A group of religious zealots on the edge of a southern town, a sheriff haunted by the murder of a child, and a woman out to avenge the death of her boyfriend. Welcome to a new tale of witchcraft, death and deception in Chrysalis, South Carolina.
Creepy, with a dark, Lovecraftian sensibility. I dig the dark cult, with its incredibly well thought-out theology and the organization's strong resemblance to real-world cults. The author certainly did her research. I get hints that the characters are incredibly well-developed, though there are so many, and no single character gets enough time to be really engaging as an individual -- the story is more about two groups of paranormal creatures in conflict and revealing their world. Prose is tight and fluid, making for a very quick and effortless read, though it could use a good edit (mostly homophones and eggcorns, making me wonder if it was originally drafted using speech-to-text software). Will be reading more from this author.
I enjoy paranormal stories and I read constantly. I was so happy to find this author telling stories that include characters that are brown like me. With most other stories in this genre all characters are white. This novel was very well written and I couldn't put it down. Thank you Lori Titus!
This was a very good book. The plot and the scenes were engaging, and the characters well developed, but some spots seemed very familiar to me. Then I realize it reminded me of another book I'd read, The End Is Now, by Crystal Connor. (The authors collaborated on that book) Still, all in all it is a good read.
This book shows the secrets inside a cult and the complications of keeping the cult members to obey with a paranormal/horror twist. I love how the author Lori shows the different points of view of each character but they are somehow all related . I also love love how small town politics have a way of catching up with that town. Can't wait for book 2.
