As a senior in college, this book really helped me begin to think in terms of my future and how I can maximize my potential. I have yet to start my professional career, and am so glad I read this book beforehand because it brought in made me think critically about myself and my goals. It made me think about what I truly want out of life and how I can achieve it. The book outlines the three different types of Firestarters and through a series anecdotes and questions, helps you determine which type you are. Through reading the book, I learned that I am an initiator. The book explains that each type of Firestarter approaches problems in a different way, and I found it beneficial to learn about the ways that I can harness my strengths as an Initiator, as well as navigate relationships with Innovators and Instigators.
The book also contains excerpts of interviews with prominent Firestarters in a variety of different fields. Although these excerpts were interesting, one criticism I have of the book is that I feel as though it would have been more engaging to read individual chapters about a smaller number of Firestarts rather than a large number of short excerpts. I would have liked more details on how these people were able to rise to the top of their fields, or when they first realized that they were a Firestarter. Overall though, the book was extremely insightful and well-written. I appreciated that it discussed other factors that go into success, such as luck and wealth. Sometimes people are fed the false belief that they can do anything if they simply work hard. This book acknowledges that while hard work is perhaps the most important part of success, there are other variables involved. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to do more in life than just be complacent in where they are now. We can all strive to be better, and this book can help you do just that.

You get the clear sensation of recognising a lot of apparent things while reading it, which is usually a good indicator when reading a self-help book. Firestarters is a self-help book with the aim of helping its readers progress and flourish in their own chosen endeavors. The book as a whole is well written and full of insightful advice. The first few chapters were interesting, but I felt the book really began helping me was sections four: what spread the fire and five: what threatens the fire. What is great about this book, though, is that it does cover everything from finding what you love to do and having the confidence to pursue it to how to keep thriving in your field. This makes it great no matter where in the process you are. The insights from successful entrepreneurs and CEOs was also fascinating. The advice throughout the book is great, but I also really appreciated the questions ‘to spark your thinking’ as they helped me stay engaged with the book. If you are looking for help moving forward with how you think about your career and ideas of success, then I would recommend reading this book.

This book was extremely informative, and appreciated the case study format as a jumping off point. I also love a good workbook that helps apply the theory to personal circumstances.
I did note that many of the Firestarters profiled had access to generational wealth and prestige, or attended Ivy League schools that opened them up to elite networks not accessible to most folks. Additionally many of the entrepreneurs profiled operate companies that serve an elite and exclusive clientele, demonstrating that most innovators are working against issues such as equity and social justice.

This felt more like reading an extended paper than a book. While I appreciate the general framework, the book was waaayy too long (too much of it was summaries of individual interviews and worksheets) and would've worked better in a different format. The end also made it feel like they were trying to sell something. However, I think they gave me an interesting structure with which to think about successful people.

Firestarters was chosen for a leadership team book study for a work team I am a part of and, despite being a part of the group that picked it, it was almost immediately obvious to me when I opened it and started reading that it was not going to be a "good fit" book for me. 😂
The premise of Firestarters is that each person has a strength as either an initiator, an instigator, or an innovator. In theory, individuals and businesses can tap into each of those "types" to create strong teams to grow their business.
As an individual, I did not identify at all with any of the types described in the book and actually felt turned off by their descriptions. This was confirmed when I took the quiz in the book to determine my "type" and scored too low to fit into any of them. I was also extremely bothered by some of the people used to illustrate the types. The authors wrote about them as though they were people we should aspire to model yet I have no desire to model my professional life after people like Elon Musk and Donald Trump (but I likely have different aspirations for my life than they do).
This book is for people who want to succeed financially in business above and beyond all else. And it seemed that, in professional work like what was alluded to in the book, there is no room for humility or compassion. I also could not connect the advice in this book to professional roles that are in service to others (the most important of all work and the foundation of society, in my opinion).
In all fairness, I only read about 40 pages of this book. Had I tried to soldier on, maybe I could have gotten more out of it, but, for me, there is just too little reading time to spend what I have hoping to get inspiration or motivation from a book that got off to such a rough start.
