Jack Zombie #1

Dead Haven

Rate this book
There's one thing former zombie novelist Jack Jupiter hates more than bullies, and that's his hometown of Woodhaven, Ohio.

When Jack's mother passes away in a freak car accident involving a half-eaten deer and a pack of cigarettes, he and his fiancé Darlene are forced to go back to Woodhaven for the funeral.

Little does he know it might be their funeral, too.

A few months before Jack and Darlene's arrival, a mysterious flu-like virus swept through the town, infecting nearly every citizen. Now, like ticking time-bombs ready to explode, everyone is dropping dead. But they aren't staying dead. No. They're coming back as flesh-eating zombies.

Not only will Jack Jupiter have to bury his mother, confront bullies ten years after high school, and save Darlene, but he'll have to fight the dead in order to stay alive. And these aren't like the zombies from his books.

Nope. These walking corpses are real.

Dead Haven (Jack Zombie #1) by Flint Maxwell is a story about a zombie novelist facing zombies. I enjoyed it and I am sick of zombie books so if I can read a zombie book and like it, and enjoy it, then it is good. Although the part where the release of the virus was predictable, it still didn't have any effect on the quality of the book. It still was good with lots of action, great dialogue, character development, good action scenes without getting a reader lost, and no need to know everything (the world, other places, etc.). Some books try to answer too much and this isn't necessary for a book and this book just lets it go, thank goodness. Leaves it open for the imagination. I received this book to read and under no obligation to leave a review, it is not an obligation but volunteered. Great book.

For some reason (I didn't like the blurb) I was really reluctant to pick this one up, so my expectations were quite low. As it turns out it was only slightly goofy (mostly in the characters' relationships department) and pretty fast paced with a couple of gut punch scenes (I really do not appreciate what you did to my guy, Kevin, Mr. Maxwell).

Writer of Zombie horror novels gets caught-up in a zombie apocalypse. Book sets-up for a series.

My dead tree copy weighed-in at a modest 300-pages. It had a 2017 US copyright.

Flint Maxwell is an American author of more than twenty (20) horror and science fiction novels in several series and stand alone. This is the first book in his eight (8) book Jack Zombie series. This is the first book I’ve read by the author.

Despite being a dated sub-genre, I’m a sucker for stories of zombie apocalypses. This book had a real good premise: author of zombie novels experiences a real zombie apocalypse. I write this despite an aversion for stories of, Writers writing about writers. It went back into the grave from there. The story was amateurishly written. The prose was trite. It tried to substitute graphic violence for pacing. There were also glaring continuity errors. In general it had that not seriously edited ‘look and feel’ of self-published fiction. However, I think the author’s greatest mistake was he was, Writing a series for the sake of writing a series. The author’s single good idea and ability were too thin for me to see them stretched across multiple books.

I continued reading this book, because I wanted to confirm my thoughts. I did see how similar this book was to the start of Mark Tufo's Zombie Fallout franchise. That was the direction the author was trying to go.

I will not be reading the next book in the series Dead Hope . Life is too short and there is not enough time for me to waste on reading poorly written zombie apocalypse stories.

While not particularly groundbreaking, this is still such an entertaining zombie story. The main character is a horror author who has previously written his own zombie novel so the narrative is sprinkled with so many humorous. meta comments. I listened to this an audiobook, which definitely enhanced the reading experience.

Ten years after graduating high school, Jack Jupiter and his fiance return to his hometown to bury his mother. As the protagonist in this book, he dislikes the town, especially after being the bullies' choice all during school. Since leaving, he has become an established author of books in the zombie genre; most town folks remember him, many are jealous of his fame. It's the Fourth of July weekend and visitors are coming to town from all over the state. Unknown to anyone is that a fire months ago in a well-known nearby research facility released a virus that spread for miles around, the incubation period was now over and today was the day most everyone will turn into zombies or become food for the hordes.

After the funeral, Jack visits the local recreation center to chat with an old high-school friend who is a trainer at the facility. When the zombies start looking for food, Jack and others - who must be immune - lock themselves inside. The downfall of this story is the length of time everyone spends defending the facility - almost the entire story. The story bogs down here and I almost lost interest in continuing. The protagonist also voices his opinions quite often - sometimes he's funny and other times the comments don't make sense. Once the remaining survivors finally leave the recreation center, the story tempo picks up again. Jack's motivation all along is to get back to the motel to rescue his fiance.

