This was a pretty solid start to the series…
The text placement in this is horrid though haha. I felt so confused sometimes. I liked it enough to slowly read it from the library. The ending made me feel like we could have a potential love triangle and that could be a hit or a miss.

Another series starter. I’m also intrigued by the premise, though it took me a little while to get really on board with the actual story. Still mildly curious so I’ll check out the second one.

I've wanted to read it for years, but I must have read a review or something a while back that had me refrain from picking this up.
A mistake that I won't do again. ;P
I'm not keen on love triangles, but this is a really compelling story! We know within the first chapter that Nino is going to be pretty divided when it comes to love. Or maybe not given how the volume ends…but either way I really like the characters! This is a love triangle that I'm genuinely curious to see the outcome and find it plausible. That first chapter gripped me followed by the second one and so on…
I wish I could hear the song the mangaka heard/listened to when she wrote this series because you can really see the passion and the heartache when "Alice" sings. Even though I'm not technically hearing anything, well done to the mangaka for still bringing forth all those feelings that music creates!
I REALLY like Yuzu! I'm hesitant to say he is who I'm shipping Nino with, but I really appreciate his internal honesty. He's straight forward, doesn't take smack, and is very caring at the core. I am extremely curious to see where his and Nino's friendship will go.
Overall, this was a great first volume! There was some good humor woven in and a lot of good heartstring pulling moments. I am very eager to start the next volume!

Definitely not for me. The first chapter was painfully cheesy, ridiculous, and I didn't care at all about Momo or Alice. Or Yuzu. Alice just combusts into song to cheer herself up and so did Momo, but as a printed medium, I can't tell if their voices were good. All I saw was cheesy childhood crap I couldn't care about. The rest feels like an edgy high school music fanfic. The only thing Alice cares about is reuniting with Momo. I have no idea how this desire lasted from elementary to high school. Crushes come and go. I won't be continuing.

A bit of a slow start but I quickly became invested as the story progressed. Yuzu is too beautiful - he’s painful to look at! I’m not sure how long the series is but I am suitably intrigued and hope to continue with this title.

This first volume was chaotic and kind of a mess. I have no idea what's happening, but there's a band, secrets, and a lot of unrequited love so I'm invested.

Nino Arisugawa grew up with Momo at her side. They held hands and he came when she called. When he suddenly disappears with his family she is crushed. When she meets Yuzu singing his music soothes her soul. Suddenly he leaves her a goodbye in the sand. Because their connection is through music she sings her heart out everyday so that in the future she can find them again.
This is a review of volumes 1-2 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.
The Premise
Nino is a flighty girl who doesn't really pay attention. Not to worry because her friend Momo is always at her side. Until one day he isn't. GAHHHH I was totally ripped for Nino. I had to read this section a second time but when I did it totally captured my heart. I can see why Nino felt invincible at Momo's side... because it was clear he felt invincible at her side too. This kind of childhood friend... losing them suddenly... yeah it brought on panic attacks. Should a girl feel panicked because the stable person in their life is gone?
Probably not, but its hard not to relate.
She clings desperately to what he told her... one day they would meet again through the beacon that is her singing. In the midst of despair she meet another boy, Yuzu, a burgeoning music composer. He develops a crush and she can breathe again. Until he does a vanishing act too! For all of this back story that is built up in Anonymous Noise vol 1-2 we quickly move on to the present where our protagonists meet again!! Yes, and its dramatic, full of angst and topped up with the full range of high school emotions.
The Buzz
I really loved that Yuzu had used his feelings for Nino, the Nino he knew was desperate for her missing neighbor boy to form a band! Yes, the young composer plowed all his love into songs for In No Hurry To Shout. I love the turn that the story took when the band was introduced. This is ultimately about unrequited love (isn't that what high school is really about?!) and I really felt for Yuzu and the situation with his band failing.
Then we have Momo! What a rotten situation to be in... He was quite blessed to turn his composing into a lucrative career for his family. This is all very angst filled but I am intrigued with how their relationships as teens are developing. They aren't going quite where you expect but at the same time its in line with what we've learned about them through Anonymous Noise vol 1-2.
The Feels
Yuzu and Nino are in a bit of an emotional dilemma in Anonymous Noise vol 1-2... Their feelings are unrequited. They have opportunities but it will put them in situations that will be emotionally draining but also potentially soothing too. I really felt for both Yuzu and Momo. They seem to have a very, very slow burn bromance going on that is quite exciting to me.
I typically feel really strongly about the protagonists in any manga I read. And I do really like Yuzu and Momo. I do feel for Nino. The plot was hard to follow at times. I wasn't sure what was happening or what was concluded. I want to bond more with Nino and feel more what she is feeling in the present circumstances. It's there but I felt at a distance from it.
The Visuals
TBH the art was hard to follow in Anonymous Noise vol 1-2. It is what caused me to struggle with a manga that really has great relationships and tons of drama. Look at the covers... GORGEOUS! This is one of those times when I feel like COLOR would have clarified a lot. This may be a time when I have to re-read volumes (that really helped me click with the back history in vol 1) or even go for the anime.
I'm planning on struggling forward. I really love the unusual direction the relationships are taking and the character designs are gorgeous! I just want to be able to understand more. To connect deeper. If I can get into the story's rhythm better I hope to achieve that with vol 3-4.
Anonymous Noise vol 1-2 is all about unrequited love. Why are these relationships not taken to the next level?! For many reasons that differ for each person. As we follow Nino and her friendship with Yuzu and her reuniting with Momo we'll get to feel all the drama, angst and emotions of high school once again.

