop fiction,” Girls in the Game presents an all-women crew of urban-lit divas. The game here is survival, and every ghetto-hardened gangsta in these tales does what she’s gotta do to make it on–or off–the mean streets. Call them what you will, but until you’ve faced their reality you’ll never know what you would do if you were in their pumps. Just It’s a dirty game, and women are usually the best players.
“The game ain’t to be told but sold. If that’s so, the women in Girls in the Game should be millionaires!” –KaShamba Williams, author of Mind Games
“She’s baaaaaaaack! Nikki Turner has returned, bringing with her the new divas of urban fiction. These ladies raise the bar as they chronicle the streets like never before. Get ready for a literary treat.” –Tracy Brown, author of White Lines
After Nikki Turner read The Coldest Winter Ever by Sistah Souljah she was dismayed that there weren't other books like it. "I wanted to write the kinds of books I wanted to read," said the bestselling author, whose 2002 debut novel, A Hustler's Wife, would go on to sell more than a few 100,000 copies. While Nikki Turner's first two novels were published by a small publishing house in the Midwest, in 2004 she signed a 2-book deal with One World, an imprint of Ballantine Books, which is part of The Random House Publishing Group. After publishing the first book under that deal, The Glamorous Life in 2005 as well as a short story collection edited by Nikki, Street Chronicles: Tales from da Hood, One World quickly signed Nikki up for three more Nikki Turner Original novels and negotiated a deal with her for her own book line, Nikki Turner Presents. "I want to give new authors the same kind of opportunity I was given," said Nikki. "I want to produce authors who will be household names."
The book is made up of short stories of females who do whatever they have to do to keep themselves in the game (to be more specific : keeping their boyfriend or the men the sleep with in check , getting and keeping their respect , etc) no matter . This also included killing others , harming others , stealing from others , or even betraying the ones you truly love . My favorite section of the book was the first short story . The first short story is called " Crowning Miss Baby Mama " by one of the authors who took part in the book who is known by the name of Chunichi . This part of the book was about a lady name Tee who had a baby by a man named Tyrone Simmons who goes by the name of Lil Man . After having the baby , a young lady named Stacey came in the picture . Tee immediately got jealous and had doubts about her . Lil Man was close to Stacey . He beleived she was trustworthy and someone with a warm healthy big heart but that all changed when Lil Man went to jail & TJ - his son - got alchohol poisoning all because of Stacey . Tee , just like most women in the game , got everything under control and got her male friends to handle Stacey . What they did to Stacey ? Find out once you read the book . After reading this book , I learned that you may have alot of friends and people who claim / care about you but always remember to keep your eyes open for the day they switch up on you . Always be Prepared . And when they do up & leave you , cry a river , build a bridge , and get over it . If I could talk to the author one major question I would ask her is : Did you go through what any of the females went through in the book ? I would recommend this book because if defines life , it gives you a big idea on what people may really think about you even if they have a smile on their face everyday saying they care , and lastly because it was the best book I've read so far in life.
Finally a collection of short stories where I like most if not all of the stories. I might have been invested in one or two. Thinking to myself "Come on Renee! Don't go back to a man who cheats on you and put you in this predicament!" There might have been just one that didn't leave me satisfied. All in all a good selection of Urban fiction shorts.
i finished reading this book today (3.13.08) and it turned out to be alot better than i thought. it was about different girls and the lie they lived. It talked about what they how to do in order to make it on the streets (hustle). they all had different ways of hustlin and it wasnt easy accomplishing their goals.
Just finished reading Girls in the game this was a really good book I enjoyed all of the short stories I highly recommend this book to all book clubs and individuals who loves to read u will not be disappoint
This book was so good. I just wish the stories was longer like I wish some of the stories in this book should have been a book of their own. Like I felt they left me hanging like I thought some of those stories should have had a series lol.

This was a really good book for being an anthology. It's sometimes real hard to read such short stories for me. When the story is exceptionally good I want it to continue and I want to get all the details that are left out and that usually can't happen with this type of book. I'm not sure why they're so popular or why I keep reading them. I'm happy and pissed at the book. There were two, maybe three, really good stories in here and I wanted more. Hence me being pissed. On the other hand, they were so good I'm glad I got what little I did get. Tysha's story was awesome, along with Joy's. Meisha C. Holmes' story was probably the best for me. I would love, love, love to read the rest of that one. This is actually the second in Turner's Street Chronicles and I'll be reading the first one in the next few weeks so hopefully it's not anymore painful than this one was. :D
Iloved every story in this book. They all had good lessons to learn, and they all really opened up the lives of those of us that are street girl. Loved it!
