In 1982, an editorial director at a publishing house told Cec Murphey, "I'd like you to be a ghostwriter for us." Cec was agreeable and asked how to do it. "You'll figure it out," the editor said. And figure it out he did. Now he's considered to be one of the most prominent and well–loved ghostwriters in the industry.

Cecil Murphey has written or coauthored more than one hundred books, including the autobiography of Franklin Graham, Rebel with a Cause. A collaborator on the bestseller Gifted Hands with Dr. Ben Carson, Cecil resides in Georgia.
Writing a book for another person is called ghostwriting. Cec Murphey is one of the most skilled writers in this area with over 140 published books to his credit and a number of New York Times bestselling books. Many writers have never attempted ghostwriting or co-authoring or collaborating to write the story of someone else. Murphey has tackled this type of writing over and over.
Through a combination of his own personal experience, he takes the mystery away from this area and helps writers learn the value. He gives them a vision for how they too could earn good money but also help others birth stories which would never be written.
Murphey covers the gamut of topics in this well-written book. He defines the terms like book doctor or collaborator or ghostwriter. He goes into ethical concerns and where you find subjects and answers a critical writer question: how do you make money and what do you charge for this service. I’ve got shelves of how-to writing books and only have one other book on this topic (written years ago). This new book is fresh and engaging. Also Murphey has tapped his wide network of other ghostwriters for their experiences and added it to enrich his book. The key application points for the reader are distilled at the end of each chapter into a series of bullet points called a Takeaway.
As I read GHOSTWRITING cover to cover, I found myself nodding in agreement at the wisdom in this book. I’ve written more than a dozen books for other people as a collaborator and rarely a ghostwriter. I highly recommend GHOSTWRITING for anyone who wants to learn the inside story about this much needed area of the writing world.
I appreciated the experience and honesty Cec brought to this book. It was so helpful to see how he's developed his thoughts and opinions on ghostwriting, negotiating, and the publishing process over the years. Ghostwriters (and aspiring ghostwriters) can learn a lot from his methods.
While an interesting read, I skimmed through most of this because it didn't provide the information that I was looking for. This book is heavily focused on if ghostwriting is a good fit for you. I already have an author who I agreed to write for and needed more information on how to start. However, I did get some tips to help me get started in the last chapter.
Full of anecdotes about his ghost writing, Murphey makes this how-to book easy to read. I also love how he summarizes each chapter making it easy to refer back to a topic. I gained confidence in starting my own ghosting project.
This book have let me with such a sense of satisfaction. I feel is complete. The author has been generous sharing her knowledge and expertise in a theme were maybe most wouldn't be willing to.
Excellent book for anyone considering a ghostwriting or collaboration writing project. Cecil Murphey covered every single aspect of the process and gave down-to-earth good advice. I won't be able to loan my copy out; there were too many areas I highlighted. I trust this author's advice. Don't go into this type of writing arrangement without reading this book first.
I've no intention of becoming a ghost writer. I'm just beginning as a writer, but this was worth the read. Picked up several tips and ideas. Lots to read between the lines. My copy is highlighted with plenty of notes in the margins. Enough said?
What a great book. I feel like it has a week's (or more) worth of master classes on writing in general, the publishing industry, and ghostwriting in particular jammed between its pages. I highly recommend this book for authors in general, even if you don't think you'll ever pursue ghostwriting.
