This was a bit slow at first, but improved after the World was established. I was frustrated at first with Christopher's morality, but that is just me. I was impressed with Alice's strength and what she dug deep inside herself to break the compulsion of the hortari. Love is always the way. A good start to what should be a good series. Recommended Read!
What do you do when you like a story but dislike the narration? Constantly wish you were reading instead of listening of course. That's what I did as I listened to this book.
The character voice for Alice made me cringe every time I heard it and she has a lot of dialogue, the other character voices weren't much better. At times Christopher came across as weak and melodramatic because of how his dialogue was delivered. The overall delivery was also problematic for me, I found the phrasing weird and it just wasn't pleasant to listen to.
If I'd paid for this book I'd return it and buy the eBook instead, because while the narration drove me up the wall, the story was quite good. I enjoyed the idea behind the story and the characters are interesting. It's nicely written and flows well.
This book was supplied free by the author/narrator/publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
This had such a promising start... But then it came time for the change into a vampire and that's where I just got confused and started questioning more and more. It just seemed TOO easy to change into a vampire. They didn't die and have to go through this big process... They literally drank vampire blood and woke up a vampire. I had way too many unanswered questions and just felt from then on it was like being on the back of a horse that didn't know how to slow down. Overall, I still enjoyed but I'm really bummed to see this didn't continue because I was hoping to get more answers in future books and doesn't look like they will ever be cleared.
This was an easy and fun read. It was free but it was also super short and I understand the following books are also short. I prefer reading with a little more length and depth but I did enjoy this.
This was my first time reading A.J. Tipton and it definitely will not be my last. I truly enjoyed AJ's writing style, the banter between characters and the supernatural world AJ created.
First off, I enjoyed the read. However the entire story felt incredibly rushed. The characters had just met and were willing to spill their entire life story out immediately. I loved the descriptive scenes in the beginning but the sex scenes felt comical, forced even. Everything moved too fast for you to build up proper emotions toward characters. Sure there was a bit of intrigue with the bartender but it felt like the entire story was whirlwinding up to the sex scenes, which weren't great--and then spiraled through this brother vs brother fight for the throne. Alice breaking the sire command could have been so epic but the way it was written came off as more of a cliche than anything which was so disappointing. Honestly the best scene was Christopher confronting his brother and even that could have been drawn out a few more chapters to get the full emotional buildup.
Again, I did enjoy the read but there's so much that I felt was missing. I hope to read more in the future.
Steamy vampire novel, with not a sparkle in sight!
I absolutely loved this book! A young photographer, Alice, meets a debonair gentleman, Christopher, at an art gallery that's showcasing her work. The story quickly turns up the heat as these two characters carry on their conversations where they left off, their instant attraction evident and intense. Just when I thought this story was going to be a romantic tale of forbidden love, the twists spun me right round, and I was swept away by the action. Great story, excellent detail, and scenes that will leave you reaching for a fan! I'm looking forward to grabbing the next books in the series.
AJ Tipton's writing immediately caught my attention with its beautiful, lyrical, cadence. From there, the world building was fresh and fun, and the characters have peaked my interest. This was a great introduction and I am ready to begin the next book. Now. **fading laughter**
I loved the authors take on vampirism it made better sense to me. I don't like explicit sex scenes and they are in this book for grown adults only… However the author did make them brief. My phone only allows a solid star rating system. My review is 3 1/2 stars rounding that up to four. A very good book and it moved along swiftly perfect for summer reading. There wasn't a cliffhanger ending, there are more books in this series. I'm happy reading just this one..
My love of vampires started when I was 15! 42 years ago and I still love a good vampire story. This book was good but there are pages missing!!! You read for a bit then turn the page and nothing is there so you go to the next and it's starting somewhere new! There were several of these blank pages, it was very frustrating. 3 stars because what was there was well written.
This was an interesting take on siring vampires and it included a sweet romance. I enjoyed this story very much. It is well written with well developed characters which is rarely found in a short story.
Well this was not what I expected. When I originally ordered this book I was not expecting it to be only 95 pages, but once I saw the size, I didn't want to prejudge it, size isn't everything, at least when it comes to books ;) This novella kept me on my toes from page one all the way to the end with its minimalist world building, minor character arcs, and decent plot. No, there was not a lot of world building, it was bare bones at its best parts but the world it did create enticed me enough to want to know more about it. I enjoyed the sire command aspect that was explored within its' pages and wished for it to be longer to further flesh this idea out. I found it very interesting and compelling. The characters, for as little interaction that we got with most them, I found to be very endearing, I could clearly pick out favorites and ones that I would like to further know about. The plot was great! I loved this concept that Vampire prince actually puts forth thought into who he sires and why. The idea that artists and creative individuals are among the preferred choices amazed me. I loved how the authors fleshed that out.
