I didn't like this. :(

A warning for people who hate reading about animal cruelty, there were two instances that I found very hard to read about.

I have a feeling John Inman and I are not a good match. I just don't feel any connection with his characters.

This should have been a big winner for me. The young beautiful guy, suffering in an abusive relationship, while getting comfort from the sweet bartender in the bar he frequents.

I did like Danny, and his relationship with the abusive Joshua was pretty realistic to read about. But I wanted more comfort from Jay, the bartender.

After Danny leaves Joshua the comfort period gets almost skipped and a month later Danny and Jay are in a relationship. All of this happens in 1 page. I didn't feel it at all. I even started skimming the sex scenes by that point.

And I would have thought Danny had some hangups about sex, since it was so volitile with Joshua, but nope... all smooth sailing there.

I did fall in love with one character, Ernie. He was absolutely AWESOME! But....

Not my kind of book.

You know what would be super cool and make me super happy? If there was a channel that actually made movies I wanted to watch. It would have to be cable because there would definitely be tingly bits on screen and I’m hoping the language would be of a questionable nature. Every once in a while I’m reminded why I really want this to be a thing and it usually happens after reading a book like My Dragon, My Knight. This book would make a perfect addition to the scheduling on my fantasy network. I’d curl up on my couch in my onesie with an adult beverage in one hand and a bowl of something I shouldn’t be shoveling in my face in the other and I’d binge watch the hell out of this flick.

My Dragon, My Knight has all manner of elements that I love in a story. There were really likable characters, one that I could loathe unconditionally, second chance love and pets. I love when an author can work pets into the family organically and John Inman is a master of it.

Danny is in an abusive relationship with the loathsome Josh and all the scenes with Danny and Josh together were pretty stressful. I could feel how torn Danny was, it wasn’t like Josh changed from the loving, caretaking boyfriend at the beginning of their relationship to the tyrannical control freak he became overnight. I felt Danny’s hopelessness and fear grow as the story progressed. Danny’s one safe space is the bar down the street from the condo he and Josh live in. The bar in owned and tended by Jay Holtsclaw, he’s a bit older than Danny but something about Danny brings out the protective side of Jay.

Jay has heartbreak in his background and my heart hurt as his history was revealed. The two didn’t open up to one another right away, but they did build a tentative friendship and looked forward to the bit of time they did get to spend together.

As one would expect, shit got seriously real for Danny with Joshua and he had to make a break for it to save himself and his beloved pooch when Joshua went on a rampage of a proportion that even Danny hadn’t seen to that point. Danny goes to the only person he believes he can count on, Jay. Initially Danny only wants Jay to dogsit, Danny has no way to support himself on his own suddenly and has only the clothes on his back. Jay is having none of that nonsense and the two become roomies at Jay’s secluded mountain cabin in the hills outside of San Diego.

I’m a native San Diegan so I knew exactly where Jay’s cabin was and there couldn’t have been a better haven for these two to get to know one another, blend their furry families and heal. The environment became another character in the story for me. Jay and Danny’s time on the mountain is a story in itself and I ate up their moments together. This is way more than just one man making an escape and starting a new life. All the characters introduced had depth to them that made them integral to the plot and development of the story. Jay wasn’t just a savior to Danny at the right time, I had no doubt he truly cared for Danny and vice versa. The respect Danny showed for Jay’s past was very touching and spoke volumes about Danny’s character.

Of course, Josh couldn’t just take a big fucking hint and leave things be, crazy people don’t do that and just as things were getting cozy and happy, shit got real yet again. The pace all worked out for the best though, I mean, the second coming of Josh was inevitable but before then there was plenty of the author’s brand of romance and “bonding” that I absolutely love. The characters actually talk about their feelings and fears and it always makes me believe in the HEA between the MC’s.
When Josh does show up, it’s in a truly epic way that makes for great drama in the book and in my fantasy movie. It’s at about this time I really need to make sure my beverage is topped off. The ending is dramatic, emotional and over the top. For an ending that is going to make or break some lives, I’m not gonna lie, it was entertaining as hell to read and again, brings me back to the cable movie feeling that I love to indulge in. Josh’s destiny in My Dragon, My Knight is . . . not pretty and not realistic, but at this point I’m over reality, I want Inman’s brand of comeuppance, that’s what will satisfy my comfy couch self who at this point is sporting a good buzz and needs revenge! And, that’s what I got.

