Robert Beatty is the #1 New York Times best-selling author of the Serafina Series, the Willa Series, and Sylvia Doe — all published by Disney-Hyperion. Loved by both young readers and adults alike, his books are being taught in over a thousand classrooms nationwide and have been translated into over twenty languages across the world. Over ONE MILLION of his books have been sold.

The award-winning Serafina Series is a spooky mystery-thriller about a brave and unusual cat-like girl who lives secretly in the basement of the grand Biltmore Estate, surrounded by the opulence of the Gilded Age and the rugged beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Serafina and the Black Cloak, the first book in the series, won the Southern Book Prize in 2016. All four books in the series became #1 New York Times bestsellers.

Mr. Beatty's second project was the #1 New York Times best-selling Willa of the Wood Series, the story of a young forest girl with ancient magical powers who struggles for survival and understanding in the Great Smoky Mountains. The Willa books are in the early stages of being developed into a live action television series by Lionsgate.

His latest book, Sylvia Doe and the 100-Year Flood, is the tale of a lonely 13-year-old girl and a powerful, magical storm that forever changes her life. The award-winning author Kwame Alexander called it, "Magical realism at its best." Both Kirkus and Publishers Weekly awarded Sylvia Doe with a prestigious STARRED REVIEW.

Robert Beatty lives in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina with his wife and three daughters, who help create and refine his stories. He loves to explore the historic Biltmore Estate and the Blue Ridge Mountains where his novels take place. He writes full-time now, but in his past lives, Mr. Beatty was one of the early pioneers of cloud computing, the founder/CEO of Plex Systems, the co-founder of Beatty Robotics, and the chairman/CTO of Narrative Magazine. In 2007, he was named an Entrepreneur of the Year.

When asked about the inspiration for his writing, Robert said, “My books are inspired by my desire to write about heroic young girls for my three daughters."

Robert Beatty wrote the best book of the series. As soon as I got it I could not put it down.
I am 10 years old and in fourth grade and I read the book in a day and a half.
It is so thrilling, I personally think that people of all ages would love it.
This is nothing like any of the other books I've read, because whenever you think something is going to happen the whole thing starts to change.
The lady that signed me up for this said this was the best book she's read, the best book of the series and she is telling the truth.
I love the special bonding time I have with my grandma. We have book club and discuss the books we read together. She's super excited about getting the book soon.

I am giving this a 5 Star rating because it is my most favorite book in whole world.

Thank you for this wonderful opportunity for me to read the book first and give it a great review.

Once in a while, we find a book, a movie, a song that captures both our imagination and our attention. Robert Beatty weaves a story the way a spider weaves silk for a web, cunning mixed with intricate design and detail. With a beautiful blend of a magical world with a historic reality, Beatty takes his readers on an adventure right alongside the characters of his story. You feel their emotion right through the page, and celebrate their strength and triumphs as your own. I have been a fan since book one, Serafina and the Black Cloak, which I read just before visiting the Biltmore in Ashville, NC for the first time. Before the release of book 2, Serafina and the Twisted Staff, I applied for SART (Serafina Advanced Reading Team) and was so excited to be accepted to the team. But as a life-long reader, I had my apprehensions as sequels have a lot to live up to. I meet Serafina in book one, and watched her become a beautiful heroine in book two. I knew to expect greatness in book three and Mr. Beatty did not disappoint; I was captivated in chapter one and held my breath till the end. I love nothing more than to see good triumph over the adversity of evil, and not only to triumph but to come out stronger on the other side. After all, what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger. Serafina and her friends, old and new have more than their share of adversity in Serafina and the Splintered Heart, and together they remind us that if we stay bold, and rely on our friends we can overcome any obstacle, we can hammer that stubborn nail, and that sometimes we have to start by putting the hammer down.

This series opened strong with Serafina and the Black Cloak but it's been all downhill from there. This third installment is worst of the trilogy with major flaws and few strengths.

