Loving You with Teeth and Claws

Rate this book
Twenty-two-year-old alpha wolf, Isa McGowan, is busy. While most people her age are finishing college and starting their careers, Isa’s raising four pre-teens and running a restaurant. She doesn’t have time for dating and she especially doesn’t have time for the lunatic standing on her porch claiming to be her betrothed…no matter how pretty he is.

Wren Davies has a dangerous problem and Isa is his solution. When he arrives in Belle Haven to explain his plight, the last thing he expects is a punch to the face…but that’s exactly what he gets. Instead of finding a politically savvy alpha with a large wolf pack, he finds a barely five-foot spitfire with a mess of kids, a mean right cross and a million excuses why she’ll never honor their betrothal.

Now Wren has two problems…

Oh so many editing problems...
What should've been easily a five star book is reduced to three because of the numerous typos, grammatical and some downright appalling errors.

Aside from this, I enjoyed getting to witness Isa and Wren's beginning, and get more of the story of before Ember came to live with them. I'd like to see the tale go even further back to when Isa was sixteen and her guardianship began.
I really like this series and look forward to more.

This is the first book by Martina McAtee that I’ve read and it is totally outside of my usual genres. I was just so drawn in by the unusual covers of her books. She won the 2016 Reader’s Favorite Gold Medal for her first book, Children Shouldn’t play with Dead Things. This book, Loving You with Teeth and Claws, is a prequel to the series. Martina McAttee’s books are Young Adult and Paranormal with a bit of Romance to keep things simmering. I loved this book and can’t wait to read Book 1, Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things.

This story starts with Neoma, a young girl who is being chased by Dylan (a wolf shifter). She hides from him but he can smell her. She is so scared of him but she can’t remember why exactly. She just knows that if he finds her, he will take her to the woman again and they will hurt her. She finds a place and tries to make herself very small. He finds her though, he always does, and in her frightened state she feels power coming up to her from the ground and then Dylan is dead. At least she thinks he is. She runs to the woods and runs into Wren. She was so relieved because Dylan had told her that Wren was dead and couldn’t save her.

Wren doesn’t know what has been going on but he knows something isn’t right. He left Neoma with his family to look out for her but they let someone hurt her. He took Neoma and ran. They had to get as far away from there as they could before his dad found out they were gone. They go to an old witch who tells him that someone has been hurting Neoma but he can’t see the scars because she has been glamoured. There were also many other spells on her, some blocking her memory. The witch showed Wren a glimpse of what Neoma really looked like and it was awful. He couldn’t believe someone would do such a think to such a sweet little girl. Then the witch suddenly told him the little girl has a passenger and is attacked by someone Wren can’t see. The witch told him to get out of there and go to a town that is hidden by magic to see his betrothed. He grabs Neoma and runs thinking maybe this person and her pack can help protect them from his father who desperately wants Neoma back. Wren doesn’t understand why his father wants Neoma so badly but he plans to do whatever it takes to protect her. Meanwhile, Alpha wolf, Isa McGowan, is trying to get four pre-teens out the door for school so she can get to work on time. She is only 22 but can’t live her life like she would like to. She has to care for these kids and run a restaurant to stay afloat. Her pack isn’t what it used to be but she is doing all she can. She also has no idea of the mess that is heading her way.

Loving You with Teeth and Claws is the Prequel to Martina McAtee’s Dead Things series. Loving You with Teeth and Claws begins with us meeting little Neoma. She’s hiding from someone…Dylan, Wren’s brother. Dylan has come for her yet again to take her blood but this time something inside her snaps and she fights back. She doesn’t mean to do what she does but she’s had enough. Wren isn’t there to protect her despite how much she needs him so she does what she must. But soon after Wren appears and she tells him the ugly truth, she killed Dylan, now they are on the run. Wren heads to Belle Haven in the hopes that the alpha of the pack that lives there will honor an old betrothal agreement and he be able to marry the alpha so that the pack can protect him and Neoma. He doesn’t expect to find the pack little more than Isa, her brother, a reaper and his twin sister and a human. But things aren’t all bad…Isa is Wren’s bond mate and they both can sense it. However, Isa is not about to relinquish her role as Alpha so she resists the pull she feels toward Wren. Danger is hunting Neoma and spells are keeping her from the truth but they are breaking down and her memory is returning. They must learn the truth as to what it is that they are facing or it will destroy them once the spells have completely broken down.
Loving You with Teeth and Claws is the first book that I have read by Martina McAtee and I have to say that I absolutely loved this book. Right from the beginning you hit the ground running with little Neoma. She just wants Dylan to leave her alone but he won’t do it. She so desperately wants Wren to come back from the military because she knows that he is the only one who can protect her. The story shifts between various characters. You get to read the story through Wren, Isa, Neoma and Rhys. The dynamics between each character builds the story up and adds so much to it. We read as Rhys struggles with his wolf and finding his place in his pack. Isa works to balance out her life of raising the kids, running the restaurant and taking care of the town. Wren is looking for protection for himself and Neoma but what he doesn’t expect to find is love. This story has danger throughout and it is really a gripping read.
There really isn’t much that I don’t like about this book. Other than some errors that pop up about three-quarters of the way through the book it’s a great read. It grabs your attention and has you turning page after page wanting to know more. You want to learn more about Neoma – who she is, what she really is and what her powers are. You want to learn the danger that stalks her and threatens to destroy them all.
I cannot wait to read the rest of the books in this series and learn more about the characters and how they continue to grow and develop. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I absolutely loved this book and despite the few errors I came across I think that it is truly a great read and one that I will be recommending.

