Four Blind Mice

Rate this book
Detective Alex Cross is on his way to resign from the Washington, D.C., Police Force when his partner shows up at his door with a case he can't refuse. One of John Sampson's oldest friends, from their days in Vietnam, has been arrested for murder. Worse yet, he is subject to the iron hand of the United States Army. The evidence against him is strong enough to send him to the gas chamber but Sampson is certain his friend has been framed.

Drawing on their years of street training and an almost telepathic mutual trust, Cross and Sampson go deep behind military lines to confront the most terrifying-and deadly-killers they have ever encountered.

On his visits home, Alex must confront another, more harrowing mystery: what's the matter with Nana Mama?

Buzzword A Thon: Four

3.5 Stars

I really enjoy reading James Patterson novels. I know that they are not the best written novels but they're fun. And fun is maybe the most important reason I have for reading. That being said James Patterson novels are often hit or miss for me. I much prefer his older books to the newer ones.

Four Blind Mice is a hit for me. Four Blind Mice is apart of the Alex Cross series. Alex Cross is a D.C. detective and all around bad ass. He and his best friend fellow detective John Sampson set out to find out who framed John's friend for triple murder. What they uncover is a twisted and dark tale that leads them to an evil genius and long forgotten war crimes.

The Alex Cross series is probably my favorite of James Patterson's books. I just really enjoy not only the crime fighting but also I love following Alex and John's personal stories. Another plus is James Patterson novel are super quick reads.

If you like less darkness in your crime reads than give James Patterson a try.

The eighth book in the Alex Cross series and one I had not been able to find easily. In the end I got the audio version which was not my best move. I have been reading this series in paper or kindle and have my own idea of how Alex and Sampson sound. Listening to a narrator does not seem right.

Anyway, judging the book as a book and without deducting anything for my personal bias, Four Blind Mice is Patterson's usual exciting, entertaining and very tense story telling. Alex is up against some very nasty and well trained killers and at times it seems impossible that he can win.

Four stars because it was such an entertaining read and in future I will stick to reading this particular series with my eyes and not my ears.

This is now my new favorite Alex Cross novel! I thoroughly enjoyed everything about it. Everything just worked in this one. It was not as predictable as some and there was suspense and romance! I am reading these Alex Cross books in order so we will see if it stays my favorite. I loved the different sides of the military and government we see in this one. It added a lot to the storyline but some of it was really unsettling but you can’t be naïve to think this could not happen in real life, which is why it is unsettling. This was a great installment to the series!

My quick and simple overall: I can see why it was number one on so many lists. Very entertaining book!

Back into Alex Cross's world, I did enjoy this one and I can see why it has a high average rating. However, I have found I don't gel with 'army' plot lines for some reason. I thought the main plot/concept was really well done though. The reveals and underworld behind the murders in this book with both disturbing and unfortunately realistic.

Alex's home life was a little messy in this one it felt like things were happening just for the sake of it, but I do see a little foreshadowing in this book. I do feel like this is a book in the series where if you haven't read at least the two before this one will have less impact.

I liked learning more about Sampson and I feel like his character is finally seeing a little growth instead of just being a big friendly giant who can kick ass when needs be. There were moments of repetition in this one which I didn't feel was need for a fairly short thriller. A lot of horrible subjects were tackled in this book too, so be warned.

The ending I felt was a little rushed and unfinished, I don't think we have seen the last of a certain group of people though - especially going off the next title The Big Bad Wolf. I am looking forward to the next in the series they are always quick enjoyable reads for me.

Reading a James Patterson novel is akin to eating soggy cereal -- eatable but not necessarily the first choice for breakfast. With that being said, I gave this one four stars. Call me a hypocrite, if you like. But the rating is not so much on Patterson's skills as a writer (which he has few, in my opinion); rather the rating deals with his skills as a storyteller (which he excels at).

FOUR BLIND MICE stars Alex Cross, a homicide detective with too much education. (Morgan Freeman played the character in two movies: Kiss the Girls; and, Along Came a Spider...interestingly enough, Freeman also played a big-brained detective in the movie Se7en; Tyler Perry is playing Cross in the upcoming film). Cross is thinking about leaving the game, joining the FBI as a profiler. But strange murders are taking place where the killers are painting their victims red, white, or blue and leaving strange calling cards at the scenes, albeit away from obvious notice.