Spoilers ahead

I hate unreliable narrators and the book opens with Serafina not realizing that she's a spirit now. Apparently she got split into three parts -- dead human body, spirit, and living panther -- during an unseen battle with a sorcerer who Serafina and Braedon supposedly killed in a past book. Now Uriah is back, flooding the forest, throwing fireballs, killing animals--it's ridiculous. He's supposedly all powerful but instead of attacking the adults who actually own the mansion he only tangles with the children. If he's got so much magic why doesn't he just stroll in and takes what he wants?

A new mythology is only appealing when it makes sense and the one in Serafina is incomprehensible. Add to that fact that the 12-year-old kids all act like they're 40 and the story becomes eye-rollingly silly. (For instance, Braedon starts off this book as lame with his leg in the brace but then proceeds to climb mountains, the side of the house, run away from a forest fire, etc. It's like Beatty wasn't even trying to get his characters to make sense).

Not recommended.

Herkese keyifli okumalar!

Serafina and the Splintered Heart (Serafina 3)

I am grateful to have received an advanced reader copy of Serafina and the Splintered Heart which is a captivating new book written by author Robert Beatty.

This fast-paced book is third in a spooky mystery series about a young girl named Serafina who lives with her pa at the Biltmore Estate, in Asheville, North Carolina. She and her friends are immediately drawn into a new battle with a powerful evil force that threatens the Biltmore Estate and the people and animals she is trying to protect there.

In the first book of the series, Serafina and the Black Cloak, Serafina aches to understand why her pa had been hiding her for the first 12 years of her life. Throughout the second book, Serafina and the Twisted Staff, this young protagonist is pulled toward her destiny as she continues to grapple with loyalty decisions and finds even more surprising discoveries about her own origins. Though Serafina is exhausted from dealing with the Man in the Black Cloak in the first book, by the end of the second book she bravely assumes her role as protector and guardian of Biltmore.

Serafina and the Splintered Heart begins in an unbelievably shocking way, and the thrilling storyline changes dramatically with thought-provoking twists that keep the reader completely entranced! Will Sera lose everything? Who can she trust? Will she become who she is meant to be?

By creating his story as historical fiction, the author places the reader into the elegant 1899 lifestyle of the Vanderbilts who live at their elaborately decorated Biltmore mansion. Mr. Beatty skillfully weaves rich local history of the Cherokee people and the Blue Ridge Mountains into a suspenseful tale that shocks, as well as excites, both the middle school students it is recommended for and all of the adults who can't get enough of this delightful series!

The richness of the language used by Mr. Beatty is impressive and often borders on poetic. The author's vivid descriptions and elaboration added to the excellent and respectful use of regional dialect allow readers to easily sense and visualize exactly what happens as Serafina and her friend, Braeden Vanderbilt, along with her fellow catamount friend, Waysa, find themselves befriending an unlikely foe. The group sneaks around to investigate the terrifying events that are threatening their lives and causing devastating destruction at Biltmore and in the surrounding forests.

The depth of the language, multiple understories, and wisdom woven into the complex plot make this an exciting read that should be on everyone’s must read list.

As the heroine of the series, Serafina is strong and courageous with a depth to her character. Both Sera and Braeden offer appealing qualities and are good role models of perseverance, friendship, and loyalty. Pa’s advice to Serafina gives wisdom that we would all do well to follow.

Thank you, Mr. Beatty, for writing yet another important gift for all of your readers!

Happy to say the third book of this series has not disappointed me, but continues to THRILL!

The book is much darker right from the start. The opening scene in the graveyard is one of the more gruesome scenes I have encountered in a book.

A main character hangs to life by a thread for much of the first part of the book. The sorcerer is determined to kill the guardians and destroy the estate of Biltmore. The battle scenes in book 3 are even more grisly and intense.

The writing is excellent. A compelling and well told story that is as well-paced, descriptive and thought-provoking as it is terrifying and thrilling.

Serafina and the Splintered Heart was a great addition and ending to this trilogy.

Within this book, Serafina finds herself living in the spirit world. It honestly broke my heart so many times that she could see everyone that she loved but that she couldn't touch them, talk to them, or vice versa. At least until Rowena was around and I honestly didn't like her that much.

