The era of dragons has passed but is not forgotten. There will be at least this one last ride, one last battle, before the masters of the domain of air fade into history and become legend.
The Storymaster is a prequel novella to the Dragon Masters epic fantasy series by Vincent Trigili and originally appeared in The Dragon Chronicles, an anthology edited by Samuel Peralta.
The Storymaster is the keeper of tales of old which he primarily shares with his great grandchildren now. When they ask for a story he tells them of David's Last Ride, a tale of the last of the dragons and their riders.
The Storymaster is somewhat underwhelming. It tells a story within a story that neatly ties back in hopes to appeal to readers. Unfortunately the last of the dragons and whatever secrets they may hold truly weren't all that interesting to me. It seems likely the main series stories will be different, but this short story doesn't seem to add anything overly important.
The Storymaster by Vincent Trigili is a short story about an aged storyteller with little time left to live. He passes down a mythos to his grandchildren involving an age where dragons existed. He shares a story that he calls the Last Ride of David which involves a rescue of cargo ships that have been delayed. The Dragonriders mount their dragons and trace the path the ships should have taken and witness that the cargo ships are being attacked by pirates. The Dragonriders attack the pirates and an entire mythology is spun as a consequence. The storyteller passes on his gifts semi-ritualistically and returns to his bed. This is a nice little story. Middle of the road part of a larger fantasy story involving dragons and the stories told about them.
The author quickly engaged me in this story with the dry wit and the likeable and yet flawed characters. There were some characters (the "bad" guys) who I didn't like so all characters are well written. I wanted to know what was going to happen to the characters so I kept turning the page to find out.
Sex: none Language: none Violence: a couple fight scenes involving dragons but no gory or graphic included Religion: a couple references are made to elements of the Christian faith
I downloaded this today and realized with the first paragraph that I had already read it - in an anthology, I think. So I read it again, because I like it.
Now I remember that it was this short story that prompted me to find the rest of The Dragon Masters series, which I'm still reading. Good stuff!
A very short book with a very strong story. A story of an old storyteller who is ready to tell his last story. So her makes it his favorite. He tells the story of "David's last Ride". A story of the dragon masters of old and how they ended. It wasn't a very long story but was a good story. I'm interested in the rest of the series. They gave you a taste, but I want more.
This is a wonderful and entertaining short story that is also Volume Zero of a series that I think I'm going to love. I highly recommend it to anyone that likes dragon stories or adventure, so that's everyone, right😉.
Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author and I want to share this with you through my honest review.
A little slow but hopefully the next book in the series will be better and more entertaining with more explanations about how the dragonmaster and Francine one.
This is a prequel to The Silverleaf Chronicles and is as exciting and as well written as the Chronicles. If you like dragon rider fantasy this book and this series is for you.
A powerful story teller tells the story of the last dragon and his dragonmaster to the grandchildren. It's a loving way to pass on this great tradition to his family.
As a new reader to theses episodes and stories, I am so glad I got to read this one 1st. I could have been one of the young children crowded around the storyteller's chair. Listening avidly to old grandpa tell his stories. Dreaming!!! Wouldn't it be grand to ride to dragons myself. And then the real books begin and it is all real!!!!!!!