The killers have a strange connection to Vietnam and some of the atrocities committed there by American forces. I enjoyed this thread of the novel. It was fast-paced, filled with action (sometimes implausible), and kept the pages turning. When the novel slowed, it was during the threads of Nana Mama's, Cross's grandmother, health issues, or when Sampson, Cross's best friend, begins dating the widow of one of the murder victims; or when Cross begins his dating of a San Francisco detective. To be honest, my mind barely registered these parts. The writing was flimsy here, at best. (James this part is for you: STOP WRITING SEX SCENES...I have seen more passion between acorns and soil than what you "showed"!!)

So the problems with the novel are numerous, but, as I said, Patterson can tell a story. His ability to twist and turn a plot is enviable. However, too many twists and turns just make a mockery of the story. FOUR BLIND MICE borders on having too many twists. Not to mention, unlikely escapes abound in this novel. I have a great ability to suspend belief; but there are limits to my abilities. At one point I actually scoffed aloud at the scene in the forest when Cross and Sampson take on three trained Army Rangers who also happen to be trained assassins...read and you'll understand.

Okay, I haven't really said anything positive about this book to warrant my four stars. Here goes. I got caught up in it. I wanted Cross to so desperately catch these killers that I lost sleep convincing myself that the next chapter would shed some light on this case. (Unfortunately, most of the chapters I convinced myself to read were one of the threads I found lacking.) And when the hook was out in the open, I darted through the pages, back and forth, looking for the golden thread of plot order, finding only barely noticeable fragments, but loving every darn second of this very weak novel. But, as I said, I was caught up in the story. I cared about Cross and Sampson and about the murder victims, which there are plenty.

Overall, I would say that there is no need to rush out and find this book. I'm pretty sure that won't be a problem anyway since every used bookstore in the country has about five million copies of Patterson's books. But if you find yourself needing a novel that won't take much time or effort, you could do worse than this one.

RECOMMENDED (as a great time killer)

I always love to travel with Alex Cross along his journey, and it was great to have a case with Sampson on hand the whole way. I like what the future holds for Cross, and I think he is better positioned for future serial killer hunting now.

Overall, the actual case was mediocre. There was a lack of military understanding and loose ends that weren't tied.

It just didn't drum up enough excitement, even though it could have.

It's just a 3-star for me, but I will be back for more Cross in the future.

Also, Nanna and the kids can NEVER die, don't ever do that, Patterson!

#8 in the Alex Cross series.

James Patterson is one the best selling thriller writers ever. So why do I always feel let down by his books?

Three ex-Vietnam vets go on a killing spree of major proportions. They are not killing just for the sake of it. There is a purpose behind the killings and that purpose is to implicate innocent men in the killings. But why? This is the problem that faces Alex Cross.

This has all the hallmarks of a great read but in the end it fails to deliver.
Parts of the book are fully engrossing but there are parts that just make me cringe. The romantic interludes are pedestrian at best. And for the most part are extraneous to the plot.
The later part of the book, once the reason behind all the killing is revealed, really picks up and becomes quite page turning.

It’s not James Patterson’s ability to tell a story it’s more his writing style that I have a problem with.

So, it’s not a bad read but it could have been so much better.

If you have enjoyed the other Alex Cross novels you will enjoy this one

As usual, listened to a Patterson murder mystery when driving to Virginia in the middle of the night. I need something that will keep me awake (although I'm glad this one didn't have gunshot sound effects, as that sent my dog into a tizzy last time) but that I don't need to pay close attention to. I mean, no matter what, Alex Cross is going to swear this is his last case (it won't be), he is going to fall madly in love with someone, he is going to wax poetic about how much he loves his children while continuing to neglect them, his grandmother will suffer some life-threatening illness (but of course pull through), and, obviously, he will chase a brilliant and horrible killer and come close to dying himself at least twice. Phew.

Seriously, I KNOW how bad these books are. I know. I know I should stop listening to them. But there is something comforting to me about how predictable and terrible they are.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Patterson’s own works are always easy to read. The formula of short chapters and roller coaster plot builds suspension well. Alex Cross with his picture perfect family with Nana an octogenarian who cooks and cleans for them are of course farfetched but fun.

Alex and his friend John Sampson a fellow homicide detective investigate a murder where a friend of John’s from Vietnam has been framed for. The story follows three insane army rangers killing people and framing innocent soldiers who end up being executed. They also like to hunt and kill innocent people in their free time.

Alex is lead by Foot Soldier who has set up the murders for revenge when American soldiers murdered his innocent family during the Vietnam war. Alex and John eventually catch up with the loony ex soldiers. There is also a fourth mouse who turns out to be in charge of West Point. He gets his just desserts as well. A solid suspense thriller which could do without the romance side of Alex and later John.

