एका रद्दीच्या दुकानात वपु मला सापडले, किंवा भेटले म्हणूया. 'मोडेल पण वाकणार नाही' ह्या विलक्षण कथासंग्रहाच्या रुपात! पुस्तक तसं जुनं होतं. पानं पिवळी झाली होती. दुमडली होती. पण त्यामुळेच मला ते पुस्तक जास्त भावलं. जुनी, कोनाड्यात लपून बसलेली, धुळीने माखलेली पुस्तकं निराळीच! इन मीन दहा रुपयेला मी ते पुस्तक विकत घेतलं. घरी जाऊन वाचलं.. आणि वाचून झाल्यानंतर मनात एक वादळ उठलं. कधी न अनुभवलेलं! काही पुस्तकं विसरता येत नाही. मी सांगू शकेल की हेच ते सुंदर पुस्तक ज्याने मला मराठी साहित्याची गोडी लाऊन दिली. वपुंना नमन!

बरं, माझ्यासाठी वपुंचे 'दोस्त' हे दुसरे पुस्तक. पुस्तक तसं छोटं, मजेदार आणि अंतर्मुख करणारं आहे. पण ह्यास माझा संमिश्र प्रतिसाद आहे. यात काही कथा अतिशय अर्थपूर्ण आहेत तर काही अगदीच टुकार. काही विनोदी आहेत तर काही धूसर. काही वास्तविक आहेत तर काही अविश्वसनीय. पण हं, सर्व गोष्टींना वपुंचा खास असा 'टच' आहे. त्यांची भाषा वाचण्यास अतिशय सोप्पी आहे. गमतीशीर संवाद आहेत.. आणि विशेष म्हणजे, आनंदलहरीत ते केव्हा मनाला चटका लावून जातात ह्याचा पत्ता लागत नाही! पुस्तक वाचून होतं तरी त्या गोष्टी, ते प्रसंग आणि त्या व्यक्ती मनात रेंगाळत राहतात. कधी संध्याकाळचा चहा पितांना आठवतात, तर कधी झोपेतून उठल्यावर अपोआप समोर येतात. मी स्वतः नवीन व्यक्तींमध्ये वपुंची काही पात्रे पहिली आहेत. कथा संपते पण ती फक्त पुस्तकांमधली!

मैत्रीये जमदाडे- माझी एक सखी. तिने एकदा बोलता बोलता अगदी सहज वपुंना रेखाटले. म्हणाली, "हे बघ, माणूस समजून घ्यायचा असेल तर वसंतराव पुरुषोत्तम वाचावं!" मी मान्य करतो. तुम्ही ऐकून चकित व्हाल पण वपु कधीच अमुक व्यक्ती असं का वागला किंवा तमुक पत्रामागील मनोविज्ञान कोणते, हे सांगत नाहीत. वाचक त्यामुळे आपल्या पद्धतीने अर्थ नी तर्क लावतात.. शिवाय हा एक प्रकारचा लेखक-वाचक संवाद!

विषयांतर:
प्रत्येकाच्या आयुष्यात एक असा मित्र येतो जो खोलवर प्रभावीत करतो. जीवनमार्गाला एक कलाटणी देतो. हळू-हळू तो आपल्या विचारांमध्ये, बोलण्यामध्ये, निर्णयांमध्ये उतरतो. प्रतिबिंबित होतो.. पण अर्थातच, आपण त्याच्याकडून किती स्वीकारतो, काय 'ऐकतो' आणि ऐकलेल्या गोष्टी कितपात आचरणात आणतो, हे ज्याच्या त्याचावर अवलंबून.. जीवनात अनेक सोबती बनतील पण 'दोस्त' फार कमी. पण खरा मित्र कोण? नाही कोण? मित्राची व्याख्या काय? हे सर्व सांगणं जरा कठीणच! प्रत्येकाचा दृष्टीकोन वेगळा. अनुभव वेगळा.. त्यामुळे दोस्त म्हणजे एक 'हितचिंतक' असं तूर्तास तरी मानूया.

खरं तर ह्या पुस्तकात अश्या अनेक कथा आहेत जे 'दोस्त' ह्या शीर्षकाखाली मावणार नाहीत. पण हा रँडमपणा आवडून जातो. वपुंची एक वेगळी शैली आहे. प्रत्येक कथेत एक 'फ्लो' आहे. वाचतांना एक तंद्री लागते.. आणि फक्त शब्दांच्या जोरावर वाचकाला धुंध करून, त्याला एका कल्पनेच्या दुनियेत घेऊन जाणं, ह्यापेक्षा लेखकाला आणखीन काय हवंय? नाही?

जेवढे वपु वाचले त्यामधील माझी सर्वात आवडता कथासंग्रह. एका दिवसात संपवावे असे वाटायला लागतं ते पहिल्याच कथेपासून. आयुष्यात आपल्याला फार वेगळ्या छटा असणारे दोस्त भेटतात आणि अशाच दोस्तांची गोष्ट असलेला हा कथासंग्रह. मला प्रत्येक कथेमध्ये काहीसा आपलेपणा वाटला. कुठे ना कुठे पात्र तुम्हाला फार जवळची वाटून जातात कारण पात्र तुमच्या आमच्या पाण्यातील आहेत हे नक्की. प्रत्येक कथेची मांडणी आणि होणारा शेवट टायटलला साजेसा त्यामुळे इंटरेस्ट कधी लूज होत नाही.

Va Pu Kale was one the finest short story writers in Marathi literature. And Dost as a short story anthology is nothing different. 21 stories, most barely 2-3 pages long speak about human emotion in the most heart-rending manner. Kale has this ability to capture feelings in precise words, words that stay with you, words that touch your soul. Simple yet profound. If you can read marathi, I would definitely recommend it.
