I was so disappointed in this book. I had such high hopes for this concept when I purchased the book but after reading 30 percent of the book I was still not hooked. If you are thinking of reading this book save yourself the trouble. Was not worth it in the end.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

I kick butt angel fighting demons what more can you really want? Welcome to L.A. where Mary, a fallen angel, lives taking out demons while she searches for a friend and a way to get back into heaven. Acting human is a challenge but over time she is getting better though she hilarious while she tries. She gets wrapped up in case that quickly goes South and the next thing she knows her best friend has been taken leaving her few options. I would love to know where the author gets her ideas from because I could not have come up with even half of this. it was great and quite surprising leaving us guessing hanging on the edge of the seat. If you enjoy supernatural mystery type books then you should really try this one. The end leaves us wanting book two I must say. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

The nice thing about the books by Bedford is that they are light, easy and usually not that long. It are the perfect books to read on busy days or with a busy head or when I'm not feeling too well or just when I like a quick and easy and entertaining read. So, when Booksprout told me that she had added 4 more books to review I didn't hesitate for a moment. I mean, normally I wouldn't get so many review copies by the same author at once, but what could go wrong?

Luckily this book is indeed exactly what I had expected it to be. Although some heavy themes are discussed in this book and people with sexual harassment and rape triggers should totally be careful while reading this book, it was a quick and easy read for me. This is partly because of Bedford's writing style, that's never too flowery and comes to the point and on top of that really fits the character who's point of view we're reading. But it's also because she never lets the story drag. She writes what needs to be written and nothing more.

The result is therefore a quite fast paced story with little to no info dumping and a lot of action. What I love about this book was the mythology of angels, demons and heaven and hell. I'm quite curious to learn more about those two parts of this world, but I'm also quite curious to see how Mary will deal with the rest of her life on earth. Although loads of details concerning the mythology are missing I never felt like I missed information needed to understand the story or what's going on.

It also helps that Mary is quite a cute and entertaining character. As an angel she has some issues adapting to living as a human. The way she views our world and discovers new things makes it easy to like her and to root for her. It also made me grin quite a few times. Add a little touch of innocence to the mix and a lot of bad ass skills and slightly supernatural power and you get the perfect leading lady for this saga. I'm glad I got the other three books too and I can't wait to read them to find out what issues, problems and challenges are waiting for Mary!

This is one of *THE BEST* UF or supernatural-character-fiction books I've read lately. I credit that to a believable (fantasy) plot without trying to be an over-the-top super intense story. The main character is a fallen angel living as a human & making the best of her situation. There were many times I found myself laughing while reading the dialogue between the (MC) Mary & her human assistant/friend, as well as her thoughts about humans. And then we have demons & the fun really begins! I found myself swiping through chunks of this book w/o feeling any time pass. It was definitely a fun read. I experienced zero page-filler/irrelevant nonsense as I read this book. As my first by Erin Bedford, I'm impressed & I gotta say, I like her style. I'll be starting book 2 very soon. I recommend this to all fantasy lovers, especially those seeking a laugh. :)