Some readers enjoyed this tale according to the many positive reviews. I struggled to finish it and can't believe the author made this story an 8-book series, especially, if each book is like this first one. I'll pass on continuing this series.

Good Zombie Hometown Massacre

This was well-written and the story kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed the snippet of the next book in the series at the end.

This book seemed like a teenage nerd's fantasy world. Don't get me wrong I'm nerdy but this felt like the writer's first book ever written. It was well written but the whole theme.....seriously seemed childish. When you grow up you don't still think about high school bullies or the awful town you came from. Also typically bullies change with age too. After high school it tends to dawn on them they are no longer the kings and queens of the kingdom and learn to start acting more kindly towards others. I am unsure if I will read a second book. I want to know what happens next but I don't know if I can handle much more high school drama as I am an adult.

This is not your average, recycled "no-brainer" zombie story. Early on, you become very invested in the characters and their fate. The plot is smart, full throttle and peppered with just the right amount of twists and turns to keep your interest.

I love zombie movies, but have not found myself very entranced with zombie novels. Somehow, it just didn't seem to "translate" as well on the written page. But, I have to say that this novel was the exception to that. I really enjoyed the journey this story took me on and the vivid pictures the descriptive writing painted for me. It was movie-screen-worthy.

Let me put it simply: porn is to acting as Dead Haven is to literature. It reminds me of the LitRPG craze that was all the craze a little while ago. I hate it when promising concepts are brutalised by lazy writing.
Keep away if you have any standards when it comes to your popcorn reads.

Pretty good start to a series. I'd like to know what started the virus. Jack seems to freeze quite frequently though.

Disappointment

Storyline was choppy. Characters were underdeveloped and most times, indistinguishable from one another. Didn't care about any of the characters.

Dead Haven is another zombie story, but there’s a little more to it than just killing dead guys who won’t stay down. It starts with Jack Jupiter, who hates his home town and growing up there had been the worst time of his life. Unfortunately, his mother dies and he is the only one to arrange her funeral. In actuality, it’s nothing more than a burial. Fortunately, Darlene, the woman he loves more than anything or anyone, is present and helps make the ordeal bearable.

Jack hasn’t heard from his older brother, Norm, in a very long time and he’s fine with that, seeing that Norm had been their mother’s favorite. As the older brother, he had enjoyed being a constant trial for Jack while they were growing up. To make matters worse, he considers it unusually bad luck when Norm calls and says he’ll be at the burial. Jack is not ready to confront his brother and insists he leaves. Norm, after all, is not the one who took care of their mother and it aggravates Jack to no end that Norm will appear and act as the favored son, once again.

After the funeral, Jack figures they’ll have to eat eventually and heads off to the nearest mom and pop grocery story. He prefers to keep a low profile, but sooner or later he will be recognized as the successful zombie author he is. At the store, he is noticed by an old school bully who asks Jack about his success. He decides that belittling his former tormentor is the best way to handle the situation and announces that he’s disgustingly rich, and this once upon a time bully proceeds to beat the stuffing out of him. Jack limps back to the motel where Darlene waits. She tries to soothe his battered ego, but this is the final straw and he elects to work out at the gym owned by an old school friend, even though he despises working out.

This is where the zombies make their debut and where said bully’s father happens to be at the same time. You have probably guessed he is going to cause Jack all sorts of trouble, because he is a gem much like his son. As a group, they decide to sit and wait for rescue. Except Jack is not in agreement. He is terrified for Darlene and wants to get back to her. It’s amazing what a group of petrified people will do. Argue is first and foremost. They also look to Jack, since he’s a well-known author of zombie tales. That belief won’t get them far, as he has never actually encountered one and never expected to. This is an opportunity for Jack to show what he is made of. When pushed to lead, he doesn’t turn away, but attempts to lead a cantankerous, frightened group of people through the zombie apocalypse. Although Jack is a disappointment to himself, he actually comes across as someone who will do what needs to be done. All in all, he is not a letdown for the reader nor the book.