I so loved reading this prequel novella! I like how we got a glimpse of what the life of the Bella Dona pack back when Ember hasn't join in yet. I like the character development in this book, more especially Rhys' for we get to see his ways of dealing with his inner wolf and puberty. OMG Kai and Rhys, funny how everyone knows their ship is about to sail even though they're too young to understand it. I like seeing the kida;Kai, Quinn, Tristin and Rhys, go on their puberty and identity realization stage. I keep on picturing them as such cute anime chibis. Also, Neoma, she's always such a mystery of a character for me, I like how the author showed us more of her history even though there are such painful parts.

giphy1

Another thing was that me being in love and swoony with the relationship development of Wren and Isa. Like, my gosh, these two. I like how they yielded with each other and how they slowly get a grasp of their feels first as a human and not let the wolves inside them take over. There's just some bonus that these two got and its hot and sexy.

I won't be saying much about the book, aside from the fact that it's awesomeness overload, cause I don't want to spoil the fun for those who hasn't read the book yet. So no, go grab yourselves a copy and start reading!

It wasn’t very short and wasn’t unnecessarily long. It patches up the loopholes in the main series but makes sure that the events/secrets from the two timelines don’t clash (which can be tricky because the readers might have read the main series first). It gives a fantastic insight on characters’ younger personalities while setting it apart from their older selves, thus giving me a realistic or relatable feel. Because people- especially kids- change.

Loving You With Teeth and Claws is a book that doesn’t focus on just one genre. It has equal amounts of romance, paranormal, suspense, drama and depth. Even though the story flows smoothly back and forth between romance and paranormal, you must be naive to expect that it won’t have major plot twists because that’s just Martina’s style.

There were heartbreaking moments in the book where you’re being told what actually happened with Neoma that were so unexpected and… spooky.
And the only thing I think could’ve been added in the book was Neoma’s thoughts and her feelings on everything that happened- regarding her now being safe or hunted or ‘protected’. Basically, her well being both emotionally and physically. I needed more clarification on this for my own peace of mind.

I loved how Wren and Isa’s chemistry developed! Even though it was in a painfully short time frame, there was trepidation, witty foreplay and too much hotness to resist BUT there was also questioning their ‘wolf’ instincts and not just giving everything in. You gotta hand it to the author who made it work because it was nothing short of sorcery.

In short, if you ever feel like reading something that has an intense, bold and dramatic female alpha going head to head with sarcastic tweens and standing up to ‘Partri-carchy‘ (you’ll get it when you read it) by being a total badass and yet want the book to be short *snort* and sweet with a decent sprinkle of smut, look no further.

When I got my copy of LYWTAC, I’m not going to lie. My fangirl mode was activated and I was giddy. I was unable to do anything but think about this book. I’m a fan of the Dead Things Series and this prequel has been anticipated for months!! It did not disappoint!

While this is a prequel to Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things, it can be read on its own. WARNING: Once you read it, you will want to read the other books in the series…you’ve been warned. (You can also check out my reviews for them here and here)

This book has it all. Snark, a smart heroine, heated encounters, mythology, witches, shifters, fae, reapers, and banshees all come together to create a well-written and addictive novel. The writing is smart and I never lost interest. In fact, I didn’t put it down and read the ENTIRE book in a day and trust me, it’s a big one.