In the end, I was so glad that Braeden found a way to bring Serafina back because I honestly love their friendship. I just wish that their friendship would turn into a romance but hey - beggars can't be choosers.

I'm excited because I found out there was a spin off series where Serafina and Braeden will still continue their adventures and mystery solving - but it's from a different characters point of view. I really want to find out what the series is called and then find those books as soon as possible. I need more of Serafina and Braeden in my life. I need them to be a couple. I need a lot of things that I didn't get.

Also, I feel like I should mention that the reunion between Serafina and her Pa was freaking adorable and I definitely shed some happy god damn tears. I need more adorableness in my life guys.

I really enjoyed this book! Great characters, awesome plot, and satisfying ending.

I loved how Robert Beatty described Serafina's thoughts and actions. You actually felt as if you were by her side, feeling her emotions, doing her actions, it was amazing. Beatty also really creates unique personalities, and there isn't a character I do not like. I even enjoyed reading about the villain (Uriah). The way Beatty described him was very intriguing and interesting.

I know, I have said this a million times but I seriously love Beatty's writing style. He focuses on describing the story in every sense. He describes beautiful scenery, horrible stenches, delicious foods, creepy noises, and interesting textures. It makes you feel as if you were there yourself.

The plot was...wow! *Mind blown* This book (in my opinion) has the best plot (so far) in the entire series. I REALLY loved how the book started, and I absolutely loved the story line. There are so many unexpected twists, you can not put it down.

The ending was super satisfying too! It made me kind of sad, but I still think it ended beautifully and smoothly.

Excited to read Serafina and the Seven Stars!

*I received an ARC and promised to give an honest review:*

In Serafina and the Black Cloak, Serafina finally learns the truth of her past and where she comes from. In The Twisted Staff, Serafina discovers her true self.

Now in The Splintered Heart, Serafina and her friends will face off against challenges and foes more powerful and dangerous than any they have faced before to once again defend the Biltmore Estate and mountains of which they call home.

During my reading of Serafina and the Splintered Heart, I could hardly put the book down from being so engrossed with the story. The mysteries and plot twists of this book are so that you cannot help but continue reading to find out what happens next. I believe this story is the best one yet and truly does the Serafina series justice.

I highly recommend this book and the series to people of all ages who love fantasy and historical fiction novels.

From the very beginning, the reader cannot guess what is going to happen. The story opens with a thrilling, anxiety-provoking situation that Serafina has inexplicably found herself in and the reader is left equally -- and continually -- perplexed. The mystery deepens as the plot unfolds, making it almost impossible for the reader to put the book down. Beatty’s highly imaginative tale builds on the previous two books but it is not necessary to have read the other two to thoroughly enjoy this action-packed tale. Just when I thought I had something figured out, a twist in the story sent me in another direction. If I, a 63-year-old adult reader of the classics, can enjoy this, then it will thrill adventure and fantasy fans. Best one yet!

Third in the Serafina fantasy-paranormal series for middle-grade readers and revolving around the sweet but fierce Serafina, a shapeshifting girl of twelve, living on the Biltmore Estate of 1900 in North Carolina.

My Take
It's a classic of good versus evil that starts out so scarily. Buried alive? The Black Cloak back and working? Rowena conjuring? Plus the unexpected regrets. Redemption.
"You can accept things the way they are. Or you can make them better."
I do understand why Beatty was so annoying with all the cryptic double talk, and it definitely created tension and drama. It sure kept me racing through the pages wanting to know what was going on! Then there's Waysa's confession about his rescue. Oy. Now, I'm normally the first one to say "off with his head", but Waysa was so compelling in his reasons why he had to save her. Still ticked me off, though.

Beatty uses a third person protagonist point of view from Serafina's perspective, so everything we learn is when Serafina is present. It presents one so skeptical and one so trusting with this battle changing Serafina, as it changes Braeden. One change I enjoyed is her working alongside her pa as they construct a new design.

We also learn quite a bit about Rowena's background, one that makes such sense of her life.
"If you don't like the way you are, you make yourself different."
I love the concept of Biltmore. Essentially it's like a commune that is self-productive, providing a refuge for people who want to live close to the earth. It creates a high contrast between the good of Biltmore and the evil of Uriah.