So and so. The conflict keeps you alert but the fight scenes are not among the best ones. Too many killings, Alex is more than careless in going alone to confront Hutchinson&co. Secondary characters, like Nana or Billie, arouse sympathy so the mark increases from three to four stars...

Warning: There are some spoilers within this review but I'm just way too lazy to just type out the whole formula thing to hide certain stuff. Read at your own risk and I'm sorry!

While reading Four Blind Mice has Cross dealing against a trio of killers. Oh, and since the Mastermind is in jail Alex is thinking about retiring from the Washington Police Force. Now of course one would realize that Alex isn't going to actually retire retire. Yeah, he might quit the force but I have a feeling that he's going to accept another job offer. I mean, there are a ton of books within this series and if I was reading these books when they were first coming out .. uh.. yeah I probably still wouldn't think that Alex would actually never work ever again.

Now this book does have some good twists and turns. Like how it started off with him not working but then his friend Sampson asks him to help him out with a case. Unfortunately, things don't go their way throughout the entire trip. Then there's trouble at home with Nana and I was going to be so sad if something tragic happened to her but in the end everything was fine.

It also has a really good happy ending for someone but then there's a hint of a love triangle that might happen in the next book. Maybe? Well, I'm not on board with that happening at all because it's getting really annoying with Alex and his "relationships" - I just want to read about his job and him finding the murderers. But if he ever has a love interest that I will ever fall in love with then maybe I can get on board.. but that hasn't happened yet.

I can't wait to read the next book!

Alex Cross - book No. 8: John Sampson, Cross's best friend and also a DC cop, asks Alex for help preventing the death penalty killing of an old Viet Nam friend. As Alex and John investigate they begin to uncover an an insidious conspiracy, and a killing spree, apparently being engineered by a group called the 'Three Blind Mice'. Although this book set off with a lot of promise it sort of loss its grip on me before the end. 5 out of 12.

Could be my favorite Alex Cross novel yet. The book moved along at a good place and was very complicated in terms of the actual murders and who was behind them. Cross is ready to retire, but Sampson recruits him to check out a murder in which his friend, Sergeant Ellis Cooper is accused. The murders are quite brutal and there's a patter going on, but the army appears to be covering something up. Things also start to heat up with Cross and Jamilla Hughes as well.

I definitely thought the book was well done and well paced. I always enjoy seeing the killers and the things that they are doing while Cross is looking for them.

Sometimes you just want a “comfort read”. One that you know will grab your interest right away and keep it. James Patterson’s Alex Cross series is always a good go to for me.
Tender moments with Nana mama & the kids to tense moments when the killer(s) are gaining ground and putting Alex’s life at risk.
You’ll get a little more of Sampson’s story in this one too and that’s a good thing. I love that guy!

Three bad men, perhaps four bad men.

See how they run, see how they run.

They all ran after the innocent with a Ka-bar knife.

Each of them sliced and diced with all their might.

They cut their victims open as if they were a butcher’s delight.

Honestly, did you ever see such a sight?

As three blind mice.

Wow! This was a breathtaking read that left me only wanting more! Hands down 5 stars for this gem!❤️😍💯❤️

A great book that is really as much about the relationship between Alex and his partner/ best friend John as they try to solve the murder of John’s Vietnam army buddy. Start to finish a real page turner

This is Patterson's eighth Alex Cross novel, and I have to admit, I've been a lot more impressed. The guy is prolific and popular, and his other books have been pretty good.

My biggest complaint is that around page 300, I discovered that Cross, the main character, is African American, not white like I'd assumed. And it was a fair assumption: Patterson is on the back cover of the book, and he sure looks like a white guy to me. My problem isn't with the character's race, it's with having to readjust my mental picture of him ¾ of the way through the book. Seems like something an author would want to mention just a little earlier, perhaps.

Cross should have been a familiar character, but I read a LOT of books. Patterson's other Alex Cross novels, in order, are:

Along Came a Spider
Kiss the Girls
Jack & Jill
Cat & Mouse
Pop Goes the Weasel
Roses are Red
Violets are Blue
Four Blind Mice
The Big Bad Wolf
London Bridges (due out in November)

The main plot was sort of cool. It revolves around a team of ex-Vietnam Ranger villains who are hired assassins with a twist-they frame other soldiers for their kills. The wheels of justice move more quickly in the military than the rest of the civilized world, evidently. Several men have already been executed for crimes they didn't commit. Cross and his partner/sidekick John Sampson, are on the case.