Marked By Hell by Erin Bedford is book 1 in her Mary Wiles Chronicles series. Mary is an angel without her wings on earth. Here she is pretending to be a human and runs a P.I. business. Most of the time she's looking for demons and specializes in cases that deal in the paranormal but most of the cases she gets are your typical "I'm looking to see if my spouse is cheating on me." It pays the bills...when Mary actually remembers to get payment for the services rendered. Lately the cases for demons and exorcisms are coming in more and that is beginning to worry Mary because it means that something is going down and with this many it can't be good. What comes next is worse...young women are being killed in a specific way and the cops are just now letting Mary in on the situation. She quickly puts together that there have been several before the case she's finally brought in on and she knows it spells major trouble. But trouble keeps on coming. The police want her to be the bait to be the next victim thing is is that it not only nearly gets her killed when she comes face to face with more than she can handle but then someone who trusts and depends on her becomes a part of it as well. So now Mary has to make a choice and it has to be one she can live with.
Marked by Hell is an engaging first installment of this series. I could hardly put this book down but when I had to my fingers were itching to get back to and find out what happens next. I absolutely love that the author still has Mary working out the mechanics of being or at least pretending to be human. She doesn't quite understand the emotions and feelings that people get and why they do certain things but thanks to a little unwanted help from the demons she gets a clue or two and begins to piece things together. She can be a bit automaton at times but I like that she cares for and about her assistant especially when she, Mary, gets into a couple situations and she tries to make sure that the girl knows she's okay.
There were a couple spelling errors in here but other than that I really loved this book. It really flowed well for me and I loved how realistic some of the characters were in how they acted and reacted. There is just the right touch of humor in this book and I love the budding romance that is going on. Not a lot but just enough to pull you in and keep things moving forward. Needless to say...I want more!!!!!
In my opinion this book is a great start to a brand new series by this talented author and I cannot wait for more books about Mary Wiles. I know they are going to be a real blast for sure. If you're a fan of this author and considering this book I say get it and get it now! It's a great deal and you will not be disappointed. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars!!!

And this started out so well...
I loved the premise, and while a little clunky, I enjoyed the initial introduction of the world and the cast.
At around 90% this book shows its true face and deteriorates into a chaotic mess.

I am too tired to write even a rant about all the stuff that is abysmally bad at the end there.
It's a bit like a bad superhero comic threaded through with stuff that is supposed to be serious but unintentionally approaches slapstick levels of Oggy and the Cockroaches.

Just don't. It seems fine at first, but just no.

As bland as urban fantasies can possibly get. No character development, no mystery or intrigue and a serious case of things-happen-when-and-how-they're-needed-even-if-it-makes-no-sense. Here's an example;

I finished it but have no desire to read the rest.

Wanted To Like It

First, there were numerous copy editing issues within this book, and that bothers me. Second, the main character kept getting into trouble because of NOT doing the same thing time after time. That's a tedious plot driver. I'm torn between hoping the second book is better and not caring enough to find out. Not the worst thing I've read.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

DNF

I'm having another run of books by 'new to me authors' that the premise sounds like my sort of book, but I dislike them. :( -- ((Am not well and trying to find a book to make me feel better, that's not a re-read.))

Positive = it was an interesting idea.

Negative =
The idea was badly executed IMHO.

[] Didn't really like the MC, though I liked her the most of all the characters. -- I think the writer did her a disservice.
[] Didn't like her assistant / friend.
[] Didn't like the ex demon hunter her other friend.
[] Found the love interest repulsive.

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: No

Would you recommend?: No

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

This was a fast and an enjoyable read.

The story is about an angel who is stuck in human world. Mary or Muriel is an angel sort of exiled to human plane without consent. Her wings have been sawed off, however, she has no clue who did it. It happened in hell dimension. She's been living in the human world trying to blend in as a human working as a PI. She has very few friends as she's pretty guarded and stays busy with all the demon hunting. Besides hunting cheating spouses she also hunts demons on the side. Mary's also working with LAPD on a retainer with one of the detectives. In other words, she keeps busy but, at the same time finds the human world conflicting and confusing. It was interesting to see her figure out humanity as an angel living amongst the humans having to blend in like a mere human.

The world building is minimal and all the relationships, friends, past etc. are established. There is no build up. It felt in a way, book 2 in a series to me. Where most of the build up is done in book 1 and book 2 brushes over it the little stuff. The reason Mary was on the human plane was not clear to me. I know she was here cuz she tried to save her friend Ramiel and went after him despite the orders. However, we have absolutely no details about it even to the very end except from what Mary tells us several times that he was her bff and commanding officer. She's on a vengeance path to retrieve her friend and find out who cut off her wings.

Her response to Sid, her bartender friend and apparently, who she has the hots for also felt kind of lukewarm. I wasn't feeling the tension, or connection. I assumed he was just a random friend who she likes...not LIKES in other ways. I'm still on the fence about him. I knew there was something more to him and we find out later in the book.