The rating:

Genre and general reading age – Science fiction for teens and adults who enjoy those scamps we lovingly refer to as zombies.
Level of sexuality – There is some sexual activity, but it does not drive the story so much as it defines the relationship between Jack and Darlene.
Is there graphic language? There is some, but not to an extent that it had my attention more than the story.
Did I cry? No.
Did I laugh? I had to smile sometimes just because of Jack’s opinions.
Is this part of a series? It is book one of the Jack Zombie series.
Level of character development – Jack continued to mature as a leader and a man in love with Darlene throughout the entire book.

I will be honest here and say that although I liked this storyline, I read the sequel and found it to be a more interesting book. For book one, I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars. Start here and keep going.

Despite having read an awful lot of horror stuff over the years somehow I have managed to avoid ever reading a zombie book before. To be fair, I'm not really a fan of zombie movies so have pretty much avoided them based on that fact. I was a little tentative going in to this one to be honest but I found myself really enjoying it. Yes, it is as corny as all get out and you pretty much know where things are going and the reason for the zombie apocalypse descending on Small Town America is ridiculously cliched. You know what, that is what every zombie film I've ever had the misfortune to sit through was like so I'm guessing the more literary version should be the same.

Whilst Dead Haven doesn't bring anything new or innovative to the table, it does entertain. There's plenty of shuffling, groaning dead flesh that is managing to wander about (okay, so they only murmured "Brains" in my mind) and do a moderate amount of problem solving to get at the lovely warm human flesh. Nicely gory scenes that manage to walk the tightrope between gross and disturbing adeptly. There is a sort of plot but honestly it doesn't really matter that Jack Jupiter is obsessed about getting back to his fiancee Darlene. It doesn't matter that he is cooped up with the father of his school bully (who clearly taught his son all he knows). It doesn't matter that we get introduced to a fair number of people because most of them are going to die anyway.

This book gave me a great deal of reading pleasure. I could unplug from the world for a bit and just enjoy myself bobbing around on the periphery of a videogame treatment with a few authorly bells and whistles. For all I know this could be a terrible exponent of the genre but that matters less to me than how much fun I had reading it. Would I look out the following 7 books in the series? Probably not to be honest - it was fun but I don't care about the characters or their situation enough to want to see what happens next.

Ok, I let met start out by saying that I just bailed out today on this book - about 3/4 of the way through. The book starts out with a story line straight out of any generic archaic story written between 1950 and 1980: Skinny wimpy guy goes back home to his home town because his mother dies, gets bullied again by his old high school bully and fresh twist - winds up in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Oh yeah, he happens to be a writer of zombie apocalypse fiction. Honestly that is the part that got me to give it a read in the first place.

There are other reviews down below that get into things I had issues with, but I will reiterate what someone said - it reads like something that was self published. The plot doesn't make sense, the characters are bland and superficial, and the most annoying part for me - remember in the walking dead, when it started to get annoying because the characters started making the most irritatingly stupid decisions? This author clearly watched that and liked it.

I almost quit a couple of times, but I finally did when the group of protagonists are held at gunpoint and the protagonists are weaponless, and refuse to relinquish a disabled guy that came to them for help. I'll remind you, they are held at gunpoint, have been disarmed. The bad guys could just literally shoot them and take the guy anyway, but instead a long conversation happens where the bad guy ASKS for them to hand him over, they talk shit to the bad guys - who could just shoot them down, but don't - and stupidness ensues. That's where I gave up.

Jack visits his hometown for his mother's funeral where he meets people from his childhood. From the sheriff to the bully, almost everyone sees him differently as Jack has become a famous author now, who writes zombie stories. But soon fiction becomes reality when a deadly gas that leaked from a chemical plant months ago starts changing people into flesh eating zombies. Jack must find a way back to the motel he is staying in to save his fiancé.

I wanted to read a zombie story for a long time and this is a typical zombie story. A group of survivors trying to fend off zombies and finding a way out. The group of people is also something you'll find in almost every zombie story. A hero, a dame, an asshole and people you know would be killed off later. But again, the setting was different and the narration was peppered with dark humor, even if it was unintentional.