My Dragon, My Knight runs the gamut of emotions, but it’s balanced throughout and I really liked how Danny was more than just his relationships. I wouldn’t have enjoyed the whole story nearly as much if he has just that note. While the impact Josh had on him was undeniable, it didn’t define him and I think that’s what made me able to believe in a relationship between he and Jay, I never got the impression that Jay was a convenient hero for Danny. Jay had his own history and it was given the right amount of page time so that Danny could be there for Jay too.

So, get comfy, pour a cocktail and settle in, because My Dragon, My Knight is quite an emotional ride that is worth every comfort calorie you’re going to ingest along the way.

First off, trigger warnings: Domestic Violence, physical, mental, and emotional abuse, and dubious consent.

This book is a lot darker than John Inman's usually sweet, funny, and somewhat fluffy romances. Sure, there's a bit of humor in this one too, and a sweet relationship as well, but there's a lot of darkness too. Quite a bit of suspense inside too, not in the usual whodunit sense, because it's clear from the start who the villain is, but I was on the edge of my seat for the last half of this book, because I knew, I just knew, that... well, you read this for yourself.

Danny Sims, one of the MCs, is in the above mentioned abusive relationship with his older boyfriend Joshua, asshole first class, and doesn't know how to escape the ever-tightening shackles he wears day in and day out. Having fallen into this trap, he now feels dependent on his abuser, without any friends or anyone to help him. My heart broke for him from the first chapter, and I hoped that he would find the courage to run.

Jay Holtsclaw is a bartender/owner of a bar not far from where Danny lives with his abuser, and takes a shining to the young man sitting at his bar with what is going to be quite a bruise on his jaw.

I liked Jay from the start. He was unassuming and kind, while at the same time only offering friendship to Danny, knowing that the younger man was in a relationship.

Danny's little dog is a thorn in the abuser's side, and when he goes after the dog one morning, Danny scoops up his pooch and runs.

Straight to Jay.

And Jay offers the safety of his arms and his home, and Danny learns to breathe again.

What develops next is a wonderful new relationship for these two as they make a home for Danny in Jay's mountain house. Their initial friendship slowly turns into more, and Danny learns that love is patient and kind and supportive and encouraging. Danny learns to trust.

The writing here is emotional and really tugged on my heartstrings. The more I found out about Danny's life with the abuser, the angrier I became, and the more I cried for this sweet young man trapped in such a loveless relationship, controlled by an abusive asshole who didn't know love at all. But I also smiled with Jay and Danny as they forged a new life together, rejoiced at Jay's tenderness and Danny's awe, and even giggled on occasion, though underneath all of those smiles and giggles, I feared. The author really kept me in suspense - again, not so much as to who was the villain, but as to what the hell he would come up with next. There was obviously the calm before the storm, then a few quick showers, and then all hell broke loose.

I cried hot tears for Ernie. Sweet, helpful Ernie who loved Jay so much and who gave it everything he had.

But when the storm finally came, I was also ready for the abuser to meet his well-deserved ending. Thank goodness for George.

Who's George? Well, you read and find out. I'll just say it was very fitting that George would be the one to deal the final blow.

So, yeah - darker than what I'm used to from this author, but oh so well plotted and written and oh so fantastic to read.

Danny and Jay
Jay realize he has to go on with his life, after a year that his partner suddenly died.... he just have to find some happiness...
He is the owner of a very successful gaybar The Clubhouse. And exactly that is the place he meets Danny for the first time.

Danny sitting at the bar having a thick jaw with knuckle bruises in it looking miserable. Jay as friendly as he is ask how he is doing and they have a honest conversation.
Danny telling him he deserved the knock because he was annoying to his boyfriend Joshua.

It did not stop with one blow, many will follow and finally Danny is leaving and flight to Jay.
Jay takes him into his safe house.

After some time pasts Danny can't handle it anymore and have to confess he is in love with Jay
and Jay sweet Jay his eyes damped.... They will never have to sleep alone ever...
Damn...now and then it was so sweet and heartwarming it made me cry.
And there was humor, the witty comments were really funny.

Only there is still the big bitch Joshua and what he has in mind....suspense is killing.
What started with a storm of violence, through a mild breeze of kindness ended like a motherfucker hurricane.

