Though she worried it might never happen, Elissa Blue finally has her wings. Now she has a short window of time to migrate to the Mating Mountain, find a husband, and get back down the impassable cliffs before she loses her ability to fly forever. If she doesn’t succeed, she’ll be stranded as a servant in the Old Castle for the rest of her life. And if she doesn’t choose her man wisely, she might be just as miserable.
T.K. Perry lives with her husband and daughter in a lovely Oregon forest filled with wildlife (there is probably a house, too, but that's less picturesque). When she isn't writing or watching said wildlife, she enjoys making jewelry, pretending to be a photographer, and trying to save the world (a frustrating task since she lacks both superpowers and a costume).
T.K. has a B.A. in International Relations from Brigham Young University, an M.A. in International Politics from the University of Denver Graduate School of International Studies, a J.D. from the University of Denver College of Law, and a LL.M. in Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law from Lewis & Clark Law School. Law is her profession, but writing is a favorite hobby.
A girl grows wings. Now she has a short window of time to get to Mating Mountain, before her wings don't work. If she doesn't find a husband, her life is ruined, and if she finds the wrong husband, her life is ruined. Good luck!
Not bad, perhaps I'm not the target audience here.
Reading Elissa Blue is like watching The Bachelor, only everyone has wings. Initially I thought this was going to be a book about fairies, but it ended up being about human-butterfly hybrids. It's hard to classify this book. It has a bit of a fantasy feel with some dystopian elements that are not all that fleshed out, but it also is a romance with a definite Christian aspect to it as well. The age of the characters make it fit into the new adult age group, but it's completely clean and reads like a young adult novel. The overall theme of the book is, be wise about who you choose to marry and spend your life with.
What I liked about this book the most was that it somehow kept me glued to it despite the fact that I thought the whole human-butterfly hybrid thing was pretty silly, and the main character drove me crazy at times with her wishy-washy indecisiveness. She went back and forth between three guys so many times.
Now about the guys. I think I met and dated a guy exactly like each of them in college. There is the one that you like and is really nice, but are not attracted enough to. The one who is very attentive and takes care of you and is fun to be around. The one who is attractive but rough around the edges, has a good heart, but maybe isn't all that smart. The one that you know is bad for you, but the attraction is strong. I'm not going to spoil who is who here, or which one Elissa ends up with, but I was happy with who she chose.
Things that I thought could have been improved upon were: -The story was a little long. -Too much going around and around in circles with the guys and her feelings about them. -The days felt super long. Two days felt like two weeks to me. -Too insta-love like for me. A couple of days isn't enough time to get to know a person. -The dystopian aspect of the book was underdeveloped.
Things I liked were: -The funny last names based on types of butterflies. Mr. Sootywing and Mr. Hairstreak, :) :). I actually looked up these butterflies to see what they looked like. -The fact that the book kept me glued to it. -Mit and Holis :) -The choice she makes about who she will marry. - The overall theme of the book.
Thanks to the author for giving me a copy of this book for review. Review also posted at Writings of a Reader
Overall Opinion's ◾The plot was essentially wonderful. ◾The writing was grand and exceptionally pleasing to me. ◾The characters were very developed and admirable.
Main Characters 🔳 Cari - I liked her character and I agreed with Elissa when she said Cari acted 'motherly' towards her. I can relate. 🔳 Elissa - I thoroughly enjoyed her character, she was extremely well developed and I felt a connection with her thoughts and emotions. I could relate to her more than any of the others. 🔳 Mit - I always thought he was decent and humorous. Personality aside, I wasn't particularly routing for him to get with Elissa. 🔳 Holis (aka. Bat) - I was your biggest fan! I wanted you to be the one more than anything. 🔳 Tull - Sweet, sweet Tully. You were always so gentle and had a heart of gold. UGH I loved you so much (I didn't exactly want Elissa to pick you but you still held my heart in your precious hands). 🔳 Other guys who weren't particularly a huge deal - I apologize in advance for routing for none of you. Hopefully your ego isn't damaged. *eyeroll* 🔳 All of Elissa's Siblings - I appreciated all of you equally, you were very caring in all in your own specific ways. I found myself aweing at your actions (all of you) 🔳 Elissa's Parents - I salute you both, in the beginning it was rocky for the father part but I found myself loving him in the end (as a father). Pelidne (the mom) reminded me of my own mom, and was very sweet, caring, and you could tell she loved her children dearly.
Main Review I truly loved this book, it melted my heart into a little puddle of happiness and left me content in my surrounding feels. I could relate to so much that happened it was almost unreal. This book was like a safety net for me, in the book world. I knew from page one, I was going to enjoy it. I don't typically fall into the magic of fantasy-contemporary genre, because I personally have never been a huge fan of fantasy. This book was highly well written and I loved every second! I felt a connection with the characters, I laughed quite a bit. It was a little emotional, but the melancholy feels weren't hitting completely home for me. I don't usually appreciate the whole 'daddy issues' thing in books, but this was completely understandable and was settled exceptionally well. This was a constant page turner for me and I was engrossed in the story 100%. I only gave this book 4.5⭐ because the just ending wasn't enough for me. I wanted more! I'm not a huge fan of endings that leave me with tons of unanswered questions. Overall I was in love with this book!