Then there's that bit at the end...terrifying in its implications, which was nicely offset by Serafina's realization that "all she wanted was to be part of something ... not just to hear, but to be heard ... not just to feel, but to be felt by other people". People with whom we can share the world.

The Story
Everyone misses Serafina, but Braeden and Pa miss her most of all. The worst though is that Serafina cannot connect to them when she returns.

How can she stop the coming storms, the destruction of Biltmore, the danger to her friends, if no one can see her?

The Characters
Serafina has finally learned to shift, becoming a black panther like her father. Waysa is a friend of Serafina's and her mother's; he's also a catamount, another shapeshifter. Pa is in charge of the mechanicals on the estate and has an amazing talent.

The Biltmore Estate was...
...built by George Vanderbilt and is his home with his pregnant wife, Edith, and their orphan twelve-year-old nephew (and Serafina's best friend), Braeden, who has a gift for healing and speaking with animals, but is now greatly damaged. Gidean is his faithful black Doberman, as Cedric, a Saint Bernard, is his uncle's. Cornelius Vanderbilt is George's grandfather.

Essie Walker is the maid with whom Serafina became friends. John is a footman. Mr Fetlan is the master rosarian. Mr Olmsted had been the estate's landscape architect. Mr McNamee is the estate superintendent.

The angel's glade is...
...a place of eternal spring watched over by the statue of an angel and smack dab in the middle of a cemetery.

The Black Cloak was an evil that, it seems, cannot be destroyed ( Serafina and the Black Cloak , 1). But, it also saw Serafina's acceptance by the Vanderbilts.

Uriah is a powerful conjurer, evil, who had created the Black Cloak and now wants revenge for his losses. Rowena is his treacherous fourteen-year-old daughter-apprentice ( Serafina and the Twisted Staff , 2), a sorceress who has evolved to necromancer.

The Cover and Title
The cover is gorgeous with a deeply colorful background of purple mountains, a lightly blue stormy sky with orange and gray clouds above, the intense rain shooting down at an angle. Coming forward, in front of the mountains, is the forest blending from a brilliant green down to the deepest green. In front of the forest is the rocks over which Serafina is running with the most obvious rocks in an amethyst purple. An info blurb is at the very top in white while the author's name is at the very bottom also in white. The fun part is the vintage paper used for the scherenschnitte of Serafina in profile racing across the rocks, her long curly hair floating out behind her. The current is part of it, undulating shapes of parchment beneath Serafina's feet, a metaphor for the flooding rivers as well as a background for the title in an embossed dark, dark purple.

The title is all about Serafina and the Splintered Heart, for Serafina is broken, splintered.

This series is outstanding and got better with each installment. I was honored to be asked to be an Advanced Reader because I am a huge fan. And I wouldn't say nice things if I didn't mean them...it's not my style.

I was introduced to this series because the 6th grade teachers at the school where I am the librarian were using it as a grade level read before taking their kids to Biltmore. I am so glad I found this series. Serafina is a smart, special girl who is a great role model for young girls.

This third installment does not disappoint. From the very beginning, the reader is taken on a journey full of twists and turns that keep you guessing. Serafina awakens from darkness with injuries she can't explain and her world turned upside down. She must protect Biltmore from dark forces that threaten to destroy it, but will she be able to get through to Braeden and her friends and allies in time to save her home and its inhabitants from those who wish to see it destroyed?

Rife with mountain culture and beautiful descriptions of the Blue Ridge, this final novel gives readers a glorious adventure through the mysteries of the mountains. This novel is a must-read for all ages.

Probably my favorite thing about this book is the setting. I love that it is set at Biltmore Estate, especially during the time when the Vanderbilts lived there! I also love its mountain vibe and the mountain twang-type speech from the way some of the characters talk! It’s so cool!

Magic and/or supernatural content:
Shape-shifters, sorcerers, a magical cemetery (that stays Spring all the time), mentions of fairies, and a mention of “the witching hour.” Also, there are mentions of spirits, haints, demons, and ghouls (pretty sure that’s all basically the same thing, but whatever XD). And one person was described as being a “necromancer,” which wasn’t really weird in the book since the only person that girl was talking to was the main character, but describing her as that weirded me out a bit.