All the description of the environments were just so well done, all the little details told in a very special own way...I could visualize it lively...
The looking back on life was thoughtful and realistic all spread out at the right moments.
It was emotional but not overdone. It was steamy and hot. It was funny in a witty way. It was full of lovely sweet moments but also some ugly and angsty ones and with a burning tale...
Overall a appetizing read written in a appealing way!

The ending was epic it made my cry ugly tears.

Danny and Jay meet when Danny shows up at Jay’s bar, The Clubhouse, with a swollen jaw. The two get to talking and Jay helps Danny tend to his jaw. Danny soon becomes a regular a few times a week, sometimes with his dog Jingles, sometimes with other injuries. Danny tells Jay about his abusive boyfriend, Joshua and the two men bond. Jay urging Danny to leave before it’s too late, Danny waffling between taking blame and agreeing he needs to get out. When Joshua threatens Danny’s beloved Jingles, it’s the last straw and Joshua runs, grudgingly accepting Jay’s help and offer of his spare room. The bond the two already had grows quickly and as the two fall in love, Joshua isn’t far from their minds. They hope it’s over, but we all know it isn’t.

There are some scenes of domestic violence when we are getting Danny’s POV. Joshua is a textbook abuser, striking out and later apologizing, while also making sure Danny knows that it was all his fault that Joshua hit him; controlling Danny’s every move. Danny knows he’s in trouble, but is convinced he needs to ride it out until he can afford to leave. These scenes are not easy to read. Trying to read between the lines in scenes with Joshua’s coworkers, the flashes of something more Danny sees in Joshua’s eyes makes it even worse. Jay’s POV is also included and we experience how he cares about Danny’s well-being from the first time they meet, his fear when Danny doesn’t show up at the bar, and how Danny is affecting him otherwise. Jay’s had a bad year as well and Danny is the first man to make him feel something in a while.

John Inman has a great touch when it comes to suspense/thrillers. From the start of the book, and even once Danny escapes you didn’t know what was coming next. As far as suspense stories go, this one is fairly straightforward: Is the abusive Joshua merely a bully who is content to take out his rage, anger and hate on the closest and easiest target or is there something more underneath it? Will he give up once Danny is gone? Does he have the potential to become a stalker, or worse?

Underneath the calm, beautiful almost dreamlike progression of Jay and Danny’s relationship, I could always feel an undercurrent of tension, waiting for the trouble I knew would come. Will it be a chance run-in or will it be something more sinister? Was he scared off by a show of support for Danny or is he just biding his time? I cringed when Jay underestimates Joshua’s need to possess Danny, even ignores a sign of possible trouble, but as weeks and weeks go by, even Danny is eventually lulled into believing that Joshua just let him go. Not much more I can say, you’ll have to read it yourself.

I’ve probably said it before, but John Inman’s writing puts you right in the setting and the characters’ frame of mind. My Dragon, My Knight is a story with a small cast of characters, mostly just Danny, Jay, Jay’s bouncer Ernie, and Joshua. The intimate setting, as most of it takes place in Jay’s bar or home, really adds to the tension as well.

As far as John Inman’s suspense/thriller stories go this one is not as intense or gruesome as some others, and might be good one to start with. That’s not to say that there aren’t adrenaline-pumping scenes or blood spilled, but there is a good amount of time that is focused on the relationship between Jay and Danny and the two have a lot of fun with each other. The pacing was perfect, with a sense of calm before that final storm and the ending bittersweet as Jay and Danny find their way forward. If you’ve read any of John Inman’s darker books, you know he isn’t afraid to knock off characters on the way to the heroes’ escape.

If you’re a fan of well-written suspense, don’t mind a bit of bloodshed and love a heart stopping, edge of your seat climax where you’re cheering for the villain to get what’s coming, this is one book you’ll want to pick up.

