Growing up in Birmingham, Pippa James was never without at least one book on the go and therefore lived several different lives concurrently. As an adult, she would like to spend much of her time the same way, but she now lives a chaotic life in a small Derbyshire town with her husband and two children. Her writing is frequently interrupted by parenting duties and her day job as a teacher and the only way she can find a quiet space to think, is by taking her laptop to the pub to drink tea and write, which she does at every opportunity.

They say “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, but when it comes to The Secret of Lucy Lovecake, you should.
Why?
Because the story of this novel is exactly like the cover – girly and cute.

However, when it comes to synopsis, in this particular case, the story does not follow it in a way one would expect. Everything that’s being said is true, but there’s also a big part of the story that hasn’t been mentioned.
This is a story that talks about love interest and Daisy keeping secret from her lover, but it also talks about aspiring author on her way to become a published one, and her life after having a best-seller.

I really appreciated that aspect of the story, because it showed what publishing a book looks like, and in a way it made me learn something I didn’t know before.
I think mentioning it in synopsis wouldn’t hurt.

The story is written in first person, following Daisy’s POV.
Daisy’s voice is quirky and is really easy to read.
With really short chapters (84 in total) the book reads pretty quickly, and it is very likely that faster readers will finish it in one sitting.

On a quick note, I think the story would have been better without first four chapters (in those chapters we got to see Daisy’s life now when her book is bestseller, and then we go back into the past and follow the story from the beginning).

I liked characters in this story.
The one that stands out the most was Michel Amiel, who is also Daisy’s love interest.
I know it is stated that he is her boyfriend, but I wouldn’t use that word to define him.
He’s very complex and there is so much more then meets the eye when it comes to him. He suffers from depression, self medicates it with alcohol, he is very self centred, grumpy and overall one bitter man.
On the other hand, he can be fun and sweet.

Since this story is told from Daisy perspective, I wish the author (or should I say Daisy) gave us a chance to fall in love with him, or just like him better.
I mean, Daisy likes him, but we don’t see what she likes about him. Almost everytime she talked about him or described scenes with him, there was something problematic about him.
I wish we got to see why she fell for him.
Honestly, I feel like there was more connection between Daisy and Michel’s mother then between the two of them.

The end was very sweet and cute.
I can’t say I was 100% satisfied with the way the story was wrapped up, because it felt like the author decided to turn a blind eye on Michel’s depression (or maybe that is something that will get more attention in the next book).

Overall The Secret Life of Lucy Lovecake is a fun novel that I would highly recommend to chick-lit lovers.

I'm not gonna lie; as soon as I saw the name 'Lucy Lovecake', I just knew that I had to read the book pronto. Can you imagine having the surname 'Lovecake'? I would be Kaisha Lovecake, and damn right, I do LOVE CAKE. It's safe to say that I was rather intrigued, who wouldn't be?

Unfortunately, 'Lucy Lovecake' isn't the main characters real name; she goes by her proper name of Daisy Delaney when she isn't feeling as fruity as 'Lucy'. Having spent a lot of time in the kitchen whipping up mouth-watering delights, Daisy knows that she can bake well, unfortunately not well enough to rival the likes of Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood. By trade, Daisy isn't a baker but she can probably rival Ann Summers on their knowledge of lingerie, what with being a lingerie specialist of course. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Lingerie + baking = ? No, I'm not brave enough to bake in my knickers, but I have a feeling I know who might...

I need to be honest; I did find the first chapter or so, to be a little slow and hard to sink my teeth into. However, after a little bit of stopping and starting the novel, I ensured that I was relaxed and ready for fun before I carried on reading. If you're after a novel that is straight-laced, innocent and lacking in proper 'oooer missus' humour, then this book isn't for you. If you're after a book that is full of double entendres, enough cake to fill a bakery (several times), hilarious (yet cringy) 'omg' moments, as well as plenty of sass and enough spice to spice up your life; then this book IS for you. Once I had tuned myself into the authors humour and way of writing, I flew through the novel and couldn't put it down.