Elissa Blue by T.K. Perry was a very diverse an unique story. T.K. Perry built and extensive and engaging world, inhabited by creatures different from any other I’ve ever read: Butterfly-human hybrids. I believe that she did an excellent job describing her world and these butterfly hybrids, though there were some strange details that I found borderline disturbing. For instance I thought the pheromone was weird.
The story has elements of fantasy and dystopian, but mostly it’s is a romance. Elissa is simply trying to find the right guy. She doesn’t want to make her decision too quickly and thus end up unhappy for the rest of her life, but she also doesn’t have much time to choose because hanging over her is the constant threat of her season ending. Perry keeps you guessing until the end who Elissa will end up with, throwing in new twists every time you think you have it figured out.
I think my favorite characters were Elissa’s extended family. I liked Psyche and her brothers, and even though I started off thinking their dad was a total jerk I ended up liking him too. Elissa herself was somewhat selfish and shallow, and some of the things she did just had me shaking my head and thinking, “Girl…” but she won me over by the end.
Elissa’s long cast of potential love interests were also interesting characters. Well, most of them were. One of her love interests I utterly couldn’t stand. He was a troglodyte, and every time she gushed how perfect he was I would roll my eyes.
On a whole this was a clean, YA/NA romance with a very unique twist. I’m interested in what the next books in this series will be.
I received a copy of this novel for free. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
Human butterflies? Wow, what a fun and interesting idea. I enjoyed this book very much. The cover is beautiful as well, I have to add. This author is very good. A new realm, wonderful characters and just and exciting read. I loved the story and the romance and everything in between. I'm glad this book is a series! * I received this book from the author and this is my honest review*
Author T.K. Perry brings to life a world of romance and winged people (human-butterfly hybrids) in her novel Elissa Blue. This story is filled with a grand adventure and fun characters. It’s about learning about oneself and migrating to Mating Mountain to navigate the tricky period of searching for a mate; a one true love. Strong themes in the story are friendship and love. Although there are some sensitive topics of infidelity, hormones, mating, etc., the author deals with these topics delicately. Perry’s has a unique way of writing that readers of fantasy romance will enjoy.

I had a really hard time with this book. The characters in this book are, for the most part, in their 20's but they were SO immature! They way they acted, the way they spoke- all of it. The whole book revolves around mating and I kept having to tell myself that these were older characters not young teenagers. The other thing I had a hard time with was the "smells". These winged creatures go to a special place to mate and they all have scents. There was a lot of talking about the smells everyone gave off and it just was awful for me. I have a sensitive sniffer and just the idea of all those smells literally turned me off to this book.
I had to give this one 5 stars for several reasons... 1) it kept me up reading much later than I wanted to be awake several nights in a row because I just couldn't put it down. 2) It was a genre/world I don't usually read but it captivated me and left me excited for the next book in the series, and 3) I was in complete awe the whole time I was reading as I said to myself "My friend wrote this!!! Real people write books that I love!! Real people *THAT I KNOW* write books that I love!" It was so fun reading TK Perry's debut novel. I'm just thrilled for her and I'm confident the book and series will be a great success! Lots of well-written characters, exciting conflicts, romance and fun. Oh and giggling. Lots of girly giggling :D Because I'm not so much a fantasy/fairy book reader in general... and because the world in the book was so creative and different than what I'm used to reading, I had to suspend disbelief a bit more than usual, and the timeline of the story was hard for me to wrap my head around. I don't think that's as much a criticism of the book as an admission of my strained ability to just go with the flow of a world I'm unfamiliar with. Other than the whirlwind timeline of the book, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A friend of mine wrote this book so have been excited to read it. I loved it. Until the end I didn't know what was going to happen where in many books you feel they are so predictable. I loved all of the different characters in the book and felt like I could really see who they were. I think this would be a perfect book foe any young teenage girl who loves fairy tales and fantasy books.
I loved this book! The main character was delightfully fiery and all of the characters in the book were likable, even if they had antagonistic qualities. It was an interesting mix of romance and science fiction, and I'd recommend it for anyone. :)
So good in fact that I almost forgot it was fantasy. Well, perhaps that's a stretch. The character development of so many was unusually good. Definitely recommend reading this book.
This was such a fun story. It sucked me in from the very beginning and I couldn't put it down. Great character development and full of wonderful plot twists that kept me in suspense until the very end. Delightful!
The idea behind this book is very intriguing: imagine a world made up entirely of human/butterfly hybrids, with a bit of The Selection madness thrown in. Pretty cool, right? As unique as the concept is, it could have used some more development before going to print. 5 stars for ingenuity, minus 3 for poor development.