Overall, it is short and fun. Would I continue with the series....maybe.

Mary once lived in heaven as an angel. Now she's a private investigator on earth with the paranormal as her specialty. Mary hates demons and exterminates them whenever she gets the chance. Demons tortured her and sawed of her wings. Mary still struggles with the horrific things they've done to her. When another dead body turns up, Mary is being called in by the L.A.P.D. because of her expertise. She knows immediately that this is the work of demons. They have to act fast because at the next full moon another girl will be killed if these demons aren't being stopped. Will Mary be able to put her personal crusade aside to save humanity?

Mary is adjusting to life as a human. I loved her from the beginning. She's a feisty and badass angel, but she's also so innocent and angelic at the same time. Humans and angels are very different. Mary doesn't really have to eat or sleep and she prefers to shower with holy water. Mary is hilarious and I loved how she thinks about life on earth. She's new to how men and women interact with each other and never had a first kiss. Because of her innocence Mary is incredibly honest and loving. She'll go to the ends of the earth for people to keep them safe. If angels would ever be living among us I wish they will all be like Mary.

Marked by Hell is the first book in a new series about Mary Wiles. I have read other books by Erin Bedford and I love how she makes even the most unreal things feel real. Mary is tough and I like stories with strong main characters. Her sidekick Trisha is a young girl who manages to keep Mary focused on the important things. They're a great team together. I think Erin Bedford has grown enormously as an author and she shows that with Marked by Hell. This new series definitely got off to a flying start. Marked by Hell is a masterpiece and I can't wait for the next book in this series.

A fantastic book. Erin Bedford did it again with angels and demons. The story about Mary Wiles has just touch the surface in this first book but the players are introduced. Mary the still hasn't been determined 'fallen angel' " fallen implies you had a choice". The wonderful sweet assistance Trisha that has to much brains but not much common since. Then there's the LAPD sergeant Thompson who believes in the supernatural but doesn't know exactly what Mary is. And last but not least there's Sid. He's the owner of The Night Owl Bar and a whole lot more. Hot sexy and Mary's crush. But she is an angel has no idea what that feeling is she gets when she's near him. Those are the main character so far.
Mary hunts down demons and sends them back to Hell. She makes a living as a PI and being a specialist for the PD. There have been several murders of young woman and Mary is called to help. Mary's going undercover and Trisha takes her shopping for dresses. Mary has no idea why humans are so interested in clothing. That's when Sid knows she's hot and Mary gets the strange feelings. The demons get Mary and it's not just lower level demons is also one badass Asmodeus the demon of lust. Now, in heaven if you want a child you paired up and have one, so Mary has no idea what lust, sex and love us all about. She's kidnapped but she gets away, killing only a few of the demon ring that are killing virgins. Mary has her first lustful feeling when Sid comes and gets her. The first kiss that has her wanting more. In the meantime, Asmodeus does the wrong thing and takes Trisha. Mary and Sergeant Thompson go after her. I can say that's when some of Mary's pass comes out and that's when Trisha finds out Mary's an angel. Mary finds out that love hurts. The story has just begun and Mary Wiles is a fantastic character. I can't wait to read the next book.

Mary Wiles is a badass PI who specialises in The Occult - exorcising demons with the help of her little secret...she's an angel.

With the help of her sassy and equally badass assistant, Mary assists the LAPD with a murder case which points to demon activity. The case forces Mary to confront her lack of understanding of human intimacies, as well as the trauma that led to her being stuck on earth.

This was a fast paced plot but managed to not feel rushed. There is an inkling of a potential future romance but on the whole it was very much action over romance, and a smidge of low level spice. It was giving me Lucifer vibes which made me very happy because I adore that show, but it was different enough and significantly darker so it stands as a great plot in its own right.