*sigh* This story had potential, and i liked parts of it, which is why I'm giving it 3 stars, but mostly it was just "meh"

I felt like this was pretty predictable. Not to trivialize the fact that Danny was in an abusive relationship, or anyone who has ever been in an abusive relationship. I'm just trying to say from a storytelling standpoint, this book felt like it hit all the plot points of a story with domestic violence in it. Ya know, Danny leaves Josh at some point, Josh threatens that it isn't over, he stalks Danny (and Jay), Jay doesn't take the threat of Josh seriously, enough time goes by that Jay and Danny think it's all over, then BAM shit happens, it escalates, and Josh shows just how much of a crazy motherfucker he is. It felt very...i guess, overused? Like I feel like we could have replaced Danny and Jay with any other character and it still would have been the same story, if that makes sense.

Like, Danny and Jay didn't feel very complex or like very distinctive characters to me. Yes, they hit all the right cues to be cute together, and I still found myself "aww"ing at them at times, and I loved how much happier Danny was with Jay, how free and alive he was. I loved how comfortable they were together, I thought they had cute scenes - I loved the dogs and cats too, it felt like they were characters of their own (poor Jingles ugh, I'm so happy Danny got away from Josh, I am). There was still things I liked about this.

But in the end I still felt "meh" because there was nothing very stand out-ish about Danny and Jay. They weren't that complex, and they didn't feel real enough. It felt like I had read and seen this type of story over and over and over again already, with nothing distinct to separate the story from the other type of stories like it. It also skipped a lot, I felt, through Danny and Jay's scene, and when dealing with a romance, if the story more often then not just tells you what happened or how they feel instead of showing much of the connection and love and romance between the two MC's, if feels rushed and like the story just wants to get to other things. It feel disingenuous, like the author isn't all that into the characters or the story, but still wants you think they are. Ya know, having the characters say how much they love each other, while I'm not really getting the feeling that they do.

At best, from what I saw of Danny/Jay scenes, it seemed like they liked each other. I never felt their love for each other, and it didn't leave me with a ton of feelings toward the book, one way or the other.

Also, where was the follow up to .

Also, I would say that this book has fully written out dubious-consent, at best, scenes between Danny and Josh. Yeah, eventually Danny likes it and gets turned on by it, but he also isn't comfortable with how rough Josh gets, and it even says when Danny comes he doesn't even get actually pleasure from it. More like it's just his body reacting to the feeling, not Danny. That felt pretty damn close to rape. Danny even tells Josh "not right now" and to stop, and Joshua ignores that. Even though Danny was still attracted to Josh at the time and his body liked it (some of it, at least) it still felt like rape. So at best, it was dubious-consent. So I guess, just beware of that if you choose to read the book, because that could possibly be triggering for some as well.

Also Josh kicks Danny's dog, Jingles, pretty hard, and that was hard to read. So just, be careful of that. Not that you can really avoid some troubling scenes with a book that focuses on a domestic abuse situation, but still, just leaving those warnings in my review incase people need to know.

So I guess, this one was likable at times for me, it did keep me engaged, but overall, I didn't feel too much one way or the other about it.

“There is a beautiful saying amongst the Irish peasantry to inspire hope under adverse circumstances – ‘Remember,’ they say, ‘that the darkest hour of all, is the hour before day.’” ~ Samuel Lover, Songs and Ballads

This is a story of hope born out of despair, of strength painfully gained from adversity, and of courage developed because there is no other choice. The characters are very realistic and Danny’s growth, difficult and hard-earned though it may be, is tremendous. Had this been a play, I’d be giving a standing ovation right now.

Danny lives in hell – in an abusive relationship that has cut him off from all his friends, has exposed him to mental and physical pain that is more than anyone should have to bear, and has pretty much made him believe he is worthless. It was hard to read about Danny’s desperate attempts to defend his passivity, the way he excuses and explains his abusive “partner’s” behavior, and the sheer despair and lack of self-confidence that are normal for him.

Interestingly it is not his own well-being that worries him enough to put an end to his misery. It’s when his dog is threatened by his abuser that Danny finally reacts. Luckily Danny has befriended Jay, a bartender who is willing to help. But running to Jay and being able to deal with the aftermath of what he has been through are two different things. Danny’s recovery is slow, painful, and his x does not give up easily. It’s up to Danny to figure out how to stand up to him – and how to decide what he wants his life to be like from now on.

This novel is a beautiful ode to human courage, resilience, and the will to fight for self-determination and a life free of oppression and pain.

‘My Dragon, My Knight’ is a lot darker and more serious than the other romances that I have read by this author. ‘Domestic Violence’ being the main issue here, I liked the flow of the story as the victim finally rids himself from the clutches of abuse and make a life of his own.

