John Barrowman was born in Scotland, and moved to Illinois when he was eight years old. He is bi-dialectal, doing much of his stage and acting work in his American accent, but speaking with family in his Scottish accent.

He moved back to Britain in 1989 when he was hired to play the lead in Anything Goes. He took on a number of West End roles, including the leads in Sunset Boulevard and Miss Saigon and a dramatic play entitled Rope, while working as a children's television presenter and came back to America briefly to work on short lived shows such as Central Park West and Titans. He then bounced around Broadway, West End and the LA Stage for a number of years before moving back to Britain permanently. He won the role of Captain Jack Harkness in the new Doctor Who series and went on to star as Captain Jack in its adult spin-off Torchwood.

John married Scott Gill, his partner of fifteen years, in December 2006.

A bit disjointed, and it was hard to figure out exactly what was going on. But it's Torchwood and John Barrowman and Doctor Who references and some clever little quips, so who I am kidding - I will probably keep reading.

This is a follow on to the novel the authors wrote. I have not read that yet, so the introduction of the ice ship and its crew was a surprise. This meant it was a tad confusing to begin with. Other than that it was very action packed, and is obviously building towards something.

A good read.

In fairness, this story is better than three stars, but it's also pretty clearly a continuation from the book Torchwood: Exodus, (which I had not read at the time that I started this, unfortunately. As a result, I was pretty lost, being thrown into the deep end. There were some transitional things done that were very cinematic and cool, and some editing things are done that were not so cool. I reserve the right to change my rating once I have consumed that media. For a more detailed review, visit www.travelingthevortex.com (episode #374)

Unfortunately I haven't read the Torchwood novel Exodus Code, which I think this is a loose sequel to; lots of fun stuff happens, including Captain John Hart (as portrayed by James "Spike" Marsters) taking over the original Victorian-era Torchwood estate, and some gorgeous art with some nice nods to the show (and one or two nods to Doctor Who). But it's only the first part of an ongoing narrative, and who knows when I'll get another chance to visit Forbidden Planet...

To be honest, I think I'm just giving this three stars because I miss the TV series so darned much. The beginning was confusing, especially since this graphic novel includes a character who never appeared in the TV series but did appear in a novelization I've never read.

The scene jumps all over the place - I really mean ALL over the place. That made it exasperating trying to figure out how the parallel plots in these different settings would ultimately fit together. And as for the ending - well, there isn't one. The story continues in the next graphic novel. Hopefully by then, the parallel plots will come together and make one coherent story.

But I'm not holding my breath.

Wow - I felt so lost the entire time I was reading this. I felt like I need a “previously on...” before getting in the thick of it with all the new Torchwood characters helping Jack. It was cool to finally see Torchwood 2 but this story was a hot mess, in my opinion. It was difficult to get settled into a story before the scene would suddenly change with sassy subtitles and then a few panels and change again with more parenthetical citations and etc etc. Maybe if you’ve been following Torchwood comics this story makes more sense - but it was just too much going on.

Not all that much happens in Torchwood: World Without End, but I was still a bit confused at parts. There is a submarine and an old guy gets shot and a wife who does not have the best of intentions and a loyal butler. All good things, to be sure, but the story tries way too hard to be cute and quippy without achieving either. It would have felt better to focus on a cohesive plot.

Pretty meh.

The much longed for new Torchwood adventure comic! Set in present time, after Miracle Day. John and Carole Barrowman start their new Torchwood comic series from where we left Torchwood after Exodus Code. We meet the new Torchwood hub, The Ice Maiden and its crew, led by Captain Jack Harkness. A series of seemingly unconnected events and mysterious alien attacks brings the team and Gwen into action. Something big is threatening earth. For me it is a pleasure to read this new adventure - it is mysterious, and we are introduced to some great new characters, while loved well-known ones are back - and also some old enemies, like Captain John Hart, ally with new ones to cause mayhem for planet Earth. I just wish the issues were bigger, so that Titan would give the authors more room to let us get to know the new characters better and give this story more room to unfold!
Yet there is good action and the typical Torchwood humour brought by the authors John Barrowman and Carole Barrowman. A good and gripping story, completed by great artwork. And as it is continued into "Station Zero" I found it not a problem that it had this cliffhanger ending.