I really enjoyed getting to know Mary and her nuances, and her lack of understanding of human life. The interactions with Trisha were wholesome and both characters match eachother really well. I think this book sets up really well for the rest of the series and I'm definitely interested to see how it plays out from here on! Side characters could do with a bit more fleshing out, so hopefully that happens as the series goes on, but there are definitely some promising characters that I'm interested in getting to know more.

The plot was dark but it was written in a subtle and manageable way, but of course check specific trigger warnings before you jump in.

This isn’t the first book I’ve read by Ms. Bedford, but all the other ones have been romances with a fairy tale twist. I really enjoy the way she writes so I eagerly read this one. I’m very glad I did. I found the plot a unique take on demons and angels, the book was well-written as all of her books I’ve read so far have been, and I really liked the characters. Mary was a very sympathetic character, and her sadness came through about what had happened in the past. I’m still a little in the dark about exactly what happened, but I’m sure that will be cleared up in the next book. I also really liked Trisha, her assistant. I hope we get to see more of her in future books since she now knows what Mary is. However, I do have to admit I was on the fence about Sid. I don’t feel I got to know him as well as I would have liked, but this is a first book, and I know I’ll get to know him better. If you are a fan of her romances, I have to warn you there isn’t much romance in this one. The potential is there, but it hasn’t come to fruition much yet. Don’t let that keep you from reading this, though. This was an all-around great book. I’ve already pre-ordered the next in the series, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. If you like light urban fantasy, you will love this. Highly recommend! This exact review will be posted on both Amazon and Goodreads.

Readers will definitely find themselves very quickly hooked by this book, it concretes the opinion that the author has a brilliant talent for creating imaginative and vivid tales with unique and complex characters.

One of the things I loved the most about the storyline is that it keeps you guessing, every time that a question is answered another question appears in it's place. It is filled with action, a fast pace thrilling tale that will keep you hooked the whole way through!!! After the way that this story ended you are left needing to get the next story and I can't wait to get started on it!!!!

The characters in this book are really addictive to read about and you really want to know more about them especially Mary and Sidney. You feel the need to know who they are and what experiences in their lives have made them who they are and what makes them make the decisions that they make. If you are like me and love a strong and capable female character who relies on herself and doesn't need a knight in shining armour to come and save her then this is definitely the book for you not to mention how talented the author is! Reading one if her books will keep you hooked on her books for life!!!

A must read page Turner of a book that will leave you gagging for more!!!!

Angels and demons! What an exciting ride!

Mary's no ordinary Angel... She's no fallen Angel either; she has a story that led her to earth - one filled with heartache. For the past five years, she's taken on a job as PI, exercising demons on the side and working for the police department as an occult specialist with the help of her human friend and assistant, Trisha.
One case nearly brings Mary to her knees. She's fighting demons who know about her past... Allies she thought she had could be enemies. It's hard to trust anyone. Working with the Sgt on a case she thought would be pretty much open and shut, leads to so much more...
Erin truly outdid herself in this new series! I love everything about it - the characters, world building, how you're drawn in from the very beginning. Mary's nativity of the human world makes for great comedy relief, alongside her friend Trisha who unknowingly teaches her the ways of the world. I loved every aspect of this book and can't wait for the next installment! Five Angelic Stars!

I was given an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

So Mary is really Muriel - an Angel - well actually an Archangel:

Muriel means “Perfume of God.” This is a female archangel who brings peace and harmony to one’s life. She is responsible for carrying around the message of peace and harmony to people on the Earth.

Her angelic responsibilities also include tending the plants and animals on this Earth.

Depicted with a crown made of flowers, it is known that when she is in your presence, you will smell the scent of your favorite flower. When this happens, it will confirm that Archangel Muriel is somewhere near you. [https://www.guardian-angel-reading.co...]

But now she is on Earth after her wings have been removed by demons, she is not quite as peaceful as before - at least when it comes to fighting demons.

She is also not quite au fait with human behaviour and norms and speech. Which gives a lighter touch to this novel which could otherwise be rather dark as is it mostly about the fights she gets into when dealing with possessed humans.