I have NEVER read a book as quirky, fun, mischievous and darn right fabulous as Pippa James' novel is. It's relatable in so many ways; the only difference is, Pippa James' characters are being open about their antics and we're too embarrassed to do so. Daisy Delaney is what I class as a 'gold' character; by that I mean brilliant and definitely one to remember. Daisy oozes confidence in ways a lot of women would be jealous of (I was, I'll admit it), yet her character comes across incredibly down to earth and such fun.

Pippa James has delivered in writing such a unique book which has enough depth and charisma to stand tall above many other books. Even though the main concept of the storyline revolves around baking, lingerie and Daisy Delaney's life; there is more to the characters (and storyline) that meets the eye. It isn't all Victoria sponge cake and padded bras; it's about finding your niche, shoving a cake in your mouth and grabbing your dreams by the suspenders. Going on the Lucy Lovecake journey with Daisy Delaney you'll find yourself looking differently at the eligible bachelors and finding humour that you've been too afraid to make use of; until now.

Such a well written, unique and hilarious read to lose yourself in, go with the flow and indulge in the fantastic person that is, Lucy Lovecake.

Pippa James, I cannot WAIT to see what you come up with next! (I'm rather hoping Lucy Lovecake makes another appearance).

Thank you Black and White Publishing!

That delicious cover is just the icing on the cake for the incredible feel good vibe that fizzes throughout The Secret Life of Lucy Lovecake. Its flirtatious charm tells the tale of the highs, lows and romantic woes of a budding debut author, Daisy Delaney – and what a little cracker of a book this is!

Daisy, a country girl at heart masquerading as a city dweller, has a chance encounter with infamous TV personality and author, French chef Michel Amiel. He leaves a lasting impression on most people – he certainly did on me! This arrogant man-diva is used to getting his own way and does not like competition in any aspect of his life, particularly when it comes to being knocked off his cookery career pedestal.

The idea of any relationship between the two of them seems as appealing as finding a toenail in your soup, yet something inexplicably intriguing lies behind his rudeness, frequent public outbursts, and his insistence to casually bump into vintage lingerie sales assistant and amateur baker, Daisy.

Although she is bursting to squeal about the publishing deal she’s been offered for her contemporary baking/dating book, her has to kerb her enthusiasm. The true identity of the author must be concealed until the social media frenzy for her book, French Fancy by ‘Lucy Lovecake’, has been whisked up.

The mystique actually works as it sees book sales rise higher than the perfect soufflé, while her personal life is becomes more delicate than a crumbling meringue. All the secrecy places a terrific strain on her relationships as unavoidable situations created by Daisy’s manufactured world spill over into reality creating a recipe for disaster. This leads to the quick fire bakery joviality with continual run-ins with the grouchiest chef in town – man-diva is not a happy bunny as this ‘mystery author’ leaves his own efforts trailing some way behind.

Balancing the necessary ingredients for Daisy’s successful book launch dream against the essential ones for maintaining a happy, contented life involves a succession of little white lies (and a few unrehearsed whoppers!). The unwavering constants are her gorgeous choice of outfits for public appearances, her splendid flatmate friends and not forgetting the ever sulking Monsieur Amiel, of course!

The Secret Life of Lucy Lovecake is fresh and radiant and brimming with a wonderful optimism inviting you to devour Daisy’s story in one sitting, which is exactly what I did during the most perfectly escapist afternoon. Embracing opportunities, sharing your good fortune and taking charge of your own destiny are all part of the Lucy Lovecake experience, as are the unexpected learning curves of life and love.

It will leave you beaming from ear to ear!

(I received a copy of this surprising gem of a title from the publisher and Janne Moller with my thanks, for which I am delighted to provide this unbiased review.)