I am happily giving this book 5 out of 5 Stars and I’m going to rock back and forth crazily until my addiction is fed with a third Dead Things novel. I should also note that while the series is YA, this book is Adult Romance, with some smolder but no graphic depictions of intimacy, so I would personally deem it appropriate for older teens. (Disclaimer: My opinion solely, not based on ANY professional recommendations blah blah blah)

I especially loved this book because it’s an origin story of involving everyone’s favorite blended family. I love how the author depicts the struggles of raising a family, sure, it’s a blended supernatural family of orphans and a college-aged alpha wolf trying to raise them, but it works and it’s beautiful. Everyone has a past and everyone makes mistakes, and everyone has to learn how to deal. I can’t say enough about this book, or the series in general.

Absolutely couldn't get enough of this prequel! I was a little hesitant going into it because to be honest, I thought the book was mostly focused on Isa and Wren and they weren't my favorites from Books 1 and 2. Not saying I didn't like them, but I am a huge Rhys, Kai, and Ember fan. I am so happy I was wrong! I have a much different perspective of Isa and Wren after reading this book. I can't express how much I loved reading about how they met and their whirlwind romance. I also loved learning more about the Belladonna pack, Oggie, and about the mysterious, ethereal Neoma!! So many things make more sense now, I am so glad Martina focused on this book before Book 3. I am going to go reread Books 1 and 2 because I bet its going to be even better this time around :)

I highly recommend this series to anyone who wants to find a favorite author, a new favorite couple, or who just wants to read about kickass characters who go up against some powerful supernatural creatures/beings. Without giving anything away for those who haven't read Books 1 and 2 yet, my favorite moments in Books 1 and 2 are THAT much more special now that I have seen where the characters came from/what lead to those moments.

Somehow, in my obsession with the Dead Things Series, I missed reading the prequel and oh, how I’ve been missing out!

In Loving You With Teeth and Claws, Martina McAtee gives us the back story on the Bella Donna pack and she does not disappoint!

We meet a young Isa - alpha of the pack, trying to raise 3 (but really 4) tweens on her own, although she is barely an adult. She struggles to live up to the memory of her mother as the alpha. Along comes Wren, her betrothed with a child in tow.

Norma’s story broke my heart... the pain she must have suffered at the hands of those who were supposed to care for her... yet, she always faced everything with a quiet grace and incredible courage!

Rhys, always my favorite, struggling to come to terms with his pubescent human side and wolf side and try to find a way to leave in peace with his wolf and find his place in the pack, reached out and grabbed my heart once again!

Read this book! Read the entire series! You will find yourself sucked into a world you could not begin to imagine and you will not want to leave!

I loved the insight to the early years of Wren and Isa and learning how our little pack of misfits came to be. This prequel tied up really nicely with the series and keeps the reader intrigued. My heart was breaking along the storyline and yet it was soaring at the same time.
*This can be read before the series or at any point, you wont be confused either way but I recommend reading it first to understand the pack
'"What do you mean play outside? It's hot out there, and when it's hot, there are mosquitoes, and mosquitoes have malaria, and I am not going outside in the dark and get malaria just so you can make dinner, and I'm pretty sure Isa isn't going to marry you if you give her kids a fatal disease."
Rhys rolled his eyes as Quinn and Kai bobbed their heads in agreement. They were such babies.
Wren grinned. "Isa told you I'm here to marry her?"'

Heartwrenchingly good

Like her other books Martina drags you willingly into her stories right from the first line. This book is no different.
If you have read her other books, then this one answers some questions that came up in them. If you are starting here.....well done, this is a great beginning to a wonderful relationship that will only get deeper the more you read.
Martina gives us a story filled with heartache, love, anger and acceptance. Her signature style comes through with in depth characters and story lines that have you turning page after page.
I fell in love with characters all over again and gained new insight to others I knew little about.
Now I'm going to push harder for book 3, I cannot wait!!!!!

Loving you with teeth and claws

So freaking good!! I loved reading Is a and Wren's back story. Oh, and Rhys, my heart just shattered into a million pieces for him. I remember what it was like to be the odd ball, the freak (that's Queen of the Freaks, thank you very much). I just wanted to hug him close and tell him everything would be alright. The story is phenomenal. I love these characters so much. I love that McAtee has each character to tell a portion of the story. It can get confusing when you have multiple narrators but McAtee does it seamlessly. There is no break in the flow of the story. The writing is spectacular. I, for one, can't wait to find out what happens next.

