Erin Radkey’s life has altered completely since her Change made her one of the Unbounded. But some things never change.
Greed. Over the centuries the long-lived Unbounded have divided into two groups, the Emporium who craves money and power and will do anything to achieve its ends, including experimenting on its own people, and the Renegades who protect humanity.
Power. Now the Renegades are close to discovering a cure that will save many dying mortals, and the husband of Erin’s closest friend is first in line to receive the formula. But Emporium agents will stop at nothing to destroy the cure—until they realize the research might be exactly the weapon they’ve been searching for.
Love. Erin’s new abilities are tested as she and fellow Renegades fight the Emporium in a struggle that soon becomes all too personal, and where lines of loyalty are blurred by relationships of the past. Everything is at risk, including the lives of her friends—and the love of Ritter Langton, the Renegade Unbounded who both infuriates and excites her.
From the busy streets of Portland to the jungles of Mexico, The Cure is a page-turning urban fantasy that will keep you riveted until the very end
Teyla Rachel Branton grew up avidly reading science fiction and fantasy and watching Star Trek reruns with her large family. They lived on a little farm where she loved to visit the solitary cow and collect (and juggle) the eggs, usually making it back to the house with most of them intact. On that same farm she once owned thirty-three gerbils and eighteen cats, not a good mix, as it turns out. Teyla always had her nose in a book and daydreamed about someday creating her own worlds. She is now married, mostly grown up, and has seven kids, so life at her house can be very interesting (and loud), but writing keeps her sane. She thrives on the energy and daily amusement offered by her children, the semi-ordered chaos giving her a constant source of writing material. Grabbing any snatch of free time from her hectic life, Teyla writes novels full of mystery, romance, and imagination. She warns her children that if they don’t behave, they just might find themselves in her next book! She’s been known to wear pajamas all day when working on a deadline, and is often distracted enough to burn dinner. (Okay, pretty much 90% of the time.) A sign on her office door reads: DANGER. WRITER AT WORK. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK. She loves writing fiction and traveling, and she hopes to write and travel a lot more. She also loves shooting guns, martial arts, and belly dancing. She has worked in the publishing business for over twenty years.
This story picks up about two months after the first book. Erin and her group of Renegade Unbounded are on their way to Mexico to not only get a cure for an autoimmune disease, but also to save the life of a Senator who is going to be visiting down there.
This was basically non-stop action from start to finish. We get reunited with a lot of the same characters from previous books and introduced to some new ones. I did enjoy this one, maybe a tad less than the first book. Erin is continuing to grow as a character and to learn more about her own abilities and those of her friends. The romance aspect was lacking for me, I am just not feeling a love connection. An attraction? Yes. Love? No. They haven't spent nearly enough time together for that and the time they are together is under very stressful situations. But, I have an open mind and look forward to seeing where things will go.
Overall, I thought this was a fun read. Again, its pretty violent. There's a lot of fighting, killing and regenerating. The author doesn't shy away from making the bad guys bad, which I guess makes it easier for the good guys to get rid of them. It's never gory or too detailed. Anyway, if you don't mind some war type violence, then this is a fun series to get into. I look forward to reading the rest.
Content: Clean romance, very mild swearing (maybe 1-2 cuss words), and violence (there is an attempted rape at the beginning that's disturbing, but is stopped quickly.)
I had such high hopes for this book and this series. However, this author killed any hope I had for continuing with it. In the first book, Erin had her annoying moments, but in this book, she had a lot of dumb moments.
It seemed like she constantly needed saving or help when it came to the fighting. While I be the first to admit that there are some male opponents that a woman is going to need help fighting, it didn't need to be just about everyone she came across.
Situation One:
Erin is in the park on assignment watching Mari, a potential new Renegade Unbounded, who is attacked by hunters. In my opinion, Erin waited way too long to act. I was sitting there like damn, are you gonna wait till after she's raped to attack?? Once she did, she was able to get the two hunters down eventually, but was almost shot by Mari had it not been for Ritter to show up and take the gun away as well as take down the rest of the hunters that would've came to aid the hunters Erin fought.