Language:
Use of the phrase “what in tarnation” and “oh, lord.”

Other:
I feel like I should mention that this book is a thriller, so younger readers may not feel comfortable reading it.

I have enjoyed this series. Serafina finds herself between beling living and dead. The only person able to communicate with her is Rowena, the daughter of her enemy. Rowena helps Serafina with the help of her friends to where she's brought back to the living. Serafina and her friends decide with the help of Rowena to go after her father. It takes two attempts but they eventually are able to overtake him. This have been a great series and Serafina and her friend Brayden are wonderful and strong characters.

I have loved this older elementary/middle grade series and was looking forward to the continuation of the series. Book 3 is definitely not for upper elementary. The first chapter is very scary for a young person to read.
I felt this story was a bit disconnected to the roots of Serafina. Maybe because she was in spirit form? I, also thought it did not stay true to Biltmore. In his past stories, Beatty connected real Biltmore items and history to Serafina's story. In this book, the real items get destroyed which is not true.; the priceless tapestries do not have claw marks. I was disappointed that he did this; I know authors take liberties, but Beatty didn't do that in books 1 and 2.
It was great to have the "gang" back together. Braeden, somehow can talk and communicate with more animals, including insects. I hope this relationship is elaborated on, in future books. Waysa is a likable character. I was sad to see him leave and hope he will return in the future.
A few disconnected parts were: the black fabric that was floating in the air in the forest. The folds that engulfed Serafina in the beginning. What happened to them? Are they still floating in the forest? How could Serafina punch through her coffin and dig through the dirt but once above ground could only blow air and dust?
This book felt rushed, in my opinion.
I am excited, but timid to read his new series Willow in the Wood. I hope Beatty takes a break after cranking 3 books out in three years! Bring back that mystical/magical allure of Serafina and the Black Cloak in this new series.

This book was nothing like I expected...but it was utterly fascinating and, overall, excellent.

In addition to the suspense, fast-paced action, stunning imagery, and loyal characters of the first two books, this one is deep. Serafina goes on an inner journey and discovers what makes you YOU. This book really explores good and evil, and choice, and spirituality.

It's lovely.

Serafina and the Splintered Heart is the 3rd. I've read all 3 and love them all. Beatty brings Serafina back to like with all her tenaciousness and feistiness. Extreme weather conditions, death, trust, healing, problem-solving, and achieving a strong sense of self are all that Serafina, Braedon, and Rowena deal with while trying to save Biltmore's estate. Lots of action, good character development, and fast-moving. I would definitely recommend this to others who have started reading the earlier novels.
***Caution: first chapter might be difficult for a young middle-grade reader

I was lucky enough to be given an advance copy to review. In a word, I couldn't put the book down. Especially during the opening chapters, I was completely riveted with the storyline. Later in the book I kept reading in stunned disbelief as to what was happening -- or should I say I was feeling "this can't be happening." To say it is a page turner is an understatement. I had allotted about a week to read the book -- I finished it in just over one day. I love the historical fiction aspect -- as in the earlier two books Beatty has continued providing incredible factual elements including the time period, the Biltmore Estate, and the Cherokee culture. Fabulous job.

Mr. Beatty has finished the Serafina series on a high note! The Splintered Heart is by far my favorite of the three, pulling me in with the very first paragraph. And as my fourth-grade son and I realized as we read the book aloud together before bedtime, the author has a knack for arranging the chapter breaks in such a way that it is impossible to stick with my declarations of "only one chapter tonight." Must...keep...reading! We journeyed with these endearing main characters through trial after trial, learning some important lessons along the way. I appreciate that Mr. Beatty incorporates these bits of wisdom through these ever-evolving characters, as not all YA book authors take the opportunity to reinforce messages that youth may not fully absorb when always coming from their parents. If I may offer any criticism, it's that he is ending this series...though I look forward to checking in on Serafna and Braeden periodically through his forth-coming series about a twelve year old girl named Willa. My son and I are holding out hope that Willa will capture our hearts the way that Serafina has.