The storyline is quite confusing in the beginning but starts to formulate later on in the story. All of Nino's interactions with Momo are such a thriller. I love Nino's air-headiness, her character design is super good. Plus watching Yuzu is usually hilarious. I can't wait for Fukuyama to come out with more Volumes!

Nino Arisugawa has always loved singing, but she’s been betrayed by it twice.
First was when her best friend and singing partner Momo moved away with no warning, and then a second time when her friend and songwriter Yuzu equally suddenly stopped hanging out with her.
Now in high school, Arisugawa wears a face mask at all times to keep herself from screaming out but when Yuzu suddenly reappears at her high school and circumstances force the two of them into performing together, it seems like her voice is one more people want to hear.
This is a bit of a chaotic first volume; setting up a love triangle by having Arisugawa repeat nearly the exact same circumstances with Yuzu as Momo feels like a lukewarm set-up and it also makes conveying the basic premise much more confusing. As the volume progresses it turns out that both boys also apparently have connections to the music industry and they both want to use Arisugawa’s voice as well. Slow down Ryoko Fukuyama, you gotta make the guys in a love triangle at least a little different after all!
This first volume has quite a few rough patches even outside of the love triangle. For instance, Arisugawa’s face mask-wearing convention feels very soap opera-esque even for a shojo manga (The story shows that her parents are going through a rough patch but geeze, could one of you take this poor girl to a psychiatrist just to make sure everything is alright?).
The background characters blur together and the art is also very busy. That may be intentional however — the crowded, almost claustrophobic art fits the musical scenes where Arisugawa pours out her emotions very nicely but for the rest of the story it feels like a bit of a mismatch.
After reading this volume I’m very curious what kind of music the anime will be using, with the way the manga conveys Arisugawa’s singing not as a series of lyrics but as a mess of notes. I imagined a rather raw sound like death metal, or even a really intense j-rock sound. Peppy J-pop will not cut it for this series and in my opinion any music without really strong vocals wouldn’t be enough to reflect the wild and unconstrained feeling Arisugawa unleashes while singing.
Despite the uneven edges to Volume 1 of Anonymous Noise, there’s enough intrigue for me to read the second volume and I’m curious as to how the anime translates all of these musical scenes. The love triangle fills me with no confidence however, much like the rest of the story and its art seems overly complicated and not nearly as interesting as the manga-ka believes it is. But if the story continues to focus on the ways that music has given Arisugawa both comfort and rejection then this could be a great manga.