Situation Two:
In a jungle in Mexico, the team is attacked by bandits that rob and sell those they come across in the forest. Erin is left in the Pinz with Benito (I'll touch on later) while the men go out and fight those they come across. But even though Erin is in the Pinz, she's also attacked by two men. She's able to barely take care of one and the second one had to be shot by Ritter because she hesitated and that almost got her severely injured or dead....at least for a short period of time.
Granted, I completely get why someone would hesitate in killing another human being. But she's in a world where it's kill or be killed, and if she keeps hesitating before she kills or injures someone who's not unbounded, she's never going to be able to handle herself in a battle. It was just frustrating that she's not becoming accustomed to the world she lives in and death is a big part of that world in terms of battle and just losing loved ones due to old age.
Situation Three: (The most annoying)
After talking to the senator about the possible threat to his life, she decides to follow Tom. Why Keene let her go, I don't know because while she says that she is over her feelings for him, she can't kill him. At the end of the book she proves this by not being able to kill Justine nor Tom. Why she thought this was good decision, I have no idea either. Even though she knows she's not fully capable of what Jace, Ritter, and the others are capable in battle, she seems to think she's trained enough. Which lands her in, yet again, Emporium's grasp. Then she can't escape because Mari and Benito are captured with her and she has them to think about.
It was very annoying to see her repeat the same mistakes and think herself capable when she's not. Sorry honey, you weren't written that way. Maybe some day.
Nowwwwww Benito......
I just... I don't even... Can someone explain to me WHY he was in this book? Maybeeeee it was supposed to be as a comical relief person? Maybeeeee not? I have no clue.
It wasn't that I didn't like his character, he gave me a few chuckles, but I don't think he should've been in this book.
Benito is a hispanic male that tried to rob Erin and Mari at gunpoint. Erin offered him a job because she was tired of a leaky sink and upon peaking in his mind, she found that he was good with a wrench.
Now... harmless enough But he eventually takes the job and ends up on a plane with them to Mexico It also wasn't that I didn't like his "story line" so to speak
It was the way he was treated by the others. He was treated as baggage and less than. Granted, did he show up at a shitty time? Maybe. But how is that his fault? He came back asking for a job, he didn't know what he was getting himself into. Examples:
"Shut up." Ritter yanked the curtain down."You have no choice. Now go sit in your seat and stay there until we tell you, or you'll join them." (In reference to the locked up and unconscious Emporium Unbounded) He shoved Benito down the isle.
Before he could finish, Ritter made a motion with his finger and Keene grabbed Benito, practically hauling him down the stairs.
"Get that lazy Benito out here, would you? He has to start pulling his weight somehow."
"Get into that bathroom and clean up. You Stink, and I won't endure another minute of your presence." Benito struggled to a sitting position as she shoved a plastic bag of clothing at his stomach, nearly toppling him again.
Maybe it was because he was mortal, but Mari wasn't seen or treated as a burden even though she appeared just as unexpectedly as Benito did. And yes, I know her mind was in a very fractured state, but she was never once referenced in that way. Just something about the fact that Benito was Mexican and treated poorly didn't sit right with me while I was reading.
I also often found Erin's inner monologues pretty annoying. It seemed to be the same thing over and over and over again. Like we get it, being unbounded has it's perks, your ability isn't advancing the way you'd like, there's one sensing unbounded that you're afraid of, Ritter and moving past his revenge, being unbounded means losing those you love that are not unbounded before you age another year, the list goes on...
The story line held so much promise. It was different and the writing wasn't too bad. Erin just became too much of an annoying main character. And for someone who read the first book, I didn't like that basically anything that was related to the first book in anyway was explained again...like she's talking to her audience if that make sense. Do y'all remember the intro to Junie B. Jones books? How'd she say "Hi, my name is Junie B. Jones. The B. stands for Beatrice. But I don't like Beatrice...." That's what it reminded me of. In my mind, if you read the first book, you know what happened, you don't need the recount the entire book. Reserve that for the beginning and then get into the new goods sister.