Danny Simms is a young man who has very little he calls his own. He has been in a relationship with his abusive boyfriend, Joshua for a year. Joshua provides a roof over his head and food in exchange of a high price of being Joshua’s ‘bitch’, who he can beat on and physically abuse in the disguise of ‘Love’. As a typical victim of abuse, Danny placates his heart by telling himself that he had done something wrong everytime the abuse happens. But he is dying inside one frightened/abused day at a time.

Jay Holtsclaw is the bartender/owner of ‘The Clubhouse’, a gay bar situated very close to Joshua’s condo. The first day Danny comes to his bar, Jay notices the young man with gorgeous but painful blue eyes, sitting dejectedly in his bar nursing a drink and a painfully swollen jaw. Jay strikes a friendship with Danny which develops into more on his side as his concerns for Danny’s safety also increases drastically. Finally after a violent altercation when Danny decides to live his psycho ex behind, Jay is the one he comes to for help, which he gladly gives and more.

Their friendship has already turned to something very deep and meaningful in the days they spent together talking over a drink in the bar but they do not acknowledge each other’s feelings until later. Danny finally finds a man who really loves and treasures him completely and Jay finds a second chance in true love after a heart-breaking tragedy that has rocked his world a year ago.

But their new-founded bliss is destroyed as Danny’s crazy ex makes it his life mission to do the couple harm in every way he could. Jay and Danny have a final but dangerous roadblock on their way to their HEA and they have to stick together and fight it to protect their love and most of all ‘survive’.

The story starts with a lot of despair as Danny is shown caught in the grips of a relationship that is choking the life out of him with no way of escape. His one part of the day where he feels free and alive, is when he spends it with Jay. I liked how the author describes Danny’s inner battles as he tries to justify Joshua’s actions as well as battle with his feelings for the man who was supposed to love him. Danny is literally at Joshua’s mercy and Joshua knows it and exploits it in a horrible manner. Danny is an abuse victim who had no way to escape while also bordering on accepting his fate for the long term. His plight was real and very believable. I sympathized with his situation, cringing every time he suffered a fresh blow and praying for him to break free.

There was a profound depth to both the characters. As Danny is caged in a life he hates and fears, Jay also has a tragic past which still haunts him. I really felt his pain as he tries to move on. I loved Danny and Jay’s time together from the beginning to the end. It was slow-burn but they both knew long before they become lovers, that they love each other. Danny didn’t want to jump into a relationship just after Joshua and Jay didn’t want to be Danny’s rebound which was very understandable and relatable.

The transition from friendship with deep feelings for each other to ultimately lovers happens seamlessly in a very believable and sweet way. I loved the couple’s walks in the mountains and sharing their lives and pasts as they forge a new and lasting bond together. The steamy scenes were intense and a passionate testament to the couple’s overwhelming and wholehearted love for each other.

The climax was dramatic and a little scary but it was perfect in showing Joshua’s crazy. From the blurb I kind of guessed that something like this would happen and it does really give a chilling conclusion to the story.

This is an abuse, healing/comfort romance with very real characters with real-life problems and hurts. The writing as always is impeccable as the author captures each and every emotion be it despair/helplessness or love/hope beautifully. There is one significant secondary character here who though having very less page-time impacts greatly on the story and whom I absolutely loved. The epilogue that wraps up the story gives a very hopeful and loving picture of Danny and Jay as they start their life together anew.

The plot here is very straight forward with no twists or turns. It’s like I knew what’s going to happen and how it’s going to end which reduced my interest a little. I wanted to give this book a higher rating but I felt that the plot could have been more exciting at the second half, so I am going with a rating of 3.75 stars.

Unlike Mr. Inman’s brand of snark and sass which he pours in his stories in buckets, this book has a more serious vibe with loss, suffering and healing as the reigning issues. It was like experiencing a different aspect of the author’s brilliant storytelling which I enjoyed very much.