Der erste Teil der Geschichte beginnt als Nino noch ein kleines Mädchen ist. Damals verliert sie ihren Sandkastenfreund Momo, dessen Familie fort muss und kurz daraufhin ihren neuen Freund Yuzu. Beide waren von ihrem Gesang fasziniert und versprachen sie wieder zu finden.
Die zweite Hälfte startet nach dem Timeskip. Nino ist bereits ein Teenager und es ist der erste Tag auf einer neuen Schule.
Es geht viel um Musik, insbesondere um die einzigartige Stimme von Nino. Es wird auch beschrieben als etwas, dass aus ihr ausbrechen muss - egal, wie peinlich es sein könnte. In ihren Augen ist ihre Stimme ein Weg um die beiden Jungs von damals wieder zu finden.
Viele Fragen rund um die Charaktere und ihre Hintergründen werden im ersten Teil aufgeworfen und als Leser ist man einfach nur neugierig inwieweit es alles zusammenhängt. Man merkt, dass die Atmosphäre gedrückt und energisch ist und daher denke ich, dass es eine intensive Geschichte wird um die drei Personen.
Der Zeichenstil ist niedlich, aber auch etwas chaotisch. Manche Seiten fand ich auf den ersten Blick nicht so einfach zu durchblicken. Auch fehlten mir hier die ganzen Liedtexte, wie z.B. bei Nana (wenn es jemanden was sagt). Ich wollte genau wissen was sie singen und wie es klingen könnte.
Es ist in keine Story, wo es um einen Schwarm geht, ein schüchternes Mädchen oder dergleichen. Es geht um eine tiefe Freundschaft, die durch Musik und Gesang geknüpft wurde. Höchstwahrscheinlich wird es zu einem Liebesdreieck gehen, es ist ein Shojo Manga, aber ich finde es schön, dass noch andere Aspekte drinnen sind und er sich dadurch abhebt.

Its like an idol anime but slice of life - which are two great tastes that taste great together! So far, Momo wins "best pony" as he is a pun-ster.

“Memang karena itulah aku bernyanyi. Sebab, aku dan Momo hanya terhubung lewat nyanyian.”
Nino dan Momo, dua sahabat kecil yang selalu menghabiskan waktu bersama. Disaat orangtua Nino bertengkar atau disaat Nino tidak bisa tidur, Momo selalu berada disampingnya, bernyanyi bersama. Bagi Nino, Momo adalah satu-satunya sahabat yang tak tergantikan. Karena itu, ketika mendengar berita kepindahan Momo yang sangat mendadak, Nino sangat terguncang.
“Suaramu tidak akan luput dari pendengaranku.”
Lalu suatu hari, Nino bertemu dengan Yuzu, anak laki-laki berbulu mata lentik. Berkat pertemuan dengan Yuzu dan lagu-lagu buatannya, Nino kembali bersemangat. Tapi kemudian Yuzu tiba-tiba menghilang.. meninggalkan sebuah melodi dan janji sederhana, tapi membuat Nino untuk terus percaya bahwa mereka akan bertemu kembali.
“Setiap pagi, aku menyanyikan lagu Yuzu, lalu menoleh ke belakang… Untuk mencari Momo dan Yuzu.”
Tidak ada yang spesial dari jilid pertama komik ini; tema cerita dan gambar standar shojo manga, belum ada karakter yang menonjol, humor yang garing, dan alur yang cukup mudah ditebak. Jujur saja awalnya saya merasa bosan membacanya. Tapi yang membuat saya tetap membacanya adalah rahasia-rahasia yang disimpan serta pergulatan batin tiap karakternya. Rasanya cerita komik ini akan lebih gelap dari komik shojo pada umumnya.
Tambahan:
1. Setelah baca ulang, entah kenapa merasa kesal dengan tokoh-tokohnya, terutama si Nino (╯°益°)╯彡┻━┻
2. Momo yang sudah beranjak remaja terlihat cuakeeppp (≧◡≦)♡ apalagi radarku menunjukkan Momo sepertinya punya potensi untuk memenuhi standarku (//ω//)