Can't say I'll be reading the next book...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I really like this series because it is so action packed. Every chapter has the Unbounded crew (and their mortal allies) battling for their lives against the Emporium/Triad and Mortal Hunters. While there is some romance (very PG), it's more about the establishing of romantic interests.
At this point, I think I'm going to take a little detour from continuing on with "The Escape" and read some of the other novella's in the series like the one on Ava and then maybe the one on Chris.
This book was amazing! I couldn't not put it down. With The original attractiveness you are emotionally attached to the characters. Good or not so good. I felt there grief and happiness. Good clean fun! I was truly only disappointed with one thing..... it ended! I wanted more, now! Amazing totally recommended! I'm keeping my eyes peeled to the next book! Loved it!
I like this series, although I do find it annoying when you can see where the tale is going. I don't see the point of books that give you solid 'hints' at what sort of things are to come.
I loved this book, full of action and plot twists as expected, we get new characters in this book.
This book starts with Erin on a mission to watch and protect a new unbounded (Mari), i loved seing Ern grow as a unbounded , she is still new but she got su much better with her abbilities and even helped and protected a new unbounded, i'm so proud.
Ritter, i love him but he is such a mistery, i liked that we get to know him better in this book like that he has an addoptive son and we kinda see he is opening up more to Erin, and like he is so strategic and smart and i can't wait to read more about him
Keene , he is just such a sweet guy, too bad he is mortal i really hope he finds love in someone who isn't Erin because she clearly likes Ritter and i wouldn't want him to get his heart broken, i admire him so much like he is human and he is out there fighting and risking his life although he is really good at fighting because all of his training, he's so brave and i loved seeing hm work with the renegades against the emporium.
Justine finally died , it was about time not exactly how i expected everything to happen it was all crazy but ok, and Tom i just felt bad for him though he was not the best he was just being controled and i thought it was just sad.
Poor Stella her husband died and she lost her baby , honestly she has such a kind heart like she literally sacrificed her baby (not intentionally but fighting) so that she could protect Chris's children and her abbility is so cool she is so smart. I secretly hope she gets together with Chris.
Jace is my favorite brother honestly, he is recently into this unbounded thing and he is just exited plus his ability gives him the urge to protect and fight so there is that, but i liked reading about him working with the renegades and already going on missions with Ritter and Erin.
Mari is just introduced in this book, but she seems chill and exited, i kinda ship her with Jace.
About the story, they were so many things that hapenned like they just got out of a fight and they were already getting into another while they were still healing from the past fight, that is how much action there is so if you want to be entertained this book is for you.
I had such a great time reading The Change, the first book in this series, so I was excited to jump into the sequel. It did not disappoint. There's a ton of action and a gripping story that never let up. It's extremely fast-paced. The story picks up a couple months after the ending of The Change. While The Cure might could standalone, I'd really recommend reading book one first.
Part of this story took place in the Mexican jungles which was an intriguing setting. A couple of new people join the team, so that was an interesting shakeup. Erin didn't frustrate me nearly as much as she did in the first book. She seemed to have grown a lot in the couple of months since her change. I really like Keene. I don't know if I'm supposed to like him as much as I do, but... yeah... he's giving Ritter a run for his money in my book. But Ritter's awesome, too. Extremely stubborn, though.
All in all, The Cure was a fantastic sequel that I didn't want to put down. I can't wait to pick up book three, The Escape.
I had so much trouble reading this book. I kept closing the book to do other things.
The premise of the book is interesting and brings the main character into a new location. Personally, I felt it was a bit early in the series to move into a new Country when we've barely explored her current location. Although, the Renegade group seems to move constantly and never has a home.
I do not like the fact that their hideouts are so easily found by the Emporium (bad Unbounded). So many negative things are happening to the group. Truthfully, I wonder how any of them have survived this long.
I think I had so much trouble with this book because of all the depressing aspects. No home, no real life for the character, no sex due to insane fertility (they can cure Cancer, but can't make a good anti-fertility drug?), the constant losing of people and always getting captured. So much negativity!
I have the next book downloaded, so I'll probably look through it out of curiosity.
This is second book in the Unbounded series, it is a great fast paced book with lots of action. I love this series. Clean, fun read.