If you want to read this you better read Exodus Code first - which is worth it anyway! The story of World Without End jumps around a lot, so sometimes it's a bit hard to follow, but I think if you concentrate it works well. The story is intriguing and I just love the Ice Maiden. Actually more than I did in Exodus code. I'm just a bit confused - since when is the vortex manipulator working this properly again? It shouldn't... but I think I can live with that.
The drawings are fine, you always know who is who. And I love the little quips and easter eggs throughout. I think it's very easy to see that Carole and John had a lot of fun creating this story.

TORCHWOOD. Volume 1 - World Without End.

Enjoyable journey to a world in which the Doctor is probably somewhere!

#1-
"Mary Shelley" is the name of Torchwood's A.I.'s avatar on the 'Ice Maiden' ship
.
#2-
Narrative: "In a galaxy too close for comfort.."
.
#3-
"What's a chameleon circuit?"
"Just as the name implies. It makes it possible for the Ice Maiden to alter its appearance and shape. And, with a little help from THIS, we can also move through time and relative dimensions in space."
.
#4
"Are you SEEING this?"
"I'm seeing it."

I assume this is a sequel to the final Torchwood novel Exodus Code, because I have little idea of what was going on. The art looked alright, but there was a jarring effect where too much happened in between panels, that the panels themselves seemed disjointed. Like many others on this website, I'm really just reading this because of the Torchwood name. Honestly, just listen to Big Finish's Torchwood range or read one of the novels, its a much better representation and continuation of Torchwood then this. Saying that though, I will read the next two volumes.

This Torchwood comic throws you straight in the deep end, and it's quite similar to A Good Man Goes To War in that respect. It's a brilliant action-packed caper, where the characters are mostly already in the middle of the action. It can make the story feel a little confusing, as there's so much going on, but it feels exactly like a big budget Torchwood continuation after Miracle Day, especially with the Ice Maiden ship, which has a working chameleon circuit.

Nice artwork inside and really got characters personalities from the original series down (Probably because John is one of the writers).
Confusing story but I suppose it reveals more in volume 2. This story didn’t loose me completely so that’s a plus it kept me engaged even if I was like huh? most of the time but yeah can’t wait to get vol 2 to see how the story develops.

What can I say, I am biased, but this was still a great read. I felt it was well written and put together. I look forward to more of the same. An excellent choice for any Doctor Who, Torchwood or John Barrowman fan.

Solid story from the Barrowman siblings borrowing details from the history of Torchwood right back to its very beginnings with the inclusion of Scotlands Torchwood House in the tale.

it’s enjoyable but really all over the place. Quite disjointed and hard to follow but i wouldn’t say that stopped me enjoying it. Was seemingly as fast paced as any episode of torchwood would be.

I miss Torchwood SO much 😭 This book was a nice escape back into the world, still sad that the new team only has 2 original members...but I get it. Everyone in their line of work dies young 😔

As much as I enjoyed this book (and hated the cliffhanger ending) I did find myself getting a little confused by all the jumps from one place to another. Overall, however, it was Torchwood with Captain Jack, Captain John and Gwen Cooper so of course, it was great :)

This was the weirdest ending because it didn't end. I was shocked to find on the last page of issue 4 that it would be continued in a new storyline, because this storyline wasn't finished. It wasn't just a cliffhanger, not a thing was wrapped up or revealed. And four issues is really short for a storyline anyway. They're usually at least five issues before getting a trade paperback.

Throughout the issues, the writing was jumpy and disjointed. I kept feeling like I had missed panels or stuck pages together. From one panel to the next, people and places would jump around. Action would be cut short in jarring ways to go to the story in another location, and it was not done skillfully. I really feel like the story is going somewhere and will be interesting, but I'm not loving the execution. Maybe everything will be made clear and work in the next storyline now that so much exposition is out of the way.