Running away from your abusive partner and found your sanctuary doesn't make you one hundred percent safe.
ask it to Denny and Joy, his friend, his sanctuary, his lover after they're living together in Jay's house.
No, not like that, they're friends first, the 'relationship' came smoothly by time, not an insta-love kind of love.
They built it one day at the time. Until Denny feel really safe and can trust jay with his heart.
But you know about abusive, jealous ex-lover, right?
They haunted you, and you can't be feeling really safe until 'it's over'.
john Inman didn't write a lovey dovey light reading this time, but some tension afetr tension after tension made, ended with with a bang!
I wish the ending wasn't like that.
Don't worry about the Denny and Jay, but there's something precious in their life was gone after what's Joshua did.
This is a good story though. Not an easy one through the ending, especially the ending. Damn.

First and foremost I can say, without a doubt, that the way in which this novel’s material was handled was with the utmost honesty and sensitivity. Is there both physical and mental abuse in this novel? Yes, there is, and it permeates quite a chunk of the first half of the book, so if you are triggered by reading such material, you may want to rethink diving into this story. However, I can tell you that what author John Inman does in developing his characters and allowing us to glimpse the inner thoughts and emotions of their hearts and minds is truly inspiring. We live inside Danny’s turmoil, his doubts, his fears and his shame. It is true, realistic and painful to read, and yet the end result, his triumph over the abusive relationship that has all the makings of a deadly one, is beautiful to read. The way in which Jay comes back to the land of the living after such personal loss, and finds love once more, is equally as moving. These two characters could not have been more fully realized and believable. On the flip side, and a near perfect foil to our two heroes, Jason could not have been the more perfect embodiment of evil insanity. John Inman carefully crafts a story of survival and love, and infuses it with some hair-raising moments of pure evil that will rock your world and then some.

My Dragon, My Knight takes a young man who is held prisoner by a controlling and abusive partner, and puts a knight in shining armor in his path; in fact, after reading this some may say that there are two such knights–one being Jay, and the other, sweet, sensitive Ernie. As secondary characters go, Mr. Inman hits it on the nail with the gentle giant Ernie, who is Jay’s bouncer at his bar. It is there that Danny goes to escape the hell his private life has become, mostly after each argument with Joshua, his controlling lover. Jay, who is just a year out from burying his own partner, who died suddenly in his very arms, can only watch somewhat helplessly as the battered and bruised Danny comes to seek solace at his bar.

When things come to a head between Danny and Joshua, it is to Jay he runs for help. Initially Danny just wants to save his little dog and asks Jay to take him in, but Jay quickly makes Danny see he must never return to the abusive Joshua, and moves him into his remote cabin in the mountains. What begins as a friendship soon grows into more, and much needed time, space and healing are all there for Danny, who laps them up and absolutely blossoms under Jay’s gentle care. However, Danny has always maintained that Joshua will follow through on his threat to get revenge, and when things begin to get creepy and disturbing at the cabin, Danny is sure that Joshua has returned to exact his pound of flesh.

This novel has so many twists and turns in the last third of the story that I could barely catch my breath. It was a taut, horrifying ride to the end, and I could not believe the depth of evil that lurked inside one of these characters. Once more I was transported right into the action and terror that John Inman liberally dished out in the final moments of this novel, and I was nearly devastated by the loss of one character and weeping tears of joy at the survival of others. This book is not for the faint of heart. The nature of Danny and Joshua’s relationship is such that you experience every moment of humiliation and pain Danny goes through until he manages to escape. At the same time, you can feel the grief Jay struggles with over the loss of his partner as palpably as if you knew the man personally. You grieve in different ways with both Jay and Danny over losses that are totally different and yet are so incredibly real and deep.

My Dragon, My Knight is nigh on brilliant as a psychological thriller, and endlessly sweet and tender as a romance; that it could be both, simultaneously, just speaks to this author’s incredible talent as a storyteller.

Every now and then, a book comes along that has everything I love. Since it’s not an every day thing, I get so excited when I not only get to read it, but when I get to tell other people about how great it was. Such is the case with My Dragon, My Knight.

John Inman is an auto buy for me. He always gives me the perfect amount of romance, sex, action, and humor. In this book, he delivers in spades. Danny is such a sad young man, and my heart went out to him. He’s feeling trapped by Joshua and doesn’t exactly know how to escape. It’s a familiar sentiment. Danny feels obligated to stay, like he owes Joshua something because he’s given him so much (money, a place to live, stability). Of course, all Joshua’s really given him is fear and bruises.