The plot meandered hither and yon with no clear direction or message. There was far too much going on, with not enough details to make any of it believable. I'm not totally sure what the point was at times--was the book about Elissa trying to find a husband? Her attempt to grow up? Connect with her family? I'm not sure. I think the message really boiled down to "don't let your hormones/lust drive your relationship decisions." A good message for sure, but I don't think this book was the best way to present that; I was drowning in insta-love, irrational decisions, and love triangles (more like octagons!) in this book, and it drove me crazy. One positive is that the author discouraged premarital sex, and showed some of the consequences it led to. This is very different from mainstream opinion, and I appreciated that the author was willing to go against the grain and present a different view. Another positive was that even though this is marked as a "new adult" book, the author kept the romance(s) fairly clean overall. Nothing explicit here.
It was neat to see how the author included a wide variety of personalities in this book. Again, too many characters led to underdevelopment of nearly all of them, though there were a few that really stood out. Psyche and Holis were fun to read about, though they were supposed to be the "bad" characters. If the author had chosen just one or two of the relationships in this book to flesh out and devote more time to, and dropped most of the others, that would have made a huge difference. One note: I feel like Elissa and Cari switched personalities about a quarter way through the book, and it took me a bit to get settled with the characters again.
The setting was supposed to be more dystopian than fantasy, but we didn't get to learn a whole lot about the world the book was set in. All we know is a flood caused it to be populated by only human/butterfly hybrids, and some animals. There was a hint of religious persecution, though it wasn't clear what religion was being persecuted, or if the persecution had recently ended. The characters prayed twice, maybe three times in the entire book, and it wasn't clear how deeply felt their faith was, or who they were praying to. It felt thrown in to me, and not authentic for the characters. Overall, I'm not sure whether the world-building was good or bad; there was so little of it, I can't really say either way.
One last comment: I was actually grossed out by some of the stuff in this book: wing birth, pheromone stuff, etc. I get that the author wanted to bring in some authenticity to the human/butterfly crossover, but all the details were kinda disturbing at times.
The gist of my review is this: great idea, ruined by poor development. This book had so much potential; it's disappointing to see the author didn't follow through with it. I'm hoping that following books will be better developed, but I can't say for sure.

This is a delightful easy-to-read fantasy that will delight the young romantic. The plot is unique and the characters interesting. I suspect we will see more from this author. I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for an honest review.
In a world where humans now have wings which sprout in your teens, Elissa is eager to get hers. An interesting premise with good characters. I would recommend it to YA and fantasy readers.
Delightful! Elissa became a quick friend and I felt like we were on her journey together. It was funny, touching and emotional. Very well written. I loved it!
I was so excited to read this book, and in no way did it disappointing!! I was absolutely entranced from start to finish. You know when you're reading a book, but are forced to put it down to tend to everyday needs, and you can't wait to get back to it?! This book is one of those!! Highly recommend! I can't wait for the next one!
This book was a bit of a departure for me in the YA I do read. It leans a little more toward fantasy than I normally like. Yet, following Elissa through her journey to womanhood and finding love was enjoyable, nonetheless. Fair warning, there is a lot happening in this one, especially once Elissa makes it to what the kids have dubbed Mating Mountain. Once there, Elissa discovers family she didn’t know about previously and must sort through her hormones to discover her heart’s desire. In truth, she seemed flighty (pun intended) to me when it came to guys—not able to settle on one person. Instead, she’s continually convinced the one she is with is her perfect mate. That aspect of her personality is juxtaposed against her loyalty to the family and friends she meets and makes along the way. She visits them, encourages them, and sympathizes with them when they’re hurting. I had a pretty good guess at who Elissa’s “one” is throughout, but Perry kept planting small seeds of doubt at points. This story does deal with some more mature topics such as infidelity, mating, marriage, hormones and a vague allusion ot rape. Each of those is handled delicately in the fantasy setting which adds a layer of cushion when necessary.

I really enjoyed this book. It was fun and lighthearted, that also had you eager for more. You never knew what was going to happen or what wpuld cone out of Elissa's mouth. This was honestly the most fun book I've read in a long time, I loved it. You really see her personality grow in this book, and you never know who she will choose as a husband, this book is good at keeping you on your toes. I applaud T.K. for creating such a unique story filled with such amazing charcters. Read this book you will not regret it!
While romances aren't usually my favorite genre, the plot was great. The messages found in the book are a strong reminder to teens (the intended audience) that all our actions matter and we can't always take back words.
When this book arrived I was not sure if it was my style and put it aside as I had a dozen other books to revue. When I came to read it eventually I was hooked. It was based on an idea I had never come across before so I read on to find the storyline and became so engrossed by the characters That I finished it about 2.30 in the morning. The author has taken on an unorthodox idea and mastered it perfectly. This could have a "trashy" story however it is not and I would be pleased to recommend it to any pre-teen or adult. Thank you, T.K. Perry, for a good read.
What a pleasantly different story! I loved it!! Great imagination to blend the insect world with the world of humans! A coming of age love story but not your typical one! The whole time I was reading this story I was imagining what it would look like brought to life on the big screen?
Great story T.K. Perry!!! I can't wait to read more about Elissa's and Mit's life!!
This was an interesting book. Elissa got on my nerves a few times with her indecisiveness about which guy she wanted to marry. I never understood the love for Tull but the other men I could see why she was confused. I was happy with who she chose in the end and can't wait to read book 2 to see how it intertwines with this first book.