Side plots include Cross struggling with a decision centering on accepting an FBI job, worrying about his aging grandmother, and a budding romance with a homicide detective on the other side of the country. Sampson also finds love and the hot dating scenes thrown in about every fourth chapter are painfully icky. It feels like Patterson is trying hard to appeal to female readers-his resource was a stack of Danielle Steele novels and a box of Calgon.

The killers, aka Three Blind Mice, have individual personalities and are almost interesting. They videotape their violent activities and paint the victims red, white and/or blue. This must be Patterson appealing to his male readers with lots of testosterone and psycho-manly man stuff, like raping and killing girls in a brothel.

The Associated Press said Patterson "writes thrillers as if he were building roller coasters." Maybe so, but this was more like a ride on the Wild Mouse. Lots of twists and turns, but no depth. I'd suggest skipping this one.

Many people have never experienced what Alex Cross has, or came close to it. When Alex decides to retire from being a homocide detective, but an interference with a childhood friend of his, John Sampson, comes along with a case Cross knows he can not refuse. Cross agrees to take the case. This will be his last case. He doesn't realize how dangerous and complicated the case turns out to be until he has dug himself in so deep that there is no turning back for him or Sampson.

Sampson explains to Alex that his friend from war is introuble, he is being charged with murder and John is highly convenced that he didn't commit it. He knows that his friend would never be able to commit a murder. They started investigating. Alex knowing many people, he gets help from them by getting him classified information. Once he saw a few little piece of evidence that didn't match up with everything else, he knew that there was something wrong. He noticed that Johns friend must have been set up. He looed further into it and then realized that many other people were in the same situation as Samopsons friend.

Alex and Sampson both go to talk to other people whos family member had been framed. They both found dolls that all looked the same in each persons house although the person who knew the men being framed had no idea where they came from. Getting more and more evidence didn't help much. All of the men who had been framed were sentenced to death or dead, including Sampsons friend. Alex and John still don't know who is commiting the murders and framing these seemingly inoccent men, or why.

Along with this life treatening case, Alex also has personal issue going on. Whch just makes thing more complicated for him. Nana Mama, his grandmother, who has been taking care of him and his kids for a very long time and was more like a mama then a nana to him, was getting to be very old and sick. He wouldn't know what to do with out her, and is afraid he will have to find out. He also started seeing a woman, name Jamila, who he seems to like very much along with his family. The only problem is she lives all the way in California while he lives in D.C. It is very difficult for Alex to balance everything out, especailly since he keeps finding himself in life treatening situations.

Four Blind Mice by James Patterson is a book that will make you beyond angry, but it’s a great story and will keep you hooked until you read the last word. The book was published in 2003 and was Patterson’s 8th book in the Alex Cross series. Patterson is known for his crime fiction, thrillers and mysteries. The author keeps each chapter short and to the point, which makes the story move fast. This makes it a quick and easy read.
This crime fiction novel is about the setup of several men in the US Army by 3 paid killers. The men in the Army are setup to look like murderers and most are killed by the death sentence. The reader knows who really killed the people, but they don’t know why or who is paying them. The story follows Alex Cross and his friend trying to put together the mystery and figure out what the military is hiding.
The characters are quickly yet well developed and the reader is able to feel as if they actually are apart of this crazy mystery. The plot is unique and makes the reader very angry because the real murderers are out there and somehow haven’t been caught and the army is worthless to seeing things do not add up. This story is very different in the way that the reader knows who the real killers are yet the detective has no idea, this makes you want to go into the story and shake the detectives.
I haven’t read any other books by James Patterson but definitely will because of how good this one is. The book gives very graphic details of rapes and murders that will make the reader’s skin crawl. This book is definitely for mature young adults (high school) and adults. Although it’s not challenging to read, the content will make your skin crawl will disgust and horror. Both male and female mystery lovers will enjoy this book!

I don't really hold any expectation of James Patterson novels beyond basic entertainment at the afternoon television sitcom level - it passes the time, but rarely is memorable.

Thankfully this novel wasn't so bland as many of his others; a pretty decent story line, somewhat based in reality (there were some serious massacres in Vietnam which once found out about were covered up and despite ample evidence were never prosecuted) and enough mystery and suspense to keep the pages turning.

Like his over novels however the story isn't particularly deep, the characters are all rather like a thin sheet of paper - present but not much to them. So whilst it's entertaining to a point I wouldn't hold an expectation of being thrilled.

Uncovering evidence of a series of suspicious murder convictions, Alex and Sampson are determined to infiltrate the closed world of the military. But what is the army trying to hide? And do the mysterious symbols daubed on the house of the accused mean that there are more sinister forces at work?

