This had potential... but it was all over the place at times, rushed, and never felt cohesive enough. Honey and Aki are interesting. Also right when it even starts to get intriguing, well it ends and it will never be completed since the manga got canceled. Go read classic Cutie Honey classic and skip this mess.

I was intrigued when I saw another Cutie Honey manga was going to be released. Honestly, I’m always intrigued when another edition of an older franchise has been released. So I got my hands on a copy as soon as I could to see what the latest incarnation of Cutie Honey was all about. Cutie Honey a Go Go! is a new standalone manga in the Cutie Honey franchise by Go Nagai, Itou Shinpei, and Anno Hideaki.

As the pages at the conclusion of the manga state, Cutie Honey a Go Go! is based off of the live action Cutie Honey movie released several years ago. However, the original print run of the manga was cancelled. This manga is only one volume, one large volume, but a volume that is incomplete as the original serialization was canceled. This means that the story ends quite prematurely, leaving the plot open ended and the story unfinished.

The story has a bit of a more serious tone than other incarnations of Cutie Honey. Everything is told from Natsuko’s point of view. The police have no leads on why Panther Claw keeps attacking the city. These events seem to occur at random, with Panther Claw’s motives obscured. Every person assigned to the case has the bad habit of being killed or disappearing within twenty four hours. Natsuko is determined to get the bottom of these occurrences.

Aki Natsuko can be a lot to handle, at least in certain of versions of Cutie Honey. The over the top characters and wild antics are usually a draw to the story for me, but here I couldn’t help but feel irritated. While Natsuko was very determined and driven to find out Panther Claws motives, Cutie Honey’s relationship to them, and what Seiji Hayami’s motives were, she also felt overly stubborn and obtuse, refusing to see some of the more obvious character traits in those around her. This strayed from character flaw into simply annoying. The delightfully quirky, bizarre, and over the top feel is muted in this version of the story. Large sections feel much more like a regular cop drama. In one sense this heightens the bizarre feeling – regular police treating super-villains as totally normal in a world that appears otherwise completely like our own is pretty amusing. However, all too often it simply felt odd.

Certain sections are bloated with exposition. The manga flips between the exciting action scenes we’d expect to a total standstill as the police try to parse through the information they have and discover Panther Claw’s motives. This really slowed down the plot in certain places, going straight from fun battle scenes to a long discussion in a police station. The entertaining story of an android with wild powers feels distinctly at odds with the straight shooting detective movie feel of large sections of the manga.

I did enjoy having Dr. Kisaragi in the story more than usual. Certain changes were interesting, and I honestly wanted to see where the plot was going to go. But the story remains unfinished. Sister Jill was never given much screen time. Cutie Honey’s coming to terms with her human aspects and mechanical aspects was never fully explored. The exact motives of certain characters weren’t ever revealed.

Overall, if you aren’t already a fan of Cutie Honey you probably won’t enjoy Cutie Honey a Go Go! very much. Certain parts would probably be confusing to those completely unfamiliar with the series. However, if you are a fan this might be something that you want to add to your collection for completion’s sake.

I bought this on a whim and I was not disappointed. It reminded me what it was that drew me to manga some 20 years ago: it is fast paced, ultra-violent (I mean, people die by the scores and almost no one bats an eyebrow), at the same time comedic and sexy. It makes no apologies, its only purpose being to entertain. Don't get me wrong, there are still some pretty great manga being made, but at least of what's available in English, this strange charm has been lost.

Being Go Nagai's spiritual child, and after a brief search, let me say that the original Cutie Honey was weird, VERY weird (not Devilman weird, but you get it). This here, by Shimpei Itoh, is relatively sanitized, and yet still more daring than 90% of stuff circulating today - because for all that, it is not aimed at mature, but teen audiences.

As the creator informs us at the end, this is the entirety of the material he created for this version of Honey and the story is sadly incomplete, as the series was eventually cancelled. However, he tries to give some sense of closure and he does that competently.

I had some good old fun reading this.

I quite enjoyed this, expected more of a super sentai like plot but it was more like a police thriller. It did have some fun action and I enjoyed the cast of characters especially the main police women who had a no nonsense attitude. The biggest issue is it has a cliffhanger ending and some plots get unresolved but that’s due to the series being canceled which the author, in the collected volume, talks about it’s such a shame it wasn’t able to finish properly. The other surprise was I expected way more fan service due the subject matter while there’s a couple of panels of cutie honey nude and the chapter opening panels have fan service it’s not as prevalent as I was predicted. My last complaint is the collected volume for some reason does not have page numbers listed or a table of contents page which in 2022 doesn’t make a lot of sense.

This isn't finished but it seems to be all the Cutie Honey chapters that Go Nagai had created? It's unclear!

But I love Cutie Honey and am excited to check out all her other media (she's been adapted a BUNCH of times). And if you're into magical girl stuff, then you'll love this too!

It's just not as cutesy as other titles you remember from your childhood. Some fan service/partial female nudity and lots of violence!

It's starts out promising as the first few chapters are a lot of fun and action-packed, but unfortunately the story is cut off and will never be finished. The later half of the book also feels rather rushed, probably because the team knew that it this wouldn't get any more chapters and they tried to cram in as much story as few chapters as possible. It's rather unfortunate because I think this could have been really good if it had been at least twice as long.

2.5/5

I went into this one not expecting to like it at all and was surprised to get something out of it. I collect any one shot I can from books a million as long as it isn't porn and this narrowly avoids the mark with a good bit of unnecessary sexualization.

On the positive side, this book has lots of personality. Character designs are unique, fun, and nostalgic. The story is action filled and contains surprising levels of decapitation and epic, if not generic, battles.

I thought I wouldn’t like the manga but I was really intrigued. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like this, but it was reminding me of the cartoons I watched as a child, and I really enjoyed that. It’s sad that there won’t be anymore but this was good as it was. :)

Decent, kinda goes all over the place near the end and then cliff hangs with no sequel. Ride is fun on the way but ends abruptly

Probably the best thing I have read in some time. I remember the old stuff and the anime and they were great. This reinvisioning continues the action and comedy in a perfect blend. My god I cannot understand or believe that they could cancel the second part of it. Oh well one can only enjoy what they have and this one is soooooo worth rereading again. Savor it.