Erin writes a good story and this is a good series of novels about Muriel and how she adapts to her new life and new companions.

Mary Wiles is an angel whose wings were removed by demons and she was left on Earth with no way to get back to heaven. She makes a living as a private investigator, tracking down cheating spouses and helping the police department with the spooky stuff on the side.

Mary was called to a crime scene where a dead woman was tied to a bed and torn apart with a smile on her face.Mary knows a ritual was being performed but not by who, other than demons, or why.

The writer drops you in the middle of Mary’s life and fills in details as you need them, much like film noir does. The action takes place in Los Angeles in a world that has an increasing number of demons and angels appearing and starting to interfere with human, who have no idea they are surrounded by supernatural beings.

The author sets up the world so that the reader often learns what’s going on when the protagonist does. This is written much like the film noir/hard-boiled detective novels but with a supernatural twist. Can’t wait for the next one.

Marked by Hell is the first book in the Mary Wiles Chronicles. Mary is an angel that was caught by Demons and they removed her wings. When she was let go she woke up on Earth. She is pretending to be a human running a Private Investigator business. Her only employee is an 18 year old by the name of Trisha. The typical cases Mary gets are cheating spouses. It helps pay the bills when she remembers to get paid. This is a running issue between her & Trisha. Lately she's been getting more cases involving demons which worries her. She also works for the Police Department when they need her help. They come to her when young women are being found murdered in the same way. They want her to go under cover as bait to find out who is killing all the young women and try to catch them. When she does this she finds out that someone she knows and trusted isn't who she thought he was. This is a really good book. I had a hard time putting it down after I started it. Mary & Trisha are pretty funny together. I like their banter. It's definitely worth 5 stars. You won't regret getting it.

Mary Wiles is trying to find her way back to heaven but has to fight off demons and then some to get there. She is an angel without wings that is making the best of her situation by trying to fit into the human world.

A murder case has fallen into her lap and she sets out to find the demons responsible for the act. Unfortunately, a mistake she makes during an undercover mission causes her best friend to be taken and Mary must decide whether to sacrifice what means to her to get revenge or risk losing the chance.

This is the first book that I have read by author Erin Bedford. She takes urban fantasy to another level by adding both action and a touch of humor. The character of Mary is a bit naïve in the ways of the human world which causes a few embarrassing moments for those around her (which equals a laugh out loud moment for the reader). There are just the right amount of action, suspense, paranormal elements, and even a little romance to entertain readers of many different genres.

Mary Wiles is the alias of the angel Muriel. Although Mary is living on Earth, do NOT call her a fallen angel. She is quick to let you know that fallen implies there was a choice and she definitely didn't have a choice. Now what can a angel living in Los Angeles do to make a living? Well Mary is a private detective specializing in the paranormal and cheating spouses. When her contact at the LAPD ask for her help with a murder, Mary uncovers a plan to bring a demon to the human realm. This case will cause Mary to find out things about herself and friends that she never would have seen coming. It will also set her on the track of her former angel friend and CO who has been missing since Mary came to Earth. I really enjoyed this story. It is a great start to a new series by Ms. Bedford. It is also a little "darker" than her other series but still a great read. Looking forward to the next installment.

This is the first book in a new series by Erin Bedford. The series revolves around Mary, who is an angel who, while looking for her missing commander, Ramiel, was captured by demons. During this time, her wings were taken, meaning she can't go back to Heaven - even if she wanted to. But Mary refuses to try to return without Ramiel.

Currently, Mary is a (paranormal) private investigator and uses what remains of her angelic powers to removes demons from Earth. As such, she helps out the local police department with "unusual" cases. The case in Marked by Hell involves sacrifices by lesser demons who are trying to summon the demon lord Asmodeus.

I have loved everything I have read by Erin Bedford, and this was no exception. I can't wait for the next installments in the series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. However, as I enjoyed it so much, I ended up buying it as well to show support for Ms. Bedford as well.

