Text-to-Self Connection

This week I chose this cute book that explains to young ones who to call in an emergency. With this book I was able to make a huge connection because it reminded me of where I started when I joined Public Safety/Law Enforcement. I started out as 911 dispatcher. It was a close to home book for me. This is a good book for young ones to read and start them out by knowing what an emergency is. It is also knowing who we call when an emergency arises. I have had real emergencies and false alarms with young kids calling into 911, it is truly an experience. Hearing a young one on the other line with an actual emergency was always very sensitive and touching. This career will always be a part of me and will go with me everywhere I go.

Text-to-Teaching Connection: What is a response activity that you can do in a classroom with children in response to the book?

"It's Time to Call 911". Very important to role play emergencies and emergency drills. We do not know when an emergency may happen. However children need to understand what is an emergency and is not considered an emergency. Then too understand to call 9-1-1 and not 9-11. There are many many kinds of phones and sometimes parents may even put a codes on their cell phones. Some phones are designed to call by pushing the word "Emergency", and our children need to know. Therefore it is wise to practice from time to time and ask parents to reinforce good emergency practices at home too. I would have prepared emergencies and non-emergency role plays the students would carry out and we would talk about when to call 9-1-1 and allow each child to use different types of pretend phones, to dial 911. It is important to know what each child knows and understands regarding emergency situations and what to expect once they place the call. We would talk about the different sounds we would hear, who we may come in contact with. What kinds of uniforms responders may wear and what information we would have to give the First Responder (over the phone and in person). To make sure the students understand I would have them to draw me a picture of an emergency and a picture of a non emergency. Then extend the learning to the home environment to include the family.

This is a fun little book that teaches an important skill. We first purchased this for my daughter. She loved it! I would read the questions in a silly voice. Then she would dial 9-1-1. She had the skill down at an early age. We read this book a gazillion times.

We have continued the fun with my son. He too loves pushing the button. I am convinced that if ever there was a problem, both of the children are able to call for help. Woo hoo!

Several years later and a couple thoughts . . .
The battery no longer works, so dialing 9-1-1 is not nearly as fun as it once was. :(

Children grow up and don't always act out the lessons taught. The police are understanding when children dial 9-1-1 to complain that their parents didn't supply what was wanted. Oh, my!

The book teaches a child how to and when to call 911 and also how to call 911. There is a fake phone connected to the book that makes siren sounds when you correctly dial 911. The book makes it clear that you only dial 911 when there is an emergency.

This book is a great read-aloud that provides lots of situations for kids to answer and decipher when to call "911." It also has fun buttons for kids to practicing pushing the buttons of 911.
