Hiroya Oku (奥浩哉 Oku Hiroya, born September 16, 1967 in Fukuoka, Fukuoka) is a mangaka who is the creator of Gantz, Zero-One and HEN, all of which have been serialized in Young Jump. He has finished working on his most renowned manga, Gantz, which began in July 2000. His manga often contain explicit violence and gore, as well as sexual situations.
He won the second prize of the Youth Manga Awards in 1988, under the penname Yahiro Kuon.
He designed a character for Namco Bandai's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 fighting game, Soulcalibur IV named Shura.
So that is how kei will lose all his points? I knew something like this would happen gantz can't just let them get away from it. But i have been having this idea for a while, i think kato got his 100 points and is incarnated in the real world with his memories of gantz lost, like what happened with izumi before, i also think someone should kill izumi the guy is terrible.
So Kei is trying to figure out what he wants. He met a new woman on his last hunt named Reika who is a famous Celebrity. She has a huge crush on him and asks him to go on a date of sorts. When the news breaks out from people taking pictures his current girlfriend Tae gets upset and pissed. Then Kei trying to figure out what to do to make it better but gets sucked into another hunt. However, there's a second hunt after the first and this time the target is...TAE!!!!
Good: This amps up the drama but it works really well. It gives us a more mature, more conflicted Kei, and that's always nice. The fights work well and they feel like a team now wiping out these monsters like they should. The ending is nail biting and betrayal from all sides keep this one interesting and by the end you want more.
Bad: Kei is still a dumbass at times and his choices of what he does with his current relationship is so...weird.
Overall this is great. The fights are interesting, the drama is well done, and the ending sets up some great new ideas. A overall blast of a volume. 4 out of 5.
Gantz, in bird culture this is considered a dick move.
This volume hurts me. Things are getting complicated with Tae in the picture. I hate Izumi a lot but I need his background story on how he managed to get 100 points the first time (was it his first though) ASAP.
The first half of this volume focused on the lame and awkward relationship tangle between Kei and Reika and Tae, but then I guess it makes sense for it to be awkward since they are high school kids. The battle against the next set of aliens went very quickly, and seemed perfunctory, but then it was really just a set up for Gantz's next surprise, which I didn't actually see coming. So now the participants have been set against each other, and things are getting interesting again.
Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.
Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.
Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.
The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.
Volume 15: Chapter 167-178 Phase 1: Missions Arc 6: Ring Alien Mission Arc 7: Kill Tae Kojima Mission
Izumi killed the last of the vampires. Reika falls in love with Kurono. Then, there's a storm in Kurono and Tae's relationship.
New mission started. They need to kill a group of ring aliens (horse-knight-looking alien). At the same time, Tae was there. Accidently, Tae took a picture of one of the Gantz's member. (In Gantz's world, normal people can't see Gantz's member due to difference in frequency). After the mission ended, comes new mission. They need to kill Tae as Tae know the Gantz's secret.
Kurono saves Tae. At the same time, the Gantz's team split into the faction; the one who side with Kurono and the one who oppose Kurono.
In Gantz/15, life gets complicated. Kei Kurono gives into some temptation, the group gets fragmented during a mission and one of the group becomes the target. Gantz is where a few people after death appear in a room with a large black ball and are sent on mission to kill things. Initially they faced aliens, then dinosaurs and then vampires. Between the missions, they return to their normals lives. It's a crazy tale but it is pretty interesting.
Ok, somehow, the author felt like this kind of series needs a love triangle and all the drama that comes with it. It sort of works, I guess, as it's your typical misunderstanding kind of thing. I guess something's supposed to come out of this later. Not a particularly interesting volume. There's a big twist comes towards the end though. Gantz is apparently not some sort of artificial intelligence but there's an actual intelligence behind it, one that's rather sadistic.
I was so wrong for thinking it couldn't get better. At first I was like actually sad and worried for the slice-of-life bit were as usual Kurono made a dumbass choice that of course ended up not working well. But when the night continued—this is such a good story damn.
Kurono si vybírá mezi dvěma holkama... neudělal by nejlíp, kdyby prostě sám umřel a holky by měly klid?
how the story develops so far gives me anxiety jesus christ i thought their targets were just aliens then there are vampires and suddenly they're targetting humans now?!