John Sampson and Alex Cross have always been close (since they were 10 years old), when Sampson asks Alex for help investigating a case that led his friend to death row, Alex agrees. The duo are met with resistance as they investigate the military and why they are so quick to condemn one of their own.

We follow the investigation into Sampson's old friend Sergeant Ellis Cooper, accused and convicted of the murder of three woman and now for death row. We know from the first few chapters what happened to the women and the chapters flip between Alex & Sampson and others involved in the case.

Action wise, it is a reveal at the start then following the progress of the investigation. The chapters are short and sweet as is Patterson's trademark, some dislike that but I have always enjoyed that. Means you can dip in and out especially when you are working or have stuff to do so only have snippets of time to read. We get more insight into Alex's character, in the previous book (I think as I don't read them in order), he met Jamilla, we see her character make a reappearance and more of Alex's family life. I do enjoy the Alex Cross books, this one had a wee bit less oomph than the others I have read however I still enjoyed it, 4/5 for me.

After reading two lengthy, complex, and rather difficult novels, I decided to turn to a nice easy read to recharge my engines once again. I’ve read all of the Alex Cross series leading up to this one and enjoyed most of them even if they weren’t exactly well written. But this one fell short and I hope it isn’t a trend in the making.

The best Alex Cross novels are those in which he goes up against a criminal mastermind of one stripe or another. In this one, though, the bad guys (revealed very near the beginning) are really nothing more than thugs. These brutes were trained as elite soldier/assassins for the Vietnam war but are now working for somebody else…the fourth “Blind Mouse”. The plot was heavily encumbered by Cross’s continuing desire to hang it all up and join the FBI as well as romantic interludes that seemed to stretch far beyond any story value. Other family issues and Cross’s heavy-handed introspection made many parts of the novel feel like trying to sprint through molasses.

Still, these books do have a certain page-turning quality and so I suppose I will read more in this series eventually. I would like to see how things pan out when Cross works for the FBI. But I will wait until I need another ‘fast food” convenient read rather than enjoying a “steak and lobster” novel.

This is the 8th book with Alex Cross, but the first I read involving that character. Will have to read the others.
Alex and his good friend John Sampson look into the murder conviction of a man John served with in Vietnam. While looking into the case they find discrepancies and cover-ups in the military records.
Other similar cases are found as they seek the truth behind several military personnel, with previously clean records, being convicted of heinous crimes and sentenced to the death penalty.
Several twists and turns, interesting look into friendship and loyalty, as well as misguided ambitions. Interesting read.

I really liked this book. It's about Alex Cross and his hunt for the Three Blind Mice. This group is made up of three war veterans turned hitmen. Alex Cross is put on the case to stop the rampaging hitmen. This story is full of action and suspense. I loved how James Patterson developed the characters throughout the book and made you really root for Cross and really despise the bad guys, and these bad guys are no joke the worst.Just an overall great book and I'd highly recommend it.

I liked this one a whole lot better than the previous one in the series. This is supposed to be the "last" case Alex is planning on doing, a request from his friend John Sampson to help out an old friend of his. The story is fast paced, straight to the point and of course brutal murders, in true "Patterson style". I also really like the Cross´s family part that´s included throughout the series.

Σε προσωπικό επίπεδο, η γιαγιά του Άλεξ Κρος, η δυναμική ογδοντάχρονη Νάνα Μάμα αρχίζει να δείχνει σημάδια κούρασης και υφίσταται μια σειρά ιατρικών εξετάσεων ρουτίνας για το καλό της, ο Τζον Σάμπσον γνωρίζει και παντρεύεται την Μπίλι Χιούστον, χήρα ενός θύματος της πλεκτάνης των «Τριών Τυφλών Ποντικών» ενώ ο Άλεξ Κρος, εντελώς απογοητευμένος από το μακελειό και τα απάνθρωπα μυαλά που έχει συναντήσει ως τώρα, παρ’ όλο που θέλει να παραιτηθεί από την αστυνομία, αρχίζει να σκέφτεται την πρόταση του διευθυντή του FBI, Ρον Μπερνς, να γίνει πράκτοράς τους και ταυτόχρονα περνάει ουσιαστικό χρόνο με την πράκτορα από το Σαν Φρανσίσκο Τζαμίλα Χιουζ που γνωρίσαμε στο προηγούμενο βιβλίο. Θα καταφέρει να ορθοποδήσει αυτός ο έρωτας, άραγε; Τι αισθήματα έχουν δημιουργηθεί στον Άλεξ Κρος και πώς θα καταφέρει να χειριστεί την πολύπλοκη και επικίνδυνη ζωή του;