Since the novella was so short, the plot had to be severely condensed, which did not leave room for a lot of build up and longing for the characters, which made the sex scenes, although steamy; they lacked that emotional component that I enjoy as the reader. I found it to be very insta-lust and insta-lovey, which if I had more time with the characters instant always a bad thing, but in this case I didn't feel like it worked for the story. It just felt like, hey we need a sex scene so lets have this chick hook up with this guy after, not even a date, but rather a proposition to completely and forever change your life, because that is totally sexy. There was no build up for the sex scene, just a straight forward, hey I am going to have sex with you and than you will change me, sound good, awesome; very much lacking in emotion. While in the beginning, this same character is to timid to talk to people about her artwork and hides away at her own gallery showing. Just didn't mix well with me.
However, this story has a great concept and outline, I would love this to fleshed out and turned into a full length novel. I think with more world building and more development this could be something really special.
I gave this book five stars because it was well written and worth the time to read. The story of romance during time of impending war between the good vampires and the bad was an excellent story and the plot had twists and turns that kept me reading page after page. I could not put this down. The romance between Christopher and Alice was incredibly strong and enduring. Alice had to fight for their love when Christopher thought he had no choice but to walk away from her because of the hortatory. She proved him wrong. An excellent read. I highly recommend this book. It will not disappoint.

This novella goes light on character development with cardboard cutouts rather than flawed, three-dimensional personalities. The good are very good, the bad are just plain evil. That said, the narrative rolls at breakneck pace, dialogue is natural, and the romance ignites in a flash. I noticed no editing glitches, which merits one full star. The heroine's ability to break her site's power of compulsion smacks of the scene in Ella Enchanted when that heroine breaks her gift of obedience. In short, it's both cheesy and sweet. So, the story gets three stars and the clean editing gets one star.
This was a fast paced novella that felt like it took place over three days. The Insta love and Insta victories felt hollow. This book would’ve been better served to be twice as long and have gone more into detail. To give the characters depth. To make it feel like time has passed and that things were really a struggle and harder won. This was like reading the Cliff Notes version of an epic saga. I would’ve loved to read that epic saga.
Having said that, I tip my hat to anybody that writes and publishes a book. These characters repealing and I’d like the world building. I just really wanted more.
Alice was a woman who rather fade into the woodwork than interact with a crowded room of people. But in this room is a vampire who happens to be her one soulmate. He loved her before barely knowing her. She had an immediate attraction to him from the first moment. But to keep her safe he was willing to live centuries remembering his feelings for her and not turn her into a vamp. His rival brother was evil and sadistic. The fight for the throne was fantastic and the intense love of Alice and Christopher was absolutely amazing. Good read and intense!
This is a very fast-paced paranormal romance. Read in one sitting, it had me intrigued and moved very quickly into the story. A lot happens in a small little book, there are no chapters in this. It goes between the FMC & the MMC, but it flows nicely and easy to follow. Excited to see what the other books have in store.
Would I recommend? If you’re okay with a very fast-paced quick read and insta-love trope. Along with paranormal romance. This is a great palette cleanser to not be taking too seriously.
I chose this rating because this book is absolutely fantastic! It has vampires, action and philosophy in it. What more could you ask for? It tells the tale of Alice, a photographer, and Christopher, a vampire, who come together at her first art show. It tells how they fall in love and what she's willing to do to stay with him. I recommend this book to anyone who loves vampire stories. I think everyone who reads it, will enjoy it.
Prince Christopher Dal has always been attracted to art and unique individuals who with enough time could do great things. So he proposed immortality to an upcoming photographer Alice, Alice couldn't resist its temptation but what she desires most was a lifetime with Christopher. However Christopher is called to the castle to pay rightful claim to the throne only his brother Rhys is there. Battle for the throne happens but love conquers. Very sweet story
Quick read, but doesn't really inspire me to continue the series. Decent story and could have been amazing but the plot just felt too rushed and did not allow me to connect to the characters enough to continue on.
I did enjoy the hotari aspect of this story - the two sides to controlling vs. not controlling as a lot of paranormal books I have read have not really addressed that notion of vampirism.
I feel that I would've enjoyed this book more if it were longer. It was quite rushed and I feel like Alice would've needed more time to decide if she wanted to become a vampire or not. I understand that this was a short story so events do move quickly. But I would've really loved for it to go on longer because this book has that kind of potential. I did like the character's Alice and Christopher and their built up steamy romance!
I really like the fact that she was able to break the hortari... Men can be such dumbasses... I'm just very very glad he wasn't able to force her to go away from him ❣️ I like the characters and I really love the action plus the little bit of romance that was included. The sex scenes were hot. The only thing I not necessarily want to complain about just wondering if Rhys is going to escape❓ Since he wasn't beheaded; I would be concerned, because if it would have been me he would be one headless vamp❗❗