Had promise, but failed with its execution.
If you are potentially interested in this manga, please don’t read the summary. That has the worst spoilers for not only this book but I suspect the next too.
As a musician, I was intrigued at the whole ideas surrounding the main character who was a singer. But after reading this, I can just say that it was poorly done. I do not like the main character and her choices made were strange. She generally was immature and irresponsible, but she was created in such a way that you could tell the author wasn’t around teenagers often.
What added to the overall mess was the art style. The art is done in such a way that one of the male leads looks really strange from profile angle. It is not my favorite style for many reasons, one big one being the way the author dealt with the ridiculously huge eye size.
The story was so bad. I don’t get why the main character likes singing especially after what happened. Generally the story was just poorly done. The characters are the driving force - which is fine if they are interesting and likable. (They weren’t.)
Don’t get me started on the musical aspect. It was horrid. Please, if you are writing about a topic you don’t know much about, research it a ton!

Hmmm.... I watched the first 2 episodes of the anime before reading this and if I'm being completely honest, it seems to me like the anime was able to pace the story better than the manga. For some reason, the pacing of this manga is throwing me off a bit. Irregardless, most people seem to say that it does get better as the story progresses so I'm planning on still giving the other volumes a try first before completely deciding if I will drop this or not.

A little slow in the beginning but once they're all together in school it definitely hits an interesting point. So many unrequited connections!! I'm really curious about what's up with Momo; super cute how he still tells terrible puns. Definitely wanting to know about about Yuzu's backstory as well. Lots of promise in this story!

Der Zeichenstil ist niedlich, aber auch etwas chaotisch. Manche Seiten fand ich auf den ersten Blick nicht so einfach zu durchblicken. Auch fehlten mir hier die ganzen Liedtexte, wie z.B. bei Nana (wenn es jemanden was sagt). Ich wollte genau wissen was sie singen und wie es klingen könnte.
Es ist in keine Story, wo es um einen Schwarm geht, ein schüchternes Mädchen oder dergleichen. Es geht um eine tiefe Freundschaft, die durch Musik und Gesang geknüpft wurde. Höchstwahrscheinlich wird es zu einem Liebesdreieck gehen, es ist ein Shojo Manga, aber ich finde es schön, dass noch andere Aspekte drinnen sind und er sich dadurch abhebt.
Der erste Band ist nicht nur süß, sondern auch herzzerreißend und man sieht schon die Katastrophe auf einen zukommen. Kennt ihr das? Ihr wisst, es wird was Schlimmes passieren und deswegen müsst ihr weiter lesen? So ist das mit dem ersten Teil von Anonymous Noise.
Die zweite Hälfte startet nach dem Timeskip. Nino ist bereits ein Teenager und es ist der erste Tag auf einer neuen Schule.
Es geht viel um Musik, insbesondere um die einzigartige Stimme von Nino. Es wird auch beschrieben als etwas, dass aus ihr ausbrechen muss - egal, wie peinlich es sein könnte. In ihren Augen ist ihre Stimme ein Weg um die beiden Jungs von damals wieder zu finden.
Viele Fragen rund um die Charaktere und ihre Hintergründen werden im ersten Teil aufgeworfen und als Leser ist man einfach nur neugierig inwieweit es alles zusammenhängt. This love triangle is not flat
Just as a warning there is some instance of crossdressing in this series which doesn't surprise me considering real life Japanese Visual Kei group Versailles (as well as others I am sure) were not afraid to dress their boys up as pretty girls. So if that is a major concern for you then you might want to avoid this series.
For a unrequited love story this is a weird start though it does make sense it would all start with Nino and Momo as children leading to life long interest in music. You see whenever Nino is upset like when her parents fight her go to is singing and no one was a better second then her next door neighbor Momo so when he ends up leaving her life it basically changes her world. A little while later she meets boy named Yuzu who calls her Alice knowing their was something special about her singing.
The thing I find strange though since I can't actually hear main girl Nino's voice is how it seems to be drawing so much attention. Especially considering she will randomly burst out into song when inspired (partially once again due to stresses liek in youth.) From what I can tell the unrequited love is relating to poor Yuzu who is willing to do whatever his Alice requires even if it means he will never have her as opposed to Momo whom it seems might still care for Nino too though who knows if he is ever able to fulfil on his feelings in the end. I guess if I want to see how far this love triangle bends I will have to invest more into the series but as always I have a lot of series to catch up on so the chances of that may never come to pass. Maybe some of you will fill me in instead. :)

I love the musical elements of this, but I'm not quite hooked due to a couple of things:
1. The story looks like it's going to revolve around a love triangle, which can sometimes be good, but is more often simply annoying.
2. There's a weird crossdressing thing with one of the characters?
I'm still going to give the next volume a try! Hopefully, neither of those things turns out to be a big issue, because as a musician myself, I really enjoy stories that are focused on music!