I'm so sad it's over! :( I loved how this story started and how it wrapped up. I will miss Serafina, Braeden & Waysa. When I started this series I honestly didn't know what to expect, it had all the great elements of a awesome story and so much more. This is one of my favorite series and I am so looking forward to read more of Robert Beatty's books.

I don't even know where to start, since this is the final book I really want to avoid giving a lot away. The beginning of this book had me freaking out, I had no idea what direction it was going to go. I thought it was very well done, I liked how it all played out, I loved how it ended. The evil they thought they defeated in the last book is back and things are all different for Serafina, she needs her friends more than ever now. Serafina is such a strong character, she has a lot of spunk and even if she is a little unsure of the outcome she still goes in head first. She isn't afraid to make mistakes and seems to challenge herself a lot. She is a fantastic roll model for girls. Braeden has a lot of challenges to over come in this book, I loved seeing his growth. All the characters seemed to change and grow, I thought the build of these characters from start to finish was amazing. It was great to see them, sort of grow up. The world build is awesome, details and just the feel of some situations made you feel like you were standing side by side with the characters.

Overall this last book in the series was so well done and as much as I hated the series to end, I loved how it finished. I can't recommend this series enough for all ages. I am really looking forward to seeing what Robert Beatty has in store for us next.

Thanks Disney for sending these free products for me to review. All opinions are my own.

Thanks for stopping by to check out my review.

Have a great day and Happy Reading!

I mainly read westerns and by different authors. I especially like the ones where the author describes the surroundings, such as rivers, streams, plants, hills, and the wildlife , with a good knowledge of these things. The best authors study maps, history books, and even visit the places they write about. This is what Robert Beatty must have done. I read the other Serafina books and they were very enjoyable reading but this one is the best. I did not want to put the book down as it has many twists and turns. Anyone of any age will feel the same after only the first page.
I am 78 and have spent a lot of time in the outdoors. I have trained hawks, falcons and have had crows as pets. I have hunted most all of the game species described in this book, even the timberdoodle or Woodcock and Robert Beatty describes them all to a tee.
In my travels as a Wildlife Officer and a Hunter Education officer i talked to people who had seen a black Panther and heard stories about sightings, mainly in North Florida,Georgia, and North Carolina. But no one had seen a dead one. The wildlife biologists say there is no such animal in the United States but occasionally sightings ard still talked about. Maybee SERAFINA is still roaming the wilderness.

States. Brown ones but no black ones. But occasional sightings are still talked about. Maybe SERAFINA is still roaming the wild places.

A thrilling conclusion to an epic historical fantasy series! Serafina and the Splintered Heart is the perfect ending to a series that's brimming with adventure, unforgettable characters, magic, and friendship.
.............

What an fantastic ending! This is a series I would have devoured as a kid. I've always loved the fantasy element of stories, mixed with historical references, magic, adventure and friendship. This series has all that and so much more. While we have to say good bye to Serafina and Braeden for now, I'm looking forward to seeing more of them in the next adventures that take place in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

This is an excellent story!!! It is beyond anything he has done in the series so far! And I'm very pleased with the book! I went to the book signing and met him and his family,...they are very nice and have excellent senses of humor...well done Robert Beaty!!!! It's requested by the author for us not to revel the secrets of the book even in the spoiler alert! But let me say the beginning shocked me and I have to say it was beyond anything I could have imagined at first! And then near chapter 20 I cried, I cried for Braden's kindness and his Gentle heart! And the longing of Serifena's heart!
And then when we find out exactly how Serfenia ends up the way she does....through the vision of the sorceress...I cried again it made me so sad...the emotion was raw and real!!!! Now I've been talking about crying but I have laughed a lot too I'm not kidding this book is very funny as well! I loved this book so much! So everyone please read, rate and review!! I'm telling you reading this book will impact your life! This is not just a middle school novel it's a life's journey I promise no matter how old you are you will enjoy this beyond your wildest dreams!!! My favorite quotes: "where are you going now, silly boy?" "Stay Bold, cat."
Remember: STAY BOLD!