I wanted to like this book more, I really did, and I hate to put such a low classification, but I just can't. I hated the FMC, she was an oppportunist, a fake, rude, a dumb*ss really. One page she's like "I love Michel" and then the very next chapter she's like "He's bad and Dominic is good" and then the very next chapter she's like "Michel I want you". The actual HELL was this? UGHHHHH. I couldn't with her. And I'm not in any way saying that Michel was perfect, he wasn't, he had problems too but she basically played with him, it was so clear to see he loved her but she didn't give a rats *ss about that, it was all about her book and nothing else matter. He did all the effort, like after he discovered that she was Lucy Lovecake, and not because she told him, he was mad at her, which is reasonably, and didn't make any efforts to make him understand, like she went to his house once, she went again because his mother called her and went after his car at the competition and that was it. It passed at least six months and that was all the effort she made, nothing else. If she loved him so much, why not try to make him understand? He was mad but if she tried more and showed she loved him back, things would have been diferent but no, she didn't none of that. And then she was Dominic, and that was so freaking stupid and desperate, in my opinion. He showed her attention and she liked that, and that was it. And were together in a very short period of time of her "breaking up" with Michel. GAH, what a f*cking stupid woman. And at the end, what the hell was that? In the last chapter, out of nowhere, Michel shows up in her house and they get back together in 2 freaking pages. What was that? It was so bad, God. She deserved to be alone for the rest of her life if that's how she treats the people she loves.

Daisy is an ‘all rounder’, writer, baker and sales assistant.

She is also Lucy Lovecake, and her love affair with Michel Amiel and the launch of her new cook book ‘French Fancy’, is what keeps the reader entertained.

Lucy’s rise is quite a strain for Michel, a moody and self-important Frenchman.

Within the pages of this beautiful pink covered delight, is a fun-filled plot that makes you crave cake from the first line, makes you laugh, and it also gives a total escape from the cold winter.

This is a perfect ‘girls read’. It has glamour, romance and is as sweet as the ‘French Fancies’ Lucy concocts.

Pippa James has a certain style. Within these pages is a moral to the story, that with effort and grace, ladies can have it all, independence and freedom, all while maintaining a feminine grace and being loved.

I truly adored this novel, and for me, who doesn’t usually ‘do’ romance and chick-lit, it was a fabulous days read. It left me with a feel-good feeling and a big smile.

Entertaining read. This is the first grown up book from the author, she normally writes childrens books under another name. Wasn't sure I was going to enjoy this when I started the book, but it hooked me in and kept me reading to the end. The main character, Daisy, is well written and captivating and although I felt slightly disappointed by the ending I would happily read another Lucy Lovecake book.

THE SECRET LIFE OF LUCY LOVECAKE by Pippa James is the perfect read for fiction fans everywhere. With scrumptious cakes, sexy lingerie, and characters that feel like your best friends, I completely fell in love with this story! Daisy Delaney has always wanted to be an author and when her first book on the history of lingerie fails to garner any interest, she begins to wonder whether her dream will ever happen. Broke and a little forlorn, it is fate that throws her in the path of antagonistic French chef Michel Amiel. As a strange friendship begins between them, inspiration hits Daisy for the perfect idea for a book, and before she knows it Lucy Lovecake and her baking/dating expertise is born. With Publishers fighting over her, it seems as if her every dream is coming true. But as Lucy Lovecake's real identity must remain a secret, Daisy finds herself lying to those who really matter to her, including Michel, but Daisy doesn't want to risk her book or her future for anyone. With drunken outbursts, house arrests, saucy secrets, and plenty more, THE SECRET LIFE OF LUCY LOVECAKE by Pippa James is hilarious from beginning to end and I adore the area of Primrose Hill and its fascinating inhabitants. I cannot wait to read more from Pippa James.

Easy to read fluff. It feels a bit like all blue skies, things just kept happening coincidentally, and it was written very much and this happened and then that happened. I much preferred the beginning of the book before the deal was signed when she struggled rather than after when it all happened to her. Very bizarre. Also felt it ended very abruptly.

Beach read. No thinking required.