This was an emotional start to the series and establishes the main characters pretty well. I'm wondering how they are going to deal with all the drama I see coming up. I also like that Nino, while she is a tad overdramatic at times, us mostly level headed.

I started this series to be able to give my teens some musical manga recs for the summer reading program. I think I'm more shocked than everyone that I want to continue this series. This is the first manga I've ever finished and I'm excited to see where this one goes!

I think this particular manga has been on my to-read list for at least half a year. Somehow, I always found other things to read or just plainly ignored it. And now for some reason, it is the very first one to be reviews on my blog. Fate? I don’t know about that. But as soon as I took up this manga the first 22 chapters went so fast I couldn’t believe myself, and then I was waiting for about 2 weeks for the next chapter to be translated. Now I have to wait for even more…
First let’s talk a bit about the plot. I think the summary doesn’t give us a lot, but at the same time it intrigues enough to start reading. Let’s say we have three main characters: Nino, Momo and Yuzu (Nino is a girl and Momo and Yuzu are guys). Nino and Momo are childhood friends, who are very, very fond of each other. They are always together doing stuff and especially sing different songs. Because of some circumstances Momo’s family has to move away and those two promise each other that their singing will be the sign to bring them together in the future.
Now, you’ll think total childhood friendship cliché. Well, sorry, to disappoint you. Because those two were inseparable, when Nino is left alone, she is suffering a lot. Because of loneliness she wants to scream and in order to stop her soul to scream out loud she starts to wear a mask over her mouth. Everything would have been amazing, or kind of, if she didn’t meet a boy called Yuzu one day when she had he breakdown. And so he asks her to sing his songs when she is having her breakdowns. Long story short, something again happens and Nino is left alone again, but now, she is singing when she wants to scream. Several years pass and now all of our main characters are high school students, but are they the same? Could it be that Nino can be reunited with Momo? Or something absolutely different is awaiting her? That’s for you to find out if you start reading this manga.
Now, a bit about the style of the manga and why I chose this particular one for today. I have read another work by Ryouko Fukuyama, Monochrome Kids, though it is still being translated in English and I am thinking of reading it in German. I can say with utmost certainty that if somebody would have told me a year ago that I will be reading and understanding manga, I would have laughed. To say the truth I’ve tried one about 5 years ago. For me it was just some pictures and words, I was always confused from where to start reading. I just wasn’t having fun. I don’t know what, but somehow around a year ago everything changed. I got a taste of ut and I liked it. But even now sometimes I’m lost when I am reading manga about music or arts. The author has to express his ideas and emotion through black & white world of drawings and words.
When I was reading Unmasked Noise, I felt all the characters to the extent that I thought they were real, that they lived around me. I got why they are so stupid, but the best part was that I was really feeling the music through the pictures and it was amazing. I think it was as if I was listening to the screams and songs while reading. I only had the same experience with Chiba Kozue’s Crayon Days, where through black & white I actually was seeing all 24 colors of palette. I guess, the next time I will write about that one.
When I was reading Unmasked Noise, I was on edge every time. I was intrigued by everyone’s past and was cheering them on their future. The characters are portrayed as real people, they are not the best people in the world, nor are they the worst. They are just people; they are high school students, who have their own dreams, fears, expectations and obligations. They are in love, but they all have to forget that feeling for the time being, first is to show each other that they are there, that their voices can reach their loved one hearts.
I really hope that this review was at least a bit helpful, I tried not to spoil (which was quite hard, because I want to say so much more). I guess I will just write another review when all the chapters are translated and I finish reading them. Christmas is just in a few days. Have great holidays and have fun!