The author swayed between keeping the story dark and funny. It's not that the story was bad or the characters not likeable. I just feel if the author had kept it dark, it would have worked better. There are 6 parts in the series I think, and I'm still confused whether I'll read the rest of the books or not.

This is an entertaining zombie book that has a good bit of humour and irony in it as well as the usual zombie related gore and violence. It opens as with Jack Jupiter returning to his hometown for his mother's funeral where very little has changed, including the behaviour of the school bully who has not managed to get over the idea that violence solves everything. And then, while Jack tries out the local gym, things really hit the fan and the zombie hoards come crashing in. And so begins the usual disbelief, power struggles and general carnage but this time with some entertaining commentary from Jupiter who just so happened to have written a zombie book himself, but wasn't as twisted as the reality as he is now faced with (or so we are told). While this doesn't add anything ground breaking to the zombie genre, I did enjoy the more satirical approach and it does make a good start to the series, although I do hope there will be a bit more character development as things progress (as long as Jupiter doesn't loose his wit anyway). Made for a nice easy read in between snowboarding sessions on holiday.

I'm sorry - I didn't love this as much as I've enjoyed the Whiteout series. This came recommended by the author himself as we swapped some emails. I gushed about The Snow, and loved the follow-ups, and he highly recommended this one, even with me saying I'd been burned out on zombie books.

This one seemed to have too many characters all suddenly thrown at me midway through the book, and I didn't know which I was supposed to care about (hey, it's a zombie book - some of the characters are gonna just be there to get killed right away), and I found I really didn't care for most of them. Also, and again because it was so fast paced, some part just seemed like "wait, what just happened?" Maybe I was zoning out a bit?

I think Snow etc were a nice slow burn, which this one was a bit TOO fast-paced for me. I might yet give the second book a try because, well, you gotta find out more about the origin and what happens to the gang....but it'll be with trepidation.

Sorry Flint...

This was a pretty good zombie book. I love these types of stories and usually they’re not that great. This one was fun and full of action.

Why only 3 stars? Character development. I feel like the story just jumps into the deep end. There isn’t much background and unfortunately it means I didn’t get invested. I understand this is a series but if I’m gonna read a whole series I need to at least like the main character. There was a ton of potential and the action sequences were really good, but there times when it seemed rushed. For example a character death happened, it is a zombie novel, and I had to reread the passage three times to understand what happened because it wasn’t very clear and didn’t make sense.

Still, it was a fun read.

I’m a sucker for zombie apocalypses. I gave this a go and stuck with it. It had its entertaining moments but there were parts of it where you’re kinda scratching your head because the main character shits on a particular genre for bad writing and scantily clad people on front covers. If you’re going to take a swipe at another genre, you better make sure your hands are clean. This is to good zombie novels what those dirty romance-fantasy novels are to good fantasy novels.

And if your character is a writer, he needs to have some original thoughts. Everything is just cliches wrapped in a 15 year olds delusion about life and the apocalypse.

Destruction of a backwoods small town?

Love it! Zombies attacking a zombie author? Even better! This is well written, fast moving, easy to follow and if you ever had to live in a backwards, close minded town of idiots you wanted to run screaming from, you will get it! I love the fantastic irony of the authors journey and the ending of this " episode"....On to book two! Let's see how far the greedy corporate scrum who caused this disaster ( like all the disasters they cause) have run and if they brought death with them as usual.

I wasn't sure about this story in the beginning. I didn't really like the guy but I guess that's because I can't relate I loved my mother and was devistated when she died so I couldn't really imagine not seeing her for 10 years. There was also a part where he talks about the book he wrote that sort of took me out of the story and made me aware I was reading a book and there was a guy in it who wrote a book. Kinda like book inception. I still enjoyed the story and it was fairly realistic no massive feats performed that you knew would work in real life.

3.5 stars. This was alright. A zombie book that tries to take a sort of funny twist similar to The show X Nation although this missed the mark a little for me with that regard. Some of the parts that were meant to be humorous just missed it for me. That being said, I did find this entertaining though I did wish a little mor happened in this book. I’m sure it will pick up more in the second book and I will give that one a try. Overall not a bad book. It took me a while too get into just because I was also listening to a coup of audio books at the same same.
