The School of His Presence

Rate this book
It is impossible to separate our knowing of God and our experience of God. Our knowledge of God is an exact proportion to our experience of Him. Authentic Christianity is a life lived in and through the sweet empowering presence of Jesus. The Holy Spirit as the presence of God in the world has been given to us to make the living Christ experientially knowable. We only know God to the degree that we experience the living person of Jesus. Without experiencing Him Who alone is Life we cannot simply live. It is by the continuous experience of Him that we continue to live and develop into His same image. His presence is not a gift for the holy but a gift to make us holy. Come to Jesus. He will take you, hold you and kill your fears, doubts and rebellious nature with the closeness of His embrace.

RATING - 10/10

🔵 I loved the fact that Eric Gilmour emphasised how to experience the presence of God. In his book, he explains that the experience of His presence is the experience of His person. Eric Gilmour highlights how our knowledge of God is in exact proportion to our experience of him.

I loved that the book also made me feel like the presence of God is not for a select elite group of people but it is accessible to anybody.

A sentence that stood out to me in the book -

“His presence is not a gift for the holy but a gift to make us holy.”

🟡 Although Eric Gilmour simplified concepts, the book felt too short. Some of the ideas he shared were so good it would have been nice if he went deeper.

This small book has a distinct revivalist feel to it that I find attractive. I love the raw hunger that Gilmour keeps calling the readers towards. There is a need to routinely revisit our simple pursuit of God's presence as the foundational piece for all we do in life.

Far from exhaustive, this work does serve the purpose of stoking the flame as you ask yourself repeatedly if you are solely focused on Jesus and following in His wake.

Did not like the overall individualist tone and rhetoric of this book. Author does not seem to understand different walks of life and how they work. One does not need to be ALONE to find God... Too often people are simply not physically able to be in a position to be in solitude. Plus, the spirit of God is within men, not one man, not a group of men, but all men. I think this book will only apply to certain individuals. Not as in depth and philosophical as the books I usually like to read.

In the secret of His presence, how my soul delights to hide! O, how precious are the lessons which I learn at Jesus’ side! Earthly cares could never vex me, neither trials lay me low
I just want the above verses to become a reality in my life .
This book gave another level of hunger to pursue Jesus

The Presence of Jesus is revealed in Gilmour's writing.

Read it, not merely to get through it, but so the words can get through you. I've taken notice that Eric has been with Jesus.

Short and sweet

Just a few pages that teases the reader to draw closer to God. The one who is jealous for us only wants to be with us. He is that star struck with us. Incredible privilege it is.