Jay is such an honorable man. He lost his long-time lover to an aneurism and still mourns. He’s torn between grief and feeling more than friendship for Danny, but he’s willing to stay in the background, supporting him, giving him advice, and when he’s needed the most, open his home to the sweet young man and his dog.

Aside from loving Danny and Jay, I liked the hurt/comfort and the slow burn of their love story. It would have been easy to gloss over the damage Joshua had inflicted on Danny and just have Danny and Jay jump into bed. The author takes the high road, though, and makes them take their time. Jay doesn’t want Danny to think he only wants to use him for sex, or that he wants him to sleep with him in exchange for a place to stay. The tenderness between the two of them is breathtaking, and I would have been happy if there had been 1,000 pages of build up because it was perfection.

Not my favorite John Inman but still very sweet. It was hard for me to read about Danny's abuse and how he tried to justify Joshua's behavior. Thankfully, Jay was able to show that not all love should hurt.

I have to say I wasn’t expecting a story like the one I got to read in My Dragon, My Knight. I’m used to laughing with John Inman and his works, while this new release is more serious and angsty, I was waiting for some drama of course, the blurb is pretty clear, but I wasn’t ready for this level of abuse.

I’d like to make a little promise. The book speaks loudly of domestic violence, if you are not comfortable with it, the author has written a lot of great and different stories, just go there and skip this new one. I read My Dragon, My Knight and soon after another story with the same theme, and although I have never been victim of a violence like this, it made me cringe more than once. I soaked up and then I couldn’t take it anymore.

That said, John Inman has confirmed how talented he is, I loved the plot, I loved the characters but what conquered me was the writing. This novel was a pleasure to read, I spent one night on it and I didn’t even realize the time passing. It totally captured me and my heart. The words were never too many and just the right ones. Yes the writing totally satisfied me, actually the whole story filled my craving for a good read. You know when you read a book and you want more? Not always is a positive thing, often it means the author lacked somewhere or you simply wasn’t in the mood. Well, this time my mood and My Dragon, My Knight aligned.

Danny had a special place in my heart. I was happy for him to have found Jay on his path, first a friend to trust, then a place where he and his dog Jingles can take a shelter, finally a special person to love. And then there is Jay. Gentle, caring and ready to wait for Danny to be brave. I loved how, although he had lost his lover just the year before, Jay wan’t closed in his grieving, on the contrary his openness made him more lovable.

Now I would like to explain why I didn’t give My Dragon, My Knight the full five stars, because not sure if I have been clear so far but I really adored this book. One thing I couldn’t overcome and ignore, the death of a second character, not going to tell you who because I don’t want to spoil your reading, but of course someone will die. I could have easily done without that.

My Dragon, My Knight by John Inman is a winner, I surely will reread it in the next future, it has all the little details I like to find in my books, friends to lovers, age-gap, characters with huge baggage on their shoulders, cats! I feel to highly recommend it.

The cover art by Reese Dante is simple, real and fitting. I like the font, the colors, everything.

I found Jay very naive about the situation they were in with Joshua; on the other hand I found Danny unbelievable brave. He understood the danger he was in and took the step to freedom anyway. I really wanted George to do exactly what he did - best part of the book!

What attracted me the most about this book was actually the title. At first I thought it might be a paranormal book about real dragons, but then I thought about more about it and My Dragon, My Knight sounded like a very interesting story about heroics and characters needing saving. When I read the blurb of this book, I knew it would either be a hit or mis with me. I love reading about characters that have been dealing with a hard life because they have been abused by either their family or previous partners and suddenly someone new comes into the picture and their whole live turns around for the best. What usually turns me away from books like this is that I can’t understand why someone would let their situation go on for so long that eventually they become so trapped that it’s too late to do something about it.

My Dragon, My Knight was a near miss for me and the reason for that has more to with the character development than the plot of the story. I felt like the characters were a bit contradicting throughout the story. They were not consistent with what they would do and say which made the story a bit incredible.