Even otherworldly beings have problems to live among humans. Or especially them.
Mary Wiles is a PI specializing in the occult, which is no coincidence - as a former angel, it is natural for her to hunt demons and banish them from the human plane. But while she is the kickass hunter, she struggles with the everyday life, not understanding the beings around her and lacking all sense of humor possible. When the local sergeant Thompson calls her to assist on an investigation of a series of murders, one look reveals the demonic nature to her, and she must even go undercover to solve the case. Which is quite a catch for her angelic nature.
Hilarious and enjoyable read, with great characters and fairly interesting plot. The often awkward interactions between Mary and her social contacts are really funny, and if you imagine some of the situations you can't hold your laugh back. I am really looking forward to reading the next book.

This is the first book by this author that I’ve had the pleasure of listening to. I quite enjoyed it. The story moves along rather quickly or at least it seemed that way to me because before I knew it, it was over. It has a good plot and the characters are easy to like.
Mary is a fallen angel come to earth searching for someone she cares deeply about. It’s many years since her fall and yet the memories still plague her mind and torment her.
Her company takes on a new case that proves to be quite challenging. The case takes many turns and there are lots of surprises around every corner. Could this case be the lead Mary’s been looking for? Is it too much to hope that she might actually be able to finally find her long lost friend, Ramiel?
The story ends with a bit of a cliffhanger but this is just the beginning of Mary’s adventure. I can’t wait to dive into the next part of her journey and find out what happens.

Mary is a fallen Angel who lost her wings while in Hell and is still after 5 years trying to work out how our world works like forgetting nudity isn't natural and embarrasses her side kick Trish by changing in her office/bedroom in front of her. She is working as a PI and brought into a murder investigation due to abnormal things at the scene from there she has to work with Detective Thompson to find out who is behind murdering not one but multiple girls before the final girl is sacrificed and a high Demon can walk among them. There are some good twists here as well as some world building starting to come through so looking forward to more in the series, my only thing is about Sid and how did Mary now know?

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I got this as an ARC for my honest opinion and review. I love the cover of this book. It has been awhile since I read a book that has angels and demons in it. I was not sure how this would compare to other books by Erin Bedford, but I love Mary's attitude. Mary is an Angel on earth that is working as PI. She is trying to find her way back to heaven. There is a lot she must learn and one big one is that there might not be just one way for her to get back to the divine. She sees the change in her cases and knows that something has to be done when she discovers demons are involved. First book in a series. Can't wait for more.

I would like to thank Booksprout and Embrace the Fantasy Publishing, LLC for this partnership.

I was immediately attracted by the cover: we see the beautiful Mary in the street in Los Angeles holding a gun in her hand.

It all starts when the LAPD comes to Mary for help in a case. She accepts because if it can help him to get revenge on the demons that have burned his wings. She will do everything to play it human and try to return home to heaven.

I loved this book from start to finish. Mary's character is very endearing with a captivating story filled with suspense and twists. I love the pen of the author who is addictive. Can wait to reading the second book.

Marked By Hell by Erin Bedford

Wow! What I ride this book has been. I loved the concept and after reading it I will certainly be looking for more books by Ms Bedford. The story-line is refreshingly gritty, coming from a perspective I’ve not read before; a concept I haven’t seen. Away from the mass of predictable reads, this book will leave you wondering where the next twist will be, when your thoughts and preconceived ideas will be tugged from you. A wealth of outstanding characters with an astounding background cast of support.

Exciting and difficult to put down!

A hit for me, with a five out of five star rating – I’d give more stars, but I’m not allowed.

I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it. It was so very intriguing. The spin on heaven and hell and on fallen angels and demons is amazing. Mary is so mysterious in so many ways and in others she is vulnerable and laid bare for the reader. The supporting characters are equally entertaining. Sidney is beyond interesting and I hope there is more of him in the next book. The plot for this book is unique and I hope the author finds ways to continue this series for several books! I volunteered to read this book.