Holly hell, this story is intense!!! As much as I wanted to know how Isa and Wern came to be, Neoma's story surprised me more than anything. When I met Neoma and Wern in book 1, all you know is what was going on inside that story. Loving You with Teeth and Claws tells all. Now I know their story and am over the moon! You will never see Wern and Neoma the same agine. Not in a bad way either... The author did an amazing thing when she decided to do this prequel and filled in a lot of gaps that I'm sure not only me had while reading book 1 and book 2. If have read book 1 and 2, or even if you haven't... this is a must read!

Martina is the dark queen of paranormal goodness

I have been dying to know more about Isa & Wren: their history, their relationship and how they met and this book met all my expectations and then more! Isa is a hard working young women who has to keep her family afloat all while being the alpha of her pack at 22. Wren is running. Running from his awful father, running from his brothers death and running with the little girl who warms his heart, Neoma. He is running to Isa for help, but he doesn't expect to fall for her. This book was amazing! I learned so much more backstory on my favorite characters and it's made me want to reread the series again! I highly recommend this book!

Loving You with Teeth and Claws Review

Loved it! This was a perfect prequel to the Dead Things series.
We got to go back in time to see how Wren , Isa , and their crazy pack of misfits came to be. It was especially interesting to find out Neoma's history.

I very much look forward to the next book in the Dead Things series but I also hope we get more chances to go back in time again. I would love to see more adventures of the baby pack before present day.
In my opinion Loving You with Teeth and Claws is definitely recommended.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve already read the first two books in this series or if you start off with this one. It’s an amazing story either way. I loved to find out more about how Wren and Isa became the strong leaders of the Belladonna pack, and I am absolutely thrilled to finally know more about Neoma. Who would have known that there's a dark side to this sweet little girl? All I want in a book I found in this one and I can’t wait for book #3.

This was an excellent prequel to my favorite series. I got to know so much more about the characters that I love so dearly. So many questions that I had from the series got answered in this book. I adored getting to see how Isa and Wren got together and oh my God was that hot! I also loved little fetal Rhys, Tristian, Kai, Quinn and Neoma, they were so cute and still managed to get into trouble.

This book made me so much more excited for the next book in the series to come out.

Wow!

I do believe Martina is NY new favorite author! I've never read anything that even compares to the style she writes! I love her humor and I feel more when I read her books.

This book is the story of how Isa met Wren and Neoma. The story of Wren and Neoma. I've never cried reading a book, until this book. I felt the raw emotion, the joy and the pain. The fear and anger from the characters. I'm so glad we are able to hear these stories of our beloved characters!

I absolutely adore this series and was so excited to get my hands on the prequel. Where it basically all started and the Belladonna pack kicked some butt. Love each of the characters in this book and how we see them work together and start feeling like a pack. Isa and Wren are a perfect match. I liked knowing more about each history and more about Neoma. The writing flows smoothly between each characters POVs and gives us excellent insight. Excited for more!

I read this prequel to the dead things series as part of the Venom and Vampires collection, which I am told is a bit steamier than this version. I am a huge fan of the Dead Things series, and I love how eye opening this book is to the rest of the series. There is a lot of information about Neuma and her history in this book. There is plenty of mystery and adventure along with some horror. Once I picked it up I did not want to put it down!

Loved this addition

This is a book that gives us a little backstory to some of our characters in book one. I do recommend reading this one first so you have that info but it isn’t necessary. It’s also a great length and not short at all. It does alternate between characters but it does it in a way where you get more of a bigger picture than you would reading from just one characters POV.

Prequel Justice

Prequels have a lot to live up to, especially when you have read all the others in the series, but Martina did a great job taking a step back in time, allowing the characters to show a younger version of themselves that wasn't childish or something forced. Great job! Must read for a #cspwdt fan

Nothing says love at first sight like a punch to the face. 😂😂 Do not start this before bed, I mean it, I just planned to read a little of chapter one but got sucked in and the next thing I knew it was after midnight. I just had to know what happened next and every chapter just drew me in further. So...a very good book, a sleep killer but very good.

I love supernatural characters and this story definitely has them from werewolves to banshees. I recommend for all the supe readers out there! Well done, Martina!

💋 Outstanding book💋
This Author was new to me so I had no expectations. I can now count my self among her fans. Cause frankly this story is so very well created in every aspect, including a awesome story with absolutely fascinating vivid characters. It's Unique, inventive, surprising and hot enough to melt away any chill a frozen reader might have felt before.