The unbounded are separated into two groups, The Emporium, who crave money and power and who will stop at nothing to get both. The Renegades who try valiantly to protect humanity at all costs. With so few Renegades and numbers dwindling, having Erin part of their community has been a great blessing. Erin has stepped into her new Unbounded life as if she was always part of their cause. In this the second book of the series, the Emporium are trying to destroy a cure that would help many dying mortals, the renegades want the cure to save the husband of her closest friend and open research up to the world for other dying mortals.
Intense, delicious, riveting. Teyla Branton is a master of writing complex stories with lots of twists, turns, bits and pieces floating around and somehow, someway - (she must be part mage) ties everything together and it is a roller coaster ride with heart stopping action. Even if you are not a died in the wool Sci-Fi addict - you'll love this book, and Book 1, as well. This is a book of people...great character studies in situations that could be real. There is a lot we don't know in this world and the way the Unbounded tales are told - you really can find your belief systems set aside and fall into this world wholeheartedly and want more.
This book brings the thought of family into this new life as well as what would we do for our "family." Erin must decide who to trust and if group alliances can change who is trustworthy. Is there only one answer to who is right and what should be done? As in all of life's choices nothing is black or white there are always shades of variants. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Branton. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
Tom find a out that who he thinks is his sister is really his mother and freaks out. The Mexico lab is attacked prisoners taken. Keene finds out some disturbing news. A lot of twists and turns later and we find info on a disc and some going after prisoners in New York. A different kind of series full of adventure but you should read the books in order to knowvwhatbisbgoing on.
I liked the book it moves fast with a. Lot of twists and turned the Actors in the script play well off of each other and make the story flow well, the plot was interesting but dragged in places, but kept me interested most of the time. I put this book down for a while and came back to finish to while looking for a new read and enjoyed the conclusion and kick off of the next installment.
3.5 Stars - This is a good book but I did enjoy the first one a little bit more. I felt like not as much happened in this book. I realize it is one of those series where you read about everything you do, which is completely fine, but not as much happened in this one like the first one. But honestly there were so many plot twists in the first book, it would be hard to always do that haha. None the less, still an enjoyable book, and hopefully I get around to reading the rest of the series.
Erin and her team have to fight of the evil ones again. This time they destroyed a lab in Mexico and Erin and her team are going there to save who and what can be saved. Ritter is back at the team, Erin is having mixed emotions about him. Mari is new to the team and trying out her new abilities.
Erin also has to fight Tom and Justine again.
Great read full of action, lots of action and suspense. Can't wait to read the next part in this series.
Well, of course, I'm now hooked on this Unbounded series! Book two continues the 'adventures' of the unbounded, where they must race against time and enemies to gather a cure...
Filled with action, thoughts, feelings and mystery - loved it.
I don't give spoilers but will say that this is a well-written and enjoyable read. The characters are intriguing and well-developed set within an equally intriguing story.
This book guides you through the story without much filler. It is interesting and the characters are believable. Of course the good guys win, but not without some losses.
This was a very good second book in the series. It carried on well from the first and was almost complete story in itself. A very good follow on from before can't wait to read the next one in inline.
The Renegades are up to their eyeballs in trouble caused by the Emporium, and Erin is smack dab in the middle of it. She is coming into her own as she becomes part of the team.
I am really enjoying this series. The Cure continues 2 months from the last book. I love the thrill of their missions and especially Erin and Ritter. I find the characters refreshing and each personality enjoyable.
Hmm I didn’t quite like this book as much as the first one. It seemed a little bit all over the place. Also, the change in the MC’s attitude and personality were not good. She was starting to get on my nerves by the end. I will keep reading the series and hope it improves.
Amazing how it keeps my attention from beginning to end. Even though time had gone by, I remembered the excitement, characters and details of the 1st book!
3 stars. I was hoping to like this series, but I guess not. Characters behaved in all sorts of dumb ways seemingly just to build suspense. The angst in both male and female characters was overwhelming. Then there is the apparent pending love triangle...
I loved this book had lots of adventure, danger and love. I cared about these characters and want to read more about them. I will certainly read more books by Teyla Branton.