The story starts off with Danny at the bar having is first interaction with the bartender, Jay. The next time they meet, they have suddenly become such good friends that Jay feels the need to protect Danny, and this keeps being repeated throughout the first half of the book, making me feel like the author really wanted us to believe they were friends, or that the characters really needed their relationship to be that of friends. Because the focus started with friendship without much build up before they moved in together, I felt like their chemistry was missing. What made me most annoyed sometimes was the fact that since the beginning Jay has been telling Danny that Josh beating him was wrong and it would be dangerous for him to stay with him, but the moment Danny left to stay with Jay, Jay’s thoughts about the situation were so carefree, like Josh’s threats didn’t mean anything, but he knew from what Danny told him that he was a manipulative person. I feel like the person who should’ve been cautious had to be Jay because in these situations, it’s usually the outsider who has a clear mind about it. When Ernie told Jay that Josh has been coming to the bar, Jay just dismissed it. It made no sense to me.

For the complexity of the plot, the story lacked a bit of depth because of the character development, but was able to keep on reading and finish the book, which is why I give it 3 stars. For those thinking about reading this book, there are a few triggers I’d like to warn about: this story contains dub-con and animal cruelty.

Get out your box of tissues because you are definitely going to need them for this read. I mean you will seriously be crying before the end of this book and maybe more then once. TRIGGER WARNINGS: Domestic Abuse, physical and mental abuse, sex used in a controlling manner.

Danny truly broke my heart. He is in a relationship in the beginning of this book with a man named Joshua who was both physically and mentally abusive. Danny did not know how to get out of this relationship because he no longer had any friends. He had no money. He was basically dependent on Joshua and thatbis the way Josh wanted it. The only thing that Danny did have was his dog Jingles, which Josh hated with a passion.

Danny did luck out by accident when he made a new friend in an unlikely place. The bar down the street from where he worked a bartender/owner there name is Jay. Jay took a liking to Danny from the moment he first seen him coming into his bat. But he knew that Danny was in a relationship and did not believe in cheating so he offered the next best thing which was friendship and advice. Jay wanted Danny to ono that if he needed his help then he was there for him.

The time came that Danny had no choice but to take Hay up on his help and it was the best decision he ever made. Jay gave Danny a safe place to land and offered his friendship and home to him so he could get back on his feet when Danny finally got the courage to leave Josh. Over the next few months things progressed from friendship to more between the two of them but even with the happiness they found there was still a dark cloud that was lingering just over head.

Something bad was coming their way and if they are not careful neither of them may not walk away from it.

This was a very good read. It has so many different emotions it brought out in me as I was reading. At times I was upset and hurt for Danny. Other times I was md and wanted to protect Danny. Then I found myself smiling and routing Danny and Jay on in their discovery of their new relationship. Last but not least I cried. I cried many times through this read for many different reasons. This is not a light read. There is some very heavy subject matter in this book but if you can handle that, you will not be disappointed by this book. It was definitely a very emotional book but so very good at the same time.

A stained glass window of a dragon and a knight perfectly illustrates this story. Danny is living with his dragon, aka his abusive boyfriend, when he meets his knight, aka Jay the owner of the local gay bar. Jay offers Danny not only a sympathetic ear but friendship and ice for his injured jaw. Danny drops into the bar in the middle of the day and has other injuries from time to time. Jay is developing feelings for him despite his misgivings about his memories of his late partner. As the abuse continues Jay encourages Danny to leave and offers him a home. Love shouldn't be about ownership or control, it should be about sharing and treasuring the one you love, which is the clear message of this story. Spousal/Partner abuse in same-sex relationships isn't talked about much and most agencies don't deal with men at all. Despite that lack of exposure I truly hope that there will be fewer of these stories in real life in the future. We need to learn what love really looks like.

This starts as an abusive, controlling relationship. Danny is alone in the world with the exception of his beloved little dog, jingles. He's involved with and egotistic controlling man and he's afraid to leave. Joshua denagrates him any time he feels like it, and hits him also. Danny meets Jay who runs a Bar and the rest is history.

A good story.

A very heartfelt, interesting and intense book that has everything. The whole story is so beautiful yet it is so tragic but it's so redemptive but overall you just feel a certainly that the trials are not finished, but the tribulations will be great. The characters Danny and Jay are just beautiful. They worked well together. They transcended together emotionally, and the villain had no chance. I love how there was a lot of intricacy inside this storyline. It was not just basic. It had layers and all the characters that are in the book really work together to make the conclusion of this book dominating for a full novel.

Jay and Danny

This was a really good, suspenseful story. Love should not hurt, and Danny learned this lesson once he left his abusive ex. This story was very emotional.
